Re: [2016/17] EFL Cup matches
KEY STATS: UNITED IN THE LEAGUE CUP Manchester United will be aiming to win the League Cup for a fifth time when the Reds face Southampton at Wembley on Sunday, having last lifted the trophy in 2010. Victory in this weekend's showpiece match would be the perfect way to cap what is the club's 50th year of participation in the competition, with Jose Mourinho's men determined to see off the Saints. The Reds have a rich history in the League Cup, as you can see from these key facts and figures from years gone by... 5 - That's how times we've played Sunday's opponents, Southampton, in the League Cup, losing just once. This weekend's match will be the first in the competition between the sides since a 3-2 win for United in January 1991. 7 - Michael Owen netted seven League Cup goals in as many appearances during his time at Old Trafford. Of the players to have made more than five appearances, only Carlos Tevez, who scored six in six, has the same strike-rate. 8 - The Reds have reached the League Cup final on eight occasions, winning four times. Six of those finals have been played at Wembley, and two at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. 9 - The number of goals scored during our biggest-ever League Cup win. Gordon Hill netted a hat-trick as the Reds beat Newcastle 7-2 in October 1976. 17 - Former United attacker Norman Whiteside remains the youngest scorer in League Cup final history - he was just 17 years, 324 days old when he found the net against Liverpool in 1982/83. 19 - United's top scorer in the competition is Brian McClair, with 19 goals between 1987 and 1998. 50 - This season, United are participating in the League Cup for the 50th time. We first entered the competition in 1960/61, when we were knocked out by Bradford in the second round. 51 - Bryan Robson's appearance total in the League Cup which is more than any other player for United, ahead of Brian McClair (45) in second and Ryan Giggs (41) in third. 191 - The number of games we've played in the League Cup going into this weekend's final. Of those, the Reds have managed 110 wins, 30 draws and 51 defeats, which equates to a win percentage of 57 per cent. 338 - The Reds have scored a massive 338 goals in the competition, and have a goal difference of +127. Not bad! 2010 - In retaining the trophy with victory over Aston Villa in 2010, United became the first club to do so since Nottingham Forest in 1990. 99,304 - United's highest attendance in the competition came in our first-ever League Cup final, against Liverpool at Wembley in 1983. Re: [2017/18] Carabao Cup (EFL Cup) matches
The League Cup is now known as the Carabao Cup and the first round draw will take place in Bangkok... with the help of ex-Gunner Emmanuel Petit
* The EFL Cup is now sponsored by Thai energy drink company Carabao * The first-round draw will be held in Bangkok with the help of Emmanuel Petit * Clubs and supporters will be able to watch the draw on a live stream on June 16 * Some fans have mocked the news and accused the EFL of 'selling out to anyone' The EFL have attracted scorn from supporters after announcing that the draw for the new-look Carabao Cup will take place in the Thai capital of Bangkok. 70 teams will learn their fate for the first round via a live stream from Thailand on June 16 at 1pm UK time, where former Arsenal and France midfielder Emmanuel Petit will be the special guest for the draw. Thailand is the home of the competition's new sponsors Carabao, who are famed for their popular energy drink. They are also currently a 'principal partner' of Premier League champions Chelsea and Championship side Reading. The draw for the new-look Carabao Cup first round will take place in Bangkok on June 16 And they will now follow the likes of Worthington and Carling in adding their name to the knockout competition, with the partnership due to run until 2020. The EFL wrote that: 'The newly named Carabao Cup offers a significant opportunity for the Thai brand to engage with football fans via its association with one of the biggest football competitions in the country, and Carabao plans to bring this partnership to life at every opportunity for customers and consumers.' But the news that the draw for the competition will take place nearly 6000 miles from Wembley has attracted a mixture of mockery and anger among some supporters. The EFL have been accused of 'selling out' in choosing Carabao as their sponsors while, on hearing the news, one fan asked if he had 'awoken from coma into a parallel universe'. It is not the first time the draw for the League Cup has taken place away from these shores, however. In 1991, current US president Donald Trump joined Ian St John and Jimmy Greaves in New York to help with the draw for the fifth round of the then-named Rumbelows Cup. The first round matches will take place on the week beginning August 7. On offer in the second round is a potential clash with those Premier League clubs not competing in Europe. Manchester United beat Southampton in the final of the EFL Cup earlier this year in front of 85,000 fans at Wembley. Code:

Re: [2017/18] Carabao Cup (EFL Cup) matches
Manchester United and Chelsea handed Championship opponents in Carabao Cup third-round after bizarre early morning Beijing draw
* The third-round of the Carabao Cup has been drawn during a Beijing ceremony * Sponsorship saw the draw for the English competition bizarrely done in Beijing * Defending champions Manchester United will host Burton at Old Trafford * Chelsea will face Nottingham Forest while Arsenal have drawn Doncaster * Liverpool will travel to Leicester and Manchester will City meet West Brom Manchester United and Chelsea were handed Championship opponents in the third-round of the Carabao Cup, following a bizarre 4am draw for the English competition which took place in Beijing. Defending champions United see Burton Albion in their path, and will host the Brewers at Old Trafford, while Chelsea have been tasked with overcoming Nottingham Forest. League One side Doncaster Rovers will arrive at the Emirates stadium, hoping to cause an upset for Arsene Wenger's Arsenal side who are desperate to start picking up silverware once more. Manchester City, well known to West Brom for their recent pursuit of star defender Jonny Evans, will come up against the Baggies in a Hawthorns showdown. Elsewhere Liverpool will travel to Leicester while Everton face last season's relegated side Sunderland and Tottenham prepare to host either Barnsley or Derby County. The bizarrely timed Carabao Cup draw has served up the ties for the competition's third round. The bizarre decision to host the draw in Beijing came on request of cup sponsors Carabao All fixtures are set to take place week commencing Monday, September 18. This was the stage when the big boys came to play, with last season's European qualifying teams entering proceedings. Many English football fans will have been fast asleep as the balls were plucked out of the basket, with the draw taking place at 4.15am BST due to it's Beijing location. With the frighteningly early start for UK viewers pencilled in, the draw didn't officially get rolling until the 4.40am mark, at which point dedicated fans had to resort to following live updates via the cup's official Twitter account, with no television or online coverage offered. The bizarre timing of the event came as a result of the tournament sponsors - Thai energy drinks giant Carabao - wishing to promote the competition in the Asian market, thus expecting their reach. This was something defended by the EFL, who approved the plan as a market growing opportunity bringing positive measures for the profile of the tournament. Last season's winners Manchester United must overcome Burton Albion to defend their trophy 'Our decision to go to China is part of a strategic plan to grow the EFL internationally and specifically boost profile and exposure in ASEAN markets. A number of potentially significant meetings are being held around the draw that we envisage will deliver a benefit to all 72 clubs of the EFL,' the EFL had said. 'As part of those meetings the EFL will stage its first summit in Asia, where potential sponsors and investors from the region will gather to be briefed on the wider opportunities the EFL can provide,' the statement added.
