UEFA confirm launch of European Conference League in 2021 to sit beneath Champions League and Europa League

* The European Conference League will be contested from 2021 onwards
* The competition will run alongside the Champions League and Europa League
* UEFA's aim is to give more clubs the opportunity to play European football

UEFA has revealed the launch of a third European competition called the European Conference League.

The new tournament will sit beneath and be played alongside the Champions League and Europa League from 2021.

UEFA's idea is to give more clubs the opportunity to play European football, though it isn't yet known how exactly teams will qualify for the tournament.

UEFA has announced the launch of a third European club competition from 2021. The winners of the League Cup could qualify for the European Conference League

At least one English club is expected to participate in the play-offs for the competition each season.

The winners of the League Cup could be one potential route for qualification for clubs.

As it stands, the top four clubs in the Premier League qualify for the Champions League, with the team in fifth handed a place in the Europa League group stage.

The winners of the FA Cup also qualify for the Europa League group stage, while the League Cup holders are rewarded with a place in the second qualifying round.

Cristiano Ronaldo rakes in DOUBLE the money rival Lionel Messi earns on Instagram as it is revealed the Portugal and Juventus forward collected £38m from the platform last year alone

* Cristiano Ronaldo is Instagram's highest earner with £38m in the last 12 months
* Lionel Messi took in just over £18m, while David Beckham scooped just £8.6m
* Ronaldo and Messi have rivaled each other for sponsorships and the Ballon D'or

They have been vying for the honour of best footballer on the planet for over a decade, but Cristiano Ronaldo finally has the edge over Lionel Messi - at least when it comes to Instagram earnings.

The Juventus superstar raked in £38.2million on Instagram last year alone, double that of Barcelona talisman Messi and making him the biggest earner on the platform.

Messi could only muster £18.7m from his posts, and even the influential David Beckham still trails the Portuguese ace with just £8.6m.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been revealed to be the highest earning star on Instagram with £38m

While the former Real Madrid star is entering his twilight years at 34, it seems he is still able to make an impact both on and off the pitch.

A study by Buzz Bingo looked at the number posts by stars on Instagram and their subsequent earnings, with Ronaldo trumping social media icons such as Kendall Jenner and Selena Gomez.

Ronaldo made 34 sponsored Instagram posts over the last 12 months, earning £780,000 for each one - landing him a huge £38.2m sum.

Lionel Messi posted 36 times on Instagram last year, making £518,000 for each one sent out

David Beckham is a hugely popular figure on social media but is fourth on the earners list

Argentina captain Messi sent out more with 36, but made £518,000 for every post, while ex-England skipper David Beckham's posts only netted him £286,000 each.

Ronaldo and Messi headed up the list of top earners on Instagram, with Beckham in fourth place behind Kendall Jenner.

Other footballers to make the list were Neymar Jr, who earned £5.8m over the last year, working out at £578,000 per post, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who raked in £3.2m and £160,000 per post.

Ronaldo and Messi have maintained a competitive rivalry on the pitch ever since emerging as the top talents in football and both have five Ballon D'or wins apiece.

Barcelona beat Real Madrid and Man United to top list of the most tweeted about sports teams in 2019... and the Los Angeles Lakers are the ONLY non-football side to make it into the top 10

* Twitter has revealed the top 10 most tweeted about sports teams of the year
* Number of unique users using club's name, handle or keywords were analysed
* Barcelona finished top of the pile, ahead of Real Madrid and Manchester United
* Liverpool and Ajax both made it, while NBA outfit LA Lakers snuck into the top 10

Barcelona and Real Madrid might be battling it out at the top of La Liga, but the Catalan giants have already secured a victory over their rivals on social media.

Twitter has revealed that the Spanish champions have been the most tweeted about sports team in the world during 2019, ahead of Los Blancos in second.

Barca also pipped Manchester United, who finished third, and Liverpool, who finished fourth, to top spot in their annual rundown of the sides who have provoked more discussion than any other.

Lionel Messi and his Barcelona team-mates were the most tweeted about sports club in 2019

Data from Twitter has revealed the top 10 most discussed teams, with nine of them in football

Using the number of unique users who tweeted about the club using their name, handle or related keywords between January 1 and November 15, Twitter were able to determine which sides sparked the most conversation.

Unsurprisingly, football teams dominate the top 10, with the first nine spots filled by those who play the beautiful game.

Behind Liverpool in fifth place were Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, while Serie A giants Juventus finished sixth.

Despite winning the Premier League, Manchester City only got enough people talking to make it into seventh place, one spot ahead of Ajax, who shocked the world with their stunning run to the Champions League semi-finals last season.

Brazilian side Flamengo are a surprise inclusion in ninth spot, given their dramatic Copa Libertadores final win came eight days after cut-off point for data.

The only non-football team to make it into the top 10 are NBA side the Los Angeles Lakers, who benefit from having arguably basketball's biggest name, LeBron James, on their books.

Manchester United still reign supreme over English clubs with £627m earnings and are bettered only by Real Madrid and Barcelona... but rivals City and Liverpool are set to overtake them

* The latest 2020 Deloitte Football Money League table has now been released
* Manchester United still reign supreme when it comes to the English teams
* Troubling signs show both Man City and Liverpool could eclipse the Red Devils
* Barcelona come in as the world's richest team in terms of revenue generated

Manchester United remain the top-ranked English club in terms of revenue generated but their 23-year dominance of Deloitte's Football Money League could come under threat from Manchester City or Liverpool in next year's table.

United's earnings of £627.1million for 2018-19 puts them third overall in the table, behind Spanish giants Barcelona (£741.1m) and Real Madrid (£667.5m).

Their closest Premier League rivals are City and Liverpool in sixth and seventh respectively, with the Pep Guardiola's side just £88.9m behind.

Manchester United remain the top-ranked English club in Deloitte's Football Money League. But the Red Devils are fast losing ground and risk being caught by rivals Manchester City

United, who have been the highest-ranked English club since Deloitte first compiled the Money League survey based on the 1996-97 financial results, are forecasting reduced revenues of between £560-580m for 2019-20. The club face the prospect of a second consecutive season without Champions League broadcast revenue.

Dan Jones, partner in the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, believes a changing of the guard is possible.

'United have been the top English club since we started the Money League but that could come under a bit of pressure when we do it in 2021,' he told the PA news agency.

'That will cover this season when Liverpool are having an tremendous season on the pitch, so we think there's a possibility of United losing that number one position.

Quote:
2020 Deloitte Football Money League table in full

1. Barcelona - €840.8m (£741.1m)

2. Real Madrid - €757.3m (£667.5m)

3. Manchester United - €711.5m (£627.1m)

4. Bayern Munich - €660.1m (£581.8m)

5. Paris Saint Germain - €635.9m (£560.5m)

6. Manchester City - €610.6m (£538.2m)

7. Liverpool - €604.7m (£533m)

8. Tottenham - €521.1m (£459.3m)

9. Chelsea - €513.1m (£452.2m)

10. Juventus - €459.7m (£405.2m)

11. Arsenal - €445.6m (£392.7m)

12. Borussia Dortmund - €377.1m (£332.4m)

13. Atletico Madrid - (€367.6m (£324.0m)

14. Inter Milan (€364.6m (£321.3m)

15. Schalke (€324.8m (£286.3m)

16. Roma (€231.0m (£203.6m)

17. Lyon (€220.8m (£194.6m)

18. West Ham - €216.4m (£190.7m)

19. Everton - €213.0m (£187.7m)

20. Napoli - €207.4m (£182.8m)

Barcelona are now the world's richest club in terms of revenue generated, with £741.1m

Recent Spanish Super Cup winners Real Madrid sit in second place with a value of £667.5m

'Part of that will ride on how the rest of this season goes, if City or Liverpool go deep into the Champions League.

'It is definitely a possibility that United will lose that place. Depending on where they are in that range of projected revenue (£560-580m), and if City and Liverpool do well in the Champions League, it could be very, very close.

'If you think about where we were 10 years ago, the idea that City would overhaul United in financial terms would have seemed far-fetched.'

Deloitte recorded United's revenue in 2008-09 as £278.5m, with City almost £200m behind them on £87m. At that point United were almost £100m ahead of Liverpool as well.

In all there are eight Premier League clubs in the Money League top 20, more than any other country, and all the clubs hail from Europe's big five leagues of England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

Tottenham have achieved their highest-ever position in the table of eighth with revenue of £459.3m, and are the top-ranked London club for the first time since the very first Money League.

Their north London rivals Arsenal suffered from a second consecutive season without Champions League football, falling from ninth to 11th.

Chelsea, who announced an after-tax loss of £96m for 2018-19 on New Year's Eve, are ninth in the table, while the other Premier League representatives are West Ham and Everton in 18th and 19th respectively.

Combined revenues among the top 20 have grown by 11 per cent compared to last year to a record of 9.3 billion euros (just under £7.9billion).

Barcelona are way out in front, in financial terms. They lead bitter rivals Real by £73.6m, a record gap between first and second in the history of the Deloitte study.

Deloitte said a 'primary factor' behind the Catalan club's earning power was their decision to bring merchandising and licensing activities in-house.

Jones added: 'Barca are a clear example of a club adapting to changing market conditions, reducing the reliance on broadcast revenue and focusing on growing revenues within its control.

'The club's commercial operation generated 383.5m euros (£326.6m) of revenue, which is more than the total revenue of the 12th-placed club in this year's Money League.

'With the club expecting further growth of 30m euros (£25.5m) in commercial revenues and total revenue of almost 880m euros (£749.5m) in 2019-20, we expect them to retain the top spot in next year's edition.'

Iker Casillas retires from football - nine months after he suffered a heart attack in training - as Real Madrid legend bids to become president of the Spanish FA

* Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa revealed Iker Casillas spoke to him
* The goalkeeper announced that he will run to become president of Spanish FA
* Casillas suffered a heart attack in training last year and he has not played since

Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa has confirmed Iker Casillas' retirement.

The 38-year-old goalkeeper announced that he will run to become the next president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Monday.

Porto president Pinto da Costa revealed that Casillas spoke to him regarding his plans to hang up his gloves.

'I was very happy. Casillas had an attitude that touched me a lot, because before announcing the candidacy he made a point of coming to Porto to have lunch with me to communicate that he would make that decision and end his career,' he said.

'He has a great career, in which he has only been in two clubs and we know he has both at heart.'

Casillas has been the liaison between the first-team squad and the board of directors at Porto after suffering a heart attack in training in May last year, since which he has not played.

Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa has confirmed Iker Casillas' retirement. The goalkeeper announced he will run to become president of the Spanish Football Federation

Posting on Twitter earlier this week, the World Cup winner confirmed he would contest the presidency against Luis Rubiales by saying: 'Yes, I will stand for presidency of the Spanish FA when elections are called. Together we will put our federation at the top alongside the best football in the world: Spanish football.

'I've informed the president of my club FC Porto of the decision and I want to express my deepest gratitude.

'We're working on our candidacy with the highest respect. More than 23,000 voters await us in fair and transparent elections as 139 assembly members will make the key decision.

'Thanks for all the support and good wishes. Let's go for it!'
