REDS LEARN 2018 WORLD CUP OPPONENTS

We now know who the Manchester United stars with a chance of representing their countries at the 2018 World Cup finals will be facing in the group stages.

The draw, which split the 32 nations involved into eight groups, each consisting of four teams, was made by former England striker Gary Lineker from the State Kremlin Palace concert hall in Moscow on Friday afternoon.

There could be 18 Reds taking part at the tournament in Russia next summer and the seven different nations they represent have discovered their three initial opponents once the biggest show on Earth commences on 14 June.

Here’s who the nations involving United players have been drawn against…

As was the case in the play-off round, more Reds could go head to head as England – featuring Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Ashley Young, Michael Carrick and Luke Shaw – were paired with Belgium – who have Marouane Fellaini and Romelu Lukaku in their ranks – in Group G, along with Tunisia and tournament debutants Panama.

Reds trio David De Gea, Ander Herrera and Juan Mata could be reunited with former United star Cristiano Ronaldo after 2010 World Cup winners Spain were paired with Euro 2016 winners Portugal. In Group B, La Roja will also be up against Iran, managed by former Reds assistant manager Carlos Queiroz, and a Morocco side who have qualified for the tournament for the first time since 1998.

Euro 2016 runners-up France, featuring United duo Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, will be favourites to top Group C, which consists of Australia, Peru and Denmark – who thrashed the Republic of Ireland 5-1 on aggregate in the play-off round to make the finals.

Argentina, involving Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo, will fancy their chances of progressing after being drawn against Nigeria in the group stages again, as they were in 2014 when they finished runners-up. Iceland, who reached the Euro 2016 quarter-finals, and Croatia will be their other Group D opponents.

Meanwhile, Nemanja Matic’s Serbia, who finished ahead of Wales and the Republic of Ireland in their qualification group, could face a challenge to advance to the Round of 16 as they were paired with Brazil, Switzerland and Costa Rica in Group E.

Victor Lindelof’s Sweden – who beat Matteo Darmian’s Italy in a two-legged play-off to reach Russia – face a tough task after being placed in Group F against holders Germany, Mexico and South Korea.

Unfortunately, other Reds such as Eric Bailly (Ivory Coast), Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Armenia), Antonio Valencia (Ecuador), Daley Blind and Tim Fosu-Mensah (the Netherlands) will not be at the finals.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has 'massive future' with Scotland, claims boss Alex McLeish

* Scott McTominay decided to represent Scotland over England earlier this month
* The 21-year-old midfielder has been in outstanding form for Manchester United
* McTominay's inclusion comes as new boss Alex McLeish names his first squad

Alex McLeish has tipped Scott McTominay to have a 'massive future' with Scotland after selecting him in his first squad since taking over.

The Lancaster-born Manchester United midfielder is one of six players receiving first call-ups after he pledged his international future to the native country of his Glaswegian father despite an approach from England.

Jose Mourinho has handed the 21-year-old starts in crucial games against Sevilla, Chelsea and Liverpool in recent weeks and McTominay has helped United secure positive results each time.

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has earned his first Scotland call-up. Scotland manager Scott McLeish has named his squad for their upcoming March friendlies

Quote:
SCOTLAND SQUAD TO FACE COSTA RICA AND HUNGARY

Goalkeepers: Jordan Archer (Millwall), Alan McGregor (Hull City), Jon McLaughlin (Heart of Midlothian)

Defenders: Barry Douglas (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Grant Hanley (Norwich City), Russell Martin (Rangers), Scott McKenna (Aberdeen), Charlie Mulgrew (Blackburn Rovers), Callum Paterson (Cardiff City), Andy Robertson (Liverpool), Kieran Tierney (Celtic)

Midfielders: Stuart Armstrong (Celtic), Tom Cairney (Fulham), James Forrest (Celtic), Ryan Fraser (Aberdeen), Kevin McDonald (Fulham), Dylan McGeouch (Hibernian), John McGinn (Hibernian). Calum McGregor (Celtic), Kenny McLean (Aberdeen), Scott McTominay (Manchester United), Jamie Murphy (Rangers), Matt Ritchie (Newcastle United)

Forwards: Ryan Christie (Aberdeen), Jason Cummings (Rangers), Oliver McBurnie (Barnsley), Matt Phillips (West Bromwich Albion)
McLeish said: 'I went to see him against Crystal Palace and Jose took him off at half-time and maybe people would jump on the back of that and say, 'Why are we picking him?'.

'But he had a fantastic game at the weekend against Liverpool, such a mature performance. We believe he has a massive future with Scotland.'

McLeish spoke to Mourinho about McTominay's international future but the United boss allowed the player to make his own decision.

McTominay is now set to feature as Scotland play friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary later this month.

'Jose didn't want to get involved in that side of it, but he was very complimentary about Scott's performance level, his maturity,' the former Aston Villa and Birmingham manager said.

'He thought if he chose us we would be getting a fantastic acquisition.'

UNITED STARS HEADING TO 2018 WORLD CUP

A number of Manchester United stars can look forward to playing at the World Cup finals, after being selected in their respective countries’ preliminary squads.

As it stands, seven first-team players have already been announced as being in line to fly to Russia for this summer’s tournament, which begins on 14 June and lasts for a month. Of course, others will follow when more national-team groups are confirmed.

Reds quartet Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford have been included in England’s provisional 23-man squad by Gareth Southgate.

It will be a first experience of a major tournament for Lingard, while Young will be going to his first World Cup as reward for another consistent season with the Reds.

It’s testament to the durability of the versatile full-back, who has been a regular in the England squad this season, as he turns 33 in July. Young was part of Roy Hodgson’s squad for Euro 2012, playing in all four matches as England were knocked out by Italy on penalties at the quarter-final stage.

Jones, who went to Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup, has fought off plenty of competition for a centre-back slot but, unfortunately, Chris Smalling was not called up.

Meanwhile, Rashford will be going to his second major finals, after becoming the youngest Englishman to appear at a European Championship, at the age of 18, when making two substitute appearances at Euro 2016, just months after breaking into the first team at United.

Elsewhere, Sergio Romero and Marcos Rojo have been named in Argentina’s extended 35-man squad for the tournament. Goalkeeper Romero will be going to his third successive World Cup finals, while defender Rojo will head to his second after being involved in 2014, when La Albiceleste finished as runners-up after losing 1-0 to Germany after extra time in the final.

Victor Lindelof has also been included in the Sweden squad, as the defender prepares for his second major tournament after featuring at Euro 2016. But former Reds star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who quit international duty after the tournament in France two years ago, wasn’t included in the 23-man squad, despite rumours he may come out of retirement to play in Russia.

AT-A-GLANCE: WHICH REDS ARE GOING TO THE WORLD CUP?
Phil Jones (England)
Ashley Young (England)
Jesse Lingard (England)
Marcus Rashford (England)
Sergio Romero (Argentina)
Marcos Rojo (Argentina)
Victor Lindelof (Sweden)

Lagi On Fire, Martial Kembali Dipanggil Timnas Prancis
Mohammad Resha Pratama - detikSport

MATIC RULED OUT OF SERBIA'S INTERNATIONAL MATCHES

Serbia head coach Mladen Krstajic confirmed on Tuesday that Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic will not play in their matches against Germany or Portugal.

The 30-year-old had recently missed a run of four matches across all competitions for the Reds - Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Paris Saint-Germain - but returned to the starting XI for the Premier League match against Arsenal.

Matic then played for 86 minutes last Saturday evening, in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-final tie against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molinuex, before he was replaced late on by Juan Mata.

Nemanja was initially selected as Serbia’s vice-captain for a friendly in Germany this evening and Euro 2020 qualifier against Portugal next Monday, but he will now not partake in either fixture.

On the Serbian FA’s official website, Krstajic is quoted: “Nemanja Matic will not play in Wolfsburg, nor in Lisbon. He played the last match in the club but did not stay in the field until the end.”

OUR LATEST INTERNATIONAL ABSENTEE

The news of Matic’s absence follows Monday evening’s announcement that Luke Shaw will not feature in either of England’s Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic or Montenegro due to injury.

On Sunday, the France Football Federation confirmed that Anthony Martial had pulled out of their squad to face Moldova and Iceland due to injury, while Sweden also revealed that Victor Lindelof had decided against representing his country in their fixtures due to personal reasons.

There is still a question mark over Romelu Lukaku after he missed our FA Cup tie at Wolves due to injury, but the striker is with the Belgium squad and it has been reported that his availability is being assessed by the national team staff. It remains to be seen if the big man will feature against Russia on Thursday or Cyprus on Sunday.

19 YOUNG REDS OUT ON INTERNATIONAL DUTY

Some 19 Manchester United youngsters, who have represented the Under-23s and Under-18s this season, have been called up to international duty – at six different under-age levels.

Many of the youth products will be busy accruing valuable experience with their countries before domestic action returns with the Premier League 2 fixture against West Brom at Old Trafford on 5 April, with free entry for all, and the Academy clash with Sunderland the following day.

Matthew Olosunde, has been selected to play for USA Under-23s as they prepare for the next Olympics. The defender will be at a training camp in Spain with matches against Egypt and the Netherlands on the horizon.

At Under-21 level, Lee O’Connor has been called up by Republic of Ireland after winning the Under-19 Player of the Year for his country. The defender has already trained with the senior squad, when Martin O’Neill was in charge, and is taking on Luxembourg.
Northern Ireland have handed Ethan Galbraith his first inclusion in the same age group, as the midfielder continues to rise through the ranks with his homeland. Goalkeepers Dean Henderson, who is shining for Sheffield United on loan as they push for promotion, and Alex Fojticek have been named in England and Slovakia’s Under-21 squads respectively.

Tahith Chong, who has been involved with United’s senior side under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is again with the Netherlands Under-21s. Regan Poole, currently on loan at Newport County, is with Wales in the same age group.

Centre-back Luca Ercolani looks set to feature for Italy’s Under-20s in matches against Czech Republic and Switzerland.

Four players who were involved in the UEFA Youth League game at Midtjylland have been called up at the same age group as the European competition – the Under-19s. Matej Kovar (Czech Republic), Angel Gomes (England), Dylan Levitt (Wales) and Nishan Burkart (Switzerland) will all look to impress, with the first two in direct combat on Wednesday at St George's Park.

England won 4-1, with Gomes assisting two of the goals, while Kovar saved a penalty in the first half from Ian Carlo Poveda.

Ethan Laird and James Garner are in the England Under-18 squad as they tackle Japan, Czech Republic and Mexico. Tricky forward Largie Ramazani will head to Dubai with Belgium Under-18s.

Defenders Teden Mengi (England) and Lukasz Bejger (Poland) and midfielder Charlie McCann (Republic of Ireland), who scored twice at Newcastle at the weekend for Neil Ryan’s side, will all be away from the Aon Training Complex on Under-17 duty.

INTERNATIONALS: WHEN ARE OUR PLAYERS IN ACTION?

Although it's an odd-numbered summer, with no senior World Cup or European Championship to look forward to, there is still plenty of football to be played on the international stage during June 2019.

While the rest of Manchester United's squad will have more time to rest and recharge their batteries for next season, eight of our first-team players are currently away with their countries. This group includes Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku, who could face each other in a Euro 2020 qualifying fixture, and Diogo Dalot, who has already played in the Under-20 World Cup with Portugal.

Here, we round up which Reds have been called up and when they could be in action…

BELGIUM
Already his country’s all-time leading scorer with 45 goals from 79 caps, Lukaku will look to increase his tally when Roberto Martinez’s side welcome Kazakhstan and Scotland to Brussels on 8 and 11 June respectively; both games are in Group I where Belgium have made a 100 per cent start to the qualifying campaign. Their 28-man pool also includes former United winger Adnan Januzaj, who currently plays for Spanish side Real Sociedad.

CHILE
As we reported earlier this week, Alexis Sanchez is part of Chile’s final 23-man squad for the Copa America, which gets under way in Brazil on 14 June. Our no.7, who has more caps and international goals than any other player in his country’s history, is targeting a hat-trick after winning the tournament in both 2015 and 2016. The Chileans will warm up for the competition by playing a friendly against Haiti on home soil on 7 June.

ENGLAND
Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford will hope to be involved as the Three Lions chase success in the Nations League in Portugal. First up is a semi-final clash in Guimarães on 6 June against the Netherlands, who have ex-United players Daley Blind and Memphis Depay in their squad and are managed by former Southampton and Everton boss Ronald Koeman. Gareth Southgate’s side will then face either Portugal or Switzerland in the third place play-off or final on 9 June.

FRANCE
Paul Pogba is in Didier Deschamps’s squad for the world champions’ friendly against Bolivia, and subsequent Euro 2020 qualifiers against Turkey on 8 June and Andorra three days later. Les Bleus will be aiming to build on their storming start in Group H, after beating Moldova 4-1 and Iceland 4-0 in their first two qualifiers back in March.

PORTUGAL
Diogo Dalot is currently in action in the Under-20 World Cup in Poland. The fledgling defender has played in both of Portugal’s group-stage games so far – a 1-0 win over South Korea and 2-0 defeat by Argentina. Diogo will hope to feature again in their final Group F fixture against South Africa tonight (Friday), with Helio Sousa’s team needing a positive result to stand a chance of qualifying for the knockout stage.

SCOTLAND
McTominay, who has seven caps to date, has been included in new Scotland manager Steve Clarke’s first squad, for the Euro 2020 qualifiers against Cyprus on 8 June and Belgium three days later. The 22-year-old midfielder had a positive end to the 2018/19 season for the Reds on a personal level, scoring against Wolves and Huddersfield as well as being voted April’s Player of the Month by fans.

SPAIN
David De Gea is likely to be in action as Luis Enrique’s team look to build on their two wins from two games so far in Euro 2020 qualifying Group F, with a trip to the Faroe Islands and a home game against Sweden in Madrid on 7 and 11 June respectively. Incidentally, fellow goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, of Chelsea, is the only other English-based player in the 23-man squad.
