Captain Marvel has a different view on Manchester United’s midfield

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has insisted that the weakness at the club does not lye in the central midfield position.

The midfield has long been considered to be underwhelming against tough opposition and with Paul Scholes retiring, now seems to be the correct time to seize the opportunity in the transfer market to buy a commanding figure to play in the heart of the midfield.

But Robson, who offered his input to the situation during the Reds partnership announcement with Aeroflot as the the new team carrier, believes that buying one individual should not be the priority.

“I know with the Manchester United fans, they are used to having a really dominant central midfield player. Like Keaney, Incey, myself and then Scholesy,” he said.

“But I think what the fans have got to look at is: Is the balance of the squad pretty good anyway without having that type of player in? You’ve got to say ‘yes’ as we won the title by 11 points.”

“Now, of course you always want to improve but you’ve got to look at the balance of Antonio Valencia, Ashley Young, Tom Cleverley, Michael Carrick, Ando [Anderson] and the rest. They are still very, very good players but you’ve got to look at the balance and is that right, rather than go out and try to get an individual who you must rely on all the time.

Thiago’s potential signing was lauded as the missing link to our midfield. He may not have been a physical powerhouse but his creative play going forward would have allowed Carrick to sit deeper and control the tempo of the game.

But Robson is convinced that the balance of the squad is good enough as it is.

He continued: “So my message to Manchester United fans is don’t be too influenced by this talk that we need this midfield player because I think the boys can cope.”

“I think you’ve got to ask David Moyes what he thinks about where the squad maybe needs tweaking. One thing he’s done great, so far, for United fans is no-one has gone out of the door.”

“If you look at the squad we’ve got at this moment in time, it’s a healthy squad with a great chance of retaining the championship next year.”

Sir Alex Ferguson had previously last bought a central midfielder in 2007 and with Fletcher’s illness, Scholes’ retirement, Powell’s lack of experience combined with Anderson and Cleverley’s potential being questioned, now seems to be the correct time to fill the gaping hole left alongside Michael Carrick.

David Moyes’ position in the hotseat would get off to a healthy start with the fans should he buy a marquee signing such as Kevin Strootman or Thiago Alcantara, who have been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months.

Providing re-assurance to fans, a move would solve any short-term concerns that this title winning side face in their defence for the title and quest for success in Europe.

As for the long-term, a central midfielder to reach the heights that the likes of Roy Keane and Paul Scholes in their prime once reached would be the first masterstroke of genius from David Moyes.

Delegates have been keen to register for the Football Industry Open day at Port Vales’ ground next Thursday, 8th August.

The event, is one of an established series organised by www.footballtradedirectory.com . This particular event is in conjunction with Bryan’s business, Bryan Robson Sport.

Funding for improvements and new development is a major obstacle for clubs, especially non-professional sides and he will explore some of the avenues Bryan Robson Sport have gone down to help.

There are also a range of other exhibitors, including Mars, Medoc, General & Medical Insurance, Ticketmaster, BareWall, FWP, BetBright, Mad About Pies, My Sticker Yearbook and mad About Pies to name a few.

There are 200 delegate places, and there is still time to book a place for this free event. In order to book your place, simply email john@sportsglobal.co.uk.

How Would Bryan Robson Fare in a Contemporary Manchester United XI ?
By Simon Edmonds (Featured Columnist) on August 5, 2013

Bryan Robson is widely remembered as one of the best talents that the English footballing system has ever produced.

Having made 90 appearances for the English national team (netting an impressive 26 times), Robson has gone on to enjoy a relatively successful managerial career with the likes of Middlesbrough and West Brom.

Despite—as is the case with any brilliant player that goes into management (Kevin Keegan springs to mind)—these latter ups and downs at the helm of a side have somewhat sullied the image of the lean and pacey central midfielder who once captured crowds with his abilities, Robson's legacy still lives on today.

Namesake Sir Bobby Robson once said of Bryan that he was "the greatest talent that England has ever produced" during an interview at Italia 90.

So surely, then, a player of this caliber could breeze into a United side desperately lacking in central-midfield talent?

The answer to that question may be slightly more complicated than one would imagine.

It's crucial to recall that Robson comes from not only a completely different era of football, but from a different era of tactics.

As a box-to-box midfielder, Robson was fortunate to have come into the game during the peak of the classic 4-4-2 formation (which has dwindled into relative obscurity in recent years).

The clustering of four midfielders in the center of a team's lineup allowed players like Bryan to flow forward with attacking prowess without leaving his defense exposed.

A perfect example of this issue in the modern game is the dilemma of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard playing in the same England starting XI.

Both players are primarily attacking in nature, and their desire to continuously push forward results in huge gaps being left in the England midfield at least once every game the duo play together.

In Robson's day, this would never have been an issue, with one of the other three midfielders covering the hole left by an attacking outburst.

As such, the central midfielder was allowed to roam forward and add a real goalscoring threat to a team (Robson scored 115 goals in the English top flight alone), as well as a defensive aspect when needed.

This densely packed midfield also gave Robson the freedom to track back and defend without the risk of a counterattack falling short of offensive numbers.

In the modern game, box-to-box midfielders are a dying breed—thanks primarily to the drastic shift in tactics, which has seen most teams adopt a policy of playing only three out-and-out midfielders.

The security, which would have once seen Robson able to roam the pitch so freely has been lost, with players now brought in to do "specialist" jobs.

While some "all-round" central midfielders do still exist (your Michael Essiens and Yaya Toures), in modern world football they have largely been replaced by utility players, with a special ability to play either a defensive or offensive role.

That's not to say that some players don't have the skill set to do both.

A perfect example of this would be Manchester United's current No. 1 transfer target, Cesc Fabregas.

The Barca star has shown a versatility throughout his career to play in either the offensive or defensive central midfield role.

Despite now player as more of a winger-cum-striker for Barca, Cesc epitomizes the changes that have occurred in recent years.

Undoubtedly a couple of decades ago, the Spaniard would have been used as more of a Robson-esque man of attrition, sprinting from one penalty area to the next.

However, instead of this he is forced to compromise and play the specific role that the given situation calls for.

While this does mean that Cesc can be swapped from the attacking to the defensive (or vice versa) side of things in the middle of a game, at no point will he be asked to occupy both roles at once as Robson (and perhaps more recently Roy Keane) was asked to at United.

With the exit of the likes of Keane and Patrick Vieira from the Premier League, the game changed, with new policies being adopted that all but eliminated the out-and-out "pure" central midfielder.

So, back to the question at hand: How would Bryan Robson fare in the current United set up?

The answer is a complicated one.

While Robson was undoubtedly a talented player, and one of the best that United and England have seen for a while, his style of midfielding would not fit in with the current tactical mantra at United.

That's not to say that Robson wouldn't find himself a place in the side. In fact, he almost certainly would.

Only that place in the starting XI would not be in the same ilk as it was before.

Bryan could be utilized as either a solely defensive or offensive player, but we would never see the same stamina-machine that once took the footballing world by storm.

If United re-adopted the policy of a 4-4-2 then in this magical scenario, Robson would probably breeze into the first XI, embracing his old style of play.

However, with the way the game is today, he would be competing with these "specialist" attacking and defensive players for a place in the side. Would he be good enough to beat them out?

Almost certainly, in this writer's opinion—but at the cost of the playing style that made him globally respected.

Maybe one day the game will revert back to how it once was, but for now, the days of the Bryan Robson-style central midfielder are gone.

Mengenal filosofi sepakbola dari seorang Bryan Robson

Man United and England legend, Bryan Robson tells football clubs why he is putting efforts into Grass Roots football

Former England and Manchester United legend was in the Potteries on Thursday. At Vale Park - the home of League 1 club Port Vale to be precise. It was only Robson's fourth ever visit to the ground, having previously been with United in the League Cup in 1983, then as a manager when at Middlesboro and then as an observer.

Robson told a packed football audience combining club and business delegates that his business, Bryan Robson Sports, was about 'putting something back into the game.'

He said he had been lucky to play at the highest level, and similarly manage some big clubs culminating in a two year stint as an international boss in charge of Thailand. He explained how important he felt it was to also be looking at the lower end of the football spectrum to ensure the grass roots game was there to provide players of the future.

The audience was asked to fire questions, hosted by BBC Radio Stoke's Lee Blakemoor, at Robson and he emphasised the need for clubs to have help in getting the right funding to improve facilities, training and coaching. Bryan Robson Sports, he explained, work with a series of partners to deliver different solutions for different situations.

He said in answer to a question about the aims of the buisness, ' I set Bryan Robson Sports up with the aim of helping sports clubs to develop new modern, sustainable facilities, which are much needed in this country at grassroots level.'

Interestingly for football fans generally, in answer to questions about his playing days he confirmed that Paul Gascoigne was the best player he had played with in his prime and that whilst he would never say never, he was unlikely to enter club management again.

The event was the latest in a series of Football Industry Days organised by leading football website www.footballtradedirectory.com.

The next event is at Bristol City's Ashton Gate Ground on Sept 12th
