Default 2014 PFA Footballer of the Year Award

The SAS, but not as you thought... Foster reveals Suarez and Shaw as his picks for PFA Player of the Year accolade

With both Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge banging in the goals for title-chasing Liverpool, it could be a close run thing between the pair for the PFA Footballer of the Year Award.

But the Uruguayan is guaranteed at least one vote after West Bromwich goalkeeper Ben Foster revealed his choices for the annual players' players accolade on Twitter.

Foster believes that Suarez's 28 goals in the Barclays Premier League this season mean he should take home the prestigious honour ahead of 20-goal Sturridge.

My picks: West Bromwich goalkeeper Ben Foster tweeted his selection for the PFA Player of the Year award, opting for the Liverpool striker Luis Suarez

Both members of the lethal SAS partnership make Foster's team of the year, with Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard also included.

Foster goes for impressive Southampton left-back Luke Shaw as his Young Player of the Year and the England international also lines up in the best XI.

David Marshall of Cardiff is the chosen goalkeeper, Seamus Coleman of Everton at right-back and Chelsea duo Branislav Ivanovic and Gary Cahill in the middle.

Alongside Gerrard in midfield are Manchester City's Yaya Toure, Eden Hazard of Chelsea and Adam Lallana of Southampton.

The winners will be announced at London's Grosvenor House on April 27.

Default Re: 2014 PFA Footballer of the Year Award

Suarez, Gerrard, Hazard... who do our team of experts think will be crowned the Premier League's Player of the Year?

It's that time of year again, with the fight to clinch the Premier League Player of the Year drawing ever closer.

Luis Suarez is the division's top scorer with 29 goals already, while Eden Hazard has shown why Chelsea spent so much money on him last year. David Silva consistently pulls the strings for Manchester City.

This season's title race is one of the more keenly-anticipated in recent memory, with this coveted prize may be a little more straightforward to sort out.

Gary Lineker tweeted that he felt Suarez would take the gong - closely followed by Steven Gerrard and Vincent Kompany - but who is leading the way? Sportsmail's reporters give their top three as we head into the final six weeks of the season.

JAMIE REDKNAPP

1. Luis Suarez; 2. Eden Hazard; 3. Yaya Toure

Luis Suarez has been magnificent and Brendan Rodgers is a class act. They are the player and manager of the year. Last year they were 28 points off the title and now they lead by two. That is an incredible turnaround.

MATT BARLOW

1. Luis Suarez; 2. David Silva; 3. Eden Hazard

The intensity and drive of Suarez is incredible. It defines his ability to influence games from the first minute to the last. He still plays on the edge, he plays for penalties, but has found a way to banish the worst excesses from his game, which should be applauded. Competition would have been more fierce if Aaron Ramsey or Sergio Aguero had not been hit by injuries.

LEE CLAYTON

1. Luis Suarez; 2. Steven Gerrard; 3. Yaya Toure

If I could be one footballer it would be Steven Gerrard. He is the modern-day Bryan Robson and it would be a joy if he gets his hands on the title trophy. But he will only achieve that if the magnificent Luis Suarez keeps scoring. What a season he has had, how can he not win the awards?

Bang! The striker has managed to score 29 goals since the end of September for the title chasers

Jinking: David Silva often holds the key in and around the box for Manchester City under Manuel Pellegrini

SAMI MOKBEL

1. Luis Suarez; 2. Eden Hazard; 3. Daniel Sturridge

Absolutely no contest this season. Suarez has been far and away the best player in the country. Could be a different story next season with Liverpool's increased workload in Europe - if he stays, of course…

IAN LADYMAN

1. Suarez; 2. Sturridge; 3. Toure

Hard to look past Suarez. Liverpool wouldn't be top without him. Sturridge has supported him manfully though and that's not always an easy task.

MARK ALFORD

1. Steven Gerrard; 2. Yaya Toure; 3. Adam Lallana

As well as being the stand-out player, the Player of the Year has to be a stand-up fella. Sorry, Luis, you may have been the best but it’ll take more than one season on the straight-and-narrow to convince me.

Instead – and in part tribute to you and your team-mates’ attacking verve and title charge – my vote goes to the one, true statesman in our game, Steven Gerrard. He’s adapted perfectly to his new, deep-lying role and he deserves all the honours we can bestow on him.

LAURA WILLIAMSON

1. Luis Suarez; 2. Yaya Toure; 3. Steven Gerrard

For ripping up the record books, scoring goals for fun, playing with such expressive joy and making Anfield dream again, it just has to be Luis Suarez.

Renaissance: Steven Gerrard has led by example for Brendan Rodgers' side ahead of the World Cup in Brazil

JOHN EDWARDS

1. Luis Suarez; 2. Eden Hazard; 3. Yaya Toure

Suarez by a distance, for the volume of goals, obviously, but also the variety. They have come from all angles, any distance and either foot. The 19-minute first-half hat-trick against Norwich in December stands out as the abiding memory, a sharp close-range finish, outrageous dipping volley from near the centre circle and crisp right-foot half-volley from 20 yards.

He doesn’t rely on service from others, either. He creates so much for himself, with his ability to wriggle past defenders and open up space. Peerless.

CHRIS WHEELER

1. Luis Suarez; 2. Yaya Toure; 3. Eden Hazard

Toure has been immense for Manchester City, scoring 21 times from midfield, and Eden Hazard has been magnificent for Chelsea. But, love him or loathe him, Suarez’s 29 Premier League goals for a resurgent Liverpool surely make him the outstanding choice.

SAM CUNNINGHAM

1. Yaya Toure; 2. Luis Suarez; 3. Eden Hazard

Suarez has been lethal this season but he's yet to score against a top four side and Toure's goal-scoring exploits from midfield are equally as impressive in my opinion.

Leggy but effective: Toure has notched a whopping 21 goals from midfield this season

Fleet-footed: Chelsea have relied on Belgian Eden Hazard's mercurial powers going forward this year

CRAIG HOPE

1. Luis Suarez; 2. Daniel Sturridge 3. Steven Gerrard

Suarez has now taken his scoring numbers to the level populated by only Messi and Ronaldo. He doesn’t do form, he is form – a relentless, rampaging rascal who WILL fire Liverpool to the title.

JACK GAUGHAN

1. Luis Suarez; 2. Eden Hazard; 3. Adam Lallana

Twenty-nine goals for a man who didn't play until the end of September is absolutely phenomenal - there can't be anyone to pip Suarez. Hazard and Lallana come closest, though. The former has dragged Chelsea through games at times - imagine if they had a goalscorer - while Lallana's style and ability to pick holes in defences epitomises the classy way in which Southampton go about their business.

ADAM SHERGOLD

1. Luis Suarez; 2. Yaya Toure; 3. Adam Lallana

From agitating to leave Anfield last summer to Premier League top scorer and possibly a title winner, the Suarez transformation has been unbelievable. Kudos to Brendan Rodgers for the man management.

Cool customer: Liverpool have been indebted to the goals of Daniel Sturridge alongside Suarez

Flying high: Adam Lallana has epitomised Southampton's classy style of play in behind Rickie Lambert

sepertinya kemungkinan besar Premier League's Player of the Year musim ini akan jatuh ke tangan Suarez. Suarez & Sturridge sepertinya akan masuk 3 besar & Sterling bisa dapat gelar pemain muda terbaik. gpp la Pool dapat gelar 'hiburan' tsb, asal jangan dapat gelar BPL aja ....................

Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Eden Hazard, Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Adam Lallana nominated for Player of Year award

The nominees for the 2013-14 PFA Players' Player of the Year award have been announced with three Liverpool players named among the six contenders.

Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and Daniel Sturridge are three of the players on the shortlist for the prestigious award, the winner of which will be announced at a ceremony in London on April 27.

The nominations also include Chelsea midfielder Eden Hazard, Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure and Southampton's Adam Lallana.

Suarez is the firm favourite to land the award after a stellar season in which he has already scored 29 league goals.

Hazard and Sturridge are also nominated for the young player of the year prize, along with Southampton left-back Luke Shaw, Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey, Everton midfielder Ross Barkley and Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling.

PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor, OBE, said: 'These awards celebrate outstanding achievement in football and looking at this year's nominations it is clear that this has been an incredibly competitive year.

'Each of the six men nominated for the Players' Award could expect to be recognised by their fellow professionals, as they have each had a superb season individually and played significant roles in the success of their clubs this year.

'The quality of the Young Player nominations is a cause for real celebration. There are some extremely talented players coming through at the highest level of our domestic game and four of the six nominees already play for England, with Aaron Ramsey a stalwart of the Welsh national side.'

BT Sport has agreed a deal to take over as the main sponsor of the prestigious awards, which will be held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on April 27. The awards will be hosted by Jake Humphrey and a 30-minute highlights show aired on BT Sport the next day.

Gavin Patterson, Chief Executive of BT Group, said: 'We are delighted to extend our support for football by sponsoring the PFA Awards. This year's winners will be joining an extremely distinguished list of previous winners. We are really pleased to show our support for male and female professional players at every level.

'As broadcasters of the Barclays Premier League, FA Cup with Budweiser, FA Women's Super League and the Skrill Football Conference, BT Sport is a growing part of the national game and we aim to help develop the sport and support clubs and players.'

Patrice Evra votes for Luis Suarez to win PFA Player of the Year... despite Liverpool striker being given ban in racism storm

Patrice Evra has voted for old foe Luis Suarez to win the PFA Player of the Year.

The Manchester United defender accused Suarez of racially abusing him three years ago, with the Uruguayan found guilty and banned for eight games.

Suarez has never apologised for the incident, but that hasn't deterred Evra from casting his vote for the Liverpool striker, report the Sunday Telegraph.

Surprise: Patrice Evra has voted for Luis Suarez for this season's PFA Player of the Year award

The winner will be announced next Sunday, with Suarez the hot favourite to take the gong.

He has scored 29 goals in 29 Premier League games and is the division's top marksman - despite his season not starting until the end of September.

Suarez was ineligible to play for the Reds until then as he was serving a 10-match ban for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic.

Evra is also believed to have also voted for the 27-year-old last season.
Suarez said in February that the racism claims against him in 2011 were false.
'Let me tell you, I've made only two mistakes in my career,' Suarez told Montevideo radio station Sport890 AM.

'My first was when I was playing for Ajax and I bit an opponent (Otman Bakkal). My second was when I bit (Branislav) Ivanovic.'

'The case with Evra was all false. I was accused without proof. But that's in the past.

'I was sad at that moment, but I'm happy today. I have grown up. I have thought more about things before doing them.'

What a gentleman Evra ...., he voted Suarez ..... #respect

Default Re: 2014 PFA Footballer of the Year Award

Should Tony Pulis or Brendan Rodgers Be Manager of the Year?

As the season enters its final weeks, the race for this season’s Manager of the Year award has become nearly as competitive as the battle for the Premier League title itself.

Crystal Palace manager Tony Pulis and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers are the leading contenders and would both be worthy winners of the League Managers Association award this season.

At the start of the season, no one expected Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool to even mount a title challenge, never mind actually win the Premier League.

They finished a distant seventh last season, 28 points behind the champions Manchester United, and even talk about getting into the top four this season seemed fanciful.

But now with just three games remaining, Liverpool are five points clear at the top of the table and the overwhelming favourites to win their first league title for 24 years.

It is unprecedented for any team in the Premier League era to finish seventh and then win the title the following season.

The last time it happened in the top flight was three decades ago when Everton recovered from a seventh-place finish in 1983/84 to win the title the following season.

It would be a remarkable achievement for Rodgers if he were to outflank the immense wealth of Chelsea and Manchester City, and the reigning champions Manchester United.

Despite failing to bring in any major new signings and having an overall net spend of just £16 million last summer, Rodgers’ Liverpool have been a joy to watch this season.

Rodgers has moulded the attacking talents of Daniel Sturridge, Luis Suarez, Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho, Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson into an irresistible force that has so far scored 96 goals in 35 league games this season.

This Liverpool side deserves its success for the bravado and attacking intent Rodgers has instilled in it, especially in recent weeks.

Liverpool have not taken a step back, and as Rodgers recently told the Daily Mail:

Quote:
We’ve dealt with pressure all season by working to get on the ball, to play. Every week we seem to have the question put to us: ‘This is the real test’. But we’ve always passed the tests, City at home, Arsenal at home, Man United at Old Trafford. If it doesn't happen for us this year, it’ll be due to bad luck or a mistake. It won't be because we’re lacking in nerve.
And yet for all Rodgers’ undoubted brilliance, I actually tend to believe the Manager of the Year award should be destined for south-east London rather than Liverpool.

The salvage job Tony Pulis has performed at Crystal Palace this season has simply defied belief.

When the former Stoke manager arrived at Selhurst Park in November to succeed Ian Holloway, Palace were doomed.

They were in the relegation zone with only four points and had lost nine of their first 10 games in the Premier League.

I saw them lose 2-0 to Swansea at Selhurst Park in late September, and they were a rabble, Championship players dangerously out of their depth who played like a collection of strangers.

The club had no culture of staying in the Premier League either, having previously been relegated four times from it after a single season. A fifth relegation appeared inevitable.

When Pulis arrived, Palace harboured no realistic thoughts of staying up. Indeed their only hope seemed to be that they might surpass Derby Country’s unwanted record of winning just 11 points in the 2007/08 season, the lowest-ever Premier League points total.

Now, Crystal Palace are 11th in the table with 43 points and looking forward to a second successive season in the Premier League for the first time in their history.

There will be no drama, no last-day nerves. With three games remaining, they are safe and could feasibly finish in the top half of the table a place behind Manchester United.

This has been a triumph for the art of coaching, for improving players and for all the work Pulis has put in at Crystal Palace’s Beckenham training ground.

Pulis worked to his strengths and made certain Palace became very difficult to score against.

A defensive unit including the hitherto unheralded talents of Julian Speroni, Damien Delaney, Adrian Mariappa, Scott Dann, Daniel Gabbidon and Joel Ward has been the foundation of Palace’s survival and helped secure an impressive 10 clean sheets from 23 games.

Despite their woeful start to the season, Palace can now boast the fifth-best defensive record in the Premier League, better than even league leaders Liverpool or Arsenal.

It might not have been pretty, but it has been incredibly effective.

If Brendan Rodgers brings the Premier League title to Anfield, he deserves to be Manager of the Year, but before that happens, my vote goes to Pulis, as he has already accomplished his aim by achieving the almost impossible and keeping Crystal Palace in the top flight for another season.
