Luke Shaw is facing huge battle to win back his place from Brandon Williams at Manchester United as 19-year-old academy starlet becomes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first choice ahead of injury-prone £31m man

* Brandon Williams has emerged as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first choice left back
* It has left Luke Shaw facing a huge challenge to win back his place in the side
* Shaw has struggled with injuries and has seen 19-year-old Williams impress
* Williams was left at home for the trip to Astana while Shaw is set to get minutes

Luke Shaw faces a battle to win back a first-team place at Manchester United after being told he has fallen behind teenage star Brandon Williams in the pecking order.

Williams has staked his claim to be United's first-choice left back in the absence of Shaw who has not played since August due to a hamstring injury.

While the 19-year-old has stayed at home to prepare for Sunday's Premier League clash with Aston Villa, Shaw has made the 6,000-mile round trip to Kazakhstan to play Astana in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Luke Shaw has been told he faces a serious challenge to win his first-team spot back. Academy starlet Brandon Williams (right) is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first-choice left back

Williams has made such good progress that it's understood he has jumped ahead of Shaw in manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans and the United boss is no longer planning to sign cover at left back over the next two transfer windows.

The teenager has made eight appearances this season since being handed his senior debut off the bench in the Carabao Cup against Rochdale in September, and scored his first goal to spark United's comeback at Sheffield United on Sunday.

Shaw, on the other hand, has had a stop-start career at Old Trafford since United paid Southampton £31million in 2014 to make him the most expensive teenager in world football.

Solskjaer still has a future for Shaw at the club but has urged him to fight for his spot. Williams has been impressive so far this season and scored his first goal at Sheffield United

He suffered a horrific double fracture of his right leg in a Champions League game against PSV Eindhoven in September 2015, and was then frozen out for long periods by former United manager Jose Mourinho.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a renaissance under Solskjaer and was voted United's Player of the Year last season, but has not played since limping out of the defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on August 24.

While Shaw is still very much in Solskjaer's plans, he has been told that Williams has earned the right to be first-choice and must try to win back his place.

United will now focus on adding to their midfield and attack, although most of the transfer business will be done next summer unless a target becomes available in January.

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw buys 50 Harrods hampers worth over £250 each for staff at club's Carrington training ground

* Luke Shaw has bought hampers for staff at Manchester United's training ground

* Defender has taken it upon himself to treat United's support staff in recent years

Manchester United full back Luke Shaw spread a little festive cheer at the club's Carrington training complex on Monday by buying staff a Harrod's hamper each.

The 24-year-old ordered around 50 of the gift baskets worth over £250 each, filled with luxury items from the famous Knightsbridge store.

Shaw has taken it upon himself in recent years to treat the support staff at United in a show of appreciation for the work done behind scenes.

Luke Shaw has spent over £12,500 on Harrods hampers for Manchester United staff. Shaw showed his generosity by buying hampers for staff at the club's training ground

He bought around 30 hampers from Harrods last year and the year before from Fortnum and Mason but, with increasing staff numbers, showed his generosity once again by splashing out over £12,500 on the Christmas gifts this time around.

One staff insider said: 'Fair play, it's really good of him. He's done it a few years now and it's certainly gone down very well with everyone. It's a nice touch, he doesn't have to do it and, looking at the hampers, they won't come cheap.'

Shaw, who signed a new contract last year understood to be worth around £165,000 a week, has recently returned to United's first team after injury and is expected to figure in the EFL Cup quarter-final against Colchester United on Wednesday.

'He's potentially one of the best left-backs in England': Luke Shaw backed to shine for Manchester United by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after Ashley Young's departure to Inter Milan

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has praised Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw
* Shaw is set to benefit from Ashley Young's permanent switch to Inter Milan
* Despite having struggled for form and fitness, Shaw could now play a key part

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has backed Luke Shaw to step up following Ashley Young's departure to Inter Milan.

With Young no longer at the club, Shaw has an opportunity to re-establish himself as United's first-choice left-back, and Solskjaer hailed the 24-year-old as one of the best players in his position in the Premier League.

Solskjaer told Manchester United's official website: 'When this situation came up, and the options we've got at full-back - you've got Brandon Williams who has really come through and developed. Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been fantastic.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hailed Manchester United's Luke Shaw as one of England's top left-backs. Ashley Young's departure to Inter Milan could see Shaw receive more regular playing time

'Luke Shaw is potentially one of the best left-backs in England, for me. Then we've got Diogo Dalot and Tim Fosu-Mensah, they're both fit. You've got loads of full-backs.'

Solskjaer was full of praise for Young, who also often featured at right-back for United.

He said: 'Ashley's mindset was that he wanted to try a new adventure and he's approaching 35 now. He's done a fantastic job and he's served this club fantastically.

'I think it was an opportunity for him that we had to say yes to. We got a transfer fee for someone who's been so loyal to the club. Good luck.

'That's what Manchester United do, you have players for a long time and then they move on and someone else steps in.'

As Solskjaer alludes to, there will still be competition for the left-back berth at United, with 19-year-old Brandon Williams having produced some encouraging performances this season.

Shaw has often struggled for form and fitness during his United career, but he will hope that he can get back to being a very important player for the club.

The ultimate aim for Shaw will be to re-establish himself in the England setup, but he hasn't featured for Gareth Southgate's side since 2018, with Ben Chilwell and Danny Rose both ahead of him in the pecking order.

Default Re: Luke Shaw

SHAW DISAPPOINTED TO NOT CLOSE GAP

Luke Shaw was left ruing missed opportunities after Manchester United's goalless draw with Wolves in the Premier League.

The point means Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side remain six points behind Chelsea in the fight for the top four, with Sheffield United moving above us into fifth thanks to their 1-0 win at Crystal Palace.

United now embark on a 16-day hiatus between fixtures, and Shaw was disappointed not to have gone into the winter break on a higher note.

“To be honest I’m really, really disappointed especially with the way the games have been going recently,” the 24-year-old told MUTV.

“We haven’t been picking up too many points and today was massive for us with Chelsea dropping points.

“It seems to keep happening with teams around us dropping points and we don’t end up closing the gap and we are suffering from that. We needed to win.”

United's next game in the Premier League is a crunch clash against Frank Lampard's side at Stamford Bridge on 17 February.

With the Reds set to jet off to sunnier climes next week, Shaw admits he'll have that one in the back of his mind.

“With the break now we haven’t got a game so soon and that is quite annoying but we will have a little break and look forward to the big game when we get back,” he added.

“Maybe it is nice to have a break but on the other hand with how the game went today I would rather have a game around the corner so we can put things right because we need to.

“But that is not the case and we have this break and we will regroup and focus because it is not the end of the season yet.

“Chelsea is a massive game and one we seem to love playing in. We have played them a lot in the cups.

“We will have a few days off and then train very hard to get ready for that game because we know it is going to be tough. We want to close the gap and we need to beat them.”

United prevented our opponents from scoring for the seventh time in 11 games in all competitions, with David De Gea keeping his 105th Premier League clean sheet, in his 300th outing in the competition.

Shaw said that it was nice to record the shutout, but admitted he'd swap it for goals at the other end.

“We speak about clean sheets a lot and maybe sometimes we concede from sloppy goals, maybe from set pieces most of all and we have worked on that,” Luke said.

“But I probably would have rather have conceded and won 2-1 but that is not the case. It is nice to be keeping clean sheets but we need to score goals.”

'Everyone's having a go at us... but Arsenal are even worse!': Fired-up Luke Shaw SLAMS how Manchester United's struggles are focused on ahead of old rivals Arsenal

* Manchester United return to action against Chelsea after their winter break
* The Old Trafford club are six points adrift in race for Champions League spot
* Luke Shaw insists they can make up ground and claims Arsenal are worse

As praise is heaped on Manchester United's latest discovery, Brandon Williams, it should be remembered his rival Luke Shaw had played in a World Cup and become the fourth most-expensive defender in the world by the time he was 20.

Indeed, Shaw is still only 24 and, refreshed by a team-bonding camp in Marbella, has plenty of fight left having overcome a career-threatening broken leg under Louis van Gaal and harsh public criticism from Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho once boasted of guiding Shaw through a match against Everton, proclaiming the defender's performance was 'his body with my brain'. You can't imagine Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being so disrespectful.

Luke Shaw insisted Manchester United are ready to finish the Premier League season strongly. The club's poor form this season has led to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's position being questioned

Shaw likes his manager's philosophy of protecting players and believes they now owe him a few results, starting at Chelsea with United six points adrift in the race for a Champions League spot.

'Ole is different to other managers I've played for who have not been slow in criticising us,' acknowledges Shaw, who rejected a move to Stamford Bridge to join United in 2014.

'Every manager has their own way of doing things. Jose had his methods and you have to accept they believe it's the best way to be successful.

'But we're all aware how this manager has tried to take the criticism on himself this season. We admire him for that but understand there comes a time when players have to look at themselves and realise it's all on us.

'The manager can't keep defending us. We're the ones who need to shoulder the blame and start performing on the pitch. This is Manchester United. You know why you're here.'

Solskjaer fears for his job if United fail to win a trophy or qualify for the Champions League, with names like Mauricio Pochettino and Gareth Southgate mentioned as prospective replacements.

United's rebuild post-Sir Alex Ferguson has not been smooth, although summer signings Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have strengthened their defence and £46million Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes looked decent on debut before the winter break.

Their only league win of 2020 so far came against bottom club Norwich at Old Trafford and their deadline day signing of former Watford striker Odion Ighalo from the Chinese League was widely mocked.

Shaw considers the wave of negativity as over the top but predictable, given United's size.

'We know you need a thick skin to play football, especially so for the biggest club in the world,' he admits.

'Everyone is watching, everyone wants to have a go when you lose. It's part and parcel of playing for United.

'No disrespect to Arsenal because I think they are a fantastic club but they're not having the greatest season and it hardly gets mentioned.

'I find it funny that if it's United, everyone criticises.

'We know when we haven't been good enough.

'We're here to take this club back to where it belongs — winning trophies and challenging for titles.

'There are a lot of good days to come.'

Whereas most Premier League clubs allowed their players individual time off during the winter break, Solskjaer flew his squad to southern Spain to spend time together, which included training, meals out, paintballing and candid discussions about improving form.

'We are a really close bunch. Ole has brought that in a lot more. We worked hard on the trip and it was a great chance to get to know Bruno, not just as a player. There are a lot of good friendships in the squad,' says Shaw.

'Minds and bodies are refreshed and we are ready for Stamford Bridge. What's brought us even closer is a determination to improve because we have been sloppy at times.'

Shaw is positive about the challenge of fighting for his place against the emerging Williams. 'The competition is good for the club,' he says.

And he hopes there is time to catch the eye of England manager Gareth Southgate before Euro 2020. 'I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking about the Euros,' he said.

SHAW UNDERLINES GOALSCORERS' QUALITIES

Manchester United’s three goal amigos against Watford have got Luke Shaw buzzing.

Bruno Fernandes broke the Hornets' resistance in the 3-0 win with a penalty just before half-time and breathtaking Goal-of-the-Month contenders from Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood sealed the three points.

Shaw has pats on the back for the threesome who helped lift the Reds into fifth spot in the league and just three short of Chelsea in the top four.

“Bruno has had a massive impact. He has only been here such a short time but it feels like he has been here for a while,” Luke told MUTV.

“You can tell he was a leader at Sporting Lisbon and I think he wants to bring those sort of leadership skills here and help the team as much as he can, off the pitch as much as on the pitch, as he is doing now.

“Hopefully, he can keep that up. He is already shining for us and it is great to see.”

Fernandes impudently opened his United goal account from the spot and then Martial, equally audaciously, grabbed his 15th of the season with a daring finish.

“The quality Anthony has got is unbelievable. If he keeps working hard and keeps believing in himself, he can be one of the best,” said Shaw.

“He has got that ability to be able to do special things that not many can, but he is definitely one that can do it. I’m happy for him, hopefully he can keep scoring goals because we need them.”

The Old Trafford win was crowned with a sensational run and hit by Greenwood who made it 11 goals for the campaign.

“The confidence Mason has at such a young age is what you need to thrive here,” said our full-back.

“I don’t think he is arrogant one bit but he has that confidence at the right sort of level. He just wants to play football and he is not bothered about what is around him.

“He is not bothered about any pressure at all, he is just enjoying his football. All the lads are happy he can contribute with a goal and it is great for him. He was brilliant.”

Shaw himself has been in confident mood and thriving either as a traditional left-back and left centre-half when manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has employed a back three.

“Whenever you are on the pitch, you have to enjoy it as much as possible. I have been playing in a different position which I am enjoying,” Luke said.

“It is great to be playing and you always have to have a smile on your face.

“It is nice for the manager to be able to play me in two different positions. It is also great for the manager that he has Brandon Williams. He has been doing amazing when he’s played and he is a wonderful talent.

“The manager could play me and him at the same time, which I have enjoyed doing. Whenever and wherever the manager wants me to play, I will play for him and the team.“

Luke Shaw insists Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has brought the smiles back at Manchester United after criticism from former boss Jose Mourinho

* The Red Devils take on Club Brugges in the Europa League last-32 on Thursday
* Ole Gunnar Solksjaer's side drew the first leg 1-1 away in Belgium
* Luke Shaw admits he is enjoying his football underneath the Norwegian
* The defender is undergoing a spell at centre-back in a new-look United side

Luke Shaw believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has put a smile back on his face after a difficult time at Manchester United under the Norwegian's predecessor Jose Mourinho.

The former United manager was not afraid to criticise Shaw in public during his two-and-a-half-year reign at Old Trafford, but Solskjaer has brought a far more friendly approach to the club.

Shaw is now playing some of his best football since joining United from Southampton in the summer of 2014, either in his usual left-back role or on the left-hand side of a back-three.

Luke Shaw says Manchester United players are enjoying playing under Ole Gunnar Solksjaer

'He (Solskjaer) has been unbelievable and has brought a smile on our faces,' said Shaw.

'Of course, you see with him, he has been brilliant and the lads are really enjoying it – more so now we are getting better results.

'We have got an important second half of the season, Ole has been great and we enjoy working under him.'

Shaw has endured more criticism than most players at United but accepts that it goes with the territory after becoming the world's most expensive teenager at £30million when he moved to United five-and-a-half years ago.

Shaw and his teammates have come under criticism in recent months for poor performances. Solskjaer and Shaw have improved their recent results with the latter in a new centre-back role

He added: 'I've had a lot of stick and if you come to Manchester United you need to take that. People are always ready to criticise you.

'There's only high standards here, so we need to be strong, but we need to be on that pitch when it matters and give it everything we've got.

'It is completely different to other clubs. When you sign that piece of paper you know how different it is going to be.

'You have to be able to deal with it. If you are not strong mentally and confident you will struggle to deal with it.'

Shaw is set to play against Club Brugges on Thursday night hoping to take another step towards the Europa League final having missed United's victory in this competition three years ago – as well as their appearances in the FA Cup and League Cup finals during his Old Trafford career.

'It's a massive ambition for me,' he said. 'I was there for the Europa League final, and the feeling – even though I wasn't on the pitch – was a feeling I have not felt and I wanted more of.

'I wasn't involved and that is what is pushing me on even more to get into this final, and others. We should be in finals and we should be in all competitions until the end. We are very confident at the moment.'

'I felt like we wanted it more': Luke Shaw aims dig at rivals Manchester City after United triumphed in derby

* Manchester United beat their rivals City 2-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday evening
* Luke Shaw believes his United side 'wanted it more' than their rivals on the day
* Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay both scored in a convincing victory
* City sit second in the table with no chance of catching league leaders Liverpool

Luke Shaw has claimed that Manchester United ‘wanted it more’ than Manchester City after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side celebrated victory in the Old Trafford derby.

United’s third win over their neighbours this season was also their most deserved as goals from Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay sealed a 2-0 victory and kept up the chase for a top-four finish.

Shaw sensed out on the pitch that he and his teammates had a greater desire to win than a City side sat comfortably in second place in the table with no chance of catching runaway leaders Liverpool.

‘I think it was so important, not just the points but the magnitude of the game and how big it is to everyone in this city,’ said Shaw. ‘I think if you look at it, maybe we wanted it more. I felt like we wanted it more. I’m very happy and proud of the way the team played.

‘The fans were amazing today and it helps us even more when they’re like that. The last few years they've had very disappointing results against Man City at home. Away we've been good, but at home we've struggled.

‘You just smile when you come off the pitch, the way they're singing makes us all very happy. We're glad that we can get them singing like that with an amazing result like this.’

Luke Shaw has claimed that Manchester United ‘wanted it more’ than Manchester City

Martial volleyed United in front in the first half but they were hanging onto the one-goal lead when McTominay pounced on another error by City keeper Ederson to score the second from long range late on.

Shaw admitted that he wanted his teammate to take the ball into the corner and waste time instead of shooting at an empty net after latching onto Ederson’s stray throw.

‘To be fair, in my head I was like: “Why is he shooting? Run it in the corner!”,’ added Shaw. ‘I think it topped off such an amazing game and a result I think we deserved.’

United are now unbeaten in 10 games – including seven wins and eight clean sheets – which is their best run since Solskjaer came in as caretaker boss and went undefeated for 11 games.

That sequence began to fall apart at the same stage of the season in March as United won just two of their final 12 games after Solskjaer was appointed on a permanent basis, but Shaw thinks they are better equipped to carry on winning this time.

‘I think back then emotions got over us too much we didn't maintain that,’ he said. ‘I think this time we're in different position.

‘We're probably more experienced now because it was very disappointing the way we dropped off and that's not Man United. We need to keep the standards high.

‘I'm sure the boss and the coaches around us will keep pushing, but also us as players we need to push each other every day to get to where we want to be. I have no doubt that we can finish off the season really strong.

‘We can't stop here, we can't be happy with just this. We need to keep going and push on. We need to keep the standards high. We've got another massive game on Thursday (against Austrian side LASK in the Europa League).

‘We're still in two cup competitions and the top-four is still very much alive. We've got to keep putting the pressure on and try not to focus too much on other teams.

‘We're shutting up shop and keeping clean sheets, which is a very good positive, so we need to keep going.’

Jasa Ibrahimovic dan Pogba pada Luke Shaw
Okdwitya Karina Sari - detikSport

Luke Shaw Cerita Bagaimana Manchester United Dilatih Solskjaer
Afif Farhan - detikSport

Manchester - Luke Shaw, bek kiri Manchester United bercerita bagaimana rasanya dilatih Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Menurut Luke Shaw, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer langsung membenahi beberapa persoalan.
