Default Manchester United Pre-season 2021

Manchester United to face club legend Wayne Rooney's Derby in one of four pre-season fixtures... with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men also playing Premier League rivals Everton just a week before the start of the new campaign

* Manchester United start their pre-season by facing Wayne Rooney's Derby
* The Red Devils then face QPR six days later after a week-long training camp
* They finish pre-season with home matches against Brentford and Everton
* Manchester United will face club legend Wayne Rooney's Derby County in the first of four games in pre-season leading up to the new Premier League campaign.

Manchester United will face club legend Wayne Rooney's Derby County in the first of four games in pre-season leading up to the new Premier League campaign.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men also play another Championship side in Queens Park Rangers six days later on 24 July, before meeting newly-promoted Brentford and Everton in late July and early August.

Last season's Premier League and Europa League runners-up then kick off the new season against Leeds on home soil on the either 14 or 15 August.

Manchester United will face Wayne Rooney's Derby County in one of four pre-season games. Rooney is United's all-time record goalscorer but now manages the Rams in the Championship

A week-long training camp in the UK is planned between facing the Rams and Rooney - who is United's all-time top scorer with 253 goals - and QPR, while they will face the Premier League duo on home soil at Old Trafford.

'This year's pre-season schedule has been planned with the current travel restrictions in mind, whilst providing Ole and the players with the best possible preparations for the new season,' United chief operating officer Collette Roche said.

'Playing two pre-season matches at Old Trafford will also give us another opportunity to welcome fans back safely into the stadium ahead of the new Premier League season.'

There however is no room in the pre-season calendar for two pre-season friendlies against arch rivals Liverpool.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men will then have a week-long training camp somewhere in the UK. They will then face another Championship outfit in the form of QPR six days later

Sportsmail revealed in April that the two Premier League giants were in discussions to face each other at United's home in July and then on Merseyside a month later.

The plan was for fans to be welcomed back to both sporting arenas as part of the process of bringing supporters back into stadiums ahead of the new season when it was believed that all coronavirus restrictions were set to be lifted on Monday.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has since delayed that relaxation of restrictions until 19 July, but on Monday admitted it was 'looking good' that the date will be the 'terminus point' for England's coronavirus restrictions.

But United have announced that the number of fans able to attend Old Trafford in addition to any away fan allocations will be made in line with the Government's guidelines, and will be reviewed when the guidance for sports events is updated.

They then end pre-season with two games against top-flight opposition, firstly against newly-promoted Brentford

They then face Everton just a week before the new Premier League season gets underway

United will be hoping for a strong start to their pre-season as they attempt to improve on their second place finish in the Premier League in 2020-21.

The club will also be looking to end their four-year wait for a trophy in the upcoming campaign, having lost the Europa League final to Villarreal in May.

The Red Devils are also hopeful of having welcomed new additions by the time their pre-season gets underway next month.

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has been linked with a move, having turned down a new deal at the Bernabeu, where he has just 12 months left on his contract.

But Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly ready to rival United for the £43million-rated defender, who is currently away with France at Euro 2020.

Manchester United to step up their preparations during pre-season with a week-long training camp at Pennyhill Park - the state-of-the-art home to England's rugby union team - ahead of second friendly fixture against QPR

[I]* Manchester United will head to Pennyhill Park for a week-long pre-season camp
* The state-of-the-art facility in Bagshot is the HQ for England's rugby union team
* United's stars have been returning to training in stages ahead of the new season Manchester United are planning to step up their pre-season preparations with a camp at England rugby union's training HQ Pennyhill Park from next week.

United's players have been returning to their Carrington base in stages ahead of the new season and face Wayne Rooney's Derby County at Pride Park in their first friendly this Sunday.

By coincidence Rooney and his squad are at Pennyhill Park this week.

Manchester United's pre-season preparations will be stepped up with a camp at Pennyhill Park

Free agents Ravel Morrison, Phil Jagielka, Sone Aluko, Sam Baldock and even One Direction pop star Niall Horan, invited as Rooney's guest, have been among the faces on show at the elite training facility which staff have been very impressed with.

Derby’s head of performance Luke Jenkinson said: 'We’re in a world-class place and even though we’ve stayed in England this year (and not gone abroad), I’d argue there’s nowhere better for us to be right now.

'Some of the greatest teams have been here, England were here leading into the Euros, so we’ve got a lovely place to come, a lovely place to train, an excellent pitch, excellent gym, so we’ll make the most of it.'

The facility is the HQ for England's rugby union team and has even been lauded as 'world class'. England's men's football team had also trained at Pennyhill Park for their World Cup qualifiers

The facility in Bagshot, Surrey has been used by England's rugby squad since their World Cup win of 2003 and has been updated to provide indoor and outdoor pitches plus a state-of the-art gym. England's football team plus American NFL sides have also been among the more recent visitors.

United will stay at Pennyhill for the week before they take on QPR at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium on Saturday, July 24.

They return to Old Trafford to meet Premier League newcomers Brentford on July 28, then face Preston North End at Deepdale on July 31 and Everton on August 7, again at Old Trafford.
Tom Heaton, Dean Henderson, Scott McTominay, Mason Greenwood, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Phil Jones have all been at Carrington along with the club's Under 23s who are expected to figure against Derby, who remain keen on re-signing United defender Teden Mengi on loan.

United are expected to make an opening offer for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane after being assured the France international wants to come to Old Trafford.

They retain an interest in Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga but a move for Kieran Trippier is considered difficult in light of Atletico Madrid's current valuation.

New signing Jadon Sancho has been in for his medical this week but has flown to Turks and Caicos with Marcus Rashford for an extended break following their involvement at Euro 2020.

Manchester United kickstart their pre-season preparations with a 2-1 victory over Derby after Tahith Chong and Facundo Pellistri netted at Pride Park... with Colin Kazim-Richards firing home for Wayne Rooney's hosts

* Manchester United began their pre-season campaign with a 2-1 win over Derby
* Tahith Chong netted the opener for United after a rebound fell kindly in his path
* A host of youngsters starred for United with Facundo Pellistri catching the eye
* Pellistri rounded Kelle Roos to tap home into the empty net for United's second
* Derby had halved the deficit when Colin Kazim-Richards drilled in from distance

Manchester United have opened their pre-season preparations ahead of the new campaign with a 2-1 victory over Derby at a sunny Pride Park.

A heavily-rotated United team in the early throes of their first sessions this summer took the lead through Tahith Chong, before Facundo Pellistri netted the second goal.

The hosts, meanwhile, sported several players vying for contracts and delivered a showing which will give boss Wayne Rooney plenty to be optimistic about.

Manchester United kickstarted their pre-season preparations after a 2-1 victory against Derby. Tahith Chong netted United's first goal at Pride Park after a rebound kindly fell into his path

Colin Kazim-Richards drilled home a fine effort into the far corner to halve the deficit in the second half.

To little surprise, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to field a youthful side - with Tom Heaton making his second debut for the club and Juan Mata named as captain.

James Garner, Dylan Levitt, Anthony Elanga and Teden Mengi started, while Chong was a surprise name on the team sheet ahead of his loan spell with Birmingham.

But it was Derby who started the brighter ahead of the fresh-faced United, and goalkeeper Heaton, who arrived on a free transfer, was forced into action.

Facundo Pellistri impressed in the second half and coolly rounded Kelle Roos before tapping in

A ball was whipped into the box from the left-hand side, which Curtis Davies met and steered towards goal. Heaton clawed out superbly, and Brandon Williams cleared.

Soon after, though, United took the lead. Chong was able to steal the ball from Max Bird and attempted to clip neatly over the head of Kelle Roos.

The rebound then fell into his path kindly, and the Holland winger then slotted into the net from just a yard out.

There were appeals from the hosts over handball following the attempted chip, but with no VAR in operation, the goal was allowed to stand.

Derby again looked to take command following a much-needed water break in the sweltering conditions, and Tom Lawrence nodded narrowly over at the far post.

Veterans Curtis Davies, Phil Jagielka and United old boy Ravel Morrison all delivered tidy performances in the first half, and their team made two changes at the break.

United made a raft of substitutes, with Joe Hugill, Andreas Pereira, Shola Shoretire, Jesse Lingard and Pellistri among those given crucial minutes.

And it was the two starlets in Shoretire and Pellistri who combined for United's second goal of the afternoon.

Tom Heaton made his second debut for United and made a string of saves during the first half

Jesse Lingard delivered a bright performance and came inches away from scoring a third goal

The former slotted through the forward with a neat flick with the outside of his boot, and Pellistri skipped around the keeper to tap home.

Solskjaer then introduced Will Fish and Di'Shon Bernard at the back, but Derby pulled one back soon after.

A sloppy pass was capitalised on in style by Kazim-Richards, who glanced up from 25 yards and thrashed hard and low across Lee Grant.

Lingard tried to curl a jaw-dropping effort from a testing angle into the far corner, which cannoned off the crossbar, and United were able to hold on for the victory.

Default Re: Manchester United Pre-season 2021

Manchester United rocked by up to NINE Covid cases in camp a day after Brentford friendly, forcing Saturday's game with Preston to be called off in a major blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's pre-season plans for the new Premier League campaign

* Manchester United's pre-season friendly with Preston has been postponed
* The Red Devils reported a small number of positive Covid cases on Thursday
* United played Brentford in a friendly at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening
* The club are now awaiting PCR results following the positive lateral flow tests

Manchester United have been forced to postpone their friendly against Preston North End on Saturday following a Covid outbreak. It is understood there are up to nine positive cases.

Tests carried out following Wednesday's friendly match with Brentford - which was played in front of 30,000 supporters, revealed a small number of positive cases among Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's players and staff.

The initial lateral flow test alerted the club's medical team to the outbreak although results from the more accurate and in-depth PCR tests are still to be collated.

Manchester United's pre-season friendly with Preston has been postponed following a number of positive Covid cases in the Red Devils camp

Players had been in at United's Carrington training ground on Thursday morning for their usual warm down session following Wednesday's 2-2 draw with Brentford at Old Trafford.

But they were sent home and had left by 2pm on Thursday to self-isolate after tests started to indicate the virus was present.

United were due to play Championship side Preston on Saturday but have now been forced to announce the cancellation as fans were due to attend.

Brentford's game with fellow Premier League side West Ham may also be brought into question as they undertake their own testing.

A United statement confirmed: 'Maintaining Covid security is a priority for us.

'Following routine testing of the first team training group today, we have identified a small number of suspected positive cases. This has led to those people isolating, pending further tests.

Tests at United's Carrington training base showed up positive results among players and staff. Members of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad are now isolating pending the results of further tests

'As a precautionary measure based on covid protocols, we have taken the difficult decision that we will not now be able to play the friendly match against Preston North End this Saturday.

'We regret the disruption to Preston and disappointment caused to fans. Any Manchester United fans who have purchased tickets for the game will be automatically refunded.

'At this stage, we do not expect further disruption around our forthcoming matches, but we will continue to follow Premier League protocols in this regard.'

Anthony Elanga and Andreas Pereira were both on target as the Red Devils drew 2-2 with Brentford on Wednesday with Bruno Fernandes and Alex Telles among those watching on from the stands.

Elanga gave Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side the lead in the 12th minute before Shandon Baptiste equalised for the Bees.

Pereira restored United's lead with a stunning volley shortly after half-time before a 78th minute goal from Bryan Mbeumo brought the visitors level for a second time.

United's next and final pre-season match is against Everton at Old Trafford on August 7.
