Default ManUtd Semi success - FA Cup

7/04/2009 09:17, Report by Steve Morgan
Semi success: 1909-90

Sunday's Wembley summit with Everton is United's 26th FA Cup semi-final tie - a competition record. Here's a reminder of the Reds' victories at this stage from 1909 to 1990...

1908/09 United 1 Newcastle Utd 0, Bramall Lane, 27.03.09
Ernest Mangnall’s charges see off Newcastle – one eye on wresting the title from the Reds' grasp – through Harold Halse’s goal. United go on to beat Bristol City 1-0 at Crystal Palace. Finishing 13th in the league is evidently lucky – as it was for Sir Alex in 1990, when he won his first trophy.

1947/48 United 3 Derby County 1, Hillsborough, 13.03.48
It’s Rams to the slaughter in United's first semi-final for 22 years – a campaign that will end with Sir Matt’s first trophy. Salford lad – and Morrissey look-alike – Stan Pearson’s hat-trick books the club’s second Cup final appearance and a first at Wembley.

1956/57 United 2 Birmingham City 0, Hillsborough, 23.03.57
The Busby Babes in their pomp are just too cute for the mid-table Midlanders. Goals from Johnny Berry and Bobby Charlton, still six months short of his 20th birthday, have the tie won within the opening 13 minutes.

1957/58 United 2 Fulham 2, Villa Park, 22.03.58; United 5 Fulham 3 (Replay), Highbury, 26.03.58
With Munich tears barely dried, United dig deep. Bobby Charlton, back for the quarter-final win over West Brom, spares the Reds' blushes with a late equaliser at Villa Park. In the replay, a hat-trick from 18-year-old rookie Alex Dawson ensures a Wembley send-off for the Babes. And, fittingly, Charlton has the last word with the fifth.United lose in the final, though – 2-0 to Bolton.

1962/63 United 1 Southampton 0, Villa Park, 27.04.63
Denis Law ends his first season as a Red with 29 goals, sending United to Wembley with the only goal of a dour affair against Second Division Saints. At Wembley, Busby’s five-year, post-Munich plan is realised when his relegation-threatened side upset the form-book, larruping Leicester City.

1975/76 United 2 Derby County 0, Hillsborough, 03.04.76
Gordon Hill's brace books a first Cup final berth since '63 with boss Tommy Docherty quipping: “This is the first final to be played at Hillsborough. The other semi is a bit of a joke.” It's no joke when favourites United lose the final to Southampton...

1976/77 United 2 Leeds United 1, Hillsborough, 23.04.77
The Reds roar into a 2-0 lead through Jimmy Greenhoff and a Steve Coppell pile-driver. One-dimensional Leeds, resorting largely to hoofed balls up to Joe Jordan, pull one back through Allan Clarke’s penalty but the Reds still avenge the 'semi defeats in '65 and '70.

1978/79 United 2 Liverpool 2, Maine Road, 31.03.79; United 1 Liverpool 0 (Replay), Goodison Park, 04.04.79
Mid-table league form (the Reds finish ninth) is offset by a good Cup run, with Brian Greenhoff and Joe Jordan looking to have the tie won before Alan Hansen’s late equaliser forces a replay. United win the second game at Goodison 1-0 when Brian’s brother Jimmy stoops to conquer late on.

1982/83 United 2 Arsenal 1, Villa Park, 16.04.83
A double of sorts as the Gunners are seen off in both the League and FA Cup semis. In the latter, the Reds recover from Tony Woodcock’s opener (the first goal conceded in the Cup campaign) to win through with a goal from Bryan Robson and Norman Whiteside’s terrific volley. Big Norm later becomes the youngest player to score in a final at 18 years and 19 days old.

1984/85 United 2 Liverpool 2, Goodison Park, 13.04.85;
United 2 Liverpool 1 (Replay) Maine Road, 17.04.85;

When Paul McGrath’s misjudged header flashes past Gary Bailey for an agonising own-goal in the replay, United are left needing something special after the break – and boy, does Bryan Robson find it. Starting his charge a yard inside Liverpool’s half, he keeps going and going, before thrashing the ball past Bruce Grobbelaar. Mark Hughes’ equally emphatic strike makes it two finals in three seasons.

1989/90 United 3 Oldham Athletic 3, Maine Road, 08.04.90;
United 2 Oldham 1 (Replay), Maine Road, 11.04.90

You have to feel a tad sorry for Oldham, especially when one of their own clambers off the bench – Mark Robins, come on down – to send the Reds to Wembley with an extra-time replay winner following a dramatically drawn first meeting. A few weeks later, Sir Alex Ferguson becomes only the second man to manage a winning side in Cup finals north and south of the border; the silver service starts here…

17/04/2009 11:14 - ManUtd.com, Steve Morgan
Semi success: 1994-2007

Sunday's Wembley summit with Everton is United's 26th FA Cup semi-final tie - a competition record. Here's a reminder of the Reds' victories at this stage from 1994 to 2007...

1993/94 United 1 Oldham Athletic 1, Wembley, 10.04.94;
United 4 Oldham 1 (Replay)
Maine Road, 13.04.94

After Oldham seem set fair for the final thanks to a goal by Neil Pointon, under-par United’s bacon is well and truly saved by Sparky’s late, late extra-time equaliser (46 seconds to go) in the first meeting at Wembley. And in the Maine Road rematch, the Latics are sliced and diced. United’s mojo is well and truly restored in a one-sided display; Messrs Giggs, Irwin, Kanchelskis and Robson all find a way to goal and send Royle’s men home to rue what might have been.

1994/95 United 2 Crystal Palace 2, Villa Park, 09.04.95;
United 2 Crystal Palace 0 (Replay) Villa Park, 12.04.95

A season that promised so much on three fronts, agonisingly fails to deliver at the final hurdle. A replay victory over the Londoners at Villa Park, through unlikely goal heroes Bruce and Pallister, is forgotten when Everton consign United to Wembley woe.

1995/96 United 2 Chelsea 1,
Villa Park, 31.03.96

Aah, you’ll never win anything with kids. No, Mr Hansen, just the double Double. Messrs Cole and Beckham tee United up nicely for Liverpool at Wembley as a stirring, second-half display overturns Chelsea’s half-time lead and sends the Reds to a third consecutive final.

1998/99 United 0 Arsenal 0,
Villa Park, 11.04.99;
United 2 Arsenal 1 (Replay)
Villa Park, 14.04.99

These games must be indelibly etched on our brains: two heavyweights going at it tooth and nail, and then the most dramatic winning goal in FA Cup history. If you don’t know about the miracle of Peter Schmeichel’s penalty save and Ryan Giggs’ goal by now, then you’re either reading the wrong website or you’ve been living in a cave.

2003/04 United 1 Arsenal 0,
Villa Park, 03.04.04

Treble-chasing Gunners are the bookies’ favourites – tut, tut, they should know better after all this time. On an afternoon of many heroes, Paul Scholes crashes home the only goal and United are set up to win the Cup for a record 11th time, one more than the Gunners. Boom boom!

2004/05 United 4 Newcastle 1,
Millennium Stadium, 17.04.05

With awful preparation (defeat at Norwich the previous week) and Roy Keane’s outbursts about commitment, there is only going to be one winner here. The Magpies are no match for the Reds, who are 3-0 up within an hour through a rejuvenated Ruud van Nistelrooy (2) and Paul Scholes. A late fourth from Ronaldo seals the deal.

2006/07 United 4 Watford 1,
Villa Park, 14.04.07

Should you look up the definition of mismatch, don’t be too surprised to find this game under it. United's biggest semi-final win, off the back of the thrashing of Roma, is a Rooney-inspired romp. Given a free role to buzz round the Hornets, Wazza gets two goals for his efforts as a plucky Watford fade from view; Ronaldo and Kieran Richardson bag the others.

Default United History on FA Cup

03/01/2013 10:48 - ManUtd.com, Nick Coppack
Cup wins in London

Dwight Yorke celebrates his first goal at Stamford Bridge in 1999

Manchester United may have lifted the FA Cup nine times at Wembley and once at Crystal Palace, but when it comes to the competitions earlier rounds, Londons not been the happiest of hunting grounds for the Reds.

In fact, barring finals, semi-finals and, in 1970, a third-place playoff* (that initiative was scrapped after just five years), United have won only eight FA Cup ties in the capital in 24 attempts.

Here we take a look at each of the Reds London successes:

Fulham 1 United 2
6 Mar 1926, Sixth Round

Tom Smith and Frank McPherson netted at Craven Cottage to hand the Reds a deserved 2-1 victory and United's first FA Cup win in London in seven matches. But the real story surrounded Fulhams scorer, Albert Pape. The Londoners had bought Pape from United barely five months earlier, but a clause in the strikers contract meant he still lived in the north and trained with the Reds. Incredibly, this FA Cup tie wasnt the first time Pape had travelled to a match with the opposition and then scored against them. United famously signed the Yorkshireman in 1925 just 90 minutes after hed arrived at Manchester Piccadilly with that days opposition, Clapton Orient. Word spread around the city and a bumper crowd showed up at Old Trafford (reports even suggest it swelled by 7,000 between kick-off and half-time) to see him net against his former club.

Millwall 0 United 1
10 Jan 1953, Third Round

Millwall inhabited the Third Division South in 1952/53 so, on paper, shouldnt have posed too many problems for a United side led by Matt Busby and littered with internationals. Whats more, friendly match to open The Dens floodlights. On this occasion, Millwall almost pulled off another upset, turning in a stoic defensive performance. Eventually, though, United broke the deadlock as Jack Rowley netted the winner with just four minutes to play.

Walthamstow Avenue 2 United 5
Fourth round replay,*5 February 1953

Non-league Walthamstow Avenue had garnered a brave 1-1 draw at Old Trafford five days earlier, thanks to a second-half equaliser by thermos flask salesman Jim Lewis. The replay at Highbury attracted 49,119 fans but there was no fairytale ending for the East London side. United stormed into a four-goal lead after 30 minutes before Lewis completed a personal hat-trick of sorts by scoring from the spot just before half-time and then from open play on the hour mark. But the Reds flying start meant Walthamstows task remained too great and Jack Rowley crowned the win on 85 minutes.

Wimbledon 0 United 3
Fifth round,*20 February 1994

This United side was renowned for its attacking flair and at Selhurst Park the Reds, wearing the now iconic green and gold kit,*tore Wimbledon apart. Eric Cantona opened the scoring with a sublime volley, sent crashing into the top corner after hed deftly controlled a clearing header. Paul Ince, Ryan Giggs and Mark Hughes then drew smart saves from goalkeeper Hans Segers before Ince headed home a Giggs corner and Denis Irwin skipped around two defenders and slammed the ball into the far corner. Although the game finished 3-0 it could have been so many more.

Chelsea 3 United 5
Third round,*4 January 1998

Stand up, David Beckham. A brilliant first-half performance by Becks, including a*boo-silencing opener and one of his trademark free-kicks, helped United to a healthy 3-0 lead at the break. Andy Cole also netted a brace one either side of half-time and Teddy Sheringham headed in on 75 minutes to nudge the scoreline towards embarrassing proportions. But with the game won, the Reds lost concentration and conceded three late goals to give the travelling Reds the fright of their lives. Ultimately, though, Chelseas rally was too little, too late.

Chelsea 0 United 2
Sixth round replay, 10 March 1999

Following as entertaining a goalless draw as youre likely to see (both teams missed chances and Paul Scholes and Roberto Di Matteo were given marching orders), United and Chelsea met again at Stamford Bridge three days later. This time the net bulged twice for Dwight Yorke, who netted his 25th and 26th goals of the season. His first came after just four minutes as the striker capitalised on panic in the Blues box. The Reds then soaked up Chelsea pressure, threatening almost exclusively on the counter-attack. The strategy workd and Yorkes second arrived on the hour to set up a semi-final tie against Arsenal that would prove unforgettable.

Fulham 1 United 2
Third round,*7 January 2001

Back in the FA Cup after missing the previous years competition due to Club World Cup commitments, the Reds quest for silverware began with a trip to Craven Cottage to face a Fulham side who would go on to win promotion to the Premier League later that season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opened the scoring after just eight minutes before Fulham, spearheaded by future United striker Louis Saha, equalised through a curling Fabrice Fernandes free-kick. The Cottagers almost hung on to earn a replay, but Teddy Sheringham swept home Luke Chadwicks pass with just a minute remaining to break Fulham hearts and send United into the fourth round.

Fulham 0 United 4
Sixth round,*7 March 2009

Uniteds most recent and, perhaps, most convincing FA Cup win in the capital came towards the end of a 15-game unbeaten run in early 2009. The Reds certainly looked like a team in form as Carlos Tevez netted twice one a brilliant strike from 25 yards in the first half. Wayne Rooney added a third with an equally stunning long-ranger shortly after the break before Ji-sung Park sealed victory nine minutes from time. After such an assured performance, however, the Reds misfired at Wembley in the semi-final against Everton and went out on penalties following a 0-0 draw.

Inspired by history...
Royals looking for 1927 Cup repeat

Monday 17th January 1927. A day the Royals can take historic encouragement from ahead of our fifth round clash with Manchester United on Monday night.

That day, 86 years ago, was the last time - and the only time - the Royals have triumphed over the Mancunians in all competitions. Before Reading were first promoted the Premier League in 2006, they had faced Manchester United ten times in the FA Cup - but only once came out on top. In 1912, the Biscuitmen forced United to a replay after a 1-1 draw at Elm Park - but were beaten 3-0 in reply at a very infant Old Trafford ground.

However, 1927 was to be the Royals' year. Angus Wylie's Reading made their first steps in the FA Cup by surviving a thrilling 4-4 draw at Weymouth - only to return to Elm Park and flatteringly win 5-0. In the second round, the Biscuitmen were off to the coast again - this time to face Southend. Braithwaite's brace and Frank Richardson's strike were enough to secure a 3-2 victory and place Reading's name safely into the hat.

Manchester United and Reading's names were drawn together in the draw for the third round - creating an unprecedented buzz around the Berkshire town. The Royals were further buoyed by their impressive league form. Despite a hiccup in the shape of a 5-1 defeat Clapton Orient, the team were flying high after winning three on the trot.

A record crowd and gate receipts ensued for the game - with 28,918 fans paying 1,862 to watch one of the most dramatic games ever seen at Elm Park. The Royals dominated the game - but were quashed by United's underhand tactics and a number of controversial refereeing decisions. Nevertheless, nine-man Reading held out for a replay - less than Wylie's men actually deserved.

Reading were again the much better football side in the return fixture at Old Trafford - and twice took the lead, again via Richardson, only to be pegged back by the home side. Extra time couldn't find a winner, so the tie went to a third game - at Villa Park.

2,824 Royals fans made the journey to Birmingham in two special trains and were not disappointed. Despite going a goal behind, Reading adapted better to the greasy conditions in the midlands and once again rose above the Red Devils' unsportsmanlike and violent behaviour - as Richardson calmly slotted home from the spot top equalise. Having squandered three winning positions over the tie, the Biscuitmen learned their lesson as Johnstone headed home the all-important winner with just 40 seconds on the clock.

The side returned to Reading at 9pm night to be greeted by a huge crowd who gave them an outstanding and well deserved ovation. Richardson inspired the Royals to their furthest run in the FA Cup - as Reading saw off Portsmouth and Brentford on their way to a semi-final defeat to Cardiff. But the hard-fought and eventual victory over top-flight Man United will live long in the memory - and will provide the romantic-type of Royals supporters of an extra slice of hope.

What's more; fast-forward 80 years to Saturday 17th February 2007. In an FA Cup firth round tie (the same stage we're out now), a heroic second half header from Bynjar Gunnarsson cancelled out Michael Carrick's opener at Old Trafford to earn a replay.

A repetition of those feats, in either fashion, would be a welcome result for Brian McDermott's men on Monday night as the Royals aim to create more history.
