Default Re: Darren Barr Fletcher

PRESSING HAS BEEN PART OF UNITED FOR YEARS

The epic battles between Manchester United and Arsenal have been trending in the last week, following the news that Arsene Wenger is set to leave the north London club at the end of the season.

The Frenchman is widely credited for modernising the Gunners and his various teams have provided outstanding competition for us down the years, most notably when Sir Alex Ferguson was in charge.

Many matches between Ferguson’s United and Wenger’s Arsenal became iconic, and the rivalry arguably reached a peak during the mid-2000s when the two clubs consistently fought it out for supremacy in the Premier League.

Stoke City midfielder Darren Fletcher was part of that famous era and, in the latest issue of Inside United magazine, the highly-respected Academy graduate recounts exactly what it was like to face Wenger’s Arsenal…

“We were always hard and fair whenever we faced Arsenal. We just knew that you couldn’t stand back and let them play their game because they had the ability to hurt teams. You have to be in their faces and disrupt them, stop them playing how they want to. Arsene Wenger probably didn’t agree, as he didn’t with many refereeing decisions, but as far as I’m concerned, we were never dirty. We just made sure we were at them from the off, in their faces and that isn’t a new concept.

“You hear so much now about teams pressing, or gegenpressing or whatever, but that had been a part of United for years. Setting a tempo, setting a speed, starting a press, making an atmosphere. It had been part of an Alex Ferguson team-talk since he first came to the club, so it’s not a new concept; it’s just got a new twang to it. It was a compliment to them, in some ways, that we approached the games like that because they had some very good players.

“They also had a lot of physical attributes. They had a quick, powerful team with big lads like Patrick Vieira, Sol Campbell, Edu, Pascal Cygan, and, at Highbury especially, you were aware just how small the pitch was when you were up against big players.

“With Vieira especially, you knew he’d be at you quick because of his long legs on that small pitch. You felt like it was touch-tackle the whole game. One- and two-touch, and it was really ferocious at times. You knew you wouldn’t have any time on the ball. Fortunately for us, we were used to that because we played in very small areas in training. The onus was on moving the ball very quickly, so we were very well prepared for that kind of situation in games.

“Particularly when we were the top two teams in the country, the atmospheres for games between Manchester United and Arsenal were great to be a part of. At Highbury, it was more intimate and enclosed, but it didn’t really affect you as such. It was a bit like Anfield in the sense that it’s so tight and you feel like you can’t breathe at times, because the pitch is small and the fans are right on top of you, but I couldn’t say that ever affected us as such. We were used to it and we expected it.

“There was always a lot of history between the sides and that built up a lot when we were fighting for league titles and cups every year, but those were the games you relished. Each one was a chance to test yourselves against the best and put down a marker for everyone to see.”

Fletcher: MU Tak Sanggup Main Terbuka Lawan Liverpool
Rifqi Ardita Widianto - detikSport

'Manchester United cannot allow to wait 30 years like Liverpool to win the title': Darren Fletcher says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to deliver a title within three years to avoid a decades-long wait like their rivals

* Manchester United have not won a title since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013
* Their rivals Liverpool are now easing to their first league win in 30 years
* Darren Fletcher warns United must avoid copying Liverpool's barren run

Manchester United 'cannot allow' to wait as long as Liverpool to win the Premier League title, says Darren Fletcher.

The former Red Devils midfielder won five league medals and the Champions League during his illustrious playing career at Old Trafford.

But seven years have now passed since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson without the club adding to their haul.

To make matters worse, arch-rivals Liverpool are now on the brink of winning their first title in 30 years.

Fletcher told beIN SPORTS about Liverpool's 30-year barren spell: 'Manchester United cannot allow that. The current run is bad enough as it is.

'We need to see Manchester United winning the league in the next two or three years down the line.

'That's being realistic. The bar has been raised in terms of what it takes to win the league.'

Although signs have been improving in recent weeks, especially following United's impressive win over Manchester City on Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side are still a long way behind their rivals.

Darren Fletcher says Manchester United cannot wait as long as Liverpool to win their next title. The midfielder won five league title and a Champions League during his time at Old Trafford

But Fletcher believes United can make up the difference, currently 37 points, within the next three years.

His optimism is based on the fact that although Liverpool and Manchester City are miles ahead of the competition, their respective managers might not be at their clubs in a few years.

The 36-year-old said: 'United have to be ready for Man City and Liverpool to drop off, which will probably come in a couple of years.

'I can't see Pep Guardiola still being at Manchester City in two or three years. Jurgen Klopp, too. Maybe it's wishful thinking.

'Man United have to put themselves in a position to capitalise if that happens. Next season I expect a better campaign and in two or three years, I am expecting title challenges and potentially winning.'

Corona Paksa Darren Fletcher Gantung Sepatu
Adhi Prasetya - detikSport

Glasgow - Malang betul nasib Darren Fletcher.

Namun pandemi virus Corona membuat situasinya tak menentu.

He's back !!!

FLETCHER COACHING UNITED'S UNDER-16S

Darren Fletcher is delighted to be giving something back to his former club as he is currently helping to coach Manchester United's Under-16s.

The ex-Scotland international has retired from the game after a stellar career, which included over 300 appearances for the Reds before representing West Brom and Stoke City.

At 36, he is working on his badges and is still hugely respected by everybody associated with the Reds, not just for his on-field efforts but for always displaying the sort of personality and qualities that represent the ethos of the club so well.

“I needed a bit of a break away from it [football],” he told us. “I think the transition from playing to the other side has been difficult. All your focus is on being a player, day in and day out, and you miss being a player.

“I think I needed that period to step away a little bit and took my time to come away and accept not being a player anymore, moving onto my coaching badges, and this is the early stages of doing it.

“I'm just getting my coaching badges done and being invited back into the club,” he explained. “I've got a bit of spare time in the evenings and I thought there's nothing better than doing something at United and giving a bit back, working at the Academy.

“It's a club that means a lot to me, so it ticks both boxes really. It allows me to get my coaching badges done and give a bit back to the Academy kids.

“Do you know what? I've really enjoyed it. I started a few weeks before lockdown, and got a taste of it, but have been back involved for two or three weeks. I'm just loving it, the enthusiasm and the stage they're at in their career.

“It's a great place to be, in the evenings, I'm giving up my time and can see how much it means to them.

“I pass on some advice and small details on the game and they really try to take it on board and add it to their game. To see them doing it, and getting rewards from it, means a lot.”

Head of Academy Nick Cox said: “The opportunity to learn from Darren during this period will be invaluable for our Under-16s group. It is important that we have a coaching staff with a wide variety of skillsets and experiences to unlock the potential in each of our young players. Darren is already a fantastic young coach who knows exactly what it takes to make it at Manchester United, to win trophies and perform at the highest level. He brings with him the expertise to influence and improve our young players in every session and is a great addition to our continuously evolving team of dedicated coaches.”

Manchester United promote Darren Fletcher to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first-team coaching staff after he impressed with their Under 16s

* Manchester United have hired their ex-player Darren Fletcher in a coaching role
* Fletcher had been working for the Under-16 team but will now join the first team
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Fletcher will be a great addition to his backroom staff
* It is the 36-year-old's first senior coaching role since he retired back in 2019

Manchester United have promoted Darren Fletcher to Ole Gunnar Solskaer's first-team coaching staff.

The former United star, who spent 20 successful years at the club as a player, has joined Solskjaer's backroom team after impressing with the Under 16s, a role he has held since October.

Commenting on his appointment, Solskjaer said: 'Darren has the United DNA running through his veins and he knows exactly what it takes to be a Manchester United player.

Manchester United have promoted Darren Fletcher to a first-team coaching role. Fletcher will leave his role with the Under 16s and join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's backroom team

'He is at the start of his coaching career and his experience both on and off the pitch along with his winning mentality, commitment and hard work will be a great addition to the staff.'

This will be Fletcher's first senior job in coaching, having only retired back in 2019 after spells at West Brom and Stoke.

The 36-year-old, who has also worked as a pundit for Sky Sports since hanging up his boots, said: 'I am delighted to be returning to the club as a first-team coach.

'It's a very exciting time for this young team and I am looking forward to taking the next steps in my coaching career by working with Ole and his staff.'

The 36-year-old (R) had worked as a pundit after retiring but now has first senior coaching job

Fletcher's appointment comes after it was revealed that Solskjaer had sought help from more United legends in Roy Keane and Ryan Giggs, who were brought in to hold talks with his squad.

United have transformed into title contenders after overcoming a shaky start to the season and currently sit second in the Premier League, only behind Liverpool on goal difference.

Fletcher will step into his new role immediately and help Solskjaer's side prepare for Wednesday's Carabao Cup semi-final against arch-rivals City.

The former midfielder is familiar with the intensity and pressure that comes with a Manchester derby, having played in many over his 20 years at the club.

As a player, the ex-Scotland international won 10 major honours with United, five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, two League Cups, the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

Darren Fletcher 'has been Manchester United's peacemaker this season amid tensions between Ralf Rangnick and the squad'... with the 'popular' technical director helping to lift spirits during turbulent campaign

* Man United stars have a good relationship with Darren Fletcher, reports claim
* The technical director is said to be the 'peacemaker' behind the scenes
* The former midfielder is a 'popular figure' helping to ease tensions at the club

Manchester United's turbulent season has been eased by the presence of 'popular' technical director Darren Fletcher, reports claim.

United have endured a difficult campaign that has already seen the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Red Devils quickly falling out of the race for the title and their major signings - Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane - struggling to shine at times.

There has already been reports of a divide between Ronaldo and interim boss Ralf Rangnick, with the Portugese forward linked with an exit this summer after a handful of off-colour displays that saw him storm down the tunnel at full time.

But it has been former midfielder Fletcher that has been the club's saving grace, acting as 'peacemaker' amid the tension-fuelled season, according to the Sun - with players warming to his presence.

Darren Fletcher has become the 'peacemaker' at Man United this season, reports claim. The Red Devils have endured a tough season but Fletcher has reportedly lifted their spirits

His input in the team is seen as 'so important' at a time where the players are struggling to adapt to Rangnick's pressing system, as well as the guidance from the German's assistant Chris Armas.

The 38-year-old joined United as a schoolboy in 1995 and went on to play 342 times for the club, winning five Premier League titles, the League Cup, FA Cup and Champions League - and is a cult figure among fans.

And the new generation of players have also taken a quick liking to him as he is acting as the voice of reason during a difficult season at Old Trafford.

A report in Spain last month claimed Ronaldo's relationship with Rangnick was 'totally fractured', with the former Real Madrid and Juventus star believed to be leading stars feeling the ex-Leipzig boss is 'out of his depth'.

Ronaldo is United's top scorer this season with 15 but has scored just once this calendar year and is rumoured to be contemplating an exit.

Fletcher has quickly taken up an influential role at the club, having initially coached their academy before becoming first team coach and then technical director.

He will be in charge of picking United's next boss, and has also been overseeing the club's youngsters and those out on loan.

The former midfielder is a 'popular' member of the squad who has eased tension this term. The squad have reportedly become 'fractured', with Rangnick said to be at odds with Ronaldo

Speaking about the current batch of talent currently looking to impress at other clubs, he spoke about the importance of 'not piling pressure' on youngsters and said he was excited to see what the future would bring.

'We have to manage the balance between allowing them to develop and creating the right steps for that, without piling the pressure onto them,' he said at a Fans' Forum event.

'Along with (head of academy Nick Cox), I'm looking at how we best use the loan system to give academy players invaluable experience at other clubs.

'We currently have 13 young players and academy products on loan and playing regularly in other divisions or leagues.

'Hopefully we'll see players like Brandon Williams, Teden Mengi, Jimmy Garner, Ethan Laird, Tahiti Chong, and Amad Diallo reap the benefits of that. All of them are doing really well on loan and we're excited to bring them back in pre-season to see how they fare with our first-team players.'
