Midtjylland U19s 3-1 Manchester United U19s: Nicky Butt's side crash out of the UEFA Youth League

* Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and James Garner starred for Manchester United
* But they were unable to prevent their side losing 3-1 during game in Denmark
* Gustav Isaksen scored twice with Oliver Olsen adding the third for the hosts

Manchester United's senior side maybe thriving in Europe but their youth team bowed out of continental competition on Wednesday.

Their Under 19s side, starring Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and James Garner — three players that have been involved in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's senior set-up — lost 3-1 against Midtjylland.

Gustav Isaksen was the star for the Danish hosts, scoring twice with Oliver Olsen getting the third.

Tahith Chong shows his frustration as Manchester United exit the UEFA Youth League

United's strike came through Gomes, who wore the armband for Nicky Butt's team.

It was a bright opening from Midtjylland and Isaksen. He burst from the halfway line 11 mintues into the match to little pressure.

Instead of playing it wide, he went for a low strike and it beat Matej Kovar before nestling in the corner of the United goal.

The visitors responded. D'Mani Mellor fed the ball to Ethan Laird. Laird worked his way into the box before being fouled by Patrick da Silva Ferreira Souza. Gomes then stepped up and struck in the penalty.

UNITED'S MATCH FACTS

Manchester United: Kovar, Laird (Williams 70), Ercolani (Elanga 84), Bernard, O'Connor; Garner, Gomes, Traore (Levitt 69); Chong, Mellor, Burkart (Traore 69)

Substitutes not used: Fojticek, Mengi, Galbraith

Goals: Gomes 31 (pen)

Bookings: Laird, O'Connor, Garner

Red cards: O'Connor

Lee O'Connor, who would later be sent off, plays a pass during the game in Denmark

United were comfortable but struggled to test Elias Rafn Olafsson in the Midtjylland net.

Then, with 18 minutes left on the clock, Isaksen doubled his personal tally. Christian Tue Jensen played in Isaksen, who finished accurately past Kovar to send the hosts ahead again.

Olsen wrapped it up for Midtjylland late on, finishing past Kovar after a nice move down the right side of the pitch.

A frustrated Lee O'Connor also picked up a second yellow card for a foul on Isaksen in stoppage time to see red.

Manchester United to put Neil Wood and Quinton Fortune in charge of U23s after departure of Ricky Sbragia

* Manchester United have been looking to add new staff to the Under-23 team
* Ricky Sbragia departed from his role as Under-23 coach at the end of May
* Neil Wood came through at academy level while Quinton Fortune played 126 times for United

Neil Wood and Quinton Fortune are to be put in charge of Manchester United's Under 23s.

United have been looking to recruit new staff following Ricky Sbragia's departure as U23 coach in May.

Both Wood and Fortune have experience of United's academy setup and how the club operates on a general level.

Quinton Fortune will take over as the assistant boss of Manchester United's Under 23s. United let former reserve-team boss Ricky Sbragia leave his role as part of an overhaul

Wood developed in United's academy but failed to make a single appearance for the first team. He will become head coach.

Fortune, who played 126 times for United after joining in 1999, will be Wood's assistant.

Both will work closely with first-team manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as United continue to try to blood players at the highest level.

Manchester United appoint Neil Wood as manager of U23s... and he will be assisted by ex-star Quinton Fortune

* Nicky Butt will be given an increased role in the Under 23s' coaching programme
* Quinton Fortune played 126 times for Manchester United and won the league
* Both Wood and Fortune expressed their delight at the new roles they had

Manchester United have announced Neil Wood will be their new Under 23s manager.

Wood, a former United youth team player, will be assisted in his new role by Quinton Fortune, who played 126 times for the Old Trafford side during his playing career and won the Premier League.

United's head of academy Nicky Butt will be given increased involvement in the Under 23s' coaching programme.

Neil Wood (left) has been appointed as Manchester United's new Under 23s manager. He will be assisted by their former star Quinton Fortune, who won the league with the club

Nicky Butt said: 'The academy is completely focused on producing well-rounded players for our first team and we believe that this new structure provides the perfect platform to achieve this aim.

'Myself, Neil and Quinton have long-standing connections with Manchester United and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to our roles that we will pass on to the young players.

'It is such an exciting time for the academy with Ole as first-team manager, who truly believes in the development of homegrown talent.

'It was a great source of pride that three academy graduates made their first-team debuts last season. As a group, we will now look to build on this success.'

Neil Wood added: 'It is a real honour to be appointed as lead coach for the Under 23s, I have learnt a lot about this age group over the last few seasons.

'This club has been a major part of my life since I joined the academy in 1999 and I am delighted to continue that relationship in this role.

'The academy has a fantastic record of developing players ready to play for Manchester United and the opportunity to have a role in continuing that tradition is extremely exciting.'

Quinton Fortune expressed his happiness at the new role and said: 'I am delighted to return to the club in this new role.

'As a former player, I know exactly what it takes and also what it means to play for Manchester United. I'll be passing on all of this experience to our young players as we look to define their individual development pathways.

'I have a great relationship with Ole, whom I also worked with at Cardiff when I was assistant manager of their Under 21s, and I look forward to working with him again alongside Nicky and Neil.

'We will all work together in order to achieve the ultimate aim of producing players capable of performing in Manchester United's first team.'

UNITED ARRANGE ACADEMY SUMMER TOURNAMENT

Manchester United are hosting a four-team tournament at Under-18s level at the AJ Bell Stadium.

The Academy has invited Arsenal, Flamengo and Porto to the innovative event on Friday and Saturday.

THE FORMAT

It is a round-robin tournament for players born on or after 1 September 2001. On Friday, United face Brazilian side Flamengo and Porto, with Arsenal also meeting the two overseas clubs.

On Saturday, Portuguese outfit Porto take on Flamengo before United come up against the Gunners. The third/fourth-placed play-off and final are scheduled for the afternoon.

The matches are 25 minutes each way, with a five-minute break for half-time. Up to six substitutions are allowed per team.

In the final play-off round to decide the tournament standings, penalties will take place if the scores are level at full-time.

The event will have an intimate collaborative learning environment with the only spectators present being players' parents, guardians and carers, plus staff from Manchester United.

The coaches will hold a briefing session on Friday as there is an opportunity to share ideas and develop relationships in a number of areas.

As a result, the tournament will provide an excellent football and cultural experience for the players, whilst also enabling parents to engage with the wider Academy programme.

We will be providing a full round-up of the inaugural Manchester United Under-18s Summer Tournament on Monday.

RYAN BELIEVES REDS NEED A LARGE UNDER-18S SQUAD

Manchester United Under-18s lead coach Neil Ryan is grateful he should have a large squad at his disposal next season with many challenges on the horizon.

The group has been boosted by the promotion of 11 first-year scholars, with the likelihood that more new names will follow once international clearance is received.

After a productive week in Austria at the Academy training camp, there has been ample opportunity for the youngsters to bond and build team spirit ahead of the big kick-off. It is anticipated that competition for places will help keep everybody on their toes.

Also, Mason Greenwood may be impressing for the first team on Tour 2019 but he remains eligible for the Under-18s next term.

“It’s a big number of boys,” Ryan told MUTV recently. “We’ve got decent numbers but, as tends to happen, we’ll have boys who go to the Under-23s and you’ll see certain boys who pick up knocks and niggles. We’re managing a big number at the moment but that’s great and we’re getting some really good training in.

”We have a couple of injuries that really carried on from last season but, this year, the boys have been in good form and they're working hard. Everyone is really pushing themselves. We want to keep them as fit and fresh as we can, and that’s the job of all the staff behind the scenes to monitor that and make sure we’re ready to go for the games coming up.“

The teenagers promoted from the Under-16s will appreciate it is a step up for them but those with a full campaign at Under-18s level already under their belts will be expected to take greater responsibility.

“It’s great when the new intake of players come in and they’re starting their lives as young professionals,” added Ryan. “It’s the day-in-day-out mentality and focus and they’re the things we’re trying to drive and instil in them and keep the intensity going in training as the weeks go on.

”Then we’re building up to games and pre-season friendlies and so on and, obviously, the second-year boys return with the experience of already having done that and they’re now expected to drive the group and show the standards that are expected.

“Everyone’s got their own individual challenges but, as a group, it’s important we get them fit, prepared and ready and get some team building ready for the season ahead.”

LOAN MOVE AGREED FOR FOJTICEK

Manchester United Academy keeper Alex Fojticek has agreed to join Stalybridge Celtic on loan for the season.

The Slovakian shot-stopper made two appearances for the Under-23s last term and made a further seven outings for the Under-18s.

The 19-year-old joined United in 2016 from Tatran Presov and will continue his development by working at the Aon Training Complex during the week and representing the Northern Premier League side throughout the course of the campaign.

“I'm looking forward to going out on loan,” Fojticek told us. “It will be good for me to experience men's football and, hopefully, start playing consistently.

”The most important thing is knowing, when Saturday comes, you're going to be in with a chance of playing and I am looking forward to competing every week and getting that rhythm.

“Les Parry [United's Academy player performance manager] brought me to a game at Stalybridge and the club have been brilliant in helping me with this move.”

The deal is designed to further Fojticek's experience, although he will still be eligible to feature in United's Under-23s, if required.

He becomes the third keeper to depart on loan this summer after Dean Henderson (Sheffield United) and Kieran O'Hara (Burton Albion).

Everybody would like to wish Alex the best of luck at Bower Fold.

TANNER JOINING MORECAMBE ON LOAN

We can confirm that Manchester United defender George Tanner will spend the 2019/20 season on loan at Morecambe.

The 19-year-old has made the temporary move to the League Two club to gain invaluable experience of first-team football.

The full-back broke into the Under-18 team, making 27 appearances in 2016/17 and a further 20 in all competitions in 2017/18.

He made more progress last season as he racked up 20 outings in all for the Under-23s.

Everyone at United wishes George well as he continues his development during his loan spell at the Globe Arena.

UNITED ANNOUNCE NEW ACADEMY DEALS

Manchester United is pleased to confirm new deals for Academy players in the Under-23s and Under-18s.

Two members of Neil Wood's squad, Paul Woolston and Luca Ercolani, have signed fresh contracts to continue their development with the Under-23s.

Woolston, a goalkeeper formerly with Newcastle United, appeared in the final two Premier League 2 matches of last season, while centre-back Ercolani has been at the club since 2016.

At Under-18 level, international clearance has now been received for three new additions.

Johan Guadagno is a 16-year-old keeper from IF Brommapojkarna in Sweden, while forwards Dillon Hoogewerf and Mateo Mejia have also joined.

Netherlands Under-16 international striker Hoogewerf arrives from Ajax and Mejia was previously with Real Zaragoza in Spain.

United have also reached an agreement with Monaco for Hannibal Mejbri to join the club subject to FIFA approval.

The 16-year-old midfielder has experience of the UEFA Youth League with the Ligue 1 side and represents France at youth level.

Bjorn Hardley is another player awaiting international clearance before his move to United can be completed. The 16-year-old Dutch defender was previously with NAC Breda.

We would like to welcome all the new additions to the club.
