Manchester United are considering a move for Burnley's £25million-rated centre-back Michael Keane this summer, two-and-a-half years after letting him leave Old Trafford for £2m.

The move would leave United open to criticism after paying Juventus a world record £89m to re-sign Paul Pogba when Jose Mourinho took over last year.

However, Mourinho believes Keane is one of the players that should have been kept at the club under Louis van Gaal but was allowed to leave along with the likes of Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez.

Van Gaal loaned Keane to Burnley in September 2014 and then agreed a permanent sale four months later.

It included a clause stipulating that United would receive a 25 per cent sell-on fee, so in theory they will now be able to sign him for less than any of their rivals.

Everton, Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City are also interested in the 24-year-old, and it is almost certain that he will leave Burnley at the end of the season.

Keane has matured into one of the best centre backs in the Premier League during his time at Turf Moor and made his full England debut against Germany last month.

Everton are confident that they will sign him, not least because Keane wants first-team football.

But the Merseysiders fear that a move from United could turn Keane's head and are understood to have drawn up a list of alternative options if Mourinho moves for the defender.

Manchester United are set to re-sign Michael Keane from Burnley in a £25million deal this summer.

It's understood that United have emerged as clear favourites to take the 24-year-old England centre-back back to Old Trafford.

Keane has developed into one of the Premier League's most highly-rated defenders since leaving United to join Burnley for £2m in January 2015.

United included a clause in the deal entitling them to 25 per cent of any sell-on fee, so they will have to pay less for Keane than any of their rivals.

Keane, who has continued to live in Manchester and is a boyhood United fan, can expect to quadruple his £25,000-a-week wages if he returns to a club that he first joined at the age of 11.

Louis van Gaal allowed him to go to Burnley on loan before sanctioning a permanent move to Turf Moor.

However, Jose Mourinho has identified Keane among several players that should have been retained by his predecessor, and has made him one of his top summer targets alongside Romelu Lukaku and Antoine Griezmann.

The move is bound to raise questions after United paid a world record £89m last summer to sign Paul Pogba, four years after selling him to Juventus for £800,000.

But it's understood there are no qualms among the Old Trafford hierarchy about re-signing Keane who made his England debut against Germany in March.

Keane is said to be desperate for a return to his boyhood club. The player and his advisors are seeking assurances that he will play in excess of 30 games a season, but that is unlikely to be a sticking point.

Chris Smalling could be the odd man out at United as Mourinho creates space in central defence.

Smalling has grown disillusioned at United this season after being singled out in public on several occasions by his manager for not making more of an effort to play when he was injured.

At the end of a bad week for English football comes an uplifting hour at Burnley's training ground in the company of one of the young players national coach Gareth Southgate will think about ahead of naming his first squad on Sunday.

Even before Sam Allardyce's fall from grace, he had defender Michael Keane in mind and the 23-year-old had no hesitation in revealing his ambitions ahead of his team's Premier League game against Arsenal at Turf Moor on Sunday.

'It's always in the back of my mind,' said Keane. 'It's an aim to get in the England team and I hope it happens sooner rather than later. New managers look to make their own stamp and bring their own players in. So, I don't expect it but I hope for it.

'I played for two years under Gareth Southgate in the Under 21s. I had a great relationship with him. I still do. Hopefully I can show him that I am still improving.'

Everton stand as favourites to land Michael Keane after a switch to Manchester United did not materialise.

Jose Mourinho's first-choice target Victor Lindelof completed his £30.7million move from Benfica on Wednesday night.

England international Keane wants to kick on with regular first-team football after drawing widespread plaudits last season.

The Burnley central defender has an admirer in Ronald Koeman, but Everton have yet to formalise their interest with the Clarets.

Liverpool are also monitoring Keane's situation, with the 24-year-old still expected to leave Turf Moor in the coming weeks.

Burnley have the option of allowing Keane to run the final year of his contract down should a transfer not come off.

Meanwhile, Everton director of football Steve Walsh was spotted in Milan on Wednesday for talks with Serie A sides over potential targets as Koeman plots an assault on the top six.

A striker is top of their agenda, given the likelihood of Romelu Lukaku departing for Chelsea. AC Milan's Carlos Bacca is said to be on their radar.

Liverpool - Michael Keane mengakui Everton memang bukan pilihan utamanya di bursa transfer musim panas ini. Adalah Manchester United yang sebenarnya jadi incaran Keane.

Menyusul performa okenya bersama Burnley musim lalu, Keane lantas jadi incaran banyak klub Inggris. Ada Liverpool, Everton, dan MU yang mengincar tanda tangan Burnley.

Tapi pada akhirnya Keane memilih bergabung dengan Everton dengan banderol 30 juta poundsterling, dengan bagian 25 persennya masuk kas MU sebagai pemilik Keane sebelumnya. Keane memang lulusan akademi 'Setan Merah' namun dia sulit mendapat tempat di tim inti dan cuma main tujuh kali di level senior sebelum pergi pada 2015.

Keane sendiri mengaku sebenarnya dia sempat tergoda untuk pindah ke MU mengingat eks klubnya itu meminatinya. Tapi pada prosesnya MU malah merekrut Victor Lindelof dari Benfica dan Keane akhirnya beralih ke Everton.

"Tentu saja kesempatan gabung lagi ke United itu menggoda. Itu adalah klub masa kecil Anda tapi terkadang Anda harus berpikir jernih untuk mengambil keputusan terbaik, dan saya merasa klub ini (Everton) adalah tempat terbaik untuk saya bermain serta berkembang lebih baik. Ini klub dengan sejarah besar dan punya basis fans besar, sehingga saya tak sabar untuk bermain bersama Everton," ujar Keane seperti dikutip Soccernet.

Bermain di Everton, Keane tentu akan mendapat sorotan lebih besar terlebih dengan harga mahal yang disandangnya. Meski demikian, Keane tak mempermasalahkan itu dan siap tampil sebaik mungkin bersama Everton agar bisa masuk skuat Inggris di Piala Dunia 2018.

"Saya cukup beruntung karena manajer sebelumnya memainkan saya di posisi terbaik, dan saya merasa bisa mendapat banyak pelajaran darinya (Koeman) yang merupakan mantan bek tengah kelas dunia. Saya ingin berkembang. Saya baru 24 tahun, yang mana itu termasuk muda untuk ukuran bek tengah, tapi saya merasa faktor terbesarnya adalah betapa mereka menginginkan saya," sambung pemilik dua caps bersama Inggris itu.
