Lionesses hero Alessia Russo scored a stoppage-time winner as Manchester United came from behind to end Arsenal’s record-breaking 14-match winning run.

The Gunners had won every match this season and looked like extending that to seven perfect games until two late headers - from Millie Turner then Russo - completed a last-gasp comeback in a superb advert for the Women’s Super League at the Emirates Stadium.

In a match that typified the cliche ‘game of two halves’, United dominated the first half and led at the break through Ella Toone, before the Gunners scored a quick pair of goals to go ahead.

And after ending Arsenal’s winning run - the longest in WSL history - United boss Marc Skinner has set them another Gunners record to smash.

‘I would love to sell out Old Trafford in a fortnight,’ said Skinner. United’s next match against Aston Villa on December 3 is expected to break the WSL attendance record set by Arsenal here in September. The 40,064 in this match was the second-highest in history.

‘I am the happiest man on the planet,’ added Skinner. ‘This team is a privilege to coach - I want to be the most successful team in the country.’

Skinner’s side deservedly led at the break after a goalkeeping howler from Manuela Zinsberger, who flapped at a cross to gift Toone a tap-in.

Arsenal improved and were level less than a minute after the restart. Frida Maanum drove from the 40-metre line - the markings from last week’s rugby league match here were still visible - to the edge of the box and scored via a wicked deflection off Maya Le Tissier.

The Gunners then led after a stellar Laura Wienroither volley but United summoned some late energy and peppered Zinsberger with a flurry of shots, before Turner and Russo headed home to complete a fantastic turnaround.

These sides are now level on 18 points at the WSL summit, though Chelsea will go top with a point on Sunday at Stamford Bridge against Tottenham.
