Gary Neville taunts Liverpool as Manchester United veteran blasts: You deserved to be booted out of the Champions League

Gary Neville has taunted arch rivals Liverpool by insisting they deserved to be dumped out of the Champions League.

The Merseyside giants are coming to terms with being knocked out this week. Liverpool beat Debrecen on Tuesday but poor results earlier in the campaign meant Fiorentina's win over Lyon sealed their exit.

Is Benitez the man to save Liverpool? Liverpool suffered a humiliating early exit from the Champions League on Tuesday night as their season goes from bad to worse. The Reds are already well off the pace in the race for the Barclays Premier League but the board insist he will not be sacked. Is Rafa the man to save the club, or should someone else be brought in?

Manchester United veteran Neville, who has openly admitted his hatred towards Liverpool, reckons they only have themselves to blame.

The nature of the group system means Liverpool could end up with exactly the same number of points as United, who lost their 23-match unbeaten home record in the competition to Besiktas on Wednesday night.

Indeed, the Red Devils could lose to Wolfsburg in Germany next month and still finish top of Group B if CSKA Moscow beat Besiktas to complete a three-way tie United will edge.

'As a team, you get what you deserve don't you?' said Neville. 'We are where we are because we deserve to be there and it's the same with Liverpool.

'We went out ourselves a few years back. They just haven't performed well enough in the Champions League to get the results.'

Not that Neville is spending too much time gloating. He understands United should have beaten Besiktas given their dominance of possession.

Instead, Besiktas took the spoils thanks to Rodrigo Tello's first-half effort, the hosts' young strikeforce unable to fashion a reply despite carving out a succession of chances and Michael Owen failing to do any better when he was introduced late on.

'I am extremely disappointed,' said Neville. 'We didn't convert our chances and didn't do enough in the last third.

'Their goal set us back a little bit. It gave them something to hang on to but usually we would expect to score a goal in 95 minutes at Old Trafford. We just didn't manage it.'

Neville was at least able to get some match action under his belt after being forced to complete a three-game suspension for his dismissal in the Carling Cup win at Barnsley.

There may still be some who feel the 34-year-old is not the force of old. But his experience is vital, especially in such a young starting line-up and with injuries placing major doubts over Jonny Evans and John O'Shea for Saturday's trip to Portsmouth, Neville is expected to keep his place at Fratton Park.

'I have been fit through the period I have been suspended so it has been frustrating,' he said. 'I would have liked to come back into a winning team but we have to move on. We have a game on Saturday and we have to pick ourselves up and get a win there.'

Neville: Liverpool Pantas Tersingkir

(AP)

This place is an institution, a religion, and it needs dealing with in its own right
-sport.co.uk-

Manchester United captain Gary Neville has urged Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad to focus all their efforts on overhauling Chelsea’s five point lead at the top of the Premier League table. The Old Trafford veteran believes the club must be in a position to overtake Carlo Ancelotti’s side by the end of January, and with international commitments out of the way for the time being, Neville suggested Manchester United must be the be all and end all for the foreseeable future.

Neville told The Daily Mirror: “This place is an institution, a religion, and it needs dealing with in its own right every week,”

“You can't be focusing on other things. You get found out quickly here if you get distracted.”

“We're here to win titles every season and the fact we've got 18 is irrelevant. If we had 15, we'd want 16. We have 18 so we want 19.”

“Now the internationals are out of the way we can focus on what we have to do here.”

“We've got to position ourselves better come January and February – because that's when the real charge starts.”

Neville – kids must get tough
-unitedrant.co.uk-

Manchester United’s captain Gary Neville has urged the club’s youngsters to toughen up if they are to make it. Neville, famed for the work ethic and personal drive that took the right-back from the United youth side to the top of the world game, has called Old Trafford a ‘tough school’ for youngsters trying to make it at Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.

“You don’t get too much said to you by the senior players, to be honest. You have to do it yourself,” United’s captain told The Daily Mirror.

“You do get help on the pitch, but it’s a tough school here and you’ve got to make your own mark. As a young player you’ve got to take your opportunities when they come along.

“The young players know the expectations. The fans let you know what those are. The manager does, too. You are surrounded by it all the time at Old Trafford.”

United’s younger players including Federico Macheda, Danny Welbeck, Darron Gibson, Gabriel Obertan, Anderson and the da Silva brothers will play against Tottenham in the Carling Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford tomorrow night. But there are concerns over the attitude of some young players – particularly Macheda, who allegedly had a training ground confrontation with Anderson.

“This place is an institution, a religion, and it needs dealing with in its own right every week,” Neville added.

“You can’t be focusing on other things. You get found out quickly here if you get distracted. We’re here to win titles every season and the fact we’ve got 18 is irrelevant. If we had 15, we’d want 16. We have 18 so we want 19.”

Neville Dicibir Juri Reality Show

GARY NEVILLE: TITLE RACE STILL ON
-dailystar.co.uk-

GARY NEVILLE says recent results prove that the Premier League title race will be one of the most open for years.

The Manchester United skipper said: “I’ve been saying all along that it’s not a two-horse race – it can change so quickly.

“We’ve dropped points, Chelsea have dropped points, and it can close up at the top very quickly.”

United crashed to their fifth defeat – boss Sir Alex Ferguson always reckons that is the limit if a team is to take the title – at Fulham on Saturday.

And leaders Chelsea failed to cash in by only drawing with West Ham on Sunday.

With Liverpool’s title hopes in tatters, the top of the table is taking on a different look and Neville reckons there are new challengers whose threat is real.

“I think the Premier League is getting stronger, with teams like Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and

Villa spending a lot of money,” Neville said.

“But it’s always been the case that all teams can beat one another in England.”

That fact was underlined by Fulham’s second home victory over United in successive seasons, and Neville admitted: “We didn’t expect to lose against Aston Villa last week, but we have to hand it to Villa, first and foremost.

“It’s hard to say at this early stage if Villa could challenge for the league. They don’t have the pedigree of winning championships, but that’s not to say they can’t last the distance. They are in a good position at the moment."

Manchester United ace Gary Neville tells Chelsea to stop moaning about African stars
-mirrorfootball.co.uk-

Gary Neville has told Chelsea they will have no right to whinge and complain when they lose players to next month's African Nations Cup.

Premier League leaders Chelsea are set to lose Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, Salomon Kalou and John Obi Mikel for up to a month when the competition gets under way.

That could give Manchester United a major advantage in overhauling Chelsea at the top of the table and skipper Neville said he had no sympathy for the plight of the Blues.

"Chelsea were aware when they signed those players that they might be called up every few years for the African Nations Cup, so they can't complain about it," said Neville.

"Up to 31 Premier League players will soon be off to the African Nations Cup, but the fact that we've got no African players at the moment means it doesn't bother us.

"I've heard talk about aligning that competition with the rest of the football calendar and it would be sensible to do so.

"Chelsea will lose some big players like Didier Drogba and Michael Essien, but I don't expect them to struggle.

"They will only lose their players for three or four Premier League games. We've lost seven defenders to injuries this month."

United have stuttered in the pursuit of Chelsea, with a comfortable win over Wolves at Old Trafford sandwiched by defeats to Aston Villa and Fulham.

Such inconsistent form has thrown the title race wide open, with Villa - who have won their last four Premier League games - right in contention.

Neville admitted United's 1-0 defeat to Villa at Old Trafford was a major wake-up call and conceded this season's title race could be the most open for years.

"We didn't expect to lose at home to Villa, but we have to hand it to Villa first and foremost," said Neville.

"There's no point making excuses when we lose a match, particularly when the opposing team do really well.

"We missed chances in the match and we've had lots of injuries, but you can't take anything away from Villa. They have great pace and gave us a difficult afternoon.

"It's difficult to say at this early stage if Villa could challenge for the league. They don't have the pedigree of winning championships, but that's not to say they can't last the distance.

"They're in a good position at the moment, they got another good result in midweek and they certainly have a good young team.

"It's whether they can sustain it over the next five months - right up there. I've been saying all along that it's not a two-horse race - it can change so quickly.

"We've dropped points, Chelsea have dropped points and it can close up at the top very quickly.

"I think the Premier League is getting stronger, with teams like Manchester City, Tottenham and Villa spending a lot of money.

"But it's always been the case that all teams can beat one another in England. There are reasons for every loss.

"There's a chance of losing to Chelsea and Liverpool every season because those games can go 50-50.

"Against Burnley we got caught in a cup-tie atmosphere in the second game of the season and we weren't ready for it.

"And against Villa we weren't at our best and we are having a real rough patch with defensive injuries."

Neville also leapt to the defence of Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, who was criticised with fielding a weakened side in his team's 3-0 defeat at United last week.

McCarthy made 10 changes with a view to fielding his strongest possible line-up against Burnley at the weekend, a game Wolves won 2-0.

And Neville said the likes of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger had no right to critcise McCarthy for picking the team he did at Old Trafford.

"Mick McCarthy has taken some stick for fielding a weakened team against us in midweek, but that's the prerogative of a manager," said Neville.

"He has the whole season to think about. It's wrong for people with big squads like Arsene Wenger to criticise Wolves when they have a different agenda.

"Wenger doesn't know what's going on at Wolves, neither do we, and Wolves should be able to prioritise what game to play each player in.

"Clubs have squads so they can rotate players. It's not for anyone to criticise - Wolves can decide what they want to do.

"They can go and play their youth team next week if they want - it's entirely up to them."

Musim Terakhir Neville?
Doni Wahyudi - detiksport

Jangan, dong... Dia emang udah lama banget sering cedera, tapi motivasinya masih dibutuhin United. Kalo perlu, dikontrak dengan bayarannya dihitung tiap main kayak Michael Owen aja. He's a true Red ...
