Manchester United agree £15.4m deal for Alex Telles and Porto defender will have his medical on Sunday night... as will free agent Edinson Cavani

* Man United have finally got over the line in negotiations for Alex Telles
* Porto have accepted a bid of £15.4million for the 27-year-old Brazilian defender
* Telles was spotted in the back of a car in Manchester on Sunday ahead of move
* Telles will have his medical on Sunday night ahead of his move to Old Trafford
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is also close to signing Edinson Cavani and Facuno Pellestri

Manchester United have finally agreed an £15.4million deal with Porto for full back Alex Telles with the 27-year-old due to have a medical later today.

Telles, who was spotted hiding in the back of a car in Manchester ahead of his imminent move, looks set to join the Red Devils as does free agent Edinson Cavani - also having his medical on Sunday night.

United are also looking to sign another Uruguayan, 18-year-old Penarol winger Facundo Pellestri, and he will have his medical check on Monday.

Alex Telles (right) tries to hide in the back of the car as he gets ready to seal Man United move. Full back Telles is on the brink of joining United in a £15.4million deal from Porto. His imminent arrival will come as a huge boost to United after their 6-1 defeat by Tottenham

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been desperate for a new left back to bolster his defensive options, and the United boss now looks to have got his man in Brazil international Telles, who they will pay £13.6m up front for plus £1.8m in add-ons.

With 13 goals and 12 assists in all competitions last season, Telles' attacking prowess makes him an attractive option for United and the defender also helped his side keep 20 clean sheets in the Primeira Liga in the 2019-20 campaign.

Solskjaer has been frustrated in his attempts to strengthen his squad for the new campaign with Donny van de Beek the only new arrival at Old Trafford.

But the Norwegian is finally set to see another player walk through the door, in addition to ex-PSG striker Edinson Cavani who has agreed a two-year deal with the club.

As Sportsmail revealed first, talks advanced quickly on Saturday and the Uruguay international will undergo a medical over the next 24 hours prior to signing a deal until 2022 on wages of around £210,000 a week after tax.

He is expected to be confirmed as a United player on Monday.

Telles helped Porto keep 20 clean sheets in the Primeira Liga during the 2019-20 campaign. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been desperate for new additions before the transfer window shuts

Meanwhile, Pellistri will finalise a £10million move from Penarol, who made his professional debut for Penarol in August 2019 at the age of 17 after impressing manager Diego Forlan and he scored his first goal three months later.

Forlan, who played for United between 2002 and 2004, recommended him to his former club and the Red Devils have fought off strong competition from Real Madrid, Juventus and Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Lyon and Boca Juniors.

There could still be more new signings before the window shuts on Monday. Talks will continue for Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho but the Bundesliga side are refusing to lower their £108m asking price.

TELLES SIGNS FOR UNITED

Manchester United is delighted to confirm the arrival of Alex Telles from FC Porto. The defender has signed a four-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year.

Telles, 27, is a full international with Brazil and an experienced player across Europe, having played in the UEFA Champions League for many years.

Over the past five seasons with FC Porto, he has scored 26 goals and registered more than 50 assists.

He has won league titles in Portugal, and also in Turkey where he played for Galatasaray.

Alex Telles said: “To join a club with the prestige of Manchester United is a huge honour. You have to work hard to get to this moment in your career and now I am coming to this club, I can promise that I will give everything in my heart to be a success here.

“I won many trophies at FC Porto and I want to continue that at United. The manager has a clear plan and direction for this team and I can’t wait to pull on the famous shirt.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “First and foremost, I welcome Alex to United. He is a player we have been tracking for some time and his performances over the past few years are exactly what we are looking for. He is a fighter and a winner and will add real determination and competition to the squad.

“Alex has the qualities, both as a player and as a person, that we want here at Manchester United.”

Default Re: Alex Telles

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ALEX TELLES

In Alex Telles, Manchester United have recruited a hugely experienced player who has already demonstrated his ability as a left-back in some of European football’s most competitive leagues.

The 27-year-old Brazilian is a true all-rounder; as comfortable flying down the wing as he is stifling opposition attacks. Telles has also shown his aptitude in front of goal, and his conversion statistics would be impressive for an offensive winger, let alone a defender.

Born in Caxias do Sul on 15 December 1992, Telles came through the youth system at Brazilian side Juventude, and made his debut in 2011, in the fourth tier of his native country. However, it was immediately obvious that the youngster had a big future ahead of him, and a move to Gremio – in Brazil’s top division – soon followed.

At the Porto Alegre-based club, Alex established himself as one of the world’s most promising full-backs and, having missed just two league games in the 2013 season, was selected in the Brasileiro Serie A Team of the Season.

The left-back seemed certain to tread a familiar path for young Brazil stars and make the move to Europe. That’s exactly what he did after just one season in the Brazilian top flight, and it was Galatasaray who secured Alex’s services during the January 2014 transfer window.

In the Turkish Super Lig, Telles continued to excel. In a year and a half with the Istanbul giants, he won the Turkish Cup twice and the title in 2014/15. The man from southern Brazil also had his first taste of European football and faced English sides Chelsea and Arsenal in successive seasons in the Champions League.

The following campaign saw Telles join Internazionale on a season-long loan, and gain his first experiences playing in one of Europe’s ‘top five’ leagues. His impressive showings in Italy alerted the attentions of Porto, who signed the full-back on a permanent deal in 2016.

In four years at the Portuguese club, Telles racked up nearly 200 appearances and helped Porto win league titles in 2017/18 and 2019/20.

The defender, who can also operate in midfield, has become accustomed to facing Europe’s top sides and came up against Liverpool, Juventus and RB Leipzig on Champions League duty during his time at Porto.

Telles’s development in recent years has been evident for regular followers of Portuguese football. The Brazilian was selected in the Primeira Liga Team of the Year in each of his last three seasons at Porto and was also voted as the club’s Player of the Season in 2017/18. But it was his final year with the Dragoes that he really caught the attention of Europe’s top clubs.

From left-back, Telles contributed an incredible 11 league goals and eight assists in just 31 appearances. Not that his contributions were limited to the offensive areas of the field, and Alex played a vital role in a defence that conceded just 22 league goals throughout the campaign.

An accomplished shooter from distance, with an excellent crossing range and an ability to rapidly bypass opposition defenders, Telles established himself as one of the most-sought-after full-backs in Europe before joining United in October 2020.

His excellent displays also earned him a maiden call-up to the senior Brazil squad in March 2019, and Alex won a first cap in a 1-1 draw with Panama.

Just weeks before signing for the Reds, Telles was once again selected by his country, for key World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru. He will become the eighth Brazilian player to represent United.

'Signed. Sealed. Delivered': Man United confirm signing of Alex Telles in £15.4m transfer from Porto as Brazil defender bolsters Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's defensive options in wake of Tottenham humiliation

* Defender Alex Telles underwent a medical on Sunday night ahead of his move
* Manchester United made a breakthrough with Porto to agree a £15.4m fee
* The Brazilian left back is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's second signing of the window

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Porto left-back Alex Telles in a £15.4million deal.

The 27-year-old had a medical at Carrington on Sunday night after United finally made a breakthrough in talks with their Portuguese counterparts as he agreed a four-year deal with the option of a further year.

Telles has become United's second signing of the summer following Donny van de Beek's £40m arrival from Ajax. Former Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani is expected to follow on deadline day by signing on a free transfer.

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Porto and Brazil left-back Alex Telles. The Brazil international has joined the Old Trafford club until June 2025 for a fee of £15.4m

Telles told the club's official website: 'To join a club with the prestige of Manchester United is a huge honour.

'You have to work hard to get to this moment in your career and now I am coming to this club, I can promise that I will give everything in my heart to be a success here.

'I won many trophies at FC Porto and I want to continue that at United. The manager has a clear plan and direction for this team and I can't wait to pull on the famous shirt.'

The 27-year-old becomes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's second signing of this transfer window. Solskjaer saw the urgency of adding defenders in wake of the 6-1 humiliation by Tottenham

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had been desperate for a new left back to bolster his defensive options even before the club's humiliating 6-1 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.

Now the United boss has got his man in Brazil international Telles, who they will pay £13.6m up front for plus £1.8m in add-ons.

With 13 goals and 12 assists in all competitions last season, Telles' attacking prowess makes him an attractive signing for United and the defender also helped his side keep 20 clean sheets in the Primeira Liga in the 2019-20 campaign.

Solskjaer added: 'First and foremost, I welcome Alex to United. He is a player we have been tracking for some time and his performances over the past few years are exactly what we are looking for. He is a fighter and a winner and will add real determination and competition to the squad.

'Alex has the qualities, both as a player and as a person, that we want here at Manchester United.'

EXCLUSIVE: TELLES SETS OUT HIS AIMS WITH UNITED

New Manchester United signing Alex Telles has spoken of his delight at joining the club, and says he feels he is in the best form of his career.

The 27-year-old Brazil international has penned a four-year contract, with an option to extend for a further year, and after arriving in Manchester, he sat down with MUTV's Mark Sullivan to discuss his aims and ambitions for life as a Red...

How excited are you to sign for Man United?

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I’m very happy to be here and I’m going to give everything to fight for the club and do the best possible. It’s a very unique opportunity and I’ll do the best I can.”

How would you describe yourself as a player?

“I like to think of myself as a very intelligent player, a set-piece specialist and I’m always looking for opportunities to create passes to score goals.”

How much are you looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Premier League?

“Playing in the Premier League has always been a dream for me. And, as I said before, I want to give my all to achieve the best results possible for Manchester United.”

You've played against a few English sides before (Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester and Liverpool). What were your experiences like in those games? Did that give you a flavour of what to expect from Premier League sides?

“I’m in the best moment of my life in terms of being a versatile player, and obviously coming to play in the Premier League and playing against the opponents I have done already, and playing in a league as strong as the Premier League. I hope to be able to bring my best to the club.”

You scored 13 goals last season in all competitions. That's remarkable for a defender - what's your secret and do you work on your shooting?

“I look at being a defender in a different way with my goals. I’m looking to create more openings wherever possible but during training I also pay particular attention to set-piece training. Apart from the key basics of being a defender, which is obviously about defending well, I want to have extra aspects to my game so I’m a versatile player.”

The modern full-back is expected to be capable of attacking and defending to an excellent standard - do you see that as an important part of your game, being able to thrive at both ends of pitch?

“Absolutely. I have great beliefs in my defensive capabilities but also in my attacking ability. I’m in the best moment of my career and I believe I’ve grown a lot, and hopefully I can continue to do so.”

You played with Diogo Dalot at Porto, so did you speak to him before signing for United? What advice did he give you?

“I spoke to Diogo and he sent me a message to wish me good luck. United is a big club and I want to help United grow as a football club.”

What will it be like when you meet up with all your new team-mates after the internationals?

“I believe I’m going to meet a marvellous group. I’ve spoken to Bruno Fernandes and he’s said how welcoming the boys are. I believe I will settle very well into the group.”

At the moment, you're preparing for two key games with Brazil. Are you looking forward to those matches?

“Yes, I’m very much looking forward to it, particularly now being a Manchester United player as well. I’ve got that mentality that I want to win games and I want to win trophies. It’s all about the big moments.”

Finally have you got a message for United fans all over the world?

“I’m coming here to give my all. It’s a big club and I’m here to help the team win games and I hope I can show my best to the fans.”
