Paul Scholes was only seen in the red of Manchester United during his glittering playing career, but the former midfielder has finally got his hands on a new shirt.

The 39-year-old has been pictured showing off the 2014/15 away kit of Oldham Athletic - the team he has supported since he was a young boy.

The League One side shared an image of their most famous fan holding their bright new shirt on Instagram, along with the caption: 'Football legend Paul Scholes has got his new Latics away shirt - have you got yours? #oafc '

Penyesalan Xavi: Tak Pernah Bermain Bersama Scholes

Dalam kariernya yang gemilang, Xavi Hernandez menyimpan satu penyesalan kecil. Gelandang legendaris Barcelona dan Spanyol itu mengaku menyesal tak pernah punya kesempatan bersama Paul Scholes.

Xavi baru saja memutuskan pensiun dari timnas Spanyol. Selama 14 tahun berseragam La Roja, pemain berusia 34 tahun itu membantu negaranya juara dunia di 2010 dan menjuarai Piala Eropa 2008, 2012.

Di level klub, Xavi tak pernah meninggalkan Catalan. Menimba ilmu di tim junior Blaugrana dan promosi ke tim utama pada 1998 sebelum meraih berbagai sukses di sana.

Situasi serupa dialami oleh Scholes. Pemain legendaris Manchester United itu juga tidak pernah meninggalkan Old Trafford sebelum akhirnya benar-benar menutup kariernya pada 2013.

"Saat aku memikirkan tentang semua yang pernah aku menangi bersama Spanyol dan Barcelona, dan semua para pemain hebat yang pernah bermain bersamaku -- tidak mungkin bagiku memiliki penyesalan," kata Xavi yang dikutip Daily Mail.

"Mungkin satu penyesalan kecil adalah aku tidak pernah bermain dengan Paul Scholes," sahut dia.

"Aku tidak pernah meninggalkan Barcelona dan dia juga tidak pernah ingin meninggalkan Manchester United."

Barcelona's Xavi Insists His One Regret in Football Is Never Playing With United Legend Paul Scholes



Xavi Hernandez will be remembered as one of football's all time greats, but he has revealed that despite all of his success, which includes 3 Champions League titles, a World Cup and 2 European Championships among many other trophies, he does still have one minor regret.

He has worn the same shirt as the likes of Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Ronaldinho, but it is Manchester United legend Paul Scholes he feels is the one name missing from his illustrious list of team-mates.

The Barcelona player, who recently announced his retirement from international football, is quoted by the Daily Mail as saying, "When I think about all I have won with Spain and Barcelona and all the great players I have played with - it is impossible for me to have any regrets".

But he continued to add, "Maybe one small regret is that I never got to play with Paul Scholes - but I was never going to leave Barcelona and he was never going to leave Manchester United."

Xavi's admittance perhaps comes as little surprise. The 34-year-old is known to be a huge fan of English football and has openly admired Scholes for a number of years. In 2011 he spoke glowingly about his English hero describing him as the "most complete" and "best central midfielder" that he had seen in 20 years.

"He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more."

Such sentiments were also previously echoed by Zinedine Zidane.

Scholes and Xavi met in opposition several times over the years, however there was once a possibility that they might actually have become team-mates. Back in 1999 the midfielder was finding it difficult to break into the Barcelona first team and was considering his options. United were very interested as was Xavi, but an injury to Pep Guardiola gave the youngster his Nou Camp chance and he didn't look back.

After that, as he said, he was never going to leave.

Manchester United legends Paul Scholes, Bryan Robson and Edwin van der Sar are just some of the former Reds stars who will be feature in a charity match against Bayern Munich on Saturday.

The match, which takes place at the Allianz Arena, will see the current Bundesliga champions' legends side take on United's greats of the past.

The two sides have met on many occasions in the past, most notably the 1999 Champions League final which United won as part of their famous treble.

Paul Breitner - who led West Germany to the 1974 World Cup - will captain a Bayern Munich side featuring Marc van Bommel and ex-United midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: 'I am sure the event will be a very special one.'

Money raised from ticket sales will go towards the Allianz foundation for children.

Paul Scholes has revealed that a coaching role in football has never been something that he former Manchester United midfielder has been 'passionate about'.

Despite being part of United's backroom staff towards the end of last season, Scholes claims working behind the scenes wasn't something that got him going.

Speaking to Sam Wallace of the i and Independent, Scholes said: 'I am not really bothered about pressure or it being a tough job.

'In the coaching stints I have had I don't know if coaching is something that has really got me going.

'It's not something that gets me out of bed in the morning thinking "I really want to do this". But in the next couple of years, who knows?'

The 39-year-old, who featured in the Class of '92's 5-1 defeat at the hands of Salford City on Thursday night, was drafted in after the sacking of David Moyes last season as his former team-mate Ryan Giggs took the helm for the final four games of the Premier League season.

Player-manager Giggs inspired his team to a 4-0 Premier League win against Norwich in his first game in charge before slumping to a 1-0 defeat against Sunderland the following week.

The Welshman picked up seven points from a possible 12 during his brief spell in charge and Scholes believes a slightly better record could have seen the now assistant manager being offered the full-time job instead of Louis van Gaal.

Scholes added: 'We would like to have won four games and maybe Ryan would have had a better chance to get the job full-time.

'It was great working with him and being with Nicky (Butt) and Phil (Neville).
'Ryan was great as well and I am sure he is being groomed to be the manager in the next few years.'

Paul Scholes insists he is ready to tell it how it is in his new role as a TV pundit.

But it seems Class of '92 team-mate Gary Neville is already looking to cool him down, after throwing an ice bucket over him.

Scholes, who upset Wayne Rooney earlier this summer with his scathing views, joined Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and a host of other Old Trafford favourites for a charity game against non-league Salford City on Thursday night.

The former England midfielder will embark on his latest career turn next week as a pundit for BT Sport in their Premier League curtain-raiser between United and Swansea.

Speaking to Sam Wallace ahead of the launch of his new column in the i and Independent newspapers, he vowed not to change his forthright ways.

'I say it as I think it is. It might upset people,' said Scholes, who will Scholes also join ITV's coverage throughout the new season.

'I don't intend to upset anyone.'

One person Scholes did upset, however, earlier this summer was Wayne Rooney.

The 39-year-old hit the headlines after he suggested Rooney was 'past his best' in an online World Cup column for bookmakers Paddy Power.

Striker Rooney was angered by the cutting comments, saying Scholes had 'upset a lot of people at Manchester United'.

'It was a bit strange, I'll be honest, but he has his opinions and he's entitled to them,' Rooney said in June.

'I'm sure he's upset a lot of people at Man United because they see me as worthy of signing a new deal at the club, so they obviously have got a different opinion to what Paul has.'

But despite the row with Rooney, Scholes is refusing to play Mr Nice Guy this season and added: 'Whether it is right or wrong, it's up to people to decide. But it will be my opinion.'

Scholes, meanwhile, was unable to prevent the United legends losing 5-1 in front of a bumper crowd of over 12,000 in Eccles and was showered with ice cubes by Neville immediately after the defeat.

And speaking to the I and Independent newspapers, he insisted he doesn't miss playing professional football.

'It's not something I think about,' said Scholes, who also admitted that it was Sky Sports star Neville who 'twisted his arm' into following his footsteps when he hung up his boots just over a year ago.

'I think I have handled retirement OK. I will always miss playing but I have to realise I can't go on forever.'
