Real Madrid pocket £46m in bonuses for winning Champions League crown as 32 teams split massive UEFA fund of £726m

* 'Decima' triumph earns Cristiano Ronaldo's team £46m in bonuses
* Beaten finalists Atletico Madrid take £40.1m from £726m prize pot
* Quarter-finalists Manchester United make just under £36m; semi-finalists Chelsea £34.85m
* Paris Saint-Germain stripped of £16m for Financial Fair Play breach

Real Madrid's historic La Decima triumph in the Champions League last season netted them a whopping £46m, according to the official UEFA breakdown.

The Spanish giants beat city rivals Atletico 4-1 in a memorable Lisbon final to win their first European Cup since 2002 and their tenth overall.

And they consequently pocketed the biggest share of UEFA's £726m prize fund for the 32 clubs that qualified for the group stage.

Pay day: Real Madrid's 10th European Cup triumph earned them £46m from UEFA's prize fund of £726m last season

Beaten finalists Atletico earned £40.1m for their efforts, putting them third on the Champions League money list.

Paris Saint-Germain split the Madrid sides despite bowing out in the quarter-finals, getting £43.7m thanks mainly to lucrative French TV rights.

However, UEFA is withholding £16m as a fine for overspending in breach of their Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

Bonus: Beaten finalists Atletico collected £40.1m for their exploits in reaching a first European Cup final for 40 years

Losing out: Paris Saint-Germain earned £43.7m from last season's competition, but will lose £16m for breaching UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations

Manchester United, Juventus, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Barcelona all earned at least £32m despite failing to make the final.

United, who lost to Bayern in the last eight, made just shy of £36m, more than neighbours City (£28.4m).

Chelsea, who crashed out to Atletico in the semi-finals, were rewarded with £34.85m, while London rivals Arsenal took home £21.87m.

It shows that despite United's failings last season, they can still command the biggest slice of TV money.

Belgian side Anderlecht's £9.7m payment was the lowest.

Financial boost: Manchester United earned the most of the English teams - just under £36m - despite losing the Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals

UEFA Announces 2013-14 Champions League Financial Distribution

t’s no secret that European football is wealthier than wealthy, but just how rich a game is it? The Champions League plays host to the continental best every season, and UEFA has announced how much every individual club earned from their respective campaigns.

As UEFA’s official website revealed, all 32 competing teams shared €904 million between them from the federation’s funding—matching the record set in 2012-13.

The statement revealed exactly how it works, with clubs receiving funding for a number of different factors:

Quote:
Each club was entitled to a minimum payment for participation in the competition. Additionally, performance bonuses were paid for every win or draw in the group stage and each knockout round successfully negotiated, while monies from the market pool were divided according to the proportional value of the national television market allocated to each individual club, among other factors.
Real Madrid took the most pocket money home from UEFA having lifted the trophy, with a staggering €57.4 million going back to the Bernabeu.

While each club earned a minimum of €12.2 million, progressing further in the tournament means a little financial bonus to go with the feeling of success, per UEFA’s report:

“€3.5m for the last 16, an additional €3.9m for the quarter-finals, €4.9m more for the semis, and €6.5m extra for the final.”

Premier League clubs did rather well out of competing among Europe’s elite, too, with Arsenal’s distribution of €27.2 million the lowest figure for the division.

Elsewhere, Manchester City earned €35.4 million, semi-finalists Chelsea racked up €43.4, while Manchester United took home €44.8 million.

Though Chelsea progressed further than Manchester United, the fact that the Blues lost two games in the group means that they missed out on UEFA’s draw bonus of €0.5 million per game—which United pocketed thanks to two draws and four wins in the group stage.

Belgian champions Anderlecht picked up the lowest sum from UEFA at €12.2 million having lost all but one of their group matches, but even that’s a considerable sum of money.

It’s no surprise that the race for a place in the top four in the Premier League is so fierce, as the prize of European football is truly staggering.

With Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal all representing England in next season’s competition, you can expect big spending from all clubs with UEFA’s distribution helping them greatly on the financial fair play front.

Manchester United, however, will have to cope without their guaranteed millions next term. But most importantly, not having the thrill of Champions League football at Old Trafford will make every penny hurt even more.

Champions League referees cause confusion in new grey kit

* Officials wear new grey Adidas kit for first time in opening games
* Dark shirt appears to clash with Arsenal's dark blue away kit
* Gunners players leave the ball for referee several times in first half

They say a good referee should blend in to the extent that you barely know they're on the pitch.

But UEFA may have taken that mantra a step too far, after their new Champions League kit received criticism on its first outing in the tournament.

The new kit, a dark shirt, with pale grey shorts, appeared to clash with some of the teams on the opening day, particularly Arsenal in their away tie against Borussia Dortmund.

UEFA referees were wearing the new Adidas kit in all of Tuesday night's Champions League games

Arsenal and the referee both wore dark shirts in Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion on Tuesday night

The officials were dressed in all grey, with a darker shirt and pale shorts, prompting scorn on social media

The Gunners were wearing their third choice kit, with shirts, shorts and socks all dark blue, and this looked to be a little too close to the all-grey officials.

Several time Arsenal players appeared to leave the ball to the referee at the Westfalenstadion, as the new Adidas strip caused confusion.

Paul Scholes Rates Champions League Hopes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, City

Manchester United aren't involved this season, but ex-Red Devil Paul Scholes still feels England's bastions can leave their mark on the 2014-15 Champions League.

Speaking on ITV (h/t Daily Mail's Andy Hampson), Scholes picked out Liverpool as a surprise package worth keeping an eye on, as well as weighing in on the prospects of Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea:

Quote:
Liverpool are the dark horse of the competition this year. Brendan Rodgers has done a fantastic job. The style of play he’s adopted is exciting to watch and the players seem to have taken to him. I feel they will do well with the players they have.

The big advantage they have is a home crowd. Anfield is always a hostile place to go, which is something Manchester City lack.

Champions League will be their [City's] main focus for the season. Their owners will want to see them push on in the Champions League. They have a tough group this year, but with the players they have they need to go on to win it, and there’s really little excuse not to do well.
Scholes' comments come but a few days after both Premier League giants stumbled in their most recent domestic fixtures, with the Reds losing to Aston Villa 1-0 at home while the Citizens drew 2-2 at the Emirates Stadium.

The Old Trafford icon went on to outline Arsenal's uncanny knack for progressing past the group stage but failing to do much past that phase of the tournament. He also queried whether Chelsea's European hopes will suffer due to a lack of focus:

Quote:
They (Arsenal) always qualify and always seem to get through the group. The only problem with Arsenal is when they meet top teams, they don’t seem to have the consistent level of mental strength to get through it.
Quote:
Whilst The Champions League is the ultimate trophy for any club team, I believe Chelsea’s main objective is winning the Premier League this season. If you ask Jose Mourinho what you’d rather win now, I think the answer would be the Premier League.
The Gunners are coming up against a familiar opponent, having faced Borussia Dortmund in last season's Group F tussle that saw the Germans just edge top spot on away goals.

City also finished as runners-up in their group last season and will themselves revive a German rivalry, facing Bayern Munich in the group stage for the third time in four years.

In last year's second match, Manuel Pellegrini's side triumphed 3-2 against Der FCB at the Allianz Arena, falling just one goal short of topping the group.

However, Norwegian pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft doesn't feel those heroics will be on display again this time around:

Quote:
Germany vs England in ChampionsLeague this week. Chelsea BIG favourite vs Schalke Draw Dortmund - Arsenal Bayern-win vs Man City ?????

— Jan Aage Fjortoft (@JanAageFjortoft) September 15, 2014
Last season saw all four English clubs advance from the first round. Liverpool take the place of United this year and each outfit again has realistic chances of progression.

According to beIN Sports' Tancredi Palmeri, Premier League sides can have a "statistical" advantage in drawing easier groups:

Quote:
Likely Pot 2 in Champions League will turn into the real bomb of the draw, but statistically English and Spanish clubs can draw softer groups

— Tancredi Palmeri (@tancredipalmeri) September 11, 2014
Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City may argue otherwise with Real Madrid, Dortmund and Bayern to encounter, respectively, but Scholes clearly feels England's big guns are on a par with the rest of their continental counterparts.

Recent years have seen German and Spanish clubs dominate the later phases of the Champions League, with 13 of the last 16 semi-finalists coming from the Bundesliga and La Liga.

With the Premier League smashing its previous summer transfer window record spend this year, however, clubs are evidently making their bid to reclaim a status of European renown.

A two-time Champions League winner himself, Scholes will be fully knowledgeable of the skill and squad quality needed to take home such a title, and he feels English teams could be on the march once more.

Milan's San Siro stadium to host 2015-16 Champions League final as Basle's St. Jakob-Park secures Europa League final

* AC Milan and Inter Milan are current occupants of the famous ground
* San Siro last held the final in 2001, with Bayern Munich beating Valencia
* This season's final will be held at Berlin's Olympiastadion
* Basle's St. Jakob-Park, with a 38,000 capacity, will host the Europa League
* This year's Europa League final will be held at Stadion Narodowy, Warsaw
* The UEFA Super Cup match will be in Trondheim, Norway

UEFA have announced the 2015-16 Champions League final will be held at Milan's San Siro stadium.

The San Siro, occupated by Serie A giants Inter Milan and AC Milan, last held a Champions League final in the 2000-01 season, when Bayern Munich and Valencia played out a 1-1 draw before the Germans won on penalties.

The San Siro stadium is home to Inter Milan and AC Milan, and has a capacity of 80,000

Bayern Munich won the last Champions League final to be held at the San Siro, beating Valencia on penalties

It also staged the 1965 final between Inter Milan and Benfica and the 1970 final between Feyenoord and Celtic.

This season's final will be held at Berlin's Olympic Stadium for the first time since its renovation for the 2006 World Cup finals.

Basle's St. Jakob-Park, with a 38,000 capacity, will host the Europa League final. The Swiss ground held six European Championship games in 2008.
The UEFA Super Cup match will be in Trondheim, Norway at the Lerkendal Stadion.

Danny Welbeck joins elite club of hat-trick heroes

* Arsenal striker joins Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen in elite club
* Galatasaray keeper Fernando Muslera extinguished flurry of flares thrown onto the pitch by his own fans
* The official attendance was 59,803 but there were plenty of empty seats at The Emirates on Wednesday night

An Englishman scoring a hat-trick in the Champions League is a rare phenomenon.

Only Wayne Rooney (September 2004 v Fenerbahce) and Michael Owen (December 2009 v Wolfsburg) have managed it in the past 10 years.

Arsenal's Danny Welbeck celebrates completing his hat-trick on Wednesday night

Danny Welbeck joined Mike Newell, Andy Cole (with two), Alan Shearer, Owen (twice) and Rooney in the European hat-trick club.

Newell scored the fastest-ever hat-trick in the Champions League, netting his three goals in a spell of only nine minutes for Blackburn against Rosenborg in 1995.

Cole scored his first hat-trick for Manchester United against Feyenoord in 1997 and his second against Anderlecht in 2000.

Shearer claimed his treble for Newcastle against Bayer Leverkusen in 2003.

UEFA confirm FIVE English clubs could qualify for next season's Champions League if Tottenham or Everton win Europa League

* Europa League winners will gain entry to Champions League
* If Tottenham or Everton win the Europa League, the Premier League will have five representatives in Europe's elite competition
* It was suggested that the top three and Europa League winner would qualify - making four - but UEFA have confirmed this will not be the case
* Tottenham have missed out when finishing in top four as Chelsea won the European Cup

The Premier League could have five teams in the next season's Champions League after UEFA confirmed the top four and Europa League winner will qualify for Europe's elite competition.

There was a suggestion the entry for the Champions League from England would be reduced to the top three and Europa League winner - making four - if Tottenham or Everton won the competition.

But UEFA have told Sportsmail they will allow five teams to enter the Champions League if Mauricio Pochettino or Roberto Martinez's side are victorious.

Everton will gain entry to the Champions League next season should they win the Europa League this term

Spurs will be keen to finish in the top four but have been given an extra route into the Champions League

Having each finished in the top four in the last decade, both Everton and Tottenham missed out after rival teams who failed to qualify via the Premier League went on to win the Champions League.

In May a UEFA statement read: 'The Europa League winners could gain direct access to the group stage, should the Champions League title-holders also qualify via their domestic league, thus freeing up a place in the Champions League group stage.'

Everton, who had previously been tipped for relegation, enjoyed an incredible season to finish fourth in 2005 only for Merseyside rivals Liverpool to beat AC Milan on penalties in the Champions League after a stunning comeback from three goals down.

UEFA decided that Liverpool, as winners, should not be denied a place in the competition and so both teams played in the following season's qualifying rounds.

While the Reds were eventually knocked out in the last 16 by Portuguese giants Benfica, Everton were unlucky to be beaten by Villarreal in the third qualifying round after Italian referee Pierluigi Collina ruled out a Duncan Ferguson header as the Spaniards went on to win 4-2 on aggregate before making it to the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, in 2012, Tottenham were excluded from the Champions League, despite finishing fourth, because of Chelsea's triumph in the competition.

Unlike the Toffees, the north London club went straight into the Europa League rather than being given entry to the Champions League qualifying rounds.

After past disappointments, Everton and Tottenham will be desperate to take advantage of UEFA's recent ruling and make certain of their place on Europe's top table.
