Manchester United to invest millions in stadium upgrades at Old Trafford for disabled supporters

* Manchester United will spend heavily on Old Trafford upgrades for disabled fans
* United were threatened with legal action in May for failing to meet requirements
* They will now install 118 new wheelchair positions and 158 new amenity seats
* Purpose-built lifts will also be put in place at the back of the Stretford End

Manchester United are pouring millions of pounds into upgrading Old Trafford's disabled facilities.

United were threatened with legal action in May by the Equality and Human Rights Commission for a failure to meet requirements. Now they will create 118 new wheelchair positions and 158 new amenity seats across the stadium.

United managing director Richard Arnold said: 'Since the construction of new accessible facilities in 2017, we have worked closely with the club's Disabled Supporters' Association to further improve the provision for disabled supporters at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are pouring millions into upgrading Old Trafford's disabled facilities. They will create 118 new wheelchair positions and 158 new amenity seats across the stadium

'Our revised plans address the overwhelming majority of feedback we received from supporters and key stakeholders.'

United want the revamped facilities — which also include a larger concourse at the back of the Stretford End and purpose-built lifts — to be ready for the 2020-21 season.

The club had been accused of building the new section across some of the last £28 seats in the stadium, behind the goal, but the majority of those will be unaffected.

A small number of supporters will be moved and Arnold added: 'We will do everything we can to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible for anyone with seats impacted by the new accessible facilities.'

United have also been actively pursuing a boost in atmosphere at Old Trafford and have moved to designate two blocks in the Stretford End as singing areas.

Jose Mourinho baffled by Manchester United's 58 scouts following major restructuring at Old Trafford

* Manchester United have brought in new faces within the scouting department
* The Premier League outfit currently employ 58 scouts across the world
* The major restructuring is causing serious concern for manager Jose Mourinho
* The struggling manager wants a more streamlined operation at Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho is becoming increasingly baffled by Manchester United's bloated scouting department.

United have moved to swell their ranks with new faces over the last three years and currently employ 58 scouts across the world.

The major restructuring has been championed at Old Trafford but is causing serious concern for Mourinho, who wants a more streamlined operation.

Jose Mourinho has become baffled by Manchester United's bloated scouting department. A change in United's scouting set-up was required after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson

A change in the scouting set-up was required after the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Ferguson trusted a small circle of scouts and contacts to make signings but there was a realisation that United needed to modernise.

The number of scouts at the club is acting as a source of growing frustration for Mourinho, however. The Portuguese is believed to be perplexed at the scale of the department and privately argues the operation can be far more efficient.

Sources claim he has cited the example of Borussia Dortmund, who have a committee ruling on transfers. Mourinho updates his transfer wishlist on a monthly basis but has struggled to land many placed at the top of his list since taking over from Louis van Gaal.

The manager is in contact with chief scouts Marcel Bout and Jim Lawlor, although remains largely in the dark about the activity of those below them.

Talent spotters feed reports in to head of scouting operations Steve Brown, who handles the logistics surrounding transfer targets. They have recently advertised a new casual scouting position in London.

Mourinho also fears he will miss out on top target Kalidou Koulibaly in January. Koulibaly has been Mourinho's preferred defensive option since June but United chiefs vetoed a move for the Napoli centre half last summer.

The United boss is understood to be pessimistic about the prospect of signing the Senegal international, whose value is rocketing towards £90million.

Mourinho was desperate for defensive reinforcements over the summer and has since seen his side concede 23 goals in 14 Premier League games, more than any other team above the bottom five.

His doubts over which defender Woodward might sanction bids for next month - if anyone at all - come amid anxieties at the make-up of United's scouting division.

A new defender is deemed a priority by the management, while Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic were deployed in a back three during Saturday's lacklustre 2-2 draw at Southampton.

Mourinho bemoaned having only one match fit central defender at St Mary's, with Marcos Rojo an unused substitute.

Rojo's last match was in June, Argentina's defeat by France, and there are further selection worries ahead of Wednesday's crunch clash with Arsenal.

Mourinho fears he will miss out on top target Kalidou Koulibaly in the January transfer window

Victor Lindelof is out for a number of weeks with a hamstring problem. Eric Bailly has not played for almost two months and Chris Smalling missed the Southampton game with a foot complaint. Ashley Young is also out through suspension after picking up a fifth booking of the campaign.

United are now eight points adrift of the top four and Mourinho claimed on Monday that qualifying for the Champions League via their league position would be deemed a 'miracle'.

'Until last year I said that finishing second was a fantastic thing because of the qualities we had in comparison to the quality of the other teams that are fighting for the top four,' he told RedeTV.

'Already last year I said it. And this year with more problems that we have had, it proves what I said at the beginning of the season, that it would be a very difficult season. (We) try to win as many points as possible and try almost the miracle of finishing fourth.'

CHIVAS WHISKY RAISES FUNDS FOR UNITED'S FOUNDATION

A bottle of Chivas The Icon 50th Anniversary Limited Edition whisky has been sold at world-renowned auction house, Sotheby’s, for £21,780.

It was the only bottle in the limited edition run available to the public to buy, with 100 per cent of proceeds being donated to the Manchester United Foundation – reflecting Chivas and Manchester United’s shared belief in using success to enrich the lives of others.

The oldest whisky ever released by Chivas was blended to celebrate United’s famous European Cup final victory in 1968. In total, just four bottles of the 50-year-old Scotch have been created – one for each goal scored by the Reds on the memorable night at Wembley.
Sandy Hyslop, Chivas Director of Blending, commented:

“Chivas The Icon 50th Anniversary Limited Edition is an exquisite blend of our most luxurious and rarest whiskies. We’ve called on years of blending experience to craft a Scotch that truly embodies Manchester United and Chivas’ shared belief that success is a blend – in football, life and Scotch. The buyer of this bottle has got their hands on an iconic piece of history – this is the oldest Chivas blend ever created.”

John Shiels, Chief Executive of Manchester United Foundation, commented:

“We are extremely thankful to Chivas for its support and recognition of the Foundation through this auction. This generous donation allows us to continue delivering our wide range of programmes to people across Greater Manchester and will make a huge difference to those who need it most.”

The Official Spirits Partner of Manchester United, Chivas has gifted the second bottle of blended whisky to a lucky fan in a social media competition. The third limited edition bottle has taken pride of place in the Manchester United Museum, before it will be offered for private sale at an end of season event, with proceeds again being donated to the Manchester United Foundation. The final bottle will be placed on display at Strathisla distillery - the home of Chivas in Speyside, Scotland.

Manchester United could put up permanent netting to shield disabled fans after smoke grenade thrown by Wolves supporters this season

* Netting in front of away fans could be a permanent fixture at Manchester United
* The away section at Old Trafford is directly above the area for disabled fans
* Fans have been struck by a missiles including coins, bottles and umbrellas

Netting in front of away fans could be a permanent fixture at Manchester United after a smoke grenade was hurled at disabled supporters.

The away section at Old Trafford is directly above the area for disabled fans, who in the past have been struck by a missiles including coins, urine-filled bottles and umbrellas.

Now, after a smoke grenade landed next to a number of wheelchair-bound spectators at this season's clash with Wolves, United officials are examining ways to keep fans safe.

Netting in front of away fans could be a permanent fixture at Old Trafford (away end pictured)

Following complaints, United installed high netting for the Champions League fixtures against Juventus and Young Boys to great success.

Stadium staff are now carrying out a review and the nets could be in place for good. One solution may be to use the netting at selected matches where there are concerns that objects may be thrown from the away end.

Club officials believe that the flame-resistant mesh does not impact on away supporters' view and see it as useful in helping to keep fans safe.

United's disabled supporters group has welcomed netting and would like it to become permanent.

They say that, on occasions, chocolate bars, pies and disposable lighters have rained down on them and that when Michael Owen scored the winner in the 2009 derby against Manchester City, £13.48 was collected in coins that had been thrown.

The away section at Old Trafford (pictured) is directly above the area for disabled fans

There is no Premier League rule which prevents the installation of netting and the matter is one for United and their safety advisory group, who deal with such matters at Old Trafford.

Netting is commonplace at a number of grounds in Europe. In Germany, it features at many top Bundesliga sides and can be removed quickly in the event of an emergency.

On a number of occasions at various grounds players have had objects launched at them from the crowd. At last weekend's North London derby a Tottenham fan in the visiting section threw a banana skin at Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He was subsequently charged by police and has been told by Spurs that he will be given a lifetime ban.

Meanwhile, United are also looking at creating a 4,000-strong youth/atmosphere zone in a bid to raise noise levels at Old Trafford. Subject to demand, the section could be in place for the 2021-22 season.

Next season, 1,200 supporters will be moved from the current singing section to the Stretford End, which would host the area.

UNITED TEAMS TO SUPPORT RAINBOW LACES CAMPAIGN

Tonight (Wednesday)'s Premier League fixture against Arsenal and Manchester United Women's match against Durham Women will see both of our teams support Stonewall's Rainbow Laces initiative, as part of the club's #allredallequal campaign.

Manchester United is the only club to work directly with the charity as a member of TeamPride; a coalition of organisations dedicated to LGBT inclusion in sport and strengthening equality, diversity and inclusion within society.

United continues to develop its work within this essential area, as the club’s Pride Network, with the support of an Executive Sponsor, goes from strength to strength as it focuses on ensuring that Old Trafford is an inclusive and welcoming environment to all staff, supporters and visitors.

This has coincided with training for club staff on LGBT inclusion in the workplace, delivered by local charity The LGBT Foundation; upskilling employees to ensure that colleagues are supported and, ultimately, in a position to be themselves whilst at work.

Ahead of kick-off, United’s players will be lining up in front of rainbow branding, which will also be mirrored on plinths and on the substitutions board. Dedicated LED pitchside messages will be on show at Old Trafford this evening (Wednesday), while club social channels will adopt a dedicated rainbow theme; an icon commonly shared within the LGBT community.

At Manchester United Women’s game against Durham Women, which is also taking place this evening (Wednesday) at Leigh Sports Village, staff, players and supporters will be adding their backing to the campaign. Laces are being handed out to supporters, with programme and social media content and dedicated branding being put in place across the stadium.

Speaking of Manchester United’s partnership with Stonewall, our Group Managing Director, Richard Arnold, said: “Our involvement in TeamPride and our work in this area is something that we are all immensely proud of, and demonstrates Manchester United’s long-standing commitment to the club’s values around inclusion. We are fortunate to have staff and supporters from diverse backgrounds, and embrace the responsibility we all have to ensure that Old Trafford is a home for all Reds.”

Casey Stoney, Manchester United Women Head Coach, said: “Equality and inclusion are core values within Manchester United and are promoted both on and off the pitch. We are proud to be supporting Stonewall’s campaigning and encourage our fans to get behind the Rainbow Laces initiative to ensure that football is a sport for everyone.”

Manchester United’s equality, diversity and inclusion work continues to develop as part of the club’s #allredallequal campaign, with ongoing support and backing for Level Playing Field, MUDSA and Kick It Out.

REDS MAKE FANS' DREAMS COME TRUE

Jose Mourinho and his first-team players attended a special Christmas Dream Day this afternoon (Friday) for excited fans at Manchester United's Aon Training Complex.

The manager and team - including David De Gea, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford - gave the guests a Christmas to remember, at Manchester United Foundation’s bi-annual Dream Day for fans who suffer from serious and life-limiting illnesses.

The heart-warming event takes place twice a season with supporters travelling from across the UK to meet their footballing heroes and watch first-team training from the Jimmy Murphy Centre. At today’s event, everyone got into the Christmas spirit with the players donning Santa hats and giving out gifts, signing autographs and posing for photos with the guests.

Ashley Young, who has supported the Foundation and attended many Dream Days over his eight seasons with the club, said: “It’s massively important for us players to see the fans today and to give something back. It’s close to Christmas so it’s nice to give them an early present and to see the kids smiling at what is a tough time for them, and if we can do anything to cheer them up then that’s what we want to do.”

Among the group of 14 guests at the training ground was nine-year-old Hugh, who received an extra special gift when David De Gea gave him his very own signed goalkeeper gloves. “I’m speechless,” Hugh said. “My brothers are going to be very jealous; I’m never going to take these gloves off!”

Steven, 14, from Northampton was also delighted to meet the team, especially his favourite player Juan Mata. “It’s been amazing, a dream come true. I’ve met all the players but my favourite has to be Mata,” Steven said. “Today has definitely boosted my Christmas spirit and has been very exciting – it’s a great way to end this year.”
