Wenger: Beat Bayern and we can win CL
Soccernet, Kevin Palmer - February 15, 2013

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has claimed his side will emerge as strong contenders to lift this season's Champions League crown if they can come through their last-16 tie against Bundesliga-leaders Bayern Munich.

A defiant Wenger has again insisted he would be content to extend his eight-year wait for a trophy if it meant he secured a top-four finish in the Premier League for a 16th successive season.

Arsene Wenger is looking forward to the clash with Bayern Munich

However, the Gunners boss was quick to dismiss the suggestion that the FA Cup is his side's only realistic hope of silverware in 2013.

"If we go past Bayern Munich, why should we not say we can go further in the competition and win it," Wenger said. "It looks as if the FA Cup is more reachable than any other competition this season, but you don't really know how difficult it could be. If you compare the FA Cup to the Premier League, clearly we have more chances to win the cup as we are too far away, but you never know.

"Our basic target is always the championship. The real consistency of a team is the quality that is judged over 38 games. The priority is the championship, but I told you many times that we take the FA Cup seriously. We prepare for every game like it is a final."

Wenger insisted his team selection for the FA Cup fifth-round tie against Blackburn on Saturday will not be affected by a desire to keep players fresh for the Bayern Munich clash.

The Frenchman also admitted the memories of Arsenal's humiliating Capital One Cup exit at the hands of Bradford last December have refocused minds for games against lower-league opposition.

"In 16 years, I don't think we had upsets against lower-division clubs and then we had one against Bradford," he said. "We took that game seriously and we have analysed what happened afterwards. They have proven since that they are a team of quality and we will take the game (against Blackburn) seriously as well.

"We play a team who have a good chance to go through and they have experience, but we only have big names in our squad, so we will field a team of big names for sure. The players who will not start tomorrow are the players who have played many games recently.

"We are the favourites, they are the outsiders. They have nothing to lose, but many of their players have Premier League experience and that is why they are dangerous outsiders.

"The FA Cup is an important target for us. We always take it very seriously. We are on a good run and we want to continue the run. It is as basic as that. We are in a period now at the end of February and March when every game can decide your season."

Gunners captain Thomas Vermaelen looks set to return to the Arsenal line-up for the Blackburn game, but Jack Wilshere is rated at only 50-50 to play in the FA Cup tie after he picked up a knock in last Saturday's 1-0 win at Sunderland.

"I will not take a risk on Jack," Wenger said. "With the rest of the season in mind and what has happened to him before, we will not risk it."

Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich: Biggest Reasons for Gunners' UCL Defeat

Arsenal's chance at ending their title-less run took another serious blow with their 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.

The Gunners' haven't won a title since the 2005 FA Cup. They came to the Emirates Stadium this week looking to try to keep their last remaining chance at a title this season alive. Yet on the night, it was simply all about the German giants, who cruised past the North London club to take a commanding lead heading into the second leg back in Germany next month.

Arsenal now find themselves on the brink of elimination in the tournament—needing to essentially win by three goals, in Germany, to progress to the quarterfinals.

Read on to see the biggest reasons for Arsenal's defeat in this one.

Lack of direction in attack

Achieving some success in attack against a dominant defensive club like Bayern Munich was never going to be an easy task for Arsenal here.

The German giants have one of the most imposing records in world football in terms of goals conceded this season, and showcased again here just how solid they can be at the back. It took a rare error from Manuel Neuer to give Lukas Podolski his goal, otherwise it seems that the North London club would not have troubled the score attendant at all in this one.

Yet despite Bayern's defensive solidity, Arsenal were still caught out here by their own lack of direction going forward—especially through the middle.

Jack Wilshere didn't take the Germans on through the middle until the result was seemingly all over. Mikel Arteta offered nothing other than sideways passes back to Thomas Vermaelen and Santi Cazorla—their go-to man in terms of creativity—was left to shoulder a load that not even his spectacular shoulders were able to carry here.

Theo Walcott's inclusion as a striker meant that the Gunners did not have a go-to man at the top of their attack, which in itself was not a problem. The problem became when Arsenal couldn't get the ball to him anywhere other than the wings, which usually then resulted in a poor cross into the middle.

Arsenal arguably looked at their best when Olivier Giroud came on and gave them some presence in the middle. Up until then, they were seriously lacking.

Think of it like this—if Barcelona are the model for possession-based, attacking football (commonly called tika-taka), then Arsenal have the tika without the taka.

They have the possession under control and can frustrate their opponents' defense, but they do not have the attacking football that Barca have. They do not have the direct running at defenders nor do they have good balls being poured through to their forward line.

That was certainly noticeable in this one, and a key reason for defeat.

Still not sure in defense

Arsenal did have to endure some positional changes for this clash, with captain Thomas Vermaelen heading out to left back to cover the injured Kieran Gibbs.

Yet despite that change, the Gunners' defense was simply woeful in this one, with the North London club not possessing the communication and solidity that was on display less than 100 yards away.

Laurent Koscielny was probably the best at the back for Arsenal, but the Frenchman struggled in his communication with Per Mertesacker throughout—leaving far too many opportunities for Bayern Munich to gain ascendency in attack and create goal-scoring chances.

They allowed too much space for the opening goal; they didn't mark up properly on the corner on two occasions for the second goal; and they didn't pick up Philip Lahm or shut down the middle of the box for the third and game-clinching goal.

Bacary Sagna was caught out here, but not exposed completely due to the fact that the German side didn't attack down the right as much as they did the left.

But still, it wasn't great from the Gunners here, and it's been their inconsistencies that have let them down time and time again this season. If they could sure up at the back, you'd have to think that the North London club would become a real threat going forward this year.

Yet with just three clean sheets in their last 13 games—and neither of which came against solid opposition—it seems that's a long way off from happening.

Bayern Munich were simply too good

Whilst Arsenal had a lot of problems coming into this match and throughout the fixture as well, the truth is that the Gunners weren't completely terrible. In comparison to how we've seen them play throughout the year already, it wasn't as bad as say, losing to Blackburn or Bradford City was.

The truth here was that Bayern Munich are a very, very good football team who are tough for any team in world football to match up against. Period.

Their defense is the best on the planet, their midfield is strong—decisive and cohesive—and their attack features some of the most prolific goalscorers. Bayern stop goals at one end and they take their chances at the other; it's almost as simple as that for the German league leaders.

Bayern's squad is also ridiculously strong, with the Germans holding a prolific goal-scoring record through the Champions League tournament so far.

Whilst Arsenal's first substitute was Tomas Rosicky, Bayern's was Arjen Robben—a Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, Eredivisie and FA Cup champion. And they still had guys like Mario Gomez on hand to bring on later in the match also.

Simply put, Bayern Munich have too much skill and too much strength for a club like Arsenal to match up against, and the result was merely a reflection of that.

It seems that the second leg will just be a matter of formalities now.

UEFA Champions League: Bold Predictions for Second Leg of Each Round of 16 Tie

The UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg contests are complete.

Here, we make bold predictions regarding the outcome of the second legs—and ultimately the ties—as the competition takes an exasperating two-week break.

They're not out of this world, but they're certainly out there. Share your predictions with us in the comments below.

PSG Win Without Stealing the Headlines (Yes, It's Bold!)

Paris Saint-Germain were on the verge of a silky-smooth UEFA Champions League away performance. Entering the final 10 minutes, the nouveau-riche French side had a commanding two-goal lead to take back to Parc des Princes after soundly outplaying Valencia.

It was the evening Lucas Moura announced his presence to the rest of world football, Marco Verratti dictated play and Javier Pastore sparkled.

But that was all far too unenthralling for PSG, who conceded a late—and potentially critical—goal and had Zlatan Ibrahimovic harshly sent off.

PSG have the depth and quality to win this game on home soil, but this time they'll do it without stealing all the headlines.

Cristiano Ronaldo Fails to Score

Cristiano Ronaldo's long-awaited return to Old Trafford is imminent and we're all eager to see his performance.

The crowd will graciously applaud him for all that he did during his time in a Red Devils' shirt, but they're widely expected to be groaning when Ronaldo continues his unbelievably consistent goalscoring record.

Hold that thought.

While Manchester United stand little chance of keeping a clean sheet against an attack so ferocious, and will likely have to outscore los Blancos to progress to the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals, could it be that Ronaldo's homecoming isn't so sweet after all?

Celtic Lose 3-0 Again

The first leg of this fixture all but ended this tie, as Juventus scored three away goals and secured a clean sheet to take back to Turin.

Many expect a reserved performance from the Bianconeri this time around considering the supreme advantage held, but will have to be wary of a Bhoys side who have nothing to lose and much to set straight.

This game couldn't conceivably be goalless, could it?

Well, the Old Lady have no need for goals and their defensive is clearly sound. Celtic will be desperate to avenge the first leg, and despite the fact they're a good side, could easily fall 3-0 again.

Borussia Dortmund Will Go Ahead and Stay Ahead

The reigning Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund have been far from bulletproof this season.

As talented as they are, a series of mental lapses and unfortunate circumstances have hindered their pursuit of Bayern Munich. BVB simply cannot retain leads to the required standard.

Opponent-------Score-----First goalscorer
Wolfsburg-----------2-3----------Marco Reus
Hamburg------------1-4----------Robert Lewandowski
Frankfurt------------3-3----------Lukasz Pisczcek
Manchester City-----1-1----------Marco Reus
Real Madrid----------2-2----------Marco Reus
Dusseldorf-----------1-1----------Jakub Blaszczykowski
Hannover------------1-1----------Robert Lewandowski

This is a sample of results this season to prove how many points Borussia have dropped.

Against Shakhtar Donetsk in the first leg, they went behind twice and did well to come back. At Signal Iduna Park they will likely strike first, and "the yellow wall" will be hoping they can hold out this time.

Arsenal Score from Open Play

The last time Bayern Munich conceded from open play was December 5th, 2012.

Borussia Moenchengladbach managed to score a penalty on December 14th, while Arsenal managed a goal from a corner in the home leg on Tuesday evening.

Let's say the Gunners go one better. No, they don't win the second leg or the tie overall, but they net a goal from open play to halt this astonishing record and deal a blow to this unerringly confident defence.

Goals Galore in Andalusia

FC Porto beat Malaga 1-0 at the Dragao on Tuesday night to take a slender advantage to Andalusia.

Los Boquerones sacrificed attacking intent for defensive stability and they put in a superb performance. The Dragoes eventually scored, but it's arguable the linesman should have flagged it.

Expect a much more incisive Manuel Pellegrini side on home turf and expect the offense to gel much better. In Portugal they really struggled despite the return of Julio Baptista and presence of Isco.

Malaga know they have to score a few, but they'll also be aware of the attacking delights Porto carry. This one is difficult to call, but you can expect goals at a minimum despite a low-scoring affair in Porto.

Milan Keep Another Clean Sheet

Schalke Win

Schalke's season is lost.

They sacked Huub Stevens, which did nothing, they lost Lewis Holtby, which left a rather large hole and they're slipping out of recognition in the Bundesliga table.

With just one win in 12 games to speak of, few gave die Knappen a chance when facing a new-look Galatasaray. Yet they come away with a 1-1 draw and therefore an away goal, so who's the favourite going into the second leg?

Still Gala!

But I go back to the first two sentences—this season holds nothing for them. What are the chances Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Co. give it one last hurrah and pull up some trees in Europe's elite competition?

Schalke might just win the second leg.
