ROJO: TEAM SPIRIT CAN SEE UNITED THROUGH

Marcos Rojo is braced for a difficult rematch against West Ham United tonight but believes a strong team spirit will help Manchester United come through the EFL Cup quarter-final tie.

Having played the whole of Sunday's 1-1 Premier League draw, Rojo is poised to line up in the Reds' defence again when the Hammers return to Old Trafford, this time in a knockout scenario.

The Argentinian senses a real determination in the United camp to win this competition for the first time since 2010, and feels the players' togetherness can help them achieve that goal.

Speaking to United Review before Sunday’s league encounter, Rojo said: "We’re always together and, after training, we have fun just like any other team.

"It’s very important that we’re united off the pitch and pulling in the same direction, as this helps when a game comes around.

"When you have that, you’re united on the pitch without even realising it and everyone works hard for each other and the manager too."

United were left frustrated for the fourth consecutive home league game at the weekend, having dominated proceedings after Zlatan Ibrahimovic cancelled out Diafra Sakho’s early opener.

But though West Ham were indebted to goalkeeper Darren Randolph for limiting the Reds to one goal, they continued to cause problems on the break and at set-pieces themselves, with former Reds striker Ashley Fletcher only denied a late winner by a smart David De Gea save.

Rojo has now faced the East London side five times in his United career, more than any other opposition team, so he is well placed to comment on their threat.

"They are a team that don’t give you anything for free," the 26-year-old continued. "They battle, they’re a physically strong side and they’re aggressive, and they know how they want to play. I’ve never had an easy game against them.

"But this competition is a chance for us to win the first silverware of the season, so we will give our all. It will be a difficult match but hopefully we’ll go through."

Jose Mourinho leaps to defence of Manchester United star Marcos Rojo after Argentine avoids another red card against Crystal Palace

* Manchester United managed to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 on Wednesday night
* Marcos Rojo scythed down forward Wilfried Zaha during the encounter
* Alan Pardew believes the defender should have seen red for his tackle

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho jumped to the defence of fiery Marcos Rojo, insisting the Argentine is a ‘clean player’ after he avoided a red card for a two-footed tackle for the second time in 10 days.

United were lucky not to be down to 10 men in the first half when Rojo went in on Wilfried Zaha but referee Craig Pawson showed only a yellow card.

‘It did look bad,’ said Palace boss Alan Pardew. ‘He jumps two-footed and we go to these meetings (with officials) where (we’re told) that is a red card.’

Marcos Rojo fouled Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha during the first-half at Selhurst Park

Rojo was only shown a yellow card by referee Craig Pawson for his tackle on Zaha. Jose Mourinho leapt to his defence after the match and said he was a 'clean player'

Rojo also escaped after lunging at Idrissa Gueye in United’s 1-1 draw at Everton.

Mourinho, however, defended his man and pointed to bad tackles on United players this season.

‘He’s playing phenomenal,’ said the United boss. ‘He is clean, aggressive, Argentine, emotional, very clean. I didn’t comment (about) David Luiz on Marouane Fellaini or Danny Rose on Henrikh Mkhitaryan. I won’t comment on this.’

But Match of the Day pundit Alan Shearer was adamant, saying: ‘It should have been a red card for Marcos Rojo. You cannot tackle like that. It would have changed the game completely.’

Mourinho paid tribute to 35-year-old Zlatan Ibrahimovic, whose 88th-minute strike ensured United won consecutive league games for the first time since August.

It was the Swede’s 14th goal of the season in all competitions. Mourinho said: ‘I knew the character of Ibra. At his age, he is a character, personality and has the passion to play. I told him England is not the best place for a holiday for a rich guy.

Quote:
GRAHAM POLL: A POOR NIGHT FOR CRAIG PAWSON AND HIS OFFICIALS

Manchester United should have been reduced to 10 men when Marcos Rojo committed a two-footed challenge which only failed to make contact with Wilfried Zaha due to the Palace man’s athleticism in jumping over his studs.

Then United’s first goal should not have been allowed. Paul Pogba was offside from Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s knock-on. To rub salt in the wound, the Swede knocked the ball forward with his arm.

Referee Craig Pawson and his assistants then seemed to try to ‘level things up’. United were denied a clear penalty when Joe Ledley knocked a cross away with his arm. They then had a goal disallowed for offside but neither Rojo, who headed the ball, or Juan Mata, who put it in, were offside. A very disappointing evening for the officials.
'You come for the most difficult league and to prove yourself. His decision was based on that.’

United defender Eric Bailly went off with a knee injury, having only returned to action last week after damaging a knee in October.

Mourinho said: ‘We don’t know (how serious it is). But it is not the same knee.’

ROJO STRIVING FOR MORE SILVERWARE IN 2017

Marcos Rojo is targeting more silverware with Manchester United in 2017 as the Reds aim to end the year with a flourish.

The Argentinian lifted the FA Cup last summer following the extra-time win over Crystal Palace at Wembley and, with Jose Mourinho's men facing ties in three different competitions in the first couple of months of the new year, hopes are high for more glory.

After forcing his way into the side and performing superbly at centre-back, the robust defender is convinced more success is on the horizon.

"I think it's been an interesting year for me," he told MUTV. "Various things happened. I had the FA Cup win at United and then went on to the Copa America. Unfortunately, we [Argentina] weren't able to win that but it was still an important moment for me.

"Now, at this time of the season, at the end of the year, we need to finish strongly and win as many games as possible. Looking towards 2017, we must play as well as we can and, hopefully, why not win a trophy at some point."

Sunderland provide the opposition at Boxing Day and Rojo is relishing the occasion at a packed and festive Old Trafford.

"Obviously, it would be lovely to have a little rest and spend some time with my family but I understand the tradition during this time," he added. "The atmosphere is particularly special in the stadium so it's something I enjoy.

"We have to play as we usually do and be concentrated to not give them anything for free."

ROJO: OUR FANS MAKE THE OPPOSITION SHRINK

Marcos Rojo feels that Manchester United supporters are vehement enough to make opposition teams "appear to shrink a little".

The Argentinian defender talks passionately about the United fans with some first-hand experience - he sat among the travelling faithful during last season's win at Liverpool and this term's draw at Stoke City when Wayne Rooney broke the club's goalscoring record.

Rojo insists the fans' backing has a real effect on the pitch and provides inspiration for the players. He told MUTV: "When the team needs to go all out for the win in the last few minutes of a game, or we need to grab a late goal, it’s great for us to feel that support and you can sense that the opponents feel it too.

"When the fans really get going and are passionately driving us forward and cheering at full blast, you get the feeling that as we put the pressure on, the other team just appear to shrink a little in the face of all this. And you can tell that’s happening when you’re out there playing.

"I had the chance to be in the crowd at Liverpool and at Stoke and I really got to feel for myself just what the United supporters live through every week. It was really great to be in there and hear the passion they put into every song they sing and how they chant the players’ names.

"I had the opportunity to be right in among the fans at the ground to experience and see things for myself from a different angle, if you like, and it was a really cool experience."

Ander Herrera praises injured Manchester United team-mate Marcos Rojo for having 'a lot of balls'

* Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has suffered a serious knee injury
* Argentine centre back Rojo was carried off on a stretcher in Anderlecht tie
* He will play no further part in the campaign following knee ligament injury
* Ander Herrera, who posed for pic with Rojo, says team-mate has 'a lot of balls'

Marcos Rojo hasn't let his season-ending injury affect his mood as the Manchester United defender posed for an upbeat picture with team-mate Ander Herrera.

The Argentine will play no further part in the current campaign after suffering 'significant knee ligament damage' in the Europa League tie with Anderlecht.

But despite the devastating setback suffered last Thursday, Rojo appears in good spirits as Herrera paid him a visit.

Donning a white t-shirt, shorts and a red cap, the 27-year-old Argentina international rested his injured leg on his couch.

The picture was uploaded on Instagram by Herrera, who has been in impressive form for Jose Mourinho's men this term.

He wrote: 'Te vas a recuperar pronto amigo, tienes muchos huevos #crazyhorse ' which translates in English to 'You'll get better soon my friend, you have a lot of balls'.

Rojo has established himself as a first-choice centre back under Mourinho - who also saw Zlatan Ibrahimovic suffer a similar injury during last week's match - and it is a huge blow that both have now been ruled out for the season.

Ander Herrera (left) poses with injured Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo

The injury to Rojo now leaves Mourinho short of options in the heart of his defence, with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling already on the sidelines.

Eric Bailly and Daley Blind are United's only fit senior centre backs heading into the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday.

'We are in trouble,' said Mourinho last week. 'In this moment, Eric Bailly played six matches in a row, and we lost Marcos Rojo. We don't have Jones or Smalling.

'We are in trouble and now we lose Zlatan too. But in attack, we have options and (Wayne) Rooney is coming, and let's see if (Juan) Mata can also return before the end of the season.'

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo hits the weights as he looks to speed up recovery from knee injury

* Marcos Rojo was seen on Ander Herrera's Instagram story lifting in the gym
* The defender is still recovering from knee ligament damage he suffered last April
* Rojo was welcomed back to training last week but is still someway off starting

Jose Mourinho will be pleased to see Marcos Rojo pushing for a return to his Manchester United squad by putting in the hours in the gym.

The Argentinian defender was welcomed back to training last week but didn't seem to overexert himself as he looks to recover from the knee ligament damage he sustained against Anderlecht in the Europa League last April.

The 27-year-old was seen slaving away in the gym in efforts to race back to fitness on Ander Herrera's Instagram story.

Marcos Rojo grits his teeth as he prepares to lift his first rep on the bench press in the gym. The defender extends his arms and lifts the weight with ease as Ander Herrera films him. Rojo manages to fire out three sharp reps before his Spanish team mate stops filming

The defender will be eager to re-establish himself back in Mourinho's first team plans having found regular action last season with 21 league appearances.

But it may be some time before he can work his way back into contention.

United have made a promising start to the Premier League campaign without him so far and Eric Bailly has stood out as a key performer from their opening three games.

Bailly's sudden transformation from a jittery liability to a composed solid defender certainly won't help Rojo's case, but he is proving to Mourinho he is willing to push through the pain barrier in order to force his way back to fitness, which can only strengthen his argument.

The United manager has previously claimed Rojo would have 'no chance' of coming back before December, but it appears that deadline might need revising.

With the international break approaching it would be sensible for the Argentinian to try and recover as much ground as possible by paying another visit to the gym.

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo set to play for the reserves as he continues his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury

* Manchester United's Marcos Rojo has been sidelined with injury since April
* Rojo will return from injury in a reserve team friendly on Wednesday
* The Argentina defender is hoping to play 45 minutes for the reserves

Marcos Rojo will return from injury in a reserve team friendly on Wednesday and could be back in action for Jose Mourinho's side in the final Champions League group tie against CSKA Moscow next month.

Rojo has been sidelined since April when he ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee in the Europa League win over Anderlecht.

The Argentina defender is hoping to play 45 minutes for the reserves as he steps up his rehabilitation, and has set his sights on the CSKA game on December 5 for his first-team return. If all goes well, Rojo cold be available for the Manchester derby at Old Trafford five days later.

He said: 'Tomorrow I am going to play a match with the reserves in a friendly match.

'I feel good. Up until now I have not had any problems but training is not the same as a match so I will play 45 minutes tomorrow for the reserves.

'In three weeks we have a Champions League game that and if all goes well tomorrow I could play in that.'

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo hasn't played since April due to injury. Rojo suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the Europa League game against Anderlecht

Looking further ahead, Rojo hopes to win a place in Argentina's squad for the World Cup after Jorge Sampaoli's side qualified for the finals in Russia against the odds.

He added: 'have to win my place back in the team so that Sampaoli considers me for the World Cup.

'I have been out a while but I am determined to get back into the national team. I want to show Sampaoli how good I am.'

Q&A: ROJO ON FITNESS, CHRISTMAS AND 2018

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo spoke to United Review the week before Christmas, to reflect on his return to fitness, festive food choices and his hopes for 2018...

How does it feel to be back playing after such a long injury lay-off?
I am really happy to be back playing again regularly. It was a long time out so I’m extra happy to be back. All you want to do is to be working hard to so you can be in the squad, in the team to help your team-mates to compete. It’s really tough when you are out for a long time, so it’s great to be back.

Are you improving with each game and getting closer to your level before the injury?

In terms of physical fitness I’m getting there and that’s what you aim for. When you have been out for a long time it’s difficult to be competing 100 per cent at this level because it’s such a demanding level and a demanding style of football and league, but with each game I am noticing that physically I’m getting better. And the most important thing is I am finishing games well, I am feeling good at the end of matches. The actual match fitness takes a little bit longer but again, game by game, I am improving on that level and physically things are going really well.

This is your fourth Christmas playing in English football - how tough a period is it for a player and what’s the best thing about it?
I suppose it’s a bit tough when you know you are going to be out at work when you want to be spending time with your family at home enjoying Christmas, but there is something extra special about playing matches at this time. As soon as you get on the field there is an extra buzz about the place and something extra in the atmosphere. You can tell that the fans are living the whole experience in a different way than just a middle of the season game. The atmosphere is great during the fixtures over the Christmas period and that’s what we all love.

Have you sampled Christmas dinner British style?! What would you go for in Argentina?
Yes I have tried Christmas dinner a few times here in the canteen and really enjoyed it. Our idea of a roast is slightly different in Argentina – it’s the summer this time of the year so you’re having Christmas in a summer atmosphere. We also have roast meat all year in Argentina so it’s a barbecue for Christmas and we tend to celebrate on the 24th in the evening more, that’s when we eat our main meal.

We’ve got Southampton at home and Everton away next – so not very much travelling involved. Is that a good thing?
It helps tremendously, above all for our recovery periods because travelling really tires you out, so I think the fact that we have got two at home and one pretty close by over that period means we can get some rest and hopefully go into those games feeling as fresh as possible.

How much are you looking forward to 2018 with trophies to play for with United and of course the World Cup with your country?
You are right, in the distance we have the World Cup in Russia and that is obviously very important to me as an individual trying to take part in that. But between now and then we have some massive games here with United and I think it’s really important we win our games between now and the end of the year and also that we start strongly in the new year. We want to make 2018 a successful year and hopefully we will be holding some trophies at the end of the season.

ROJO: I'VE FOUND LOVE FOR MANCHESTER

Marcos Rojo is feeling settled at Manchester United after recovering from a knee injury in order to reclaim a place in Jose Mourinho's plans.

The Argentina international joined the club from Lisbon outfit Sporting in 2014 and has made a real impact at centre-back after adjusting to life in the Premier League.

Although an unused substitute at Newcastle United last weekend, he started the previous fixture against Saturday's Emirates FA Cup opponents Huddersfield Town and produced an accomplished display.

In an exclusive interview with the latest edition of Inside United, the official club magazine, the 27-year-old made it clear why he has unfinished business with United and is determined to win the ultimate prize in English football.

When asked what his ambitions are over the course of the next five years, the defender replied: “I feel my thinking in the next few years must be to try to stay as long as I can and to be here at one of the biggest clubs you can be at. My family is really happy to be here and I am also very pleased to be here.

"The challenge in the next few years is to win the Premier League. I don’t want to leave England without winning the title.

“It’s great and I’m very happy here,” he continued. “At first, it’s true it was difficult but it always is difficult getting used to a new city. Now, I’ve found a love for the city. My daughters are very happy here.

”My eldest daughter is at school at the moment so, when I come in to train and work hard, I get home and knowing my wife and daughters are happy contributes to your general feeling.“

Rojo will hope to earn a recall to the starting line-up for the weekend encounter at the John Smith's Stadium as the Reds aim to bounce back from the disappointing result at Newcastle by clinching a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
