'I don't know how he saved it!': Marcus Rashford and Peter Schmeichel lead praise for 'unbelievable' David de Gea after his heroic display in Man United's win over West Ham... days after he was 'excluded from Spain's 55-man provisional World Cup squad'

* Marcus Rashford showered praise on David De Gea after Man United's win
* The Spanish goalkeeper produced a string of excellent saves to deny West Ham
* Hammers boss David Moyes called the 31-year-old's performance 'fantastic'
* De Gea was not featured in Spain's 55-man provisional World Cup squad

Marcus Rashford was one of many personalities across the footballing world heaping praise on David De Gea after the Spaniard's exceptional performance in Manchester United's win over West Ham.

The 31-year-old made a number of crucial saves as United extended their unbeaten Premier League run to five games on the bounce.

Undoubtedly the pick of the bunch was De Gea's stretching second-half dive to his right side to deny a Kurt Zouma header that looked otherwise certain to level the game.

Speaking following the game, matchwinner Marcus Rashford led the praise for the United stalwart:

'David was excellent. Zouma's header I don't know how he saved it and then the one from Rice. David is a top keeper who produces top moments like that.'

David De Gea produced a phenomenal performance as Manchester United defeated West Ham

Rashford wasn't the only United fan favourite to sing the Spaniard's praises however, legendary goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel took to Twitter to praise the United number one.

'David De Gea. Unbelievable.'

Though his two late saves to deny Zouma and Declan Rice almost certainly cost West Ham a point at Old Trafford, Hammers boss David Moyes did not shy away from complimenting the veteran 'keeper.

'David de Gea was fantastic. We know how good a goalkeeper he is, he has been such a good keeper for so many years here. The two he saved were worldies. I'm pleased for him because he is a great guy but it's important for us to get something today and we didn't get it.'

The Spaniard made two crucial saves in the final ten minutes to deny Kurt Zouma and Declan Rice. West Ham boss David Moyes heaped praise on his former goalkeeper following the game

Aaron Cresswell also discussed the frustration of facing an elite goalkeeper like De Gea at the peak of his powers.

'Yeah I think he made some unbelievable saves, on another day they go in. It's frustrating on our part that we haven't taken anything from the game. In the dressing room we said it feels like the worst case scenario because we should have definitely got something.'

De Gea's impressive performance comes just days after he was snubbed by Spain manager Luis Enrique ahead of the upcoming World Cup.

Enquire's 55-man provisional squad for the tournament, which included five goalkeepers, did not feature the Manchester United star who has not represented his country since 2020 and looks unlikely to add to his 45 international appearances in the near future.

setelah tidak masuk ke dalam daftar 55 nama pemain Spanyol yg diseleksi ke PD, penampilan De Gea tadi semalam yg berbuah MOTM membuktikan dia masih layak untuk masuk timnas dan berlaga di PD 2022

DE GEA: BEAT THE BEST TO BE THE BEST

David De Gea says Manchester United must beat the best sides in Europe if we are to achieve continental glory and he classes Barcelona as one of the top teams.

De Gea, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Monday, can look forward to a return to his homeland in February, with United facing the Catalans at Camp Nou on Thursday 16 February (17:45 GMT kick-off).

That’s the first leg of our Europa League play-off tie, with Xavi’s side visiting Old Trafford the following week.

Barca are currently top of La Liga, having won 11 of their 13 games so far this season, and despite the difficulty of the opposition, David sees it as an obvious glamour tie for supporters to relish in the new year.

“We know Barcelona is a great team, I think they are playing well,” De Gea told us.

“If you want to win the Europa League, you have to play against the best teams and Barcelona is [one of these].

“It’s one for the fans and we will try our best to win both games.”

Barcelona are one of the eight teams dropping into the Europa League, with a defeat to Internazionale in Italy ultimately proving terminal to their hopes of progressing from Champions League Group C.

Despite the quality of the sides entering the competition from the Champions League, the last four editions of the Europa League have been won by sides starting the season in the tournament, a run De Gea will hope continues.

“Yeah, I think so [it's a good test]. There’s still a lot of time [before we have] to play the Europa League games so we have to be focused on the rest of the games [before then].

“Of course, playing against the best teams is always a challenge, so we need to be very ready to play against Barcelona and to play against any team that we have to play against.”

Stunned David de Gea was 'congratulated on his retirement from Spain duty despite having no intention to quit after his World Cup snub'... with the country's FA chief texting the Manchester United star to tell him he was 'glad' to hear the false news

* David de Gea was 'shocked' to be congratulated on his international retirement
* However, the 32-year-old has no intention of hanging up his gloves for Spain
* De Gea's last Spain appearance came in a 1-0 loss to Ukraine in October 2020
* Since then Unai Simon has emerged as Luis Enrique's first-choice goalkeeper
* The Manchester United keeper was left out of Enrique's 26-man squad for Qatar

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea was left bemused by a congratulatory message from the Spanish FA on his retirement from international duty - despite being yet to hang up his gloves.

The 32-year-old was left out of La Roja boss Luis Enrique's final 26-man World Cup squad, with Unai Simon, Robert Sanchez and David Raya taken instead.

A veteran of 45 appearances for his country over six years, De Gea reportedly received a message of congratulations from Luis Rubiales, the head of the Spanish FA, over text.

Journalist Jose Alvarez told Spanish outlet El Chiringuito: 'De Gea has been a bit of a strange subject.

David de Gea has been erroneously congratulated on his international retirement by Spain's FA. Head of the Spanish FA Luis Rubiales sent De Gea congratulations for making the 'decision'

'Suddenly he disappeared from the call ups a few months ago and Luis Enrique did call David to tell him he was not going to count on him. He told him that it was a technical decision. Obviously, David asked him what the reason was, but he was not given any further explanation.

'A few days later David receives a message from (Luis) Rubiales, president of the Federation, who says "David I am glad that you have finally made the decision you have been thinking about. I have already been told that you are leaving the national team".

'To this David replies "Sorry? There is no renunciation of anything, who has told you that I renounce anything? The coach has told me that he is not going to count on me, but I have never renounced the national team, nor do I intend to do so, that is if I am called up".

'He was a bit surprised by the communication between Luis Enrique and Rubiales and the message that arrived from Rubiales afterwards.

'The last year and a half De Gea has been very good, being a protagonist for Manchester United in almost every game and he was seen as being a part of the three in the national team.

The Man United keeper's last appearance came in October 2020 against Ukraine. De Gea's positioning was criticised in that 1-0 Nations League defeat against Ukraine. Since Luis Enrique's return to the Spain post De Gea has only made four appearances in goal

'I do not say he should be a starter, but he believed he could contribute apart from experience. He was a bit surprised that Rubiales sent him the message saying that he was going to resign from the national team or that he had made the decision after thinking about it, never mind congratulations for taking the decision.'

De Gea had been a mainstay in the Spain national team since making his debut under World Cup-winning manager Vicente del Bosque in 2014, but he has since slipped out of favour under Enrique.

His last appearance between the sticks for his country came in an October 2020 clash against Ukraine, and he has been slowly slipping further and further down the pecking order since Enrique's return.

Barcelona's former treble-winning manager has put faith in Athletic Bilbao's Unai Simon, who was handed the No 1 shirt for last summer's delayed Euro 2020 competition.

Since then he had continued to be called up, but failed to make an appearance before he was dropped from the squad entirely in November 2021.

The decision to drop De Gea from his Qatar World Cup squad naturally created some backlash for Enrique, and the numbers behind the three goalkeepers selected do not necessarily justify his stance.

The Man United shot-stopper has conceded 20 goals in just 14 Premier League games this season - 23 in total - and with only five clean sheets in those 14 games he would not have brought any great form with him to the World Cup.

Luis Enrique did not select De Gea as part of his 26-man Spain squad for the Qatar World Cup. Despite being part of the Euro 2020 squad for Spain, De Gea was left on the bench throughout. Spain No 1 Unai Simon is the only of the picked keepers with better numbers than De Gea

However, Brentford's Raya and Brighton's Sanchez have both only managed four clean sheets in the top-flight, with the former conceding five more goals than De Gea and the latter only one fewer than his Man United counterpart.

Apparent No 1 Simon has at least outperformed the 32-year-old, with six clean sheets and only 14 goals conceded at the heart of a mean Bilbao defence that has earned them fourth place in LaLiga before the World Cup break.

But despite a resurgence in form for the Spaniard, and an apparent rebuttal of the idea of retirement, it remains to be seen whether De Gea can work his way back into Enrique's good graces when his country already counted him out.

The 32-year-old's club future is equally uncertain with his current contract up in summer 2023. The Qatar World Cup is the first tournament De Gea has not been part of since his 2014 debut

This month's World Cup is the first tournament that De Gea will miss out on since making his senior Spain debut in 2014, having been the No 1 at both the previous World Cups and Euro 2016.

And there is equal uncertainty over his club future, with his current contract at Man United set to expire at the end of the season.

The Red Devils have the option of extending his deal by a further 12 months, but it is yet to be seen whether Erik ten Hag will continue to put faith in the shot-stopper, or look to bring in a new recruit as part of his ongoing rebuild at Old Trafford.

David de Gea is convinced contract talks with Man United will 'end in a good way' despite club chiefs wanting to slash his £375k-a-week wages, with the Spaniard set to be offered a pay cut to stay at Old Trafford

* David de Gea has entered the final six months of his Manchester United contract
* The 32-year-old is expected to offered a pay cut from his £375k-a-week wages
* De Gea claims he is relaxed over the talks and hopes to extend his 12 season stay
* The Spaniard has been able to negotiate with foreign clubs since New Year’s Day

David de Gea is convinced that contract negotiations with Manchester United are set to ‘end in a good way’ and he will extend his career at Old Trafford.

De Gea made his 510th appearance for United in Tuesday’s win over Bournemouth – moving into 10th place on the club’s all-time list – and was in top form as he kept his fourth clean sheet in a row.

However, United declined to trigger the automatic 12-month extension in the Spaniard’s contract last month when they gave Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Fred an extra year on their deals until June 2024.

It means that De Gea is set to become a free agent in the summer and has been able to negotiate with foreign clubs since New Year’s Day.

United are understood to be reluctant to keep the former Atletico Madrid keeper for another year on his current £375,000-a-week salary, and want De Gea to accept a pay-cut before offering him a new contract on reduced terms.

The club are not actively looking for a replacement even though it emerged on Wednesday that United are in talks with Crystal Palace to sign Jack Butland until the end of the season after Newcastle cut short Martin Dubravka’s loan.

De Gea is in his 12th season at United after moving to Old Trafford from Atletico for £18.9million in 2011, and is optimistic that a compromise can be struck so he can stay at the club even longer.

‘I’m very relaxed,’ he said after the win over Bournemouth. ‘I just focus on training and perform as best as I can. But, for sure, it's going to end in a good way. I hope so.

David de Gea claims he is relaxed as talks continue over a new Manchester United contract. De Gea will be offered reduced terms by the club from his current £375k-a-week wages. The 32-year-old is the club's current longest-serving star after joining under Sir Alex Ferguson. De Gea is the only member of United's 2013 Premier League title-winning side still at the club

‘I was saying this is my club. I've been here many, many years and it's a huge honour to be here and I'm so happy here.’

De Gea came to United’s rescue on several occasions in the second half of a 3-0 win over Bournemouth as they gave up a number of chances, leaving Erik ten Hag unhappy over his team’s sloppiness.

‘He was a bit angry because we conceded too many chances and we were too open at the end of the game,’ added De Gea, who has not conceded at home in the league for four months.

‘Every save is important. I just have to help the team and try my best. We’re so happy, it was a massive three points for us. We controlled the game really well, just in the last 15 or 20 minutes they had some good chances as well, but probably the players felt a bit tired at the end.’

Ten Hag opted to leave his first-choice central defensive partnership of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez on the bench, and play Harry Maguire alongside Victor Lindelof in front of De Gea.

The former Spain international said it made no difference to him and praised the way Ten Hag has instilled a new team spirit after inheriting a divided dressing-room when he took over in the summer.

‘We changed two centre-backs and they played really well,’ said De Gea. ‘I feel comfortable with everyone. It doesn't matter who is playing, everyone is ready to perform and it's great to have a proper squad.

‘It doesn't matter who you put together in the team. Even Luke Shaw played at centre-back (against Nottingham Forest and Wolves) and he played really well in two difficult games. I love to see the players like this, it's very enjoyable.

‘Everyone is ready, everyone is focused, everyone is training really well, everyone is in the same direction, so this is massive. It doesn't matter who is playing.

‘Even the subs today, it doesn't matter who came in, they put everything on the pitch. We have great team spirit and, for me, it's great to see the players play in this way.

‘The manager is doing well. He puts every player in the same direction and we feel like a proper team. Everyone wants to win, everyone wants to play for this club and that's massive.

‘He brought a great spirit to the team. We are playing really well, and this is the way we have to show and keep the momentum as well.’
