Default The Next Flop ?

Nani leaves Manchester United, but he wasn't the only Sir Alex Ferguson signing who failed to make his mark at Old Trafford

* Nani joins Sporting Lisbon on season-long loan from United
* Portuguese winger has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford
* Nani one of many Sir Alex Ferguson signings who has not been a success

Massimo Taibi

He cost £4.5m in 1999 and played only the four times. Dubbed the Blind Venetian by the tabloid press, Taibi returned to Italy within six months. His blooper against Southampton, as the ball squirmed under his body, ensures his name will never be forgotten.

Blooper: Massimo Taibi is remembered for his howler against Southampton

Mark Bosnich

Signed from Aston Villa to replace Peter Schmeichel but beset by injury problems and inconsistency. In his book last year, Ferguson described Bosnich as a 'terrible professional'.

'We played down at Wimbledon and Bosnich was tucking into everything: sandwiches, soups, steaks. He was going through the menu. We arrived back in Manchester, and Mark was on mobile phone to a Chinese restaurant to order a takeaway. Is there no end to you? I just couldn't make an impact on him.'

Replaced as United's first-choice keeper by Fabien Barthez.

Damning: Mark Bosnich was described as a 'terrible professional' by Sir Alex Ferguson

William Prunier

Looked like Jaap Stam but played nothing like him. Horror show against Spurs in a 4-1 defeat sealed his fate. In his autobiography, Ferfuson recounted a conversation with Patrice Evra.

'William Prunier was another one I was mocked for. Even Patrice Evra, in that high-pitched way, said to me one day: 'Boss, did you have William Prunier?' Ryan Giggs' face dropped as he waited for the response. 'Aye, we had him on trial once,' I snapped. 'On trial?' Evra squeaked back. 'A two-game trial?'

'Yes, and it was a disaster.' Ferguson admitted.

Neil Whitworth

A centre-half signed in the early days by Ferguson in a £45,000 deal from Wigan. Played only once in four years for the club in a 1-1 draw at Southampton in March 1991.

Eric Djemba-Djemba

So bad they named him twice, Djemba-Djemba was signed to add steel to the United midfield but departed after 18 months. He is, however, an FA Cup winner after being part of the United side that lifted the trophy in 2004. Good quiz question, that. What has Djemba-Djemba won that Edwin van der Sar, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand have not?

Misfit: Eric Djemba-Djemba helped Manchester United win the FA Cup in 2004 but was soon out of the club

Juan Sebastian Veron

The £28.1m signing who was billed as a superstar. Could never quite get to grips with the physicality of the English game and despite some magical moments in the Champions League, he underwhelmed. United did, however, reclaim £15m when he was sold to Chelsea two seasons after his arrival.

Costly: Juan Sebastian Veron never justified the large transfer fee Manchester United payed for him

Kleberson

A Brazilian World Cup winner in 2002, United spent £6m to bring Kleberson to Old Trafford from Atletico Paranaense one year later, seeing off competition from Leeds United. Ferguson said at the time: 'One of the reasons we sold Veron was because we knew we were getting Kleberson - that shows how highly we regard his talent.'

He was the first Brazilian to sign for United. Now we'll get onto the second one...

Big stage: Kleberson won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002 before moving to Old Trafford

Anderson

Signed from Porto in a deal worth in excess of £19m, Anderson had previously been tracked by Chelsea and Real Madrid. His first season was a success as United won the Champions League in 2008 but he failed to kick on, suffering injury problems and a visible lack of fitness.

He was voted best player at the Under 17 World Championships in 2005 but is now surplus to requirements at Manchester United and will be sold if United can find a buyer.

Surplus: Anderson failed to kick on at Manchester United after his big-money move from Porto

Liam Miller

Signed on a free transfer from Celtic in 2004. In Ireland, they referred to him as 'the future of Irish football' or the 'next Roy Keane.' Scored only twice - in League Cup ties against Barnet and Crewe - and ended up at Sunderland under Keane, where he fared better but was eventually transfer-listed.

Keane said: 'If you are driving to work don't get in the car with Liam Miller because he has more car crashes than anyone I know. It's nothing to do with him as a player or as a lad. If he is late once or twice, even three or four times, maybe well and good, but when it is five, six or seven times then you have to draw the line.'

High hopes: Liam Miller was described as 'the future of Irish football' and the 'next Roy Keane'

Bebe

The most bizarre of Ferguson's signings, brought in to the club on the recommendation of Carlos Quieroz despite the manager never having watched him either live or on television. The £7m winger did not start a Premier League game in his four-year spell with the club, exiting this summer to Benfica.

Blind faith: Ferguson never watched Bebe play but still spent £7m to bring him to Manchester United

Ralph Milne

At an LMA dinner in 2009, Ferguson admitted Milne, who scored only three goals in his first season at the club, was his worst signing: 'I only paid £170,000 but I still get condemned for it.'

The forward exited United in 1991 and joined Sing Tao, the now defunct Hong Kong club.

David Bellion

A £1.5m gamble from Sunderland in 2003. Had raw pace and a decent finisher but some way short of the required quality. Scored eight goals in two seasons before being moved on.

Dry: David Bellion scored eight goals in two seasons at Old Trafford before being sold

Dong Fangzhou

The first Chinese player to play for United arrived in 2004 but could not play until 2006 due to work permit issues. Appeared once in the League Cup in a 2-0 defeat at home by Coventry and also came on a substitute in one game in the Champions League. His contract was terminated in 2008. He did not score any goals but he may well have sold some shirts. Now starring for Hebei Zhongji.

Absence: Dong Fangzhou didn't feature for United for his first two years due to work permit problems

Wilfried Zaha

Fergie's final signing has endured a miserable time at Old Trafford and is still to start a Premier League game. David Moyes felt that Zaha's work on the training ground was short of the required standard and he was loaned to Cardiff in January, where he struggled once more.

He was part of the group that toured the USA but was not in the United squad that faced Swansea last weekend and could leave the club in the next fortnight.

Underwhelming: Wilfried Zaha arrived from Crystal Palace with a big reputation but hasn't broke through

Diego Forlan

The Uruguayan forward signed from Independiente in 2002 but took 27 matches to score his first goal. He went on to score 17 in 95 appearances and is most famously remembered for scoring twice in a victory at Liverpool.
'He came from Uruguay, and made the Scousers cry,' went the ditty. Since leaving, he proved himself as a brilliant goalscorer with Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.

Wait: Diego Forlan took 27 matches to score his first goal for Manchester United

Manchester United's 10 Worst Summer Transfer Deals of All Time

Manchester United have used the transfer market to bring in some wonderful players in their time, but not all of them can be winners.

The transfer market is a tricky thing. Sometimes a signing looks good on paper, but is not able to do the business. Sometimes your high profile signing gets injured. Sometimes they do not like the Manchester weather.

Some of the transfers on this list were actually sensible gambles, which did not work out. Some appeared doomed from the start. Some burned brightly and then faded away, some never caught fire to start with.

All of these signings come from the last 20 years, as it is very difficult to assess the quality or value of older signings without having seen them play.

There are a plethora of options for honourable mentions. Sir Alex Ferguson was fond of a gamble, and they do not always pay off. Michael Owen and Liam Miller escape the top ten by virtue of being free (and Owen by virtue of *that* goal against City). Kleberson could have a good claim to a spot.

There would even be those who would argue Dimitar Berbatov belongs on the list. They, however, clearly do not appreciate the finer things in life. The hat-trick against Liverpool was almost worth the price of his transfer alone.

Without further ado, here a

10. Owen Hargreaves

Owen Hargreaves sneaks onto the list at 10. It may be slightly harsh to include him given how much of a contribution he made in his first season.

However, he is worthy of a place because of how short-lived his effectiveness was. After helping United to the 2008 Champions League title, Hargreaves was afflicted by injury after injury until he eventually left the club.

Signed from Bayern Munich for £17 million, his prior injuries were a warning of what was to come.

In spite of the trophies he won, the years that followed have condemned his acquisition to the status of an unsuccessful transfer. He is spared a higher berth on the list because if he had stayed healthy, he would have been a perfect fit for the club.

9. Marouane Fellaini

Everything about the arrival of Marouane Fellaini at United seemed wrong.

The fee was more than it would have been if United had acted sooner, as Bleacher Report's Ben Blackmore explains here.

The player did not appear to be of the calibre required.

The move came after a summer where United had been linked with Cesc Fabregas, Thiago Alacantara and even Cristiano Ronaldo. Instead of a glamorous new arrival, the sense of "Evertonisation" that had begun with the appointment of David Moyes and the arrival of his back-room staff was compounded.

Fellaini is not higher up this list because his time at United has not yet come to an end, and the possibility exists of him becoming a useful member of Louis van Gaal’s side.

That seems a long shot, and he had been linked this summer with a move away from the club. Injury looks to have put pay to that move, per Ian Herbert of the Independent.

Fellaini’s transfer is likely to be remembered as one which only really benefited novelty wig sellers. And possibly Everton, considering the £27.5 million cost, per the link above.

8. Karel Poborsky

Never sign a player on the back of a good international tournament, goes the old footballing cliche. Even worse, presumably, is to sign a player on the back of one good goal at a tournament. Karel Poborsky was signed for £3.5 million from Slavia Prague after Euro ’96.

During that tournament he had scored a remarkable goal, a scooped lob which remains and all-time classic.

Of course, Sir Alex did not just sign him on the basis of that goal, but there were times when it felt like it.

His signing was not an out-and-out disaster, but it personifies a certain brand of instinctive signings of which Ferguson was fond. Some worked well, some did not. Poborsky, sadly, falls into the latter category.

7. Massimo Taibi

Massimo Taibi was signed for £4.5 million in 1999, played four times for United and conceded 11 goals. His name has become a byword for goalkeeping instability at United.

He would be higher up in the list but for the fact that in two of those games he actually played quite well, and there was every reason to suspect he could have been a good signing. His confidence took a hit in those early games and never got a chance to recover.

6. Alexander Buttner

Alexander Buttner was signed for an undisclosed fee in Sir Alex’s last summer transfer window.

He had a couple of good games for United, notably the home leg of last season’s Champions League quarter final against Bayern Munich.

However, few were surprised when he left the club this summer. Before he arrived at United, Buttner had been close to a move to Southampton, but that had fallen through under confusing circumstances, per the Daily Mail.

He had not attracted a great deal of attention from Europe’s elite clubs. This article from the Guardian from just before the Southampton deal collapsed cited Fulham, Queens Park Rangers and Werder Bremen as the teams interested in his services.

It felt very odd when he arrived at United, and nothing in his performances changed that feeling very much.

So, in spite of his moments of promise, he belongs midway up this list as a transfer that felt very unlikely to work out, and did not.

5. David Bellion

David Bellion cost Manchester United £2 million in the summer of 2003. According to this article by Chris Bevan of BBC Sport, he was once regarded as the heir apparent to Thierry Henry in the French national side.

It turns out, he was not said heir apparent. His time at United was a fairly spectacular flop, as he started just five league games in three years.

He was bought for his potential, and was not able to live up to it. If proof were needed that gambling on young players does some times pay off, though, during the same summer, Manchester United took a punt on a promising Portuguese winger, called Cristiano Ronaldo.

4. Gabriel Obertan

Unlike Bellion, Gabriel Obertan’s signing was a reasonably clear cut error. Obertan had not been spectacularly impressive in his run in the first team at Bordeaux, from whom United signed him for an undisclosed fee.

Obertan possessed plenty of pace, but rarely contributed much beyond that. Unlike Bellion, there was less evidence of raw talent, and the Obertan transfer seemed doomed from the start.

He has been unable to make much of an impression even at a lower level in the Premier League at Newcastle United, playing just three times in the league last season.

Unquestionably one of Sir Alex’s worst transfer errors, Obertan never looked like to have the quality to be a success at United, and indeed, it turned out he did not.

3. Eric Djemba-Djemba

Eric Djemba-Djemba was such an unsuccessful signing at United that Gary Neville uses his name as short hand for a fallow period in Sir Alex’s career, calling the mid 2000s the "Djemba-Djemba years" (h/t ESPN.co.uk).

Signed in an attempt to improve United’s midfield (a familiar theme ever since), Djemba-Djemba arrived for a fee of £3.5 million, but did not represent good value.

If your career at a club means that your name becomes a defining term for its failings, you know you have been an unsuccessful signing.

There may be an argument to suggest that, say, Bellion or Obertan belong above Djemba-Djemba, but since no-one calls them the "Obertan years" Djemba-Djemba earns this unwanted honour.

2. Anderson

Anderson should have been a great signing. As a youngster, he was a skilled attacking midfielder, with bags full of tricks. However, his time at the club has seen his standing diminish season upon season.

Last year he was sent on loan to Fiorentina, and whilst he was away, his shirt number given was given to Juan Mata.

Much like Owen Hargreaves, Anderson's first season at the club was impressive, but since then he has only flattered to deceive.

He is so high on the list because the club have had so much difficulty getting rid of him, and he has contributed so little in recent seasons. It has been six years since he was a consistently top-level performer at United, and yet he has continued to be part of the squad.

Ultimately, £20 million has not been recouped by his performances, and he has become a by-word for dead wood in United's squad. One excellent season does not make up for that, and he has earned his place so close to the top of this list.

1. Bebe

In December 2011, David Conn of the Guardian wrote an article looking at the mechanics behind this truly bizarre transfer.

In it, he says: "Shortly after Bebe joined United, Ferguson lambasted as 'vicious' reports that Bebe was too raw a footballer amid the polished skills exhibited by the senior players at Old Trafford."

However, it did indeed come to pass, that Bebe was too raw a footballer to succeed at United.

Conn returned to the subject in 2012, once Portuguese police had said they were investigating the transfer.

It was a shocking deal, a player that almost no one had heard of arriving at Old Trafford for a hefty fee.

The fairytale aspect of it, a man who had lived in a care home, and been homeless, arriving on the biggest stage, was extremely appealing.

Sadly, there was no happily ever after, and, having hardly played a game for the club, the curious case of the £7.4 million purchase of Bebe goes down as the worst transfer in United's history.

Default Re: The Next Flop ?

Manchester United's problems started with Sir Alex Ferguson... the Old Trafford club are paying the price for his dud signings

* Louis van Gaal has arrived at Old Trafford to find a squad desperately short of quality
* The recruitment statistics of Ferguson's last six years in charge make for startling viewing
* Ferguson invested in the region of £160m on players he believed would form the club's future
* Senior sources at Old Trafford admitted that the 2013 Premier League title surprised them
* Van Gaal has inherited a squad without a fully functioning defensive line

Louis van Gaal isn’t the type of man to look backwards when looking forwards is available. To find the early reasons why his immediate future is log jammed with problems, though, we do need to look over our shoulders, back to a time when Manchester United were winning trophies and widening cracks were being covered by shiny silver and gold paper.

That was when today’s troubles really started at Old Trafford, back in the glorious days of Sir Alex Ferguson. It sounds ungrateful to say it; impertinent, rude and sacrilegious. But it’s true, nevertheless.

United continued to win trophies during Ferguson’s latter years at United but the future, it transpires, was not adequately being taken care of. This is the future that Van Gaal has inherited and one reason why the current United manager has arrived at Old Trafford to find a squad so desperately short of quality.

Frustrated figure: Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal watches his side lose 4-0 to MK Dons

Tuesday night’s embarrassing defeat at Milton Keynes cannot be blamed on one individual. It contained dreadful playing errors.

Nevertheless, it is impossible to view the current picture of United’s predicament without placing their greatest ever manager somewhere in it as the recruitment statistics of Ferguson’s last six years in charge make for startling viewing.

During that time, United won four Barclays Premier League titles, two League Cups and a Champions League as a core of previously and expertly recruited players – Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra, Park Ji-sung, Michael Carrick, Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney - combined seamlessly with the last vestiges of the Class of ’92 to ensure Ferguson’s remarkable team remained eminent.

Quote:
FERGIE'S FLOPS

Nani (£17m)
Anderson (£27m)
Ashley Young (£17m)
Bebe (£7.4m)
Owen Hargreaves (£17m)
Tomasz Kuszczak (£2m)
Zoran Tosic (£7m)
Dimitar Berbatov (£30m)
Gabriel Obertan (£3m)
Mame Biram Diouf (£3m)
Javier Hernandez (£6m)
Chris Smalling (£7m)
Nick Powell (£6m)
Alexander Buttner (£4m)
Wilfried Zaha (£15m)
During those last six years, however, Ferguson, despite the restrictions of Glazer ownership, invested in the region of £160m of the club’s money on a string of players he believed would form the club’s future.

Some have certainly contributed during better times but none have ultimately endured and this, in hindsight, represents the beginning of a decline exacerbated by David Moyes’ erratic season last time round.

Between the summer of 2007 and the January of 2013, Ferguson’s United bought Nani (£17m), Anderson (£27m), Ashley Young (£17m), Bebe (£7m), Owen Hargreaves (£17m), Tomasz Kuszczak (£2m), Zoran Tosic (£7m), Dimitar Berbatov (£30m), Gabriel Obertan (£3m), Mame Biram Diouf (£3m), Javier Hernandez (£6m), Chris Smalling (£7m), Nick Powell (£6m), Alexander Buttner (£4m) and Wilfried Zaha (£15m).

Set against those purchases is the arrival of the more successful Rafael da Silva, Antonio Valencia, Phil Jones, David de Gea and, of course, Robin van Persie.

To question Ferguson’s legacy in this way is a very uncomfortable thing to do. It is more fashionable, more palatable, to blame Moyes entirely.

Nevertheless it is equally difficult to examine the two lists of players above and ignore the very obvious connection between then and now. Ferguson’s incredible man management skills endured to the end but his judgement in the transfer market seemingly did not.

During his latter years, United were winning. In reality, though, they were also hanging on as the world changed around them. Paul Scholes retired once and was lured back, eventually quitting for good at the age of 37. Ryan Giggs played until he was 40. There were reasons for this.

Anybody who saw United play regularly during that time will have recognised the marginal regression in their football that was not always hidden beneath generally positive results. Back then, Manchester City and Chelsea were coming on strong and players like Van Persie and De Gea were never going to hold back the tide on their own.

Senior sources at Old Trafford have admitted that the 2013 title, Ferguson’s last, surprised them. They didn’t expect it. They had seen the quality of the squad wane.

A poor summer in the market after Moyes’ appointment didn’t help and had Van Gaal’s predecessor inspired his players a little more maybe United would have squeezed another year out of Vidic and Evra.

Regardless of that, Van Gaal’s first challenge now is to arrest this decline and then find first gear. Certainly, what he has found will have alarmed him.

The Dutch coach has inherited, for example, a Premier League squad without a fully functioning defensive line and he must ask himself how a club of United’s standing and stature has allowed that to happen.

This is why he suggested after Tuesday’s failure at MK Dons that results this season haven’t surprised him. Van Gaal does do a neat line in sarcasm but this wasn’t one of them.

Looking ahead to Saturday’s Premier League game at Burnley, Van Gaal’s most pressing concern will be his system and how to fit record signing Angel di Maria in to it.

Just as Juan Mata struggled to fit in to Moyes’ team last January, so Di Maria does not look a natural fit for the 3-4-1-3 formation that Van Gaal has placed so much faith in thus far.

Van Gaal hinted after Tuesday’s game that he may change his tactics and indeed he may have to. The 62-year-old has attempted to engrain the system in all levels of football at United’s Carrington training ground and clearly saw a long-term future in the formation he used to great effect with Holland at the World Cup.

Already, though, it is looking shot to pieces. United’s defenders do not look comfortable with it and Di Maria arrives as a player seemingly ready-made to slip in to 4-3-3.

Van Gaal will surely be a big enough man to perform a volte face if he needs to but any move away from his current formation would leave him with a problem connected not with dented pride but where to play his captain Rooney and indeed the aforementioned Mata.

Sketch a United starting XI on to paper and it will look competitive enough. Injuries are currently hurting them to the extent that they appear worse than they actually are.

Van Gaal is not fooled, though. There are fissions in this squad that will not be solved in one transfer window. The cumulative effect of six years of questionable judgement now weighs heavy.

Default Re: The Next Flop ?

Eric Djemba Djemba? Or Angel Di Maria? As Alexis Sanchez finally departs Old Trafford for Inter Milan on loan... is the £560,000 per-week flop Manchester United's WORST ever signing?

* How many Manchester United flops can you remember down the years?
* Sportsmail take a look at the top 10 after Alexis Sanchez left for Inter Milan
* Names on our list include Bebe and Juan Sebastian Veron but who else makes it?

Manchester United have had their fair share of flops down the years.

There have been some atrocious bit-part players under Sir Alex Ferguson and big-money disasters under the tenures of Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho.

Alexis Sanchez, who cost United £560,000 a week (£300,000 base salary, £100,000 a week in image rights and £160,000 in other bonuses), finally departed for Inter Milan after a nightmare 18 months at the club that returned just five goals in 45 games.

Sportsmail have taken a look at United's top 10 WORSE ever signings following Sanchez's exit, but does the Chilean bag the No 1 spot?

10. Fred (£52m... but has time to prove doubters wrong)

After just one season in the Premier League, it is perhaps a tad harsh for Fred to be involved already in an 'all-time flop list'.

However, given the money spent on the Brazilian last summer when he signed from Shakhtar Donetsk, and the weight of expectation which therefore surrounded his arrival, it was a debut year to forget for the 26-year-old.

For a creative, dynamic midfielder, a total of one goal and one assist for the entire season is somewhat shambolic.

After Jose Mourinho tried and toiled with Fred, he struggled for consistent minutes under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and has not yet featured for the Red Devils this season, with Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba and Andreas Pereira preferred in a midfield trio.

Fred has struggled to make an impact at Old Trafford since his £52m move last summer

9. Eric Djemba Djemba (£3.5m, so bad they named him twice)

Remember him? In the summer of 2003, Sir Alex Ferguson swooped for unknown Nantes midfielder Eric Djemba Djemba, seeing enough potential in the Cameroonian's combative style to tout him as a potential successor for then-captain Roy Keane.

What followed was underwhelming to say the least – Djemba Djemba couldn't break into the team, and made just 39 appearances in two seasons.

Severely out of his depth, he was sold to Aston Villa in 2005 for a measly £1.5m, where he did little to restore his reputation in the Premier League. Since then, his career has taken him to Qatar, India, Indonesia, Serbia, Denmark, Israel and Scotland with St Mirren.

There were high hopes for unknown quantity Eric Djemba Djemba but he failed to perform

8. Memphis Depay (£25m)

Arriving with high hopes in 2015 from PSV Eindhoven, Dutch winger Memphis Depay was handed the No 7 shirt on his arrival in Manchester.

Yet Depay couldn't handle the heavy Premier League workload and struggled for form and fitness. Despite showing glimpses, the highlight of his one-and-a-half-year stay being a man-of-the match performance in the Europa League against FC Midtjylland, the midfielder was criticised for a lack of fitness and creativity on the pitch.

He was sold in January 2017 to Lyon, where he has rediscovered his form and is showing signs of the potential which made United spend £25m on him.

7. Bastian Schweinsteiger (£6.5m)

Germany World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger arrived for a fresh challenge in the summer of 2015, having previously worked with Louis van Gaal at Bayern Munich.

Despite being a regularly used squad member in his first season, Jose Mourinho's arrival saw Schweinsteiger unceremoniously dropped, and he was told to train with the Under-23s in pre-season.

Although the midfielder eventually returned to first-team action — his minutes came solely in domestic cups — he was released from his contract in March 2017 and joined MLS side Chicago Fire, where he still plays.

Given his legendary status at both club and international level before his move to England, Schweinsteiger's reputation took a hammering as his impact simply wasn't felt at Manchester United.

Bastian Schweinsteiger's stalwart status at Bayern Munich wasn't matched at Old Trafford

6. Kleberson (£6m)

Tenacious Brazilian midfielder Kleberson rose to prominence after playing a starring role in Brazil's triumph at the 2002 World Cup, where a standout performance in the quarter-final against England caught the eye of numerous European clubs.

In the end, it was United who paid £6m to Atletico Paranaense for his signature in 2003 (he put pen-to-paper on the same day as Cristiano Ronaldo), but his two-year stay at Old Trafford was blighted by an injury picked up in his second appearance for the club.

Brought in as a replacement for flop Juan Sebastian Veron (more on him later), Kleberson himself makes the list at No 6 after a total of two goals in just 30 appearances for the club, before his offloading to Besiktas in 2005.

Kleberson (L) signed with Cristiano Ronaldo, but their fortunes couldn't have been more stark

5. Bebe (£7.4m)

Sir Alex Ferguson famously admitted he hadn't seen Bebe play before signing him in the summer of 2010... maybe he should've done.

The unknown Portuguese winger moved as a 20-year-old from Vitoria de Guimaraes, but he made only seven appearances in his debut season before going out on loan for three consecutive years.

By the time of his permanent departure to Benfica in 2014, United fans were none the wiser as to the talents of Bebe. He is now playing consistently at Rayo Vallecano, who were relegated from La Liga last season.

Bebe was signed at Carlos Queiroz's recommendation but was sent out on loan after a season

4. Radamel Falcao (£6m loan fee)

There was a point when Radamel Falcao was one of the most sought after strikers in Europe, scoring at a regular rate with Atletico Madrid.

A move to Monaco curtailed his ascent before a loan move to Manchester United gave the Colombian the opportunity to reignite his career... but what happened next was quite the opposite.

Falcao failed to perform, was dropped to the Under 23s, and United unsurprisingly decided not to take up the option to sign him permanently at the end of the 2014-15 season.

The gamble didn't pay off, and even Jose Mourinho couldn't get the best out of the striker at Chelsea a year later.

Radamel Falcao scored just four goals in 29 appearances for Manchester United

3. Juan Sebastian Veron (£28.1m)

The clamour surrounding Juan Sebastian Veron's move from Lazio to United in 2001 had rarely been seen before – Veron's signature was the most expensive deal in English football at the time.

But despite an impressive start, Veron largely didn't live up to the hype, as he struggled with an Achilles injury in his second season.

The explosive midfielder admitted he found the relentless nature of Premier League football a shock to the system, and despite initial reluctance, Ferguson gave the green light for Veron to move to rivals Chelsea in the summer of 2003.

His one goal in seven appearances at Stamford Bridge though exemplifies Veron's status as one of English football's most expensive flops.

2. Angel di Maria (£59.7m)

Remember earlier when Memphis Depay failed to live up to the No 7 shirt billing at United? Well, Angel di Maria was the shirt holder before Depay, and his one-season stint at United was nothing short of disastrous.

After a man-of-the-match performance in the 2014 Champions League final for Real Madrid, the acquisition of Di Maria seemed like a great move for both club and player. It started well, with Di Maria's high point coming in September with a beautiful chipped finish over Kasper Schmeichel against Leicester.

But, after an injury ruled him out for seven games in December, Di Maria never recaptured his form and was unsettled in Manchester following an attempted burglary of his house.

He moved to PSG after failing to report for pre-season training in the summer of 2015.

1. Alexis Sanchez (swap deal with Henrikh Mkhitaryan)

With Alexis Sanchez's move to Inter Milan all done, the Chilean can be regarded as Manchester United's biggest ever flop.

After such an impressive three-and-a-half year period at Arsenal, and with neighbours Manchester City courting his signature, United fans could not believe their luck when they signed Sanchez in January 2018 as part of a swap deal for out of favour Henrikh Mhhitaryan.

Bizarrely though, Sanchez's form completely and utterly plummeted at Old Trafford. First under Jose Mourinho, and then under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The diminutive forward quickly fell down the pecking order with both managers preferring options such as Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial in attacking positions.

With a staggering £560k-a-week in wages being forked out for a player on the bench, and after missing pre-season due to his international duties at the Copa America, it was clearly best for all parties that Sanchez made the move to Italy, where he first burst onto the European scene for Udinese.

Oh, and Sanchez inherited the No 7 shirt... who will dare wear it next?

Alexis Sanchez's goal ratio is a shocking one goal every nine appearances for Man United

Diantara sekian pemain yang sudah disebutkan diatas, cuma Eric Djemba Djemba yang sudah pernah merasakan "ganasnya" kompetisi Liga Indonesia
