Manchester United visit Derby County as holders Arsenal welcome Burnley to the Emirates for FA Cup fourth round

* Manchester United will face Derby County in the FA Cup fourth round
* Holders Arsenal have been handed a home draw against Burnley
* Chelsea will visit either Northampton Town or MK Dons in the next round

Holders Arsenal have been handed a favourable home draw against Championship opposition Burnley in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The Gunners, who are looking to win the famous competition for the third year in a row, beat Sunderland 3-1 on Saturday to earn their place in Monday's draw.

Manchester United, who laboured to a 1-0 win against Sheffield United at Old Trafford at the weekend, face a trip to high-flying Championship side Derby County.

Quote:
FULL FA CUP FOURTH ROUND DRAW

West Brom/Bristol City vs Peterborough

Eastleigh/Bolton vs Leeds United

Arsenal vs Burnley

Derby County vs Manchester United

Huddersfield/Reading vs Walsall

Exeter City/Liverpool vs West Ham

Wycombe/Aston Villa vs Manchester City

Shrewsbury vs Sheffield Wednesday

Nottingham Forest vs Watford

Carlisle United/Yeovil vs Everton

Crystal Palace vs Stoke City

Oxford United vs Newport/Blackburn

Ipswich/Portsmouth vs Bournemouth

Colchester United vs Tottenham/Leicester

Bury/Bradford vs Hull City

Northampton Town/MK Dons vs Chelsea
Northampton's reward if they can get past MK Dons in a third-round replay will be a visit from Prmier League champions Chelsea.

Chelsea are not the only top flight giant taking to the road with United at Derby and Manchester City to pitch up at either Sky Bet League Two club Wycombe or Aston Villa, who drew 1-1 on Saturday.

Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Exeter and the winner of that replay will entertain West Ham.

Vanarama National League outfit Eastleigh, the lowest ranked team left in the competition, will host Championship side Leeds if they can see off Bolton at Ten Acres.

Harry Kane's late penalty kept Tottenham in the competition and if Spurs can do the business against Leicester in their replay, a journey to Colchester awaits.

Crystal Palace tackle Stoke in a rare all-Premier League tie while Oxford, who knocked Swansea out on Sunday, must wait to discover if they will host their League Two rivals Newport, or Blackburn.

If West Brom manage to get past Bristol City they will welcome Peterborough, Everton are tasked with visiting either Carlisle or Yeovil from the fourth tier and Watford travel north to Nottingham Forest.

Bournemouth complete the top-flight contingent and could enjoy a short trip to Fratton Park if Portsmouth can overcome a replay at home to Ipswich.

Other ties see Huddersfield or Reading hosting Walsall, Shrewsbury entertaining Sheffield Wednesday and Hull going west to either Bury or Bradford.

All FA Cup fourth round ties are scheduled to be played between January 29 and February 1.

Manchester United lead FA Cup TV coverage yet again as FA reveal fixture changes for fourth-round ties

* Manchester United will be shown live in FA Cup for 49th time in a row
* United have been shown live every cup game since January 2005
* Liverpool, Everton and Tottenham also picked for TV fixtures

Manchester United will continue their run of always being shown on TV in the FA Cup when they face Derby County in the fourth round.

The game will be shown live on BBC One on January 29, making it 49 FA Cup ties in a row in which United have been picked for TV.

The sequence dates back over a decade to January 2005, with no other club coming close in the number of games shown live in the competition.

Wayne Rooney celebrates his late penalty that saw Manchester United reach the FA Cup fourth round

That means the game being moved to the controversial Friday night slot, which hosted Liverpool's trip to Exeter last week.

The BBC will also be showing Premier League champions trip to either Northampton or MK Dons, which will be played on the Sunday afternoon.

BT Sport will show two games on the Saturday of the fourth round weekend, with Colchester against Tottenham or Leicester the lunchtime kick-off, and Liverpool or Exeter against West Ham at 5.30pm.

Carlisle or Yeovil's game at home to Everton will be the early game on Sunday, also on BT Sport.

Aston Villa 2-0 Wycombe Wanderers: Ciaran Clark and Idrissa Gueye find the net as Remi Garde's side set up FA Cup fourth round clash against Manchester City
  • Aston Villa earn FA Cup fourth round spot after 2-0 victory against League Two Wycombe Wanderers
  • Villa defender Ciaran Clark gave his side a 1-0 lead with a 75th-minute header
  • Substitute Idrissa Gueye slotted home from close range to add to Wycombe's misery late on
  • Remi Garde's side will now face FA Cup clash against Manchester City at Villa Park

Behind the scenes Aston Villa hold ambitions of gaining promotion to the Premier League at the first attempt, should the expected relegation this season materialise.

But their performance here spoke volumes of how any bounce back may fall flat.

Remi Garde’s side stuttered and stumbled and had to wait until 15 minutes from time to break through League Two Wycombe, who have defeats to Morecombe and Hartlepool in their recent history.

Clark (6) puts his header past Wycombe goalkeeper Matt Ingram to hand Villa an advantage against the League Two outfit

The Villa players join Clark in celebration of his opening goal in front of the jubilant home fans

Gareth Ainsworth was once again a livewire presence on the touchline, conducting his team with electric instructions, but ultimately his players tired.

After a few minutes knocking on the door, Ashley Westwood delivered a cross that Ciaran Clark buried with a well-directed header.

In the 90th minute, Villa made the victory appear comfortable. Rudy Gestede turned Scott Sinclair’s cross back to Idrissa Gueye, and the midfielder swept a finish into the corner of the net.

Wycombe had been unable to join Millwall, Bradford, Sheffield United and Leyton Orient in lower league teams to vanquish Villa in cup competitions, but that cannot disguise the concern this display should bring.

The first game of this tie marked a nadir in Villa’s season of despair and illustrated the replay here would be no straightforward task.

Wycombe contained their Premier League opponents at Adams Park, prompting furious scenes from travelling supporters who finally snapped at their grossly underperforming club.

We saw Micah Richards striving to placate irate fans, a furore around Brad Guzan and Joleon Lescott joking on the bench, and the police guard required to escort the squad and staff onto the team bus amid ugly scenes of venomous abuse.

Since then, in beating Crystal Palace and drawing with Leicester, Villa have looked better. Granted, they could hardly have looked worse.

In his programme notes, Garde stressed the importance of maintaining the momentum gained from picking up four points in successive matches, but still made nine changes to the side that found a spirited draw against Leicester.

Westwood and Jordan Ayew were the only survivors, while Guzan was restored in goal for his first outing since an error-strewn display against Sunderland on January 2. Boos greeted some of the American’s touches in an indication his part in the bizarre chewing-gum game from the first encounter has not been forgotten by Villa’s fans. Jack Grealish and Micah Richards both returned after spells out.

Wycombe cannot afford such rotation, and Ainsworth made just one alteration from the team that lost 1-0 at Hartlepool on Saturday. Paul Hayes replaced Gozie Ugwu.

Where Villa’s matchday 18 cost more than £50million in recruitment, Wycombe’s was put together for the princely sum of nothing. But again, any supposed difference in quality between clubs separated by 53 places in the league ladder was negligible.

If anything, Wycombe were the better team in a first-half that ended with loud jeers from the home support. Those who had bothered to turn up that is, with thousands of empty seats visible.

More than 4,000 Wycombe fans made the trip up and their voices were the only ones audible as they gloated at Villa’s bereft play.

‘That’s why you’re going down,’ they chanted on numerous occasions as the hosts misplaced easy passes. ‘You’re only here for the Wycombe,’ was another taunt that proved not wholly disingenuous.

Garry Thompson wins a header as Villa's goalkeeper Guzan sees the ball go wide during FA Cup clash

The visitors constructed the superior moves and the two clearest chances in the opening period. In the 31st minute a looping cross by Hayes found its way to the far post and Sam Wood, who struck a crisp volley with his left that Guzan had to fling his body to divert away.

Then just before the interval a neat interchange resulted in Joe Jacobson arriving in space on the overlap. Guzan missed Jacobson's cross but Garry Thompson’s header went over.

Garde sent Gueye on for Carlos Sanchez at half-time but Villa’s inferiority persisted. Just after the hour Wood’s cross found Thompson but his header veered just wide.

Eventually, Villa roused themselves enough to win the game. In the 67th minute Scott Sinclair wasted Villa’s best chance, firing wide from Ayew’s cross despite having time to set himself. He did better shortly after, darting into box to create what looked a certain goal only for Aaron Pierre, who starred in the first match, to sprint across and block. Rudy Gestede was unable to bundle home the resulting corner.

Garde continued to tinker in a bid to affect the game and replaced Grealish with Carles Gil. Shortly after, Wycombe failed to cover the ground to halt Westwood’s cross and Clark sent the ball past Matt Ingram. Gueye scored late to add gloss, his first Villa goal since a summer move, and Villa progress to an altogether different tie against Manchester City.

Bristol City 0-1 West Brom: Salomon Rondon fires the Baggies through to the FA Cup fourth round
  • Salomon Rondon opened the scoring for West Brom in the 52nd minute
  • Striker's goal was enough for Baggies to secure victory in FA Cup replay
  • The two sides had drawn the original tie 2-2 at The Hawthorns
  • Tony Pulis' side will now face Peterborough United in the fourth round

Tony Pulis proved he still has a bit of FA Cup romantic in him as he guided West Brom to the fourth round.

The manager with the reputation as the most pragmatic man in the Premier League picked his strongest team to play at Bristol City – and was rewarded when Salomon Rondon put his team into the fourth round.

And with a home tie against Peterborough to come, Pulis can offer the fans who have grumbled at some of his functional football the thought of a bit of Cup glory.

Salomon Rondon celebrates scoring for West Brom after 52 minutes against Bristol City on Tuesday night

The Baggies striker finished past Matt O'Leary of Bristol City from close range after 52 minutes at Ashton Gate

The Albion boss had grumbled about how tired his players were from too much travelling after two away games in a week.

But Pulis, fiercely proud of how he once took Stoke to a Wembley FA Cup final, ignored the fact he had a fiery local derby against relegation-haunted Aston Villa to come this weekend.

And Venezuelan striker Rondon made it count against the managerless Championship side with a neat finish just after the break.

He found space to chest down Craig Dawson’s deep cross before prodding the ball beyond the reach of rookie goalkeeper Max O’Leary.

It was tough on the 19-year-old Academy product who had done nothing wrong until then on his full debut in the absence of first choice Frankie Fielding.

But Albion had earned this replay with the last kick on their own ground, and Pulis was determined not to throw that away.

That was in sharp contrast to the Championship club with caretaker boss John Pemberton resting his top scorer Jonathan Kodjia and three other regulars.

While he’d had to rely on O’Leary, Pulis had the luxury of picking England keeper Ben Foster on his way back from a cruciate knee injury.

And the 32-year old showed his quality, spreading himself well to force Wes Burns to fire wide after a clever pass by Bobby Reid had sent him through.
West Brom had to reshuffle when Chris Brunt was injured after just 17 minutes, with sub Sebastien Pocognoli coming on for only his second appearance in a year.

But the Premier League side took it in their stride, and almost went ahead through Craig Gardner’s well struck left-foot volley that beat O’Leary but went just wide.

Bizarrely that was the first of four or five long range efforts, none of which forced the teenage goalkeeper to work.

But Albion did miss a golden opportunity when just before the break another Gardner attempted volley bounced up invitingly for Gareth McAuley, only for the defender to head over from six yards.

At the other end City had a free kick on the edge of the box which caused a scuffle ending in Claudio Yacob getting booked, but Luke Freeman eventually chipped it just wide.

City, who had been seconds away from going through at The Hawthorns, mounted a furious search for an equaliser. But Foster stood firm, saving from a Wes Burns volley.

Bolton 3-2 Eastleigh: Crisis club come from behind to see off non-League opponents and earn tie against Leeds in classic cup tie
  • Eastleigh full back Joe Partington puts non-league club ahead after just 11 minutes with fine solo goal
  • Gary Madine pulls hosts level before Dean Moxey puts them ahead before half time
  • Eastleigh equalise again in stoppage time at end of a topsy turvy first half through Kaid Mohamed
  • Darren Pratley slots home to restore the Championship side's lead after an hour

Survival is the name of the game for Bolton these days. Having avoided a winding-up petition in the High Court on Monday, they kept alive their FA Cup hopes with victory over non-league Eastleigh last night.

It did not come easily as the National League side took a deserved lead and then equalised before half time after Bolton had got their noses in front.

But the four-time winners of the FA Cup had not lost to non-league opposition in 20 ties stretching back to January 1911 and they managed to extend that run.

The Eastleigh players applaud their travelling fans after a brave effort against the side three divisions above them

Captain Darren Pratley, who had rescued his side with the late equaliser in Hampshire earlier this month, came up with a second-half winner to break Eastleigh’s hearts once again.

It means Bolton go through to host Leeds United here in the fourth round.
The club are £172.9million in debt and have been given a month’s extension to fund a buyer or generate the funds to pay a £2.2m tax bill.

It would have helped even more if this replay had been televised by the BBC. Indeed, Eastleigh were so aggrieved that they had been overlooked by the corporation that they had threatened to ban the filming of Football Focus at their stadium a week on Saturday if they had got through last night. That is no longer an issue.

That High Court hearing certainly wasn’t the best preparation for a Bolton team sitting bottom of the Championship with only two wins from 29 games this season.

And it got even worse for Neil Lennon’s side after only 10 minutes when they went behind to the non-league team.

Andy Drury played the ball out wide to Joe Partington and the full back decided to take on the Bolton defence as he cut inside on his left foot.

Wellington Silva and Dean Moxey combined but could not stop him and Partington finished with a clinical shot into the bottom corner. A Bolton side lacking in ideas and belief offered little in response until Gary Madine’s equaliser sparked a flurry of three goals in nine minutes before half time.

Pratley fed Josh Vela on the right and his cross picked out Madine on the edge of the six-yard box. The striker had far too much time and space to take the ball on his chest and rifle a volley past Ross Flitney.

The Eastleigh keeper came to his side’s rescue in the 43rd minute, clawing Silva’s curling free kick away from the top corner. However, the resulting corner was only cleared as far as Moxey who sized up a shot from 20 yards before despatching it low to Flitney’s right.

Bolton keeper Paul Rachubka can only watch as Partington's 11th-minute shot sails past him and into the corner of the net

At that stage it looked as though Eastleigh’s chance might have disappeared but they stunned Bolton with an equaliser in the second minute of added time.

Kaid Mohamed — making his debut — played a neat one-two with Jai Reason and raced onto the return pass.

Goalkeeper Paul Rachubka thought about coming out but hesitated and Mohamed steered the ball underneath him.

Liam Trotter went close to restoring Bolton’s lead early in the second half but he steered a header just over from Wellington’s cross.

The winner wasn’t long in coming. Mark Davies steered the ball into Pratley who played a one-two with substitute Shola Ameobi — playing his last game for the club because they cannot afford to offer him a new deal.

Pratley never looked like missing and drilled the ball past Flitney and into the bottom corner.

The relief around the Macron Stadium was palpable. The home fans had not only booed their team off the pitch at half time, they had jeered them back on at the start of the second half.

It has not been an easy time for Bolton, now facing relegation to League One four years after they disappeared from the Premier League. Nor has it been an easy week. But they are alive and kicking in every sense.

Default Re: [2015/16] FA Cup

Reading 5-2 Huddersfield: Matej Vydra's second-half hat-trick secures place in FA Cup fourth-round for Royals
  • Jamie Paterson fired the visitors into an early lead with eight minute strike
  • Tommy Smith made it 2-0 at the Madejski Stadium with 15 minutes played
  • Lucas Piazon pulled a goal back for the Royals on the half hour mark
  • Reading striker Matej Vydra levelled up the scores in the 57th minute
  • Vydra struck again minutes later to secure the lead for the home side
  • The Czech strike completed his hat-trick in the dying minutes
  • Alex Fernandez completed the Royal rout with injury time strike

It was the kind of momentary lapse that all defenders dread. The stud wedged in the turf, the misjudgement, the split-second that allows an alert striker to get goal-side.

That was the cruel fate that befell Huddersfield Town’s Jonathan Hogg in this replay. It was just before the half-hour, his team leading Reading 2-0 thanks to an early double-blast, when the defender let Matej Vydra turn him.

As Hogg tried to recover his ground, he stretched out and hauled Vydra to the ground. There could be no complaint - Hogg was the last man and that means the ultimate punishment of the straight red card.

Huddersfield forward Jamie Paterson opens the scoring in the eighth minute at the Madejski Stadium

Paterson is mobbed by his Terriers team-mates following his early strike against the Royals

It was all Huddersfield early on as Tommy Smith made it 2-0 with just 15 minutes on the clock

And on this moment, FA Cup fortunes turned full circle. Huddersfield saw their early advantage, gained through Jamie Paterson and Tommy Smith, evaporate.

Reading were suddenly ascendant and Lucas Piazon inflicted immediate punishment after the dismissal with a sumptuous free-kick.

Three second-half strikes from the excellent Vydra, plus a late fifth from Alex Fernandez, ended the 10-man Terriers’ resistance, and set up a home fourth-round tie with Walsall.

Reading reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup last season for only the second time in their 145-year existence but they didn’t give the impression they wanted a repeat performance early on here.

There was a pretty sparse crowd at the Madejski Stadium and many of those who had braved the biting Berkshire cold were wishing they hadn’t bothered with 15 minutes played.

Huddersfield took command of this contest with two forward thrusts spaced seven minutes apart.

First, a searching ball from Joel Lynch in the back line wasn’t adequately dealt with and Nakhi Wells danced his way to the perimeter of the Reading penalty area.

Leading 2-0, the visitors were dealt a major blow when Jonathan Hogg was sent off by referee Oliver Langford

Lucas Piazon then pulled a crucial goal back for the Royals heading into half-time

Unable to work space to shoot, Wells allowed Paterson, who had arrived like an express train on the outside, to assume responsibility and he lashed a shot between Ali Al-Habsi and the near post.

Paterson had scored with a header in the original 2-2 draw up in west Yorkshire and once again proved a thorn in Reading’s side.

The few hundred travelling Terriers were on their feet once again shortly afterwards following a telling counter-attack.

Joe Lolley crossed from the left and the unmarked Emyr Huws sent a header clattering off the underside of the crossbar. The quick-witted Smith followed up with a prod shot but Al-Habsi pushed it clear.

Not for long. Smith retreated to the corner of the penalty box and, when Kyle Dempsey and Paterson worked the ball back, he took one touch before arrowing his shot in off the post.

Royals forward Matej Vydra equalises in the 57th minute during the hard--fought FA Cup encounter

Smith certainly picks his moments - that was the defender’s first professional goal for the club in his 94th appearance.

It could have been worse for the Royals - Wells was released by Huws and comfortably out-sprinted the home defence before Al-Habsi smothered, while the Omani keeper also pushed another Paterson effort away.

But the match then swung back in Reading’s favour as Hogg saw red.

Piazon, on loan at the Madejski from Chelsea this season, showed his Brazilian class by floating the resulting 25-yard free-kick into the top corner. Joe Murphy was rooted to the spot as it emerged into sight from behind the wall and swerved out of his reach in the same split-second.

Czech forward Vydra celebrates his strike with substitute Ola John during a thrilling second-half

Brian McDermott sent Reading out with fresh impetus after the interval and Hal Robson-Kanu forced a brilliant one-handed save from Murphy when he met Andy Taylor’s cross.

And the pressure paid off when Vydra snatched the equaliser just before the hour mark. Huddersfield had a corner cleared, with Ola John finding Robson-Kanu. His shot was punched away by Murphy but it sat up nicely for the Czech, on loan from Watford, to volley home.

And just four minutes later, inevitably, Reading hit the front when the alert Vydra turned in John’s low cross from the left wing. For the first time all evening, the 635 travelling fans from Yorkshire were silenced.

Vydra added further goals in the 61st and 90th minute to complete a memorable hat-trick

Alex Fernandez rounded off Reading's remarkable second-half revival with a long-range effort in extra time

But so long as the livewire Wells was on the field, Huddersfield had a chance and he lobbed Al-Habsi moments later only to see the ball cannon back off the bar.

Reading had an uneasy control and the final stages would have been more comfortable had Danny Williams found the target with a shot that fizzed past the post. Likewise when Chris Gunter fired over and Murphy pushed Robson-Kanu’s low shot away.

It mattered little. Vydra raced through a tiring Huddersfield defence and found the net with the aid of a Martin Cranie deflection to make it 4-2. They thought it was all over and it was now.

There was even time for a fifth as substitute Fernandez blasted home from 25 yards out.

Default Re: [2015/16] FA Cup

Liverpool 3-0 Exeter City: Joe Allen opens the scoring before youngsters Sheyi Ojo and Joao Teixeira secure victory as Jurgen Klopp's side set up FA Cup fourth-round tie against West Ham

*Liverpool earn 3-0 FA Cup third-round replay victory against League Two side Exeter City
*Joe Allen handed Jurgen Klopp's side an early lead with neat finish inside the six-yard box
*Jon Flanagan made first Liverpool appearance for 20 months after finally returning from injury
*Substitute Sheyi Ojo doubled Liverpool's advantage with a brilliant curling effort
*Joao Teixeira put Liverpool into a 3-0 lead to add to Exeter's FA Cup misery at Anfield
*Klopp's side now face a fourth-round clash against West Ham at Anfield on January 30

By the end, Jurgen Klopp was smiling and laughing. The job had been done, a record had been broken and a local favourite had returned to noisy acclaim.

This time, the kids were alright for Liverpool and not at any stage did they look like slipping up in their third round replay with Exeter, the gloss on the night being provided by Sheyi Ojo becoming the youngest player – at 18 years and 215 days – to score an FA Cup goal for the club and Jon Flanagan making a welcome first appearance for 619 days.

But this could have been so much more. Liverpool were a confident striker away from dismantling Exeter and it should not have taken them until the 77th-minute for them to put their League Two opponents away. That they didn’t was down to Christian Benteke. This should have been a night when the £32.5million striker engaged in target practice but, again, he missed his chance.

Then again, so did Exeter. How they will curse that they never went for broke in their initial meeting, when leading 2-1 late in the game. Liverpool were there for the taking in Devon and, even on Merseyside, had they shown some adventure, they could have made things uncomfortable. It was little wonder, then, Paul Tisdale, their long-serving manager, was so irked afterwards.

The money from this replay will, of course, will come in handy but would it not have been better for Exeter to have extra time and, possibly penalties, on their cabbage patch pitch? This replay was an inconvenience for the hosts and represented a mountain to climb for the visitors. And that’s exactly how it panned out.

Klopp also ensured the spine of his team was more robust than had been the case at St James Park. In came Joe Allen to provide calm to the midfield, Benteke provided the spearhead and Simon Mignolet replaced the calamitous Adam Bogdan in goal and from a very early stage, it was apparent that Exeter would be in for a long night.

Better on the ball and sharper in their movement, Liverpool began pressing and probing. The play wasn’t vintage, by any means, but it was precise enough to cause Exeter problems and within 10 minutes Liverpool had the lead, when Allen calmly applied the finishing touch from six yards to a cut back from Brad Smith, who had exchanged passes with Benteke.

When Allen scored last Wednesday against Arsenal, pouncing in the 90th-minute to secure a draw in one of the games of the season, Klopp set off down the touchline in wild celebration, whirling his arms and punching his delight. This time, there was barely an acknowledgement from the manager, whose hands stayed jammed in his pockets to protect against the cold.

So far, so good. It was a goal that should have triggered a flurry. Exeter, who themselves made four changes to the side that secured the initial 2-2 draw on January 8, have hardly been in sparkling form – they won in the league for the first time in six weeks at Leyton Orient last Saturday – but the problems for Liverpool this season have stemmed from their inability to punish teams.

Chief culprit was Benteke. If his selection here was designed to give him some target practice, it did not go according to plan, particularly in the first 45 minutes. There was a header over the bar from Joao Teixiera cross, a shot thrashed into the side netting and a free-kick that thundered horribly into the defensive wall. This, much to Anfield’s frustration, was a man trying too hard to impress.

Allen gave Liverpool the lead after some impressive build-up play from the home side

Liverpool were never in any danger of conceding before half-time – Exeter didn’t have a shot and Mignolet’s most awkward moment was dealing with a gentle, floated cross – but the failure to put daylight between themselves certainly led to a degree of anxiety in the stands. The closest Klopp side’s came to doing that was a 32nd minute shot that looped over the bar from Cameron Brannagan.

Coming out for the second half with more purpose, Liverpool started brightly and Jordon Ibe crashed a left-footed drive against the underside of the crossbar in the 54th minute, moments after Flanagan had been introduced for the first time since May 2014. They call him ’the Scouse Cafu’ and even the Brazilian World Cup winner tweeted his delight at seeing Flanagan back.

Had that chance bounced down a fraction further over the line, Liverpool would have been home and dry. The same was true also when Benteke muscled his way onto a ball from Brannagan but ended up taking too many touches – the sign of a striker whose confidence is brittle –and allowing Exeter goalkeeper Bobby Olejnik the chance to save.

Evetually, they could not resist any longer and first Ojo created history with a left-footed curling shot that left Klopp beaming. Next up is West Ham on January 30.

‘A couple of weeks ago, I couldn’t imagine I would enjoy an FA Cup replay but I did,’ said Klopp. ‘So thank you, FA Cup!’

How long the smile lasts will depend entirely on whether Liverpool can finally click and show the ruthlessness he is demanding. Benteke needs to do it more than most.
