'He must have a lot of noise in his ear': Gary Neville suggests contract talks could have played a part in David De Gea's mistake for Arsenal goal

* Manchester United took on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday
* Granit Xhaka gave the Gunners the lead from outside of the box in the first half
* United goalkeeper David de Gea was completely wrong-footed by the strike

David de Gea was at fault for Arsenal's opening goal in Sunday's Premier League clash and Gary Neville believes the player's ongoing contract talks with Manchester United could have been partly to blame.

The Gunners took the lead when Granit Xhaka let fly with a swerving strike from outside the box in the 12th minute.

De Gea was completely wrong-footed by the effort which he should have dealt with had he read the flight of the ball properly.

Gary Neville believes ongoing contract talks could be impacting David de Gea's performances. The Spanish goalkeeper was at fault for Arsenal's opening goal on Sunday afternoon

'The first thing to say when you see a goal like that, is that you think there's been a deflection,' said Neville on Sky Sports.

'But there wasn't one. It was really poor from David De Gea. I'm not sure how to explain that. He hits it well Xhaka.

'He's got a clear sight of it David De Gea. It swerves but I've got no defence for him. It's poor from the goalkeeper.'

'His reaction for me; he went to his left but didn't seem to react when the ball went the other way. He's not been at his best David De Gea this season.'

De Gea's view when Xhaka let fly with his left-footed strike in 12th minute of the match

Jamie Redknapp agreed with his fellow pundit to some extent, adding: 'His body language has been strange and I agree with you Gary he has got to do better.'

However, Neville went on to suggest that the Spaniard's contract stand-off may be impacting his performances.

'All the noise of the contract, said Neville. 'He must have had a lot of noise in his ear.'

David de Gea wants assurances over transfers before committing to new deal at Manchester United

* David de Gea's contract at Manchester United expires in summer 2020
* Spaniard wants to stay despite club's refusal so far to meet his wage demands
* De Gea has privately held concerns over United's recent sporting direction

David De Gea wants reassurances about the club's future transfer policy before committing to a new long-term contract at Manchester United.

The Spanish goalkeeper's contract is set to expire in summer 2020 and the keeper remains minded to stay at Old Trafford despite the club's refusal so far to meet his wage demands and the agent fees of Jorge Mendes.

The club and player are expected to reach a compromise over a wage package worth £350,000-per-week.

David De Gea wants reassurances about Manchester United's future transfer policy. The Spanish goalkeeper's contract at Old Trafford is set to expire in summer 2020

De Gea would prefer to stay at Old Trafford than head to Spain, where Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has considered another bid to prise the keeper to the club.

However, manager Zinedine Zidane is keen to give goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois another year to prove himself at the club, while De Gea himself feels his form and confidence in a Spain jersey has been affected by negative relations with sections of the Spanish media.

De Gea, however, is one of several players who has privately held concerns over United's sporting direction in recent years and particularly a haphazard approach in the transfer market under Ed Woodward.

De Gea has been at the club for eight years and has won only one Premier League. The club have also reached the Champions League quarter-finals only twice in that time.

De Gea and his entourage highlighted these very concerns before he signed his previous contract in 2015 and United have, if anything, deteriorated since.

On that occasion, United were even forced to install Emilio Alvarez, De Gea's preferred goalkeeping coach and a Mendes confidant, to Jose Mourinho's backroom staff.

De Gea is now 28 and this may be his last long-term major contract. He wants assurances that the club will have the structure and ambitions to not only qualify for Champions League football but also challenge for the competition over the next five years.

De Gea's trump card remains Paris Saint-Germain. PSG are prepared to meet his wage demands and De Gea, who has previously been privately dismissive of a move to the French league, is believed to be warming to the move amid United's miserable campaign.

De Gea's personal form has dropped over the past month and he has been at least partially responsible for goals conceded against Arsenal, West Ham, Barcelona and Everton.

David De Gea lets the side down! Manchester United goalkeeper's near-post blind spot undoes all of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's hard work

* De Gea was at fault again in 2-0 derby defeat by Manchester City on Wednesday
* He was beaten at near post for first goal and could have done better with second
* The Spaniard will have to accept criticism of his performance and loss of form

David De Gea has to be doing better. It’s not like Bernardo Silva smashed his shot in at the near-post for the opening goal on Wednesday night. The Manchester United goalkeeper should have done far more to stop Leroy Sane from scoring, too.

De Gea’s looked off the boil this season. After four successive inclusions in the PFA Team of the Year, he is not in the latest edition for 2018-19, and for good reason.

De Gea has made a lot of high-profile errors this season, including the one against Lionel Messi in the Champions League earlier this month.

Ultimately, on Wednesday night, United lost with De Gea at fault for both goals, allowing City to assert the dominance which they have become so used to enjoying in the Premier League this season.

There has been a lot of speculation about the Spanish goalkeeper’s contract situation at Old Trafford.

Are players really taking their eyes off the ball because of such issues? He’s already on £200,000 a week.

If De Gea wants to be paid like a top player, it would help if he started playing like one again.

David De Gea was at fault again in Manchester United's derby defeat at Old Trafford. The Manchester United goalkeeper has looked off the boil and made a lot of high-profile errors

Ederson, the Manchester City keeper, meanwhile, is in the PFA Team of the Year for this season, and he showed why at Old Trafford. Remember when City struggled with Claudio Bravo as their goalkeeper? They have no such issues any more. Ederson is ridiculously good.

The question we were asking ahead of this vital clash in the gripping title race was could Ole Gunnar Solskjaer get a reaction out of his United players after their embarrassing 4-0 capitulation at Everton?

The answer was evident from the opening exchanges — yes he could.

We shouldn’t give United too much credit for that, of course. That’s what these players are paid to do! After what happened at Goodison Park, reacting was the least they could do.

De Gea was beaten at the near post for first goal and could have done better with second goal. The Spaniard will have to accept the criticism of his performance and his loss of form

But the last time City were not leading in a Premier League match by the 15th minute was back on March 9.

Fulham, Cardiff, Crystal Palace and Tottenham have all conceded early goals against Pep Guardiola’s side since then.

Manchester United brought an end to City’s run. How? By taking the game to the visitors instead.

United were very competitive in the first half. The home side were the ones asking all the questions. Fred, in particular, was showing plenty of energy in midfield.

You have to give Solskjaer credit for his team selection. He made five changes and clearly went for players he trusted would put in a shift for him.

The longer the first half went on at Old Trafford, however, we started to see City get more of a foothold in the game.

That was always a danger, and Raheem Sterling will think he should have scored from that chance he had before the break.

City are used to flying out of the traps but they had to grow into this game. Once they did, they made their chances count in the second half.

De Gea will have to accept the criticism of his performance and his loss of form this season. After all the work rate of United’s outfield players, who put in a shift for Solskjaer, they will have been frustrated to end the night at Old Trafford with little to show for their efforts.

The decline of David de Gea: Manchester United keeper's dramatic slump in form is not down to poor technique but a crisis of confidence

* David de Gea is currently going through a dramatic slump in form at Man United
* De Gea's ability to block shots with his feet has been one of his greatest virtues
* At this moment in time, the Spaniard is simply enduring a crisis of confidence
* Unfortunately, his drop in form has coincided with United's poor strike rate

As Leroy Sane's firm strike flicked off the boot of David de Gea at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, some on the United bench might have been transported back to the goalkeeper's troublesome first season at the club.

Those were the days when De Gea was caught pinching doughnuts from his local Tesco and when one national newspaper decided to interview Massimo Taibi to compare the two goalkeepers' starts to life at Manchester United.

For Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's assistant Mike Phelan, the angst may be familiar. He was there, alongside Sir Alex Ferguson, as De Gea toiled badly.

Even on the good nights, Ferguson was exasperated. In a Champions League match against Real Madrid in 2013, De Gea made a series of stunning saves but was unorthodox. 'Can't he use his hands?' Ferguson complained from the dugout.

De Gea's playground style-ability to block shots with his feet has been one of his greatest virtues. Indeed, after a series of saves against Tottenham earlier this season, the social media memes suggested it may be time a goalkeeper rather than a striker received the Golden Boot. Yet out-of-form and off-colour, the virtue is now seen as a vice.

Yet De Gea will not change. As a late teen he persisted with his unique methods, and at United he requested his goalkeeping coach Eric Steele follow some of his students' own feet-based drills.

Over the last eight years he has been United's most consistent source of excellence. The question marks over his technique, therefore, seem harsh. So too do the suggestions he is distracted by the noise surrounding his contract.

David de Gea is currently going through a dramatic slump in form but it isn't down to technique. De Gea made a series of errors at the World Cup and made one save from the 12 shots he faced. De Gea failed to keep out Lionel Messi's second strike in the Champions League at Nou Camp

After all, the vast majority of De Gea's past five years at Old Trafford has been dogged by suggestions he is either on the brink of a move to Real Madrid or stumbling over contract negotiations with United.

Instead, De Gea is simply enduring a crisis of confidence. It can be seen in his hesitation when picking passes, his hand-flapping after yet another goal sneaks in.

During a goalkeeper's career, this can occasionally happen, but De Gea has been at least partially responsible for goals conceded against Arsenal, Wolves, West Ham, Barcelona, Everton and Manchester City over the past six weeks, and it is an alarming slump in form.

The goalkeeper's union will, justifiably, argue that De Gea has credit in the bank and wonder why his strikers have not bailed him out in the way he has spent the past five years sparing their own blushes.

Quote:
DE GEA STAT

De Gea has not kept a clean sheet in his last 12 games. He has managed only seven in the league all season.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has the most clean sheets with 18.
Unfortunately for De Gea, his personal drop in performance has coincided with United scoring just three goals from open play in nine games.

For De Gea, these errors are the shock waves of a distressing World Cup for Spain last summer. He made a series of glaring errors starting from the first match against Portugal and made one save from 12 shots faced at the tournament.

The Spanish media savaged his performance, while De Gea has previously crossed swords with politicians and the printed press in Spain over false allegations about his private life.

The good news for United is that this all makes it more unlikely that Real Madrid will come calling again this summer for De Gea.

Indeed, that Nou Camp mistake for Lionel Messi's goal may have put paid to a Real deal — the wrong place, the wrong time and also the wrong rival to drop your biggest Champions League clanger against.

De Gea's contract expires in the summer of 2020 and Madrid are minded to give Thibaut Courtois another season to prove himself while De Gea's contract stand-off at Old Trafford could well run into next season.

This has been United's position lately. They have refused to countenance selling one of their best players this summer but in light of recent form, the goalposts may shift.

For the first time in a long while, United have a decision to make over De Gea, rather than the other way around.

A more pressing decision could come this weekend if De Gea is dropped for the visit of Chelsea.

Might it be the jolt he needs or would it be wiser to play through the pain?

In the longer term, De Gea has been informed that Paris Saint-Germain are prepared to spend big on both a fee and his £350,000-per-week wage demands this summer, yet the goalkeeper ideally prefers to play in a more competitive domestic league.

De Gea, for his part, remains open to staying at United but wants clear assurances that the club will restructure in a way that makes it possible not only to return to the Champions League but compete to win the competition in the coming years.

At United, they have formidable sources of support for the goalkeeper. De Gea hand-picked his preferred goalkeeping coach, Emilio Alvarez, when Jose Mourinho joined the club as part of his agreement to remain at United.

Alvarez's bond with De Gea goes back a decade to their time together at Atletico Madrid when the goalkeeper was a teenager.

On one occasion during his troublesome first season at United, De Gea even texted Alvarez from the United dressing room at half-time to ask for urgent advice.

Solskjaer clearly thinks the world of De Gea and Phelan was involved in the scouting process to sign him all those years ago. Now the trio must rebuild their goalkeeper's shattered confidence once more.

menurut saya penampilan De Gea juga tidak terlepas dari buruknya lini pertahanan walaupun dibeberapa pertandingan terakhir De Gea juga membuat kesalahan mendasar, kalo kebobolan banyak gini kan jadinya penampilan kiper yg lebih disorot, padahal lini pertahanan itu sepaket kiper + bek, kecuali sering blunder kyk Karius mungkin kalo bukan De Gea lebih banyak lagi kebobolannya. yah semoga kalo jadi perpanjangan kontrak penampilan De Gea membaik musim depan & kita lebih sering melihat #DaveSaves

'The best No 2 in the world!': Man United fans call for Sergio Romero to replace David de Gea after keeper makes ANOTHER error to gift Chelsea their equaliser

* Manchester United drew 1-1 with Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday
* David de Gea made another error which led to an equalising goal for the Blues
* He has not kept a clean sheet in two months and is suffering crisis of confidence
* Many fans believe Sergio Romero should now be given a chance in the side

Manchester United fans have begun to turn on goalkeeper David de Gea after the Spaniard made another error to gift Chelsea their equaliser in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

United took an early lead through Juan Mata but saw it taken away when De Gea made a mess of a long-range shot from Antonio Rudiger shortly before half-time.

It should've been a routine stop but he spilled it out into the path of Marcos Alonso, who managed a smart finish from a tight angle to leave De Gea with egg on his face.

David de Gea made another big error as Manchester United drew with Chelsea on Sunday. De Gea fumbled a shot from Antonio Rudiger and allowed Marcos Alonso to score rebound

It was the latest in a string of gaffes from De Gea over the the past few weeks. He let a poor shot from Lionel Messi past him in the Champions League, and couldn't stop a Leroy Sane goal in the Manchester derby either.

While the majority of the Old Trafford crowd stood by their keeper following Sunday's full-time whistle, chanting his name, many took to social media to express their frustration with his dip in form.

The common theme was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should now give Sergio Romero a chance for the final two games of the season.

'Romero deserves a run in the team,' wrote one fan on Twitter. 'He's never put a foot wrong and would walk into most teams. He's the best No 2 in the world I reckon!'

Most were careful to acknowledge De Gea's contribution during his eight seasons at the club while suggesting that it is perhaps time for him to have a break from the side.

Another supporter wrote: 'He has been an absolutely amazing keeper for United, but perhaps time now to give him a rest and let him rediscover his mojo... we have a more than capable replacement in Argentina international Sergio Romero!'

Some were less sentimental with one simply posting 'drop De Gea for Romero the rest of the season, his head’s gone.'

'He needs to go on holiday': Ian Wright urges Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop David de Gea

* Ian Wright has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to show his ruthless side
* David de Gea has been guilty of three high-profile errors in his last four games
* The Spanish goalkeeper's contract expires at the end of next season

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has urged Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to show his ruthless side and drop goalkeeper David De Gea.

The Spaniard has been guilty of three errors in his last four matches which have resulted in goals, including spilling Antonio Rudiger's shot to allow Marcos Alonso to equalise for Chelsea on Sunday.

De Gea's contract expires at the end of next season and he is the subject of frequent transfer speculation, something Wright feels the club need to sort out.

Wright, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club, believes Solskjaer should consider taking the 28-year-old out of the spotlight.

'If the manager explains everything and tells him face to face why he's leaving him out and giving him a break, that's man-management - and that's what Solskjaer has to do.

'He needs to go on holiday and sort his contract out. Sometimes you have to take someone out the firing line.

David de Gea made his third error in four matches to gift Chelsea an equaliser on Sunday. Ian Wright believes the Manchester United goalkeeper should be taken out of the firing line. Wright has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to drop him in favour of No 2 Sergio Romero. De Gea's deal runs out at the end of next season and he is the subject of frequent speculation

'He's one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he just needs a break. There's a lot going on and he's under a lot of pressure.

'When you look at how United are playing at the moment, putting him in that situation is putting him under more pressure.

'He's made three very uncharacteristic mistakes in a short period. To take him out for a very good understudy (Sergio Romero) isn't a bad thing.
