Edinson Cavani's Uruguay team-mates come together to SLAM the English FA and accuse THEM of 'a discriminatory act' in incredible letter claiming banned Man United star's 'negrito' post ISN'T racist

* Uruguay players accused the FA of committing a discriminatory act against their culture by punishing Edinson Cavani for using the word 'negrito'
* The FA banned the Man United striker for three games for using a racial term
* Uruguay stars insisted he's never done anything that can be interpreted as racist
* Diego Godin is leading the fight to defend Cavani and shared a strongly-worded statement which condemned the FA for their biased vision and ignorance

Uruguay's football players - including Luis Suarez - have joined forces to emphatically condemn Edinson Cavani's three-match ban for using a racial term and accused the FA of committing a 'true discriminatory act' by punishing the Manchester United striker.

Cavani was hit with the suspension after using the word 'negrito' in an Instagram post after the club's victory over Southampton on November 29, before taking it down and apologising.

The United forward, who was also fined £100,000 and ordered to complete 'face-to-face education', accepted his punishment but insisted he was expressing himself 'according to my culture and way of life' and that the post was intended to show affection towards a friend.

The FA said last week that Cavani's comment was 'improper and brought the game into disrepute' but Uruguayan players have banded together to slam the 'reprehensible decision' to discipline their compatriot, with captain Diego Godin leading the fight to prove his team-mate isn't racist.

Suarez showed his strong support for the letter shared by the Cagliari defender by replying with the fist and raised-hands emojis.

The then Liverpool striker was handed an eight-match ban after the FA found him guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra during a game against Manchester United in 2011. He is alleged to have used the word 'negro', which he still denies.

Diego Godin is leading the fight to prove Manchester United's Edinson Cavani isn't racist after he was banned by the FA for three games for using a racial term online. Cavani was punished for using the word 'negrito' when responding to a message on Instagram

In a strongly worded statement, the Uruguayan Football Players Association said: 'We must condemn the arbitrary conduct of the English Football Association. Far from condemning racism, the English Football Association has itself committed a discriminatory act against the culture and way of life of the Uruguayan people.

'The sanction shows the English Football Association's biased, dogmatic and ethnocentric vision that only allows a subjective interpretation to be made from its particular and excluding conclusion, however flawed it may be.

'Edinson Cavani has never committed any conduct that could be interpreted as racist. He merely used a common expression in Latin America to affectionately address a love one or close friend.

'To sustain that the only way to obtain a valid interpretation in life is that which lies in the minds of the managers of the English Football Association is actually a true discriminatory act, which is completely reprehensible and against Uruguayan culture.'

Uruguay players joined forces to slam the FA, insisting they'd committed a 'true discriminatory act' on their culture by punishing Cavani for using a common Latin American expression'

It continued: 'We would therefore like to publicly defend Edinson Cavani's impeccable character and of course our country's culture. We are all against any kind of discrimination; however unfortunately, through its sanction, the English Football Association expresses absolute ignorance and disdain for a multicultural vision of the world, respectful of its plurality, by erroneously, unilaterally and rigidly imposing its anti-racist rules, the basis of which we support but are obviously not realistically applicable to the case in question here.

'It has not punished one person, but also our whole culture, our way of life, which is truly a discriminatory and racist act.'

The statement also urged the FA to review it's decision-making process and to overturn Cavani's suspension.

United confirmed last week that Uruguayan striker Cavani chose not to contest the charge out of respect for the FA and the 'fight against racism in football'.

Luis Suarez gave his emphatic support for the letter with this reaction on social media

Cavani accepted the ban but said 'I expressed myself according to my culture and way of life'. Statement from Uruguay players said Cavani has 'never committed any conduct that could be interpreted as racist' and urged the FA to overturn its sanction on the striker

Quote:
Full statement from Uruguayan Football Players Association

We must condemn the arbitrary conduct of the English Football Association. Far from condemning racism, the English Football Association has itself committed a discriminatory act against the culture and way of life of the Uruguayan people.

The sanction shows the English Football Association's biased, dogmatic and ethnocentric vision that only allows a subjective interpretation to be made from its particular and excluding conclusion, however flawed it may be.

Edinson Cavani has never committed any conduct that could be interpreted as racist. He merely used a common expression in Latin America to affectionately address a love one or close friend. To sustain that the only way to obtain a valid interpretation in life is that which lies in the minds of the managers of the English Football Association is actually a true discriminatory act, which is completely reprehensible and against Uruguayan culture.

We would therefore like to publicly defend Edinson Cavani's impeccable character and of course our country's culture.

It has not punished one person, but also our whole culture, our way of life, which is truly a discriminatory and racist act.

Lastly, we urged the English Football Association to review its decision-making processes related to these issues immediately so that it does not commit any similar injustice ever again. Its regulations should take into account the plurality of people's ways of life and cultures. The first rule to fight against racism is to respect such different ways of life and cultures.

By virtue of the foregoing, we request the FA to immediately overturn the sanction imposed on Edinson Cavani and reinstate his good name and honour in the world that has been son unfairly tarnished by this reprehensible decision.
'I do not want to extend much in this uncomfortable moment,' Cavani wrote on Instagram. 'I want to share with you that I accept the disciplinary sanction knowing that I am foreign to English language customs, but I do not share the point of view.

'I apologise if I offended someone with an expression of affection towards a friend, nothing further in my intention. Those who know me know that my effort always seeks the simplest joy and friendship!

'I appreciate the countless expressions of support and affection. My heart is at peace because I know that I always expressed myself with affection according to my culture and way of life. I send you a sincere hug.'

The 33-year-old has already served one game of his suspension, having missed United's victory over Aston Villa last week.

Unless the ban is overturned, he will also be unavailable for United's League Cup semi-final against Manchester City on Wednesday and the FA Cup match against Watford.

South American confederation CONMEBOL 'express their solidarity' with Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani as it joins his Uruguay team-mates in criticising FA ban for his 'negrito' Instagram post

* The FA banned the Man United striker for three games for using 'negrito' in a post
* Uruguay players accused the FA of committing a discriminatory act against their culture by punishing Edinson Cavani for using the word on his Instagram story
* CONMEBOL, the South American football confederation, has publicly backed Cavani and said the verdict 'does not take in account cultural characteristics'

CONMEBOL, the South American Football Confederation, has publicly expressed their 'solidarity' with Edinson Cavani and said the Football Association's decision to ban him for using a racial term 'clearly does not take in account cultural characteristics'.

Cavani was hit with the suspension after using the word 'negrito' in an Instagram post after the club's victory over Southampton on November 29, before taking it down and apologising.

On Monday, his Uruguay team-mates, including Luis Suarez, released a letter emphatically condemning Cavani's three-match ban. They went on to accuse the FA of committing a 'true discriminatory act' by punishing the Manchester United striker.

South American football federation CONMEBOL have joined the support for Edinson Cavani following his three match ban from the English FA for using 'negrito' in a social media post. In a statement on their website on Tuesday, CONMEBOL expressed solidarity with the striker

The FA said last week that Cavani's comment was 'improper and brought the game into disrepute' but CONMEBOL have now made their views public as they unequivocally throw their support behind the striker in the ongoing row.

'CONMEBOL express their solidarity with player Edinson Cavani, who was sanctioned by the English FA,' the confederation's statement read on Tuesday.

'The punishment handed to the said Uruguay international clearly does not take in account cultural characteristics and certain terms used in everyday life in Uruguay.

'The judgement on these types of declarations within the framework of a process which could lead to punishment for the athlete and could affect their reputation and good name, should always be carried out taking into account the context in which they were used and, above all, the cultural peculiarities of each player and each country.

'CONMEBOL condemns and will always condemn to the highest possible degree, any form of racist or discriminatory act, but the particular case for which Cavani was sanctioned does not form part of those.'

The United forward, who was also fined £100,000 and ordered to complete 'face-to-face education', accepted his punishment from the FA but he has continued to insist he was expressing himself 'according to my culture and way of life' and that the post was intended to show affection towards a friend.

CONMEBOL's backing for Cavani comes after a powerful defence by his international team-mates, who turned the focus back onto the FA.

Cavani chose not to contest the charge out of respect for the 'fight against racism in football'

'To sustain that the only way to obtain a valid interpretation in life is that which lies in the minds of the managers of the English Football Association is actually a true discriminatory act, which is completely reprehensible and against Uruguayan culture.'

The FA were STUNNED by Manchester United's lack of media training for Edinson Cavani... and accepted his claim 'negrito' was a friend's lifelong nickname but STILL banned him for three games for 'racist' Instagram post

* Edinson Cavani was handed a three-game ban for using the term 'negrito'
* The Manchester United forward used the term to describe his lifelong friend
* The FA still gave Cavani the ban despite seeing proof that this was a nickname
* The FA were also shocked that Cavani had not received media training by United

The FA gave Edinson Cavani a three-match ban and £100,000 fine for using an offensive term even though they saw proof that 'negrito' was a nickname for his lifelong friend.

The Manchester United forward received the sanction for racism on New Year's Eve after using the term in an Instagram post in response to his friend's online congratulatory message after scoring twice against Southampton in December.

In the written reasons published by the FA, English football's governing body received a video statement from Cavani's friend, Pablo Fernandez, confirming this was a long-term nickname used by the striker, along with several historic WhatsApp messages to prove this.

Mr Fernandez, who was described in the report as 'a man of Caucasian appearance similar to (Cavani)', admitted in the video statement that he did not take any offence with the social media remark and that he even uses it to describe his own son.

However, the FA concluded that any follower of English football without knowledge of South American culture would find the terms offensive and that Cavani did indeed break FA rule E3, which punishes anyone using 'insulting words or behaviour'.

The FA Commission did point out that they agreed there was no racial or offensive intent in the post by Cavani.

The FA were also left surprised that Cavani was not given any media training by Manchester United despite having an Instagram following of 7.9million.

The report also reveals how both the player and the club have taken steps to ensure Cavani has a better understanding of social media responsibilities.

The decision to ban Cavani was met with hostility by several Uruguayan players, including Luis Suarez, who accused the FA of making a 'true discriminatory act' in banning the 33-year-old.

The strongly worded statement from the Uruguayan Football Players Association read: 'The sanction shows the English Football Association's biased, dogmatic and ethnocentric vision that only allows a subjective interpretation to be made from its particular and excluding conclusion, however flawed it may be.

'I appreciate the countless expressions of support and affection. My heart is at peace because I know that I always expressed myself with affection according to my culture and way of life. I send you a sincere hug.'

Cavani has served two out of his three matches as part of his punishment, with the final match being Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie with Watford.

Gary Neville insists Edinson Cavani has forced his way into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's best Manchester United starting XI by 'making the spot his own' and Anthony Martial misfiring

* Gary Neville believes Edinson Cavani is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's go-to striker
* The Uruguayan, 33, has impressed since arriving on a free transfer last summer
* Cavani has played second fiddle to last season's top scorer Anthony Martial
* However, Neville says Cavani is the starting frontman amid Martial's poor form

Gary Neville believes that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has found his best Manchester United XI as the Old Trafford legend opined that Edinson Cavani is the manager's go-to striker.

United drew 0-0 at Arsenal on Saturday searching for a response from their shock 2-1 loss to Sheffield United at home in midweek, dealing a blow to their title charge having climbed the league in recent months.

Solskjaer wrung the changes for their trip to north London at the weekend, with veteran marksman Cavani coming in for Anthony Martial, who has struggled for form this season.

Having fired 23 goals in all competitions to become the club's top scorer last campaign, the Frenchman has struck just five goals in 25 games thus far.

And although Solskjaer publicly backed the 25-year-old in the build up to this weekend's game, the Norwegian opted for the experience of Cavani as United look to close the gap on league leaders City.

Neville believes that the Uruguayan is Solskjaer's first choice moving forwards, having made a positive impression since arriving on a free transfer last summer.

Gary Neville believes Edinson Cavani has forced his way into Man United's best starting XI. The 33-year-old has made a positive impression since arriving on a free transfer last summer

'I think Ole has been quite consistent, in the big games this is the team that he plays,' the former defender said on Sky Sports.

'One change that I think will be permanent, Cavani has proved himself in the last few months. I think he has made that spot his own and this is the team that Ole goes to.'

Neville gave his view of United's poor result against the Blades, who sit bottom of the league, arguing that the Red Devils were undone by an expectancy to rouse another comeback.

A misfiring Anthony Martial, who has scored five in 25 games, has opened the door for Cavani. And Neville says the Uruguayan is Solskjaer's go-to man as they bid to win the league title

'Watching that game in midweek it looked like the players had imagined they have been in this position so many times that they come back in the second half but they came unstuck.

'I think they will feel a little more pressure coming into this game after what happened on Wednesday.'

Former PSG striker Cavani has scored five goals in 19 appearances for United this season.

Edinson Cavani reveals he doesn't give out advice but instead 'prefers to support and be there for help' because he's not fan of having things imposed on him... as Man United striker aids Rashford, Greenwood and Co

* Edinson Cavani revealed he doesn't like to give out advice at Manchester United
* But the striker is keen to support his team-mates and lead by example at the club
* Cavani has impressed since his move in October and has scored six league goals
* His contract expires at the end of the season but there is an option to extend

Edinson Cavani revealed he is happy to support his younger team-mates at Manchester United, but won't force any advice on them.

Mason Greenwood recently spoke of how much he values having Cavani to learn from, and the veteran striker's move to Manchester has so far been a successful one.

The Uruguayan's six league goals this season make him United's third top scorer, behind Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford, but Cavani's role at the club extends beyond just finding the back of the net on the pitch.

Edinson Cavani says he is happy to help support the younger forwards at Manchester United

But he says he won't force any advice on others as he doesn't like being told what to do himself

'As someone who is a bit older, there are things that you notice that maybe they, as younger players don't quite see yet,' Cavani told ManUtd.com.

'Just normal everyday football things. I'm here to give the best I can give of myself and to occasionally offer my opinion on things.

'Honestly speaking, I don't really like to just give out advice. I prefer to support and be there to help.

'I like to give my best. If someone would like to take something on board as an example, something that I've done, then yes, by all means.

'I don't like it when people try to impose things on me or tell me what I have to do.'

Cavani says he is committed to giving his all in every training session as well as on the pitch. The Uruguayan has scored three goals in his last five league starts, including against Everton

Alongside Cavani, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has an array of attacking talent at his disposal, and United are currently the top scorers in the Premier league.

And the striker believes that the work done on the training pitch can be crucial in aiding the younger players at the club.

'I'm here to do my absolute best and to accompany and support this team. I'm here to leave everything I have out on the field - not just in a game, but in training too,' Cavani said.

'Then, if a young player comes up and asks me something, or a youngster sees things during a training session that they'd like to incorporate into their game, I'm always here to help.

Cavani came off the bench to score twice against Southampton in a 3-2 win back in November

'I'll be there to offer support and I'll do my best with it. If they want to take it on board and take it as an example, I'd be happy.

Cavani joined United in October on a one-year deal, though there is the option for his spell in Manchester to be extended for a further year and it looks likely that may be the case.

It is certainly not the first time United have signed a big-name player late in their career, but the striker, who recently turned 34, has made an impressive impact.

His first major impression at the club came back in November, when he came off the bench to score twice and inspire his side to come from behind and win 3-2 away at Southampton.

The Uruguayan has three goals in his last five starts in the Premier League, and has increasingly cemented himself in the first team after initially being restricted to substitute appearances.

Manchester United set for talks with Edinson Cavani to decide veteran striker's Old Trafford future, confirms Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - with club likely to extend contract after 34-year-old's impressive start

* Edinson Cavani joined Manchester United as a free agent on a one-year contract
* The 34-year-old has emerged as the club's first-choice striker this season
* United are set for talks with Cavani to decide whether he will stay at Old Trafford
* Coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been impressed with Cavani's professionalism

Manchester United hope to resolve Edinson Cavani’s future at Old Trafford by the end of next month.

Cavani signed a one-year contract when he joined United as a free agent in October, and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated the club are keen to exercise a clause extending it by a season.

The 34-year-old Uruguay striker has scored seven goals in 24 appearances, although he is a doubt for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Newcastle at Old Trafford due to a muscle injury.

As a rule, United like to sort out all contract issues by the end of March and will hold talks with Cavani’s representatives in the coming weeks.

‘I can only say Edinson has done well,’ said Solskjaer.

‘I’ve been impressed by him. He’s gelled in the group and we’ll sit down and speak with him in the near future to see his plans and our plans.

'It’s a good discussion to have. We always speak to the players and we’re very pleased with what he’s done.’

United must also make a decision on Juan Mata who made only his 11th appearance of the season as a late substitute in the Europa League win over Real Sociedad in Turin on Thursday.

Solskjaer said this week that Mata, who turns 33 in April, has 'been away for a little while' and it seems unlikely the Spaniard will be offered a new deal.

Goalkeepers Sergio Romero and Lee Grant are the other players out of contract at the end of the season, with Romero certain to leave as a free agent.

Manchester United are planning talks with Edinson Cavani to decide if the striker will stay. Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been impressed with Cavani's professionalism since his arrival

Meanwhile, Solskjaer has once again refused to admit defeat to Manchester City in the title race even though United trail their rivals by 10 points.

'I don't think anyone would say they're not going to go for it,' said the United boss. 'We're going to go for a win every single game we play, of course we are.

Manchester United to hold talks with Edinson Cavani over his future after reports claim he wants to LEAVE the club and fulfil his boyhood dream of playing for Argentinian outfit Boca Juniors this summer

* Edinson Cavani only joined Manchester United on a free transfer last October
* Reports in Argentina claim he wants to leave and join Boca Juniors this summer
* It's claimed Cavani will reject an extension to join Boca on a three-year contract
* The striker is said to have dreamed of playing for the club since he was a kid
* Cavani will take a pay cut to return to a more rural way of life in South America
* He has scored seven goals in 25 appearances for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side

Manchester United will hold talks with Edinson Cavani over his future amid claims the Uruguay star wants to leave Old Trafford for Boca Juniors.

Reports in South America on Monday said Cavani has decided to join the Argentine club on a three-year contract and take a pay cut rather than extend his current deal at United.

The 34-year-old striker signed a short-term contract until the end of the season worth £9million when he arrived at Old Trafford as a free agent on deadline day in October.

It has the option of a 12-month extension which has to be agreed by both parties, and United were planning talks with Cavani and Walter Guglielmone, his agent and brother, before Monday's developments.

The club are said to be keen to keep the former Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli player next season, but Cavani has yet to commit and is understood to want assurances over his role.

Speaking last month, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: 'I can only say Edinson has done well. We'll sit down and speak with him in the near future to see his plans and our plans.'

Cavani has scored seven goals in 25 appearances for United but missed a number of games.

He didn't make his debut for nearly three weeks after joining the club and has been absent for five of the last six matches due to muscle injuries.

Cavani was also banned for three games in January and fined £100,000 for using the word 'negrito' in a social media post.

The episode is said to have left him feeling that he was unfairly treated by the FA.

The Uruguayan is friends with Boca president Juan Roman Riquelme and revealed in October that they have spoken about a move to the Argentine club this summer.

'Boca is a giant of the world, any player would love to play for them,' said Cavani.

'There are some secrets from the talk with Roman, you have to ask him if he wants to tell them. We will see what happens in the future.'

Cavani remains a doubt for United's Europa League tie against AC Milan on Thursday, and Marcus Rashford is also struggling to be fit after sustaining an ankle injury in the win over Manchester City.

It's understood Rashford has not damaged ligaments but suffered heavy swelling around the joint.

Mohammad Resha Pratama - detikSport

Edinson Cavani insists he is 'proud to wear the Man United shirt' after his father said his son 'does not feel comfortable in England' and 'would like to play for Boca' - as veteran looks set for summer exit after just one season at Old Trafford

* Edinson Cavani's father insists the striker is not happy at Manchester United
* Luis Cavani claimed his son is ready to quit the club and return to South America
* He even suggested his son has already contacted Boca Juniors over a move
* The striker took to Instagram on Tuesday to say he was 'proud' to play for United

Edinson Cavani says he is proud to wear the Manchester United shirt after his father had suggested the striker could be set to quit the club and move back to South America to be closer to his family.

Cavani's contract expires in June and United have been keen to discuss his future.

The 34-year-old was fined £100,000 by the FA for the use of 'negrito' in a social media post earlier in the season and wants to head back to South America.

The episode is said to have left him feeling that he was unfairly treated by the FA, with his father revealing that his time in England will likely come to an end.

'My son does not feel comfortable in England and wants to be close to the family again,' Luis Cavani told TyC Sports.

'Edinson had many conversations with [Juan Roman] Riquelme and he would like to play for Boca.

'He was always seduced by the idea of playing in Boca. If he returns to South America he is leaning towards Boca.

'By the middle of the year he will return to South America. My son's idea is not to continue there. He wants to return.'

However, the former Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli striker took to social media on Tuesday night to play down suggestions his heart is no longer in it at Old Trafford.

He uploaded a picture to Instagram of him playing for the Red Devils alongside the caption: 'Proud to wear this shirt @ManUtd.'

Upon hearing reports that he wanted to leave, United are keen to hold talks with Cavani over his future.
