Default United new era for the defence (under LvG strategy)

ManUtd.com - 31/07/2014 13:37
Irwin: Defenders must adapt in new era

In 12 years at Old Trafford, Denis Irwin*forged a reputation as one of the finest full-backs in the club's history, making 529 appearances and winning 15 major honours. Here, the Reds favourite takes time out from Tour 2014 to discuss United's defensive options...

It's a new era for the defence following the departures of experienced players Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. Louis van Gaal has come in and introduced a new 3-5-2 system, a formation I never experienced in my career. We have played five at the back occasionally in the past, when we've struggled with centre-halves being injured, but very rarely as we have done on tour.

We all saw Holland do particularly well at the World Cup and our first game against Galaxy went really well and we're undefeated so far this summer. We'll continue to be tested before the start of the season, so it'll be interesting to see how the formation fares. It's a learning curve for the players. I know they've got through a lot in training, but now they've got to put it into practice in matches. It is a new era and there aren't too many experienced players in our defence, with Jonny Evans being the oldest and most experienced of them all at 26.

I do think some of the defenders need to work on the vocal side of their game. Jonny is vocally strong but a couple of the other lads are quieter. One of them will have to take control and move people around. I'm sure that will come and I'm sure the manager will have encouraged them to be vocal. Any new system needs that but it comes with experience, too. When you're younger, you keep your head down a bit and get on with your game. It's up to the experienced players in defence to organise and Jonny's fine doing that.

They have obviously worked on the new formation in training, with the two outside centre-backs moving out wide to offer themselves to the ball. In the LA Galaxy match, that enabled Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia to get forward more than they might have normally been accustomed to in the full-back positions.

That's probably more of a learning experience for Shaw than it is for Valencia, because Antonio is a winger and is used to getting up and down. Antonio will have to learn more on the defensive side whereas Luke is used to playing left-back and covering his centre-half. He'll be able to get forward more in the new system. It will take them a while to get accustomed to that but they are good players and they'll be able to handle it no problem.

The modern day full-back has to be very comfortable on the ball and be able to go forward a lot more than a few years ago. But this system is different in that there's no winger in front of them, so they have to combine the jobs of a winger and full-back. It worked for Holland at the World Cup and they went unbeaten. We've started very well but there are testing games still to come, so I will be watching with interest to see how we get on.

It has been good to see young Michael Keane and Tyler Blackett come into the defence and get some game time too, but I think it's an area we may have to strengthen through the transfer market to give us more experience. By the end of this tour, I think the new manager will have a better gauge of the formation and the defenders he has to play in it. These are exciting and interesting times for United.

Default Re: United new era for the defence (under LvG strategy)

Dari 2 full back kiri dan kanan serta 2 center back, menjadi 3 back sejajar

Louis van Gaal is delighted with how well Manchester United’s defenders have adapted to the new system he has introduced on Tour 2014, presented by Aon.

The Reds’ back five – three centre-backs and two wing-backs – shone once again in the 3-1 win over Real Madrid on Saturday, limiting the European champions to only a handful of chances at Michigan Stadium.

Defensive solidity was also a feature of the three previous games on this tour and that has impressed van Gaal, who feels it is the area most affected by his formation changes.

The boss said at his post-match press conference: "It's amazing that they have picked up a new system like that, because it’s not new for Mata, for example – he plays in his position. Neither for Rooney, Welbeck nor the two midfielders.

"The greatest impact with this new system is on the back line. But we only conceded [allowed them to create] one chance in the first half and two in the second."

Michael Keane and Tyler Blackett were two of the defenders who performed admirably in the International Champions Cup match in Ann Arbor, even if Keane conceded the penalty which Gareth Bale converted in the first half.

Asked if the youngsters would be involved in the first team at the start of the season, van Gaal replied: “Not too early, because we have to see if they can fit in our team.

"You saw them play today and they can do the job but not for a lot of matches – they can do it for one match.

Maybe when you give them more matches, their experience shall increase. "But today the penalty was not so smart. He [Keane] has to learn from these errors. It’s the same for Tyler – he can also play at this level but can he play match after match? That is the question and I cannot answer that at the moment."

Smalling: I'll flourish in back three

Chris Smalling believes he can thrive in Manchester United's three-man defence, saying it allows greater flexibility for his game to flourish at centre-back.

Smalling started three of United's five matches in America and made one appearance as substitute and the unbeaten run for the Reds was all about putting in place the preparation work done on the training pitch.

"It's challenging but we've done a lot of work on it and I feel like we're making progress," he said. "I am enjoying it in terms of being a centre-half. It gives us that freedom to go all the way in with a striker and really be dominant and aggressive, and I like to think that fits my game. This system has given me a lot of confidence to be able to fit in and hopefully make it my place."

Smalling says communication will continue to be key to making the system work. "When we're attacking it can be a three and at other times it can be a five," he says. "There's always one pressing so you've got four covering and it does interchange. There's a lot of communication and we're doing a lot of work [in training] so that we're perfect in our roles."

The 24-year-old, who is aiming to make one of the centre-back slots his own this term, has played in central defence and at full-back and says that experience will aid him in van Gaal's new-look back line.

"This formation means that when you go all the way in with an opponent, you can be stepping into midfield or picking someone up in a wide position. That flexibility is something you need to be able to play this system."

FourFourTwo.com
Why Van Gaal's back three will make Manchester United vulnerable – but exciting
Thore Haugstad weighs up the pros and cons of the Dutchman's favoured system...

This season Louis van Gaal will attempt what no manager has achieved in living memory: to win the English league playing a back three. The Dutchman’s 3-5-2 system helped his home country to the World Cup semi-finals. Now it will also be seen at Old Trafford.

The decision is intriguing. Nobody can predict what will happen, but the Dutch World Cup campaign may offer some clues. Van Gaal is a renowned ‘system manager’ and, bar a couple of tweaks to accommodate individual traits, the 3-5-2 seen in Brazil will be largely the same as the one used in Manchester.*

Particularly interesting are its prospective clashes with more common systems, such as 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3. These strategic battles may throw up numerical advantages and disadvantages that could become key talking points throughout the season.*

Playing out from the back

The chief reason for Van Gaal’s decision appears to be the profiles of his key players. The 3-5-2 puts Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata in their natural positions. Other factors may be the lack of top-class wingers and the squad’s array of attacking midfielders.

But as a system, the 3-5-2 offers more. It boosts the side’s ability to play out from the back – a defining feature of Van Gaal’s philosophy. Facing a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3, it requires the opposition team to commit three players to close down the centre-backs. Even if the striker and the two wingers press, the wing-backs can come deep and provide two more options.*

Additionally, Van Gaal will drop a central midfielder back to support the defence (Ander Herrera). In essence, this involves six players plus the goalkeeper in the ball recycling process. If the opposition does commit five or six players to press, this leaves huge gaps upfield for the attacking trio to move into. One precise forward pass and the move is on.

Indeed, a vital part of Van Gaal’s build-up strategy is to launch passes into the feet of the strikers, who can then combine or lay it off to the more creative attacking midfielder. The conditions for this are improved by the positioning of the back three. Stretching across the pitch, they have more angles to play forward passes than the centre-backs in a back four. In particular, the defenders on the outside get more opportunities to direct passes inwards to forwards in an advanced position.

This increases the involvement of the forward trio, whose fluent movement and ability to combine in central areas is fundamental to the system’s attacking plan. It also explains why Van Gaal wants a left-footed defender.

Defensive worries

When his side is without the ball, Van Gaal has tended to prefer a high defensive line and a pressure that starts halfway up the opponent’s half. Facing a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1, he often chooses to be brave: his wing-backs move high up to close down the opposition full-backs.*

This preference leaves three centre-backs up against three attackers. With many teams favouring wingers who roam constantly and drop deep, this can in turn drag the outside centre-backs far up the pitch. This was sometimes the case with the Netherlands at the World Cup, as exemplified by the two regulars, Stefan de Vrij and Bruno Martins Indi, against Brazil.*

There are further consequences. With the wing-backs pushing up, space is left for wingers to exploit. Agile and tricky players can set up one-on-ones against outside centre-backs better suited to defending the penalty area. This forces central defenders out of their comfort zone to commit challenges in wide areas.

While De Vrij and Martins Indi were well-drilled having using the system at Feyenoord, similar scenarios pose challenges for Jonny Evans and Phil Jones. The demands placed on mobility and speed are significant. One warning of what may lie in store came through Raheem Sterling’s display against Jones during pre-season, the winger creating constant danger by speeding into the vast gaps gifted to him.*

Van Gaal himself appears to have recognised this as a notable chink in the 3-5-2 system’s armour. Facing Costa Rica at the World Cup – a team whose use of three centre-backs was well-documented – he switched to 3-4-3 and played Arjen Robben and Memphis Depay as pure wingers either side of Van Persie. He wanted to threaten the spaces out wide.*

These zones may well be what opposition managers will target when facing Manchester United. Yet Van Gaal will be aware of the havoc his attackers can create if his machinery clicks into gear. Many tactical battles lie ahead. It promises to be intriguing.*
