Quote:
ANGEL GOMES

Birthdate : 31 Aug 2000
Birthplace : London
Position : Midfielder
Joined United : 01 Jul 2016
A prodigious youth talent who became a key part of the Under-18 team while still a schoolboy.

It was an indication of his potential, he is even young for his age group and was born on the deadline to be involved in last season's FA Youth Cup. An outstanding performer at lower age levels, he earned the Premier Cup's Most Valuable Player award in 2015 despite the Reds failing to reach the latter stages of the competition.

Gomes is comfortable and assured in possession and has a wide passing range, while also providing a goal threat from a no.10 role. His maiden strike for the Under-18 at Derby County was a pearler and his tally of three goals in 10 starts, with seven further appearances off the bench, included a dramatic winner at Norwich City.

A captain of England at Under-16 level, he is widely regarded as having outstanding potential and there will be the hope he can continue to improve and handle any physical challenges, particularly if he has a growth spurt.

There were more positive signs at the start of the 2016/17 season as he pulled the strings in a no.10 role and supplied goals and assists aplenty for the youth team, including rising to score a header against West Brom to show add another string to his bow. He even claimed a hat-trick before his 16th birthday away to Everton.

His fine work with England also continued as he skippered the Under-17s to an outstanding triumph in the Croatia Cup, winning all three games including an 8-1 demolition of Germany.

Kieran McKenna commented: "Angel is clever and I think with him, first of all, he's got a really fantastic attitude towards the game. He loves his football and is bright and curious. He's interested in every training session and you can see that on the pitch.

"He's always bright, always looking for his team-mates and always looking at the opposition too, trying to find a way to exploit any weaknesses they have got. He has a fantastic football brain really and a good attitude to go with it."

Despite picking up an injury that ruled him out of England duty in the Under-17 European Championship finals, he ended the season on a real high. He became the youngest-ever recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Youth-Team Player of the Year award and, the following day, trained with the first team ahead of possible inclusion in the squad for the final Premier League game of 2016/17 against Crystal Palace.

INTRODUCING... ANGEL GOMES

Some fans might be wondering who Angel Gomes is after the young forward made his debut for Manchester United as a late substitute in the final game of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace.

Gomes replaced Wayne Rooney with five minutes to go in the 2-0 win at Old Trafford, becoming the first 16-year-old to play in the Premier League for any team and the youngest player to appear for the Reds since the late, great Duncan Edwards.

INTRODUCTION
Angel Gomes is a prodigious talent who has sparkled at the lower age groups for United and looks set to play a key role for the Under-18s this season. Born in London, the son of Gil Gomes – a former Portugal Under-21 international – already has over 20 Academy team appearances under his belt, including FA Youth Cup experience. The first of these came at Middlesbrough in the final game of the 2014/15 season, when he was just 14 years old, and he only turned 16 at the end of August.

POSITION
Clearly, the no.10 slot seems the best fit for the youngster, even though he has appeared in wider roles as well – including on his FA Youth Cup bow as a substitute against QPR. An attacking midfielder whose best work comes offensively, he is often a focal point in the team and seems to revel in the responsibility.

STYLE
The diminutive forward demands possession and likes to be involved, keeping the ball moving with short and long passes. His close control and dribbling skills are sure to entertain any supporter and he can resemble a Brazilian in terms of his movement and confidence. A clever finisher who is also capable of unleashing long-range efforts, he knits attacking moves together and makes things happen.

HIGHLIGHT
Captaining England at Under-16 and Under-17 level is some feat and he also won the MVP award at the Manchester United Premier Cup in 2015, picking up his trophy from ex-Reds defender Gary Pallister. The individual recognition was pretty remarkable due to the fact Tommy Martin’s side finished in 12th place in the competition.

TRIVIA
Angel's father Gil was also a professional and played for Braga and Salford City, among others, while winning the Under-20 World Cup with Portugal in 1991.

GOMES MAKES UNITED YOUTH AWARD HISTORY

Angel Gomes has become the youngest-ever winner of the Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year trophy at Manchester United.

The prodigious talent, who would have been captaining England's Under-17s in the European Championship finals this week but for injury, was joint-leading scorer for Kieran McKenna's vibrant Academy side. With 12 goals in 19 starts, he was at the hub of most of the Reds' attacking play, racking up a number of assists as well, and is definitely one to watch.

Gomes, who can operate in the no.10 role, is only 16 and therefore still eligible to play in McKenna's team next season and another crack at the FA Youth Cup. He has sparkled when previously coming through the schoolboy ranks at United and he appears to have an extremely bright future ahead of him.

The London-born prospect received more than 77 per cent of the votes cast on ManUtd.com, finishing ahead of fellow nominees Callum Whelan and Lee O'Connor.

After being presented with the award at Thursday's ceremony at Old Trafford, Gomes told MUTV: "It's a dream come true. Being a young age, it's things like this you wish for. All the hard work you put in at the training ground - this is the end result.

"I've missed a lot of the last two months through injury and the other lads have been consistent, so when I heard my name get called out, it was quite a surprise and a real honour."

JIMMY MURPHY AWARD - YOUNGEST WINNERS

Angel Gomes is the first 16-year-old to land the prize in its 27-year history. The first recipient of the trophy, Lee Martin, is the oldest man to lift it, as he was aged 22 back in 1990. Since then, seven 17-year-olds have emerged victorious with Norwegian teenager Mats Daehli being the previous youngest winner in 2012.

Remarkably, Gomes was born on the cut-off date for the Academy year and, if he celebrated his birthday a day later, he would still be eligible for another two years at Under-18 level. Lee O'Connor would also have been the first 16-year-old to win the award had he come out on top in the ManUtd.com poll.

Angel Gomes - 16 years, 9 months - 2017
Mats Daehli - 17 years, 2 months -2012
Will Keane - 17 years, 4 months - 2010
Phil Neville - 17 years, 4 months - 1994
Axel Tuanzebe - 17 years, 6 months - 2015
Ryan Giggs - 17 years, 6 months - 1991
Danny Welbeck - 17 years, 6 months - 2008
Federico Macheda - 17 years, 9 months - 2009

Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes has posted a throwback photo of himself with captain Wayne Rooney from back in 2007, ten years before he replaced the 31-year-old in Sunday's win against Crystal Palace.

Gomes, who has been at the club since the age of six, made his senior debut for United at Old Trafford as Jose Mourinho named the club's youngest side in Premier League history ahead of next week's Europa League final.

The 16-year-old was a late substitute, replacing Rooney after 88 minutes of their 2-0 victory on the final day of the Premier League season.

Ten years on, the 16-year-old came on as a replacement for Rooney against Crystal Palace

And the wake of his first appearance for the United first team, Gomes posted a photo on his Instagram of him and Rooney from a decade ago with the caption: '10 yrs later , anything is possible... #Godswill '.

It capped a fine week for the attacking midfielder, who on Thursday followed in the footsteps Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs and won United's Youth Team Player of Year award.

Against Palace on Sunday he became the club's youngest player since Duncan Edwards and the first born after 2000 to make his United debut.

After the match he told MUTV: 'Obviously, it's a dream come true. I've been here since the age of six working my way up, and it's what everyone dreams about.

Against Palace the youngster became the first player born after 2000 to play for United

'I just want to thank the manager for putting me on the bench and playing me today, and all the staff back at the club and everyone who has helped me.

'I'm from Manchester, Salford and it's literally down the road. It's just unbelievable.'

Fellow debutant Josh Harrop opened the scoring for Mourinho's team before Paul Pogba made sure of the victory in their final match before travelling to Stockholm.

Default Re: Angel Gomes

HOW UNITED PRODIGY GOMES USED TO COPY NANI

The 2017/18 season promises to be a big one for Manchester United Academy product Angel Gomes, who does not turn 17 until the end of August.

The teenager already has a first-team debut under his belt, with his late outing as a substitute against Crystal Palace in May making him the first player born since 2000 to appear in the Premier League.

It is a moment that Gomes still has to pinch himself about, being selected by Jose Mourinho to come on for Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford, in an exciting glimpse of the future for the 75,000 fans watching from the stands.

"That moment has been with me a long time," Angel told MUTV recently, at United's Reserves and Academy training camp in Obertraun, Austria.

"There are times when I am sat at home and I'll just be drifting away when I think of the game and how everything happened so quickly. It feels great to say that I am the club's youngest Premier League player."

Actually the youngest player in United's first team since the legendary Duncan Edwards in the 1950s, Gomes had a 2016/17 season to remember and rarely can anybody have had one campaign that was so diverse. The young midfielder also performed as a goalkeeper - when regular no.1 Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui
was injured, Gomes donned the gloves as the Reds won the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup - and as an Old Trafford ball-boy, along with team-mate Aidan Barlow, for the Emirates FA Cup tie against Wigan Athletic.

"Yes, I was in goal in the indoor tournament we won in Germany and I was a ball-boy as well, in the FA Cup," he confirmed. "To go from being a ball-boy to coming on for Wayne Rooney was amazing. What a player to come on for. Wayne Rooney is a club legend who I think will do amazing [things] at Everton. He helped me and spoke to me, when I was coming on, so it was nice."

London-born Gomes revealed some details about his background, including his relationship with former United winger Nani and laughed as he remembered trying to copy the Euro 2016 winner's acrobatic celebrations as child.

"I'm a Salford lad at heart," he said. "I love being from Salford. It's where I grew up so I always say that's where I'm from. My dad [Gil Gomes] played at the Under-23 World Cup and is well known in Portugal as they won it and he played with some great players as well. It's nice to be following in his footsteps really.

"Nani is my godfather. He's been amazing to me and gives me lots of advice. I am just lucky to have someone like that in my life. When I was younger, he used to be my idol. I used to watch him and even practice his backflips on the trampoline. I know I can't do that now!"

As captain of England at youth levels, Gomes's potential has been clear for some time but the 16-year-old's feet remain firmly on the ground. From his interview with MUTV, it's obvious he has been brought up the Manchester United way and this will stand him in good stead.

"I've been here a long time," he said. "I started at the Under-6s and progressed up really. I used to play down [an age group] because of my height and physicality obviously but I was lucky to kick on since the Under-13s and it's been amazing.

"I think people forget how young I am really. Of course, it would be a great experience to get a few more minutes in the first team under my belt at some point but I'll just try to kick on in the Under-18s and Under-23s and learn a lot of things.

"I hope to gain a lot of experience in the UEFA Youth League, for example, and the Reserves have a new coach in Ricky [Sbragia] so it'll be great to work under him too."

"Last season, we played some high quality football, but didn't end up doing the ultimate thing of winning trophies. We want to win more this season."
