Default Re: Jose Mourinho : MUFC Manager!

Jose's back... and it will save Spurs MILLIONS! Roma snap up free-agent Mourinho - meaning Tottenham will pay just a fraction of the £16million compensation package he was owed after April sacking

* Jose Mourinho is making a sensational return to the dugout by joining Roma
* The Italian side announced on Tuesday that current boss Paolo Fonseca will leave when the current season is finished
* Hours later, Mourinho was appointed on a three-year deal as the new manager
* The Portuguese manager will take the reins in time for the start of next season

Jose Mourinho has agreed to become Roma coach from next season — saving Tottenham as much as £13million in the process.

The Portuguese will replace Paulo Fonseca in the Italian capital ahead of the 2021-22 campaign as he heads straight back into management following his sacking by Spurs just over two weeks ago.

And his appointment is expected to save Spurs millions in compensation. The north London club put Mourinho on gardening leave following his dismissal, essentially meaning Tottenham would continue to pay the Special One's salary every month.

But the club will cease paying Mourinho once he officially starts work for Roma at the end of the season, meaning Spurs will pay the former Manchester United and Chelsea boss only a fraction of the £16m compensation he was due.

As Sportsmail exclusively revealed in April, the level of compensation Mourinho was entitled to in the event of his sacking was linked to performance-related clauses in his contract.

Spurs were seventh in the league when the decision was made to dismiss Mourinho — meaning the 58-year-old was not entitled to full compensation on his £10million-a-year basic salary.

Mourinho says he has been drawn to the Italian capital by the ambition of the club owners.

'Thank you to the Friedkin family (Roma's owners) for choosing me to lead this great club and to be part of their vision,' he said.

'After meetings with the ownership and Tiago Pinto (Roma's general manager), I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. It is the same ambition and drive that has always motivated me and together we want to build a winning project over the upcoming years.

'The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season.

'In the meantime, I wish Paulo Fonseca all the best and I hope the media appreciate that I will only speak further in due course. Daje Roma!'

General manager Tiago Pinto said the club could not miss the opportunity to appoint Mourinho. He said: 'When Jose became available, we jumped at the chance. We were blown away by Jose's desire to win and passion for the game.

'He possesses the knowledge, experience and leadership to compete at all levels. We know that in order to build a successful sporting project it takes time, patience and the right people in the right positions.'

The Portuguese boss, 58, has signed a three-year deal that will run through to 2024. It also ushers in a return to Serie A for Mourinho, who won the Treble with Inter Milan in a two-year spell at the San Siro from 2008 until 2010.

Sportsmail understands that Roma's emphatic 6-2 defeat by Manchester United in the Europa League last week speeded up the arrival of Mourinho.

Mourinho being available and ready to start was also appealing to Roma, with the Friedkin family who own the club looking to appoint the best free coach to replace Paolo Fonseca and avoid paying out millions in compensation.

Roma announced earlier on Tuesday that Fonseca will be leaving at the end of the season.

They had initially made a move for Maurizio Sarri, the former Chelsea, Juventus and Napoli boss, but ditched him in favour of Mourinho. The Portuguese boss wasted no time in sorting out an appropriate phone case for his next step in management.

Mourinho celebrated the news by posting a picture of a case in Roma's colours with the initials 'JM' onto his Instagram page on Tuesday afternoon alongside the caption: 'My new phone cover.'

In the meantime, Mourinho will be working for radio station talkSPORT across the summer with their coverage of Euro 2020.

Roma sit seventh in the Serie A standings and were thrashed 6-2 by United in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final at Old Trafford last week. The return leg in Italy is on Thursday.

Club president Dan Friedkin and vice-president Ryan Friedkin said: 'We are thrilled and delighted to welcome Jose Mourinho into the AS Roma family.

'A great champion who has won trophies at every level, Jose will provide tremendous leadership and experience to our ambitious project.

'The appointment of Jose is a huge step in building a long-term and consistent winning culture throughout the club.'

His appointment means a reunion with two of his former Manchester United players in Chris Smalling and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. He didn't enjoy the most seamless of relationships with defender Smalling during his time at Old Trafford.

Mourinho once appeared to publicly question his resilience, suggesting he was 'too cautious' in his recovery from a toe injury while playmaker Mkhitaryan just last week said he found it hard to get to grips with Mourinho's way of working.

'I never regret my decisions,' Mkhitaryan told The Athletic. 'At that time, he (Mourinho) was one of the most successful coaches in the world. I think he was the coach with the most trophies. So that was a different experience.

'It was very hard but I learned a lot as well. I learned how to defend, how to help the team. It was not only about scoring goals and making assists.

'It was more about the team winning so it doesn't matter who scored, we had to win together. It didn't matter who made the assist we must always be happy that we won the game.

'What I want to say is that I had a hard time but after the first two or three months there, I had a very good time. I won three trophies with the club, which was amazing.

'You know, some players have been playing in Manchester for ages but they haven't won anything.'

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy ruthlessly axed Mourinho on the Monday before the Carabao Cup final, which ended in a 1-0 defeat by Manchester City. Levy has placed former Spurs player Ryan Mason in charge for the rest of the season but no announcement on Mourinho's permanent successor has been made,

Mourinho won 45 out of his 86 games as Tottenham manager, drawing 17 and losing 24.

Mourinho is only the second manager after Giovanni Trapattoni to win five European titles. Mourinho also has won five of his five finals in Europe, a point he made known post-match

- pelatih kedua setelah Trapattoni yg memenangkan 5 juara Eropa
- pelatih pertama yg memenangkan UCL, EL & Conference League
- pelatih pertama yg juara Eropa dengan 4 klub berbeda

Jose Mourinho refuses to respond to questions over Portugal job as speculation grows he may replace sacked Fernando Santos... with Maniche backing the former Chelsea and Man United boss to take over

* Jose Mourinho refused to comment on questions about becoming Portugal boss
* The high-profile Roma manager was swamped by media asking about his future
* Fernando Santos was sacked on Thursday after their World Cup exit vs Morocco
* Mourinho's Roma predecessor Paulo Fonseca, 49, is also among the contenders
* Ex-Portugal midfielder Maniche said Mourinho taking over makes 'perfect sense'

Jose Mourinho has refused to comment on links to the vacant Portugal manager's job after being swamped by journalists.

Fernando Santos was sacked by the Portuguese FA on Thursday after his side's surprise World Cup quarter-final exit against Morocco.

And Mourinho, upon arriving in Faro with his Roma side, was bombarded with questions on his future from a pack of waiting journalists but did not respond at all.

Video on social media shows the high-profile boss, formerly of Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United, steadfastly ignoring the media's questions.

Mourinho, who won the inaugural Europa Conference League trophy with the Italian side in May, then smiles as he picks up a microphone cover from the floor and hands it back to a journalist, before climbing aboard a team bus with his players.

There has been speculation Mourinho could 'job-share', keeping his current role at Roma while also taking charge of his home nation, although doing both is extremely rare.

He has strong knowledge of Portuguese football, a good pedigree of winning trophies at the top level and has the clout to help manage big players with big reputations, for example Cristiano Ronaldo.

Former Portugal midfielder Maniche, who played under Mourinho at Porto and with the Blues, told Radio Renascenca that the 59-year-old would do a good job if he took over.

He said: 'He is an experienced coach who is very prepared for difficulties because he knows our football and football abroad, he is intelligent and knows how to deal with young people. He has already adapted to this generation and proved it by winning a title at Roma, which didn't happen a few years ago.'

Mourinho's Roma side, in Portugal for mid-season friendlies during the World Cup, return to Serie A action against Bologna on January 4.

Santos had famously led Portugal to European Championships success in 2016 and later won UEFA's inaugural Nations League in 2018-19.

Lille boss Paulo Fonseca is also believed to be among the contenders to replace Santos. But both the fans and the higher-ups in Portuguese football are thought to prefer Mourinho. Mourinho's presence in the dugout could help prolong the international career of veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo

Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday that the Portuguese Football Federation were considering plans to axe the coach following his eight-year stint in charge of the national team.

The PFF have now decided to let the manager go and are now on the hunt for a new head coach ahead of the Euro 2024 campaign, with Mourinho understood to be in the frame and Mourinho's predecessor at Roma, Paulo Fonseca, also believed to be a leading candidate.

Santos boldly chose to drop Portuguese icon Ronaldo ahead of his side's last-16 clash against Switzerland.

He had lost patience with the 37-year-old forward following his negative reaction after being substituted against South Korea during the group stage - and whoever takes over will have to manage the Ronaldo situation very carefully.
