Default Re: [2015/16] UEFA Europa League matches

They beat Southampton, have a Manchester United fan in midfield and were only formed in 1999... all you need to know about minnows Midtjylland as they prepare to face Louis van Gaal's side

* Manchester United draw Midtjylland in Europa League Last 32
* The Danish champions beat Southampton in qualifying rounds
* Owner Matt Benham also runs Championship club Brentford
* Revolutionary approach to running club using algorithms and statistics
* Play at Arena Herning with a capacity of almost 12,000 spectators

Midtjylland are the Danish minnows who dumped Southampton out of the Europa League qualification rounds and now have Manchester United in their sights.

The club were formed between the merger of Ikast FS and Herning Fremad in 1999, the same year United won the treble.

United are surely dead certs to beat a club from the tiny town of Herning?

Danish side Midtjylland were drawn to face Manchester United in the Last 32 of the Europa League

With owner Matthew Benham making a fortune out of beating the bookies and taking a unique approach to running the club, maybe don’t bet against them just yet.

Sportsmail takes a closer look at who Louis Van Gaal’s side will come up against…

Where have I heard of Matthew Benham?

He also owns Championship side Brentford, where they are taking a similar approach to running the club, but not quite as extreme as at Midtjylland’s.

It’s all about algorithms and statistical analysis.

How are such a small club progressing in the Europa League?

Manchester United travel to Denmark on February 18 before hosting the return leg on February 25

They are taking a completely revolutionary approach to how a football club should be run.

Chairman Rasmus Ankersen is only in his early 30s and started his role by asking Benham what a football club would look like without human eyes and ears.

Sounds barmy, but they won the title last year on a far smaller budget than others and it is faring them well this campaign.

Ankersen is possibly the only professional football club chairman with a man bun.

Are they any good?

Their passage through Group D marks the furthest they've gone in Europe since formation in 1999

They are the current Danish SuperLiga champions, but are third in the table at the moment and four points off Copenhagen in first.

In the Europa League as well as knocking Southampton out over two legs, they came second in a group with Napoli, who topped it, Club Brugge and Legia Warsaw.

Who’s the manager?

Manager Jess Thorup is relatively unknown in England and left as Denmark’s Under 21 head coach to join club

Jess Thorup is relatively unknown in England.

The 45-year-old, previously manager of fellow Danish SuperLiga side Esbjerg fB, left his role as Denmark’s Under 21 head coach to take charge at Midtjylland this year. He was a forward of modest success in the Danish leagues.

Former manager Glen Riddersholm resigned in the summer, despite leading them to their first championship, citing issues with not being able to run the club the way he wanted to.

Best player?

No-one has been outstanding this season.

Their league top scorers are Morten Rasmussen and Mikel Duelund, who have four goals each. Forward Rasmumssen scored the goal which sent Southampton out and has a decent goals-to-games ratio for them.

Morten Rasmussen is their top scorer in the league and struck the winning goal against Southampton

He is nicknamed ‘Duncan’ due to his vague resemblance to former Everton striker Duncan Ferguson, although he isn’t a particular fan of the Scot. In truth, he looks absolutely nothing like him.

What will United face in the away leg?

Midtjylland won the 2014-15 Danish Superliga, their first league triumph after twice finishing runners-up

The away support allocation will be minimal.

Under UEFA rules the home side must only provide five per cent of their stadium for visitors. This will amount to roughly 600 tickets for United in their tiny MCH Arena.

Southampton were given 554 tickets when they travelled there. Herning, where they play, is a small town with a population of less than 50,000.

In the town there are only a few bars and restaurants. The weather will be freezing. In February, the average temperature is two to three degrees in the day time, dropping below freezing in the evening.

Manchester United forced to slash ticket prices for Europa League clash with Danish minnows Midtjylland

* Manchester United draw Midtjylland in Europa League Last 32

* Owner Matt Benham also runs Championship club Brentford
* Revolutionary approach to running club using algorithms and statistics

Manchester United's fall from grace in Europe was put into sharper focus on Monday when they were drawn against minnows Midtjylland in the Europa League and immediately slashed ticket prices for the second leg at Old Trafford in February.

Louis van Gaal’s side crashed out of the Champions League following last week’s defeat in Wolfsburg, which consigned them to the last 32 of Europe’s less glamorous competition.

United place the Europa League in the same category as the Capital One Cup, meaning there is a 25 per cent discount on ticket prices and season-ticket holders will not face sanctions if they choose not to purchase them.

Danish side Midtjylland were drawn to face Manchester United in the Last 32 of the Europa League

Midtjylland were only formed in 1999 — the year United won the Champions League to complete a historic Treble — and are competing in Europe for the first time.

The Danish champions were knocked out of the Champions League by Cypriot side APOEL in the third qualifying round, but made the Europa League group stage by winning a play-off against Southampton.

Midtjylland are backed by Brentford owner Matthew Benham and have a similar policy of mathematical modelling to achieve their success

Their passage through Group D marks the furthest they've gone in Europe since formation in 1999

United will be given just 600 tickets for the first leg at the 11,000-capacity MCH Stadium and Midtjylland chairman Rasmus Ankersen warned: ‘We have already beaten one English team so we are not afraid. We are a small club with a small budget and we know we can’t outspend them, so we have to out-think them. So far, this way has worked for us in the Europa League.

‘We know we have a chance and we will take up the challenge. If we can beat Southampton we can beat Manchester United and the players will believe it.’

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp faces a return to Germany after his team were drawn against Augsburg.

‘The anticipation of facing Liverpool is huge,’ said Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl. ‘Liverpool are a cult and Jurgen is a huge name in Germany so I’m happy for the whole club.’
