Fred unveiled by Manchester United in £52m deal as Jose Mourinho hails his 'creative brain and passing vision' (and Fred the mascot plays piano welcome)

* Fred has signed for Manchester United from Shakhtar Donetsk in a £52m deal

Fred has completed his £52million move to Manchester United from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Brazilian was unveiled as a United player on Thursday afternoon and has penned a five-year deal at Old Trafford with the option to extend it by a further year.

United boss Jose Mourinho immediately heaped praise on the midfielder after his transfer was confirmed, saying his 'creative brain and passing vision' were the primary reasons behind his signing.

Fred said: 'This is the biggest club in the world and I am delighted to be a part of it'

Jose Mourinho said the Brazilian's 'passing vision' will give his side 'another dimension'

'Fred will complement our other midfielders' qualities, which we need; his creative brain and passing vision will give us another dimension to our game,' he told the club's official website.

'I am very happy he is joining our club and I believe our players know how important he can be in our team.'

The 25-year-old was announced as a United player in similar fashion to how Alexis Sanchez was back in January on the club's Twitter account.

Fred the mascot was playing the piano before the Brazilian came into shot wearing a United shirt.

The midfielder had already completed the formalities and agreed to move to Old Trafford prior to the World Cup but was waiting on the transfer of international paperwork for it to be finalised.

Fred becomes United's second signing of the summer after the arrival of Portuguese full-back Diogo Dalot earlier this month.

Upon his unveiling, Fred said: 'This is the biggest club in the world and I am delighted to be a part of this amazing team.

'To work with Jose Mourinho, who has won so many trophies in his time as a coach, is an opportunity not to be missed.'

Fred scored 15 goals in 155 appearances during his five-year stint at Ukrainian side Shakhtar, helping them win three league titles, three Ukrainian Cups and four Ukrainian Super Cups.

He is currently on duty with Brazil at the World Cup in Russia but has yet to feature for Tite's side.

Quote:
HOW FRED WILL FIT IN AT UNITED

Where does Fred play and what type of player is he?

Asked to describe his manner of playing a couple of years ago, Fred put it rather nicely: 'I am a conductor.'

Well, the United orchestra has been out of tune for some time under Mourinho and they'll hope and pray Fred is the midfield virtuoso that can get them back on song next season.

He is commonly described as a box-to-box midfielder, a dynamic player who offers both defensive and offensive attributes, a disruptor and a creator rolled into one.

Mourinho has signed a versatile asset - Fred was originally a left back before being converted into midfield when he signed for Internacional in his homeland in 2011.

Because he is comfortable on both feet, Fred had been deployed as an attacking midfielder at times during his career before settling into a central or deeper midfield role.

The most important thing for United is that he is quick to spark attacks by carrying the ball from defence and feeding the attacking players.

They have been crying out for something like this for a while - all too often last season United were sluggish breaking forward, allowing opponents to track back and regroup.

Fred's speed of both feet and thought, plus his passing range, should help United be speedier in their transitions from front to back next season.

What are Fred's strengths?

We've already mentioned versatility, speed in transition and passing capability with both feet.

Naturally as a Brazilian, he boasts plenty of technical ability and can beat an opponent on the dribble, while another key attribute is that Fred possesses plenty of stamina to fulfil the box-to-box job.

Mourinho will also be satisfied that Fred can put in a defensive shift if United find themselves under the cosh.

At Shakhtar, he earned the trust of coach Paulo Fonseca, who allowed him to freely perform both the defensive and offensive duties of a midfielder.

It remains to be seen if Mourinho, who often puts the tactical straitjacket on his players, will give him such liberty.

Funnily enough, Fred revealed in 2016 that his role model was compatriot Fernandinho, who will of course play across town at Manchester City next season.

But actually a better comparison might be with Chelsea's N'Golo Kante in terms of that box-to-box stamina, adaptability and dynamism. If he turns out to be a Kante, United fans will be pretty chuffed.

And what about his weaknesses?

He only stands 5ft 7in tall, so don't expect Fred to be winning too many headers.

But he more than makes up for that in terms of tenacity - he was Shakhtar's most prolific tackler in the Champions League last season with an average of 2.9 per game (Kante's average was 3.3).

However, United should be wary that this tenacity can sometimes spill over into ill-discipline. He received 14 yellow cards and one red in 29 games for the Ukrainian side last season.

The other concern is that while Fred has played 39 European matches for Shakhtar, the Ukrainian Premier League isn't exactly at the same standard of the Premier League.

United fans may have to be patient while the Brazilian gets up to speed next season, especially as he'll probably be entering the campaign off the back of a lengthy run at the World Cup in Russia.

How will he fit into a 4-3-3 system at United?

Mourinho went with a 4-3-3 formation in a good number of United's matches last season and this would appear to be the best solution when it comes to accommodating both Fred and Paul Pogba in the midfield.

He would play either in the middle or on the right of the midfield three alongside Nemanja Matic, with Pogba stationed on the left.

Some of Pogba's best performances for United have come from this left-sided station and potentially Fred could offer the answer when it comes to belatedly getting the best out of the Frenchman at United.

The key is in the link-up and transition between the deep-lying Matic and the rampaging Pogba, plus a forward line of Jesse Lingard, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku further on.

There should be a good balance about United's midfield with Fred aiding Matic in the defensive responsibilities when required and then springing Pogba.

The idea is that the speed of these transitions will give United the thrust going forward they have so often lacked under Mourinho.

How will he fit into a 4-2-3-1 system at United?

In certain games, Mourinho will revert to the tried and trusted 4-2-3-1, with Fred likely to sit in alongside Matic in defensive midfield.

This would be a more conservative role, with opportunities to break forward more limited, but Fred is certainly capable of the tactical discipline Mourinho would want with this set-up.

One of the chief criticisms of Pogba - and a reason why the youngster Scott McTominay was drafted in for big games last season - was that he lacked this discipline and would over-complicate things.

Problem is, it's now hard to see how they all could be accommodated in this formation and Pogba could well be seeing more of the United bench.

Reason being that United have so many decent attacking options Pogba wouldn't slot in.

Who is going to make way?

In the 4-3-3, the man who looks like he has the most to lose is Ander Herrera.

The Spaniard was drafted in to try to solve the Pogba conundrum but, though his passing is excellent, he struggles in the midfield battle.

Fred has a far greater dynamism in this regard - he's also quicker, more skilful, more tenacious and more attack-minded - so you have to fear for Herrera.

Mind you, given the sheer volume of matches United will have to get through domestically and in the Champions League next season, plus the inevitable injuries and suspensions, Herrera will no doubt still feature at times.

Is Fred the man to get the best out of Pogba?

Having spent two seasons trying to figure out the Pogba equation, Mourinho will certainly hope that is the case.

As explained, Fred should have the attributes to fit in as the link-man between Matic and Pogba, theoretically allowing the £89m man to forget defensive duties and concentrate on aiding United's attack.

It may take a few matches, a few months even, for Fred and Pogba to get used to playing alongside one another. They may well thread on each other's toes at first.

What Mourinho should have here is the ideal man to bring the best out of Pogba in an attacking sense. If that doesn't happen, then United may have to cut their losses.

ROBSON: FRED WILL ADD CREATIVITY TO OUR MIDFIELD

Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson believes new signing Fred will add an extra dimension to the Reds' midfield next season.

The club confirmed the Brazilian's move from Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday.

Robson, who made 461 appearances for the Reds between 1981 and 1994, and is the longest-serving captain in the club’s history, expects our new acquisition’s qualities to bring more balance to the side.

“I think everybody was saying that we just needed a bit more mobility and a little bit more creativity in that midfield area,” suggested United’s former no.7.

“Fred definitely gives you that. He’s been very good for Shakhtar, so hopefully he can take to the Premier League and do really well for United.”

Fred made 37 appearances for Shakhtar last term, and played every minute of their eight Champions League matches. The left-footed midfielder, 25, particularly impressed during the group stage, when they became the first side to beat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in 2017/18.

Robson himself is very familiar with Brazilian players, having signed two high-profile stars, Juninho and Emerson, while manager of Middlesbrough in the 1990s. The man affectionately known as 'Captain Marvel' explained that, in his experience, footballers from the South American nation typically possess great determination.

“I didn’t have any difficulties with them [Juninho and Emerson],” recalled Robbo. “Brazilians are tough characters, and mentally tough. The thing in Brazil is, if you don’t prove yourself in Europe, you’re not really a top-class player - that’s why they all like to come across to Europe and prove themselves.

“So I’m sure Fred, coming from Ukraine to the Premier League, will be tough enough and ambitious enough to want to do really well for United. I don’t think there will be any problems setting in as far as he’s concerned.”

Fred is currently with Brazil at the World Cup in Russia, and could be involved today (Friday) against Costa Rica, but will join Jose Mourinho’s squad later this summer ahead of the 2018/19 season.

He is set to become the seventh Brazilian to play for United’s first team, following in the footsteps of 2002 World Cup winner Kleberson, Anderson, Rodrigo Possebon, Rafael and Fabio da Silva, and Andreas Pereira.

'Fred is going to be SOME player for us': Manchester United fans praise performances of £52m new boy during difficult pre-season campaign

* Manchester United finished tough pre-season with 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich
* Fred gave another assured performance for the Red Devils at the Allianz Arena
* New signing has attracted plenty of kind words for his displays since arriving
* Fans excited over potential midfield with Fred, Andreas Pereira and Paul Pogba

Manchester United may have endured a difficult pre-season campaign in many respects, but the performances of one new signing have at least gone some way to lifting a bit of that gloom.

United parted with £52million in June to make Frederico Rodrigues de Paula Santos - better known as Fred - their most high-profile summer recruit to date and the former Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder has wasted little time in making a positive impression.

After returning from the World Cup, where he did not play a single minute for quarter-finalists Brazil, Fred made his first appearance for United in a heavy 4-1 defeat to rivals Liverpool last month before starting in the final United States tour match against Real Madrid.

Fred continued to impress during Manchester United's defeat to Bayern Munich on Sunday. The new Brazilian recruit's summer performances have been highlight of difficult pre-season. Fred has made three appearances since returning from a disappointing World Cup campaign. Supporters are excited about a midfield containing Fred, Andreas Pereira and Paul Pogba

He impressed primarily with his composure in possession and passing vision during that 2-1 victory in Miami and retained his place for Sunday's clash with Bayern Munich, playing 79 minutes as a youthful side were beaten 1-0 at the Allianz Arena.

Fred once again received plenty of plaudits throughout that tie settled by Javi Martinez's second-half header and his displays throughout the last few weeks - coupled with the encouraging form of Andreas Pereira and imminent return of Paul Pogba - have led fans to dream of a midfield to one day potentially rival any in Europe.

'So, so clean on the ball. Fred is going to be some player for us,' said one supporter during the defeat to Bayern.

Last week, another stated: 'Fred, Pereira and Pogba could be the best midfield trio in Europe.'

Fred looks likely to make his competitive debut for Jose Mourinho's United on Friday evening as they open the 2018-19 Premier League campaign against Leicester City at Old Trafford.

World Cup-winner Pogba is due to resume training later this week, while Sportsmail recently reported that Mourinho wants to give Pereira a chance to prove his worth this term following some eye-catching displays on that ill-fated US trip.

The 22-year-old academy graduate was previously sent to La Liga for successive season-long loan spells at Granada and Valencia.

HOW A BRAZIL LEGEND HELPED FRED JOIN UNITED

Manchester United new boy Fred has explained the part a former Arsenal and Brazil star played in his summer transfer to Old Trafford.

The midfield recruit from Shakhtar Donetsk, who made his first two competitive appearances for the Reds in the Premier League games against Leicester City and Brighton & Hove Albion, revealed how he sought the advice of his fellow countryman Gilberto Silva.

Former Gunners favourite Gilberto arrived in North London from Atletico Mineiro in August 2002, just a few weeks after winning the World Cup with Brazil, and he was part of Arsenal's 'Invincibles' side who were unbeaten in the entire 2003/04 league season.

He had some titanic tussles with Sir Alex Ferguson's United team during his six-year stay in the capital and was on the winning side when Arsene Wenger's men beat the Reds on penalties in the 2005 FA Cup final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Of course, such a strong adversary received a great deal of respect from the United ranks and Fred says this was reciprocated by his 41-year-old mentor.

“Gilberto was a top midfielder who played for Arsenal,” Fred told ManUtd.com. “But he has a lot of respect for Manchester United, who are obviously a big club here in England.

“He praised the club a lot and, after he was granted the opportunity to speak to Jose Mourinho and other senior figures at United, we made the decision together for me to come here. We decided it would be a good move for me.

“Gilberto is a top guy and his advice means a lot to me. He played in the same position as I do and he won the Premier League, so I look to him for inspiration, I listen to what he has to say and I take on board what he tells me.”

'BRAZILIANS ARE BORN WITH A PASSION FOR FOOTBALL'

Fred became the first Manchester United player for six years to wear the iconic yellow jersey of Brazil when he started Saturday's friendly win over USA in New Jersey.

Here, in this interview first published in United Review, the Reds' summer signing from Shakhtar Donetsk discusses his pride at representing one of the world's most respected national teams and the Brazilian players he idolised before following in their footsteps.

HOMELAND HEROES
“I’ve watched loads of great players, but in my opinion the best players I’ve ever seen are not just my heroes, but heroes for all Brazilians. I’d say Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Romário are my favourite three players from the national team. The best Brazil side I’ve ever seen was the one that won the World Cup in 2002.”

NATURAL-BORN PLAYERS
“Like many people say, Brazil is the country of football – many kids there are sent to footballing schools by their parents; it’s as if they’re born with that passion to play the game. Brazil has so many talented players, there are some great ones coming through right now, and there are some who are already at the top of their game, like Neymar and Philippe Coutinho. I think football is in the blood of all Brazilians.”

REPRESENTING THE SELEÇÃO
“It’s an honour to wear the Brazil shirt, one which so many other talented players have worn. I’m really happy to have been involved in a World Cup, and I hope I can carry on doing my best with Brazil, wearing the famous yellow shirt. It’s a dream come true for me, and I hope I can keep playing for Brazil for many years to come.”

RUSSIA 2018 AND BEYOND
“Unfortunately, I suffered an injury in the lead-up to the World Cup. I wanted to play in the World Cup – I think if I had been 100 per cent fit I could’ve played. But it was an incredible experience, just to be involved with the national team in a World Cup, like so many other players and legends had done so before me. It was an honour for me, and like I said I want to be involved in World Cups in the future. I’ll keep working hard here at Manchester United so that the manager keeps picking me for the national team.”

UNITED'S OTHER BRAZILIANS
“I don’t know Rafael and Fabio, but Anderson is a really lively guy, a really cheerful guy. That’s what Brazilians are like – we’re always having a laugh, we’re always smiling, and my aim is to bring this spirit into the dressing room and onto the pitch, to play with a smile on my face. This helps for me settling in, and the football side of things too.”

WHY FRED WEARS 17
“I’ve always liked the number 17 – I think it goes back to my childhood in Brazil, when I’d wear number 7 or 17. I ended up becoming quite attached to this number, but it has no special meaning, it’s just a number I like a lot, and I’m sure I’ll do well with this number.”

Fred: Wajar Ada Tuntutan Besar di Manchester United
Lucas Aditya - detikSport

Rumor pemecatan Jose Mourinho pun lantas menyeruak.

Default Re: Fred

FRED EXCLUSIVE: HOW I'M ADAPTING TO ENGLISH LIFE

It's always tough for new arrivals to adapt to the Premier League but a solid start from Fred has helped the midfielder settle in - both on and off the pitch.

The Brazilian international recently spoke to us about his first steps into football back home, his heroes in the English game and how he's finding life in his new surroundings...

How was it growing up in Brazil?
I was really happy during my childhood in the area where I grew up. I had many friends in the neighbourhood, always playing football in the streets. My father signed me up for football training when I was only four and my grandfather also used to take me. My family have always supported me to develop my football. When I was 10 I started playing for Atletico Mineiro and that was the start of my professional career. I played for Atletico and Internacional and then moved to Ukraine with Shakhtar Donetsk. My family supported me a lot and I'm very thankful for them. They were always by my side supporting my dream - it was their dream, too. And today I'm here in Manchester, in this country that is so different to Brazil and Belo Horizonte but I'm adapting well. My first son is going to be born here. I like this country a lot and I hope I can stay here for many years.

You then went on to score your first professional goal against Atletico, for Internacional...
It was such a mixture of feelings. I was very emotional and happy, to understand that I was now a professional. My first goal as a professional and against the club I used to play for and had supported since I was a kid. All of my family support Atletico. On top of that, it was in my city, Belo Horizonte. My family were all there in the stadium - it was amazing. I was really happy with that goal and it was also against Ronaldinho, someone I admire a lot. Unfortunately we lost the game but it still gave me a lot of happiness.

Did you watch English football when you were growing up?
Yes, I always watched a lot of English football. It has always been really strong. I use to watch United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal, when Gilberto Silva used to play there. I have many idols like Gilberto, Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes - many great players that have been here as well.

Do you know any of the other Brazilian players who live in Manchester? Have you done anything with them since you arrived?
My wife talks a lot with Fernandinho and Ederson's wives. For the players, the fixtures and training schedules are very different so we end up not having time. I hang out more with the United squad - Andreas Pereira and the players who speak Spanish. Even those who speak English. We meet after work to play video games and have dinner. It is important for the team. Paul Pogba, Andreas, Eric Bailly... we are close friends.

What do you do when you are homesick?
I do a lot of FaceTime. I'm always calling my family and friends from Brazil. What I miss the most is being around them. My mother, my father, my grandmother - I call them quite a lot. Brazilian food also helps a lot when I'm homesick. We are always cooking rice, beans, steak and farofa [a toasted flour dish] at my house.

Can you tell us a bit about the different weather in Brazil, compared to Ukraine and England?
The weather in Brazil is the best. It's hot! I'm from Minas so I was raised in the hot weather. To get out of this situation to go to a cold place... actually, I left Minas to go to Porto Alegre in the south of Brazil where it's cold, so I adapted a little. Then I went to Ukraine and it was an extreme change. I got to experience -20 °C and for me... I can't even explain how that feels. So here in Manchester, it's great! Sometimes I train in shorts while everyone is in long pants and gloves. It's funny. I've been through worse so I guess I'm used to this now.

How are you adapting to speaking English?
I managed to do some classes in Ukraine but people there didn't really speak English. They spoke Russian so that's what I learned there. I didn't get to practise much English but now I'm here and I'm going to classes. I want to learn as quickly as possible because I know it will help me to integrate and adapt here. I already know a lot of sentences, many words - “How are you?” I know how to communicate. I'm studying so hopefully I will be better in no time.

How was learning to drive in England?
The first time I got a car it felt really different to drive on the opposite side. In other countries it's different and here the “right” side seems weird. On the first day when I arrived during pre-season, I went to the training ground and they left a car for me to drive to the hotel. I had to figure it out and learn. Now it's okay, I've adapted to that and slowly I will adapt even more.

Is it true you suffer from sleep walking?
One of my brothers used to say that when I was sleeping I would say things, as if I was playing football. He said that I used to scream, especially when there was a final coming up with school, and I would wake up telling him to pass the ball, to shoot at the goal. I never realised.

If you could give your younger self any advice, what would it be?
I don't think I would give any advice. When we are kids we live without thinking about the consequences. We do things our own way, we make mistakes but those are all lessons to learned. If, when I was I child, I hadn't done the right and wrong things I've done I wouldn't be here today.

FRED RECALLS 'AMAZING' CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DEBUT

Manchester United midfielder Fred has been sharing his fond early memories of playing in the UEFA Champions League, ahead of this week's mouthwatering clash with Juventus at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian made 30 appearances (including six qualifiers) in Europe's premier club competition for former side Shakhtar Donetsk, including a 1-0 defeat to the Reds at the Theatre of Dreams back in December 2013.

Recalling his debut, a 2-0 triumph against Real Sociedad, Fred said: “It was sensational. We used to play the Champions League video game, so to be able to play in the competition with Shakhtar, to listen to that famous music, this time in the stadium... for me, it was an amazing feeling.

“It brings back all the memories from when I started, all the help my family gave me when I was growing up. To be able to play in the Champions League made me really happy - even happier because we won that match.”

Fred spent five years at Shakhtar after joining from Brazilian outfit Internacional, winning three league titles and three Ukrainian Cups. He made an immediate impact with a brace on his debut against Chornomorets Odesa, helping to clinch the 2013 Ukrainian Super Cup.

“Internacional didn't want to let me go but there were a lot of Brazilians at Shakhtar. They used to tell me the club was great and it was growing a lot so I decided to take this step and I was very happy there.

”In the beginning there will always be an adaptation process. To move from Brazilian football to Europe is really different. I managed to score these two goals in my first game but then I didn't play for a while. It was hard to adapt to the cold and very different but I did adapt. I was really happy during my five years at Shakhtar and I have a lot to thank them for.“

'Does he look like what you would expect for £60 million?': Gary Neville claims Manchester United midfielder Fred is not living up to his price tag

* Fred was Manchester United's major piece of summer transfer business
* But the Brazilian has made only three starts for the club since August
* He was an unused substitute in the 3-1 derby defeat by Manchester City

Gary Neville believes Manchester United midfielder Fred is struggling to live up to the £60m fee Jose Mourinho splashed out on the Brazilian in the summer.

The 25-year-old was the club's major piece of transfer business in the summer but has tailed off after a bright start to life at Old Trafford.

Fred has made only three starts since August and was an unused substitute in the 3-1 Manchester derby defeat at the Etihad on Sunday.

And Neville has questioned whether he has what it takes to justify the significant price tag.

'Fred at £60 million, he started the first game of the season and he looked bright, he looked tidy - but does he look like what you would expect for £60 million?', he said on the Gary Neville Podcast.

'Does he change a game? Does it look like he's going to defend your goal? Does it look like he's going to connect back-to-front? At this moment in time, no.''

Neville concedes though that Fred has room for development and is still adapting to a difficult situation at Old Trafford, with United down in eighth in the table.

'But he's still developing, he's still getting used to Manchester United and he's coming into a very difficult position in the sense that the club aren't the most stable at this moment in time in terms of their performance levels and the scrutiny that's been on the club in the past three or four months,' he added.

'So, I wouldn't put it all onto Fred but you have to ask the question, where was he [on Sunday] in that central midfield?'
