O'HARA OUT TO GRASP INTERNATIONAL CHANCE

Kieran O'Hara is currently on international duty with Republic of Ireland Under-21s as he continues to develop his skills as a goalkeeper.

The Manchester United man is competing for the gloves at Reserves level and kept goal in the friendly at Brentford on Saturday. Shining in the 1-1 local derby draw with City at the Etihad Stadium in September meant a lot to the Urmston-born youngster, who qualifies for Ireland through his grandparents.

"It was such a good experience to play at the Etihad," he told ManUtd.com. "The derby is always special for a Manchester lad. I know the importance of those kind of games. It's always good to help the team anyway when you've not had much to do all game but, in this case, I made a last-minute save which proved crucial."

Loan spells with Trafford and Morecambe helped hone O'Hara's talents and teach him about life away from the Aon Training Complex. Psychologically, he was naturally put under pressure in men's football and it provided a fabulous education.

"You learn a lot at that level with Trafford," he said. "Going into a dressing room as a kid, knowing nothing about the men's game and coming away with a lot of experience of playing games and having been in a different environment. I've had that further with the other loans, especially at Morecambe.

"It was a big challenge going there as a no.2 and trying to fight to have games. I made my debut against Northampton at Sixfields and my best performance came against Leyton Orient when our goalkeeper [Barry Roche] was sent off after only 10 minutes and I saved a penalty.

"It's league football, playing in front of crowds, for points and you're under pressure. As a young goalkeeper, people maybe target you but you've got to deal with it. It happens and you've got to be good enough to cope with it. I grew more comfortable as I went on at Morecambe and it helped me develop my overall game."

The call from Ireland was proof of the increased exposure that loan moves can bring young players and the 20-year-old is up for the challenge.

"My name is a bit of a giveaway," he said of his eligibility. "My grandparents on my dad's side were both born in Galway. The call came towards the end of last season when the Under-21 coach Noel King gave the Morecambe manager [Jim Bentley] a ring to ask if I'd be interested in getting involved.

"I was more than happy because it was an international call-up. When I was about 17, I had England Schools games against Scotland, Republic of Ireland and Wales but my dad's happy now with it being his side of the family and my mum is proud as well.

"It's great experience being involved in international football and more games, a different type of football completely, so I hope I can grab it with both hands.

"Going out on loan is a good opportunity for people to see you and it does gain you exposure, for sure. When more people see your name and are able to watch you play, they see what you can do and how you handle the pressure of being out in the league."

Ireland's Under-21s are playing two friendlies in Spain, against Czech Republic on Saturday and Slovakia on Tuesday, and O'Hara is competing with Anderlecht's Liam Bossin for the keeper spot.

Kieran O'Hara joined Manchester United as an eight-year-old and signed his first professional contract in 2014.

The young keeper represented the Reds at the Aegon Future Cup earlier in his fledgling career and helped the team progress to the final, only to be beaten by hosts Ajax on penalties.

A work-experience loan with Trafford FC provided invaluable experience and showed he is capable of progressing at United. Goalkeeper coach Alan Fettis described the success of the spell with the nearby non-league outfit: "I must say it was a great experience for Kieran and we’ve been really pleased with how he has progressed and matured. I've just seen him grow physically and mentally."

Elevation into the Under-21 ranks saw him make one appearance, which came in the final game of the season at Manchester City, when the Blues won the mini-derby 3-1. He was involved in the squad on a number of occasions and also spent some time away from United on a work-experience loan basis.

Another temporary deal was set up in the closing hours of the summer transfer window as he joined Morecambe in order to gain more valuable experience and he rejoined the Shrimps on the same basis in January 2016. O'Hara joined a fine debut second time around as he came on as a substitute in the 13th minute and saved Jay Simpson's penalty for Leyton Orient with his first touch.

The former English Schools FA Under-18 international made five appearances in total for Morecambe and will be better for the experience. "I don’t think anyone at United doesn’t think it is the biggest club in the world," he said during his loan spell. "They explain the history through the years, where we’ve been and that’s a huge part of the club."

In September 2016, he received a first call-up for Republic of Ireland at Under-21 level.

"He was a schoolboy scholar and attended Ashton-on-Mersey school's Sixth Form, and also went out to Trafford FC on a work-experience loan to play some games. I must say it was a great experience for Kieran and we’ve been really pleased with how he has progressed and matured.

"I think he was a bit apprehensive in the first instance when we asked him to go as he wasn’t really sure about the reasoning behind it. He was saying: ‘You’re sending me to Trafford but I want to play for Manchester United.’ I can understand that, at the age of 16 or 17, but he took it on board and he began playing men’s football in front of crowds where the games actually mean something. He’s had to put up with a lot of ‘stick’ from the lads in the dressing room, but it is all part of his education which he needed to experience. He did that and I’ve just seen him grow physically and mentally.

"It was early for a loan move but it was something I did when I was a similar age to Kieran. I played on a Saturday, with the youth team and Reserves at Glentoran, and went on to play Irish league football at 18. I think you need to do it. It doesn’t matter what age you are, it’s something you have to experience and I don’t think you get enough of that at Academy level.

"I was speaking with Sam Johnstone recently, and he explains that the loan move to Scunthorpe United was a big learning experience for him. He understood what league football was about and looks back and agrees that is when he really matured.

"Kieran has done the same and he has been rewarded with his first professional contract."

Manchester United custodian Kieran O'Hara was once again the surprise name in Jose Mourinho's squad which travelled to Russia on Tuesday afternoon.

O'Hara was pictured entering Manchester Airport alongside Anthony Martial after Mourinho elected to bring the 20-year-old with him for United's Europa League last 16 first leg clash.

The shot stopper also made the trip to France when the Red Devils beat St Etienne 1-0 but he was left out of the matchday squad as Mourinho opted to start Sergio Romero and had David de Gea on the bench.

O'Hara is again expected to be left out of United's matchday squad as Mourinho will want to call on one of his experienced keepers for a European clash which could lead to their only hope of playing Champions League football next season.

However it is a sign that Mourinho wants O'Hara to be in and around the first-team picture, learning from two international stars in De Gea and Romero.

O'Hara has been afforded the opportunity as both Joel Pereira and Dean Henderson are currently sidelined through injury while Sam Johnstone is on loan at Aston Villa.

So who is O'Hara? He joined Manchester United in July 2012 and signed his first professional deal with the Premier League giants two years later.

He found reserve-team football hard to come by due to Pereira's progression so he has had to bide his team out on loan.

O'Hara has been shipped out on a temporary basis five times with the keeper spending time at Trafford, AFC Fylde, Stockport and Morecambe on two occasions.

His latest spell at Morecambe saw him join the Shrimps on January 12, 2016 until the end of the season.

With Pereira and Henderson currently out of the reckoning, O'Hara is hoping to impress Mourinho and his coaching staff while training with the likes of De Gea, Romero and goalkeeper coach Emilio Alvarez.

If he does well, O'Hara could travel away with United for the club's annual pre-season tour.

O'Hara has decided to represent the Republic of Ireland rather than England so he will not be filling Joe Hart's boots anytime soon.

He told manutd.com about his: 'My name is a bit of a giveaway.

O'HARA: WHY I'M LEARNING FROM THE BEST

Manchester United goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara is learning all the time from David De Gea and Sergio Romero as he picks up tips from the international no.1s while travelling abroad with them.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 stopper made the trip for the Europa League ties at Saint-Etienne and FC Rostov and clearly enjoyed working alongside two masters of the goalkeeping trade. As De Gea and Romero have different styles, there is plenty for the 22-year-old to analyse and absorb into his own game.

"It’s been a good experience to get away with the first team," O'Hara told MUTV. "It’s a new environment for me to learn from goalkeepers like David De Gea and Sergio Romero who, for me, are top, top keepers. David, in my opinion, is the best in the world and you’ve seen the way Sergio steps in for David and does an amazing job. He is a top goalkeeper too.

"There is a lot to learn for me personally off both of them. They have two very different styles of goalkeeping and I can take stuff from what David does well and Sergio does well. It’s good for me to be around them and take anything I can from what they’re doing in training and the games.

"David is quick, while Sergio has a much bigger frame and he can use his height more than David. But every goalkeeper has his own individual style. I think it’s good that they’re different. It’s better to have two different keepers you can swap and change for different games."

O'Hara, who hails from nearby Urmston, appreciates there is far more to being a top keeper than merely protecting the goal on a matchday.

"It’s not just learning stuff from them on the pitch," he said. "It’s the way they hold themselves off the pitch. It’s the things they do and how professional they are, the way they prepare for games a day before and to see what they’re doing leading up to the game on the day, what they’re doing in the warm-up and stuff like that. It’s something I can definitely learn as well.

"There is a mental side to it. I think it’s a lot of mental strength because you’re on your own in a way when you’re in goal. You have to think, if a goal goes in, that you must put it behind you. That’s a lot about mental strength, to be able to put that behind you and carry on with the game and not let it affect what you do next.

"I think that’s about experience and time to build up that mental strength. The more games you play, the more experience you get and I think you become better at it as games go on."

The goalkeepers' union always stick together and it is no different at Old Trafford, with all the men between the posts aiding each other on a regular basis.

"I think the goalkeepers here are all quite good friends," he added. "We speak to each other and help each other over different things in training and games. If someone sees something, they will help each other out and I think that’s good and really positive."

O'HARA BENEFITING FROM INTERNATIONAL SPELL

Manchester United keeper Kieran O'Hara believes playing international football is helping to speed up his learning process.

Ahead of the Reserves' clash at West Ham's London Stadium on Sunday, which is being shown live on MUTV at 13:00 BST, the 21-year-old spoke to the official club channel about his progress. He was on the bench for the final Premier League game of last season against Crystal Palace and has been a regular for Ricky Sbragia's men this term.

Representing Republic of Ireland is clearly an honour for the Manchester-born youngster, who qualifies through his grandparents. O'Hara trained with the senior squad ahead of the vital 1-0 win at Wales that secured a World Cup play-off spot for Martin O'Neill's men.

"Obviously at Manchester United, from a young age, the main aim and dream is always to be as close to the first team as you can," he told MUTV. "Last year, I had a taste of that and it made me think: 'This is what I want to be doing'. I'm going to give 100 per cent every single day to try to make this happen and become the best goalkeeper I can.

"It's always an honour to represent your country. It's a big thing for me and I feel it's a good challenge because it helps me develop quicker. As a goalkeeper, you're learning new things in a new environment and it's a real positive for me. Personally, I can gain recognition playing international football.

"It's tough and a higher level but you get used to it. The more I play at that level, the more I am going to develop into a better goalkeeper, which is obviously what I want to become."

O'Hara is also in the perfect place to continue his education on a daily basis, by working with top stars David De Gea and Sergio Romero.

"United historically have always had world-class keepers and nothing's changed," he added. "For me, David is the best goalkeeper in the world. I think a lot of people would agree.

"It's positive having him there as you can learn so much when you're training with the best in the world every single day. It can only rub off and make you a better keeper. And Sergio is an international keeper and, for me, is also world class.

"To have two world-class keepers at the same club is quite rare and it's only going to make me better by being around them, training with them every day, seeing how they do things, how they train, how they hold themselves. It will develop me personally into a better keeper."

NEW CONTRACT FOR KIERAN O'HARA

Kieran O'Hara has signed a new contract with Manchester United that will run until 2020.

The 21-year-old, who has been a regular in the Reserves this season, has been rewarded for his progress with fresh terms.

Although born locally, the goalkeeper represents Republic of Ireland at international level and has forced his way into their Under-21 squad.

"Since I joined United, it has been everything I expected it to be," he said. "The club gives you all the guidance that you need from experienced coaches to improve every single day.

"But I know that the hard work has just started and that I need to continue to listen and give everything in training and the matches we have coming up. I know I’m at the right place to continue my development as a young player and I’m thrilled to have signed a new contract."

WHAT'S NEXT FOR UNITED KEEPER O'HARA?

Manchester United goalkeeper Kieran O'Hara will wait to see what plans are in the pipeline for him when he returns for pre-season work at the Aon Training Complex.

The Under-23s' no.1 was shortlisted for the Denzil Haroun Player of the Year trophy and received a first senior call-up for Republic of Ireland, even if it was a difficult campaign as a whole for the Reserves.

With a number of keepers on the books of the club, any plans will be finalised in due course, with O'Hara admitting he feels ready to tackle league football on a regular basis. The 22-year-old has had previous temporary moves away from United, including two spells at Morecambe, where he made his senior bow in 2016

“Hopefully, I will go out on loan to gain some valuable experience that way,” O'Hara told ManUtd.com. “Clearly, it's down to the coaching staff and the [Under-23s] manager. Ricky [Sbragia], Nicky Butt and, obviously, the manager will decide what they think is best for me and my development.
”But, like I say, next season, I think I'll be ready to go out on loan to gain valuable experience in the league and really kick on.

“A loan wouldn't be anything new to me. I've had loan spells before and they really helped me and pushed me to where I am now. Hopefully, it will improve my experience even more and I can learn more game management and things like that.

”I feel it's definitely about getting that experience of playing in the league, week in and week out, in front of fans in stadiums and really pushing towards the point of playing in competitive divisions and gaining experience from all different things that maybe you don't get in the Under-23s.

“Alternatively, I have travelled with the first team and I have to thank the manager [Jose] and his staff for that. That’s a tremendous learning curve for me as you see how they conduct themselves on such a huge platform in front of millions of people with everybody watching your every step. These are the things that every young player dreams about but, as I have already said, I will leave everything for the coaches and staff to decide.”

The progress with Republic of Ireland, under Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane, is a source of great satisfaction for the Manchester-born keeper, who qualifies for the country through his father.

“It was definitely an honour to get a senior call-up and it feels good that my performances for the Reserves have been recognised by the international management,” he explained. “I feel it was a massive part of my season to get that call-up and I'm obviously very proud.

”They were really nice guys and Colin Doyle, who is at Bradford City, is quite a bit older than me so he has a lot of experience of the league and international level. He has a few call-ups on his CV, so he helped me quite a lot.“

Overall, O'Hara is philosophical after a hard year in Premier League 2 and is looking forward to taking the next step in his career.

“I feel it's been a disappointing season, overall, and I guess there are some games where the boys have under-performed, don't get me wrong, but some positives have come out of it,” he added. “I feel, in the Reserves squad, a lot of players have developed and pushed themselves to the next level and, a lot of the time, the league is development football.

“Obviously, at Manchester United, we always want to win games, it's in our DNA, but I feel like the development of individuals is more important.

”Personally, I think I can be very proud of what I've achieved over the season. I feel like it has been a tough season as a team but individuals have come through and developed, I'm one of those, and the international call-up was a massive string to my bow if you like, so I feel very happy with how it has gone.“
