Jaap Stam agrees deal to become Reading manager following dismissal of Brian McDermott from the Madejski Stadium

* Reading are set to confirm Jaap Stam as their new manager this week
* Dutchman succeeds Brian McDermott who was sacked by the Royals
* Former Manchester United defender has been working with Ajax

Jaap Stam is expected to be confirmed as the new manager of Reading this week after agreeing a two-year contract.

The former Manchester United defender will replace Brian McDermott, who was sacked by the Championship club last month.

The 43-year-old Stam, who took part in Soccer Aid at Old Trafford on Sunday, has been assistant coach with Jong Ajax - the Ajax reserve side who play in the Eerste Divisie.

Jaap Stam is set to be confirmed as the new manager of Reading on a two-year deal at the Championship side

Quote:
STAM'S CAREER HONOURS

Eredevisie: (1): 1996–97 (PSV)

Dutch Cup (2): 1995-96 (PSV), 2006–07 (Ajax)

Premier League (3): 1998–99, 1999–00, 2000–01

FA Cup (1): 1998–99

UEFA Champions League (1): 1998–99

Intercontinental Cup (1): 1999

Coppa Italia (1): 2003–04 (Lazio)
He will link up with another Dutchman at Reading in the shape of director of football Brian Tevreden.

Stam's deal at Reading will have an option for an additional year should all go well.

The Royals finished 17th in the Championship table last year, sparking the decision to part with McDermott for the second time.

Stam arrives in Berkshire as a familiar face in British football, following his successful period at Old Trafford.

The centre back was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from PSV Eindhoven in 1998 and spent three years with the Red Devils, winning the Champions League with a famous victory over Bayern Munich in Barcelona at the end of his first season with the club.

Stam went on to play for Lazio, AC Milan and Ajax before hanging up his boots 2007.

Wiih dari pelatih junior Ajax langsung naik jabatan ke pelatih utama Reading.
Mungkin Reading hanya sebagai batu loncatan sebelum kembali menangani Ajax senior nantinya

Stam revealed that he was attracted to Reading because of the ambition of the club's director of football, fellow Dutchman, Brian Tevreden.

'I wanted to be at a team that wanted to achieve something,' Stam told Reading's official YouTube channel.

'When I got the invitation to speak to the club, and the technical director Brian Tevreden, it was a very good conversation that we had.

'You always need to have ambition. As a player I wanted to achieve the most out of everything and win as many trophies as you can.

The Dutchman is aiming to guide Reading back to the Premier League within the next two years

'As a manager I've still got the same ambition and I want to do that with the team I'm managing. I'm very happy to do that with this club. Hopefully we can do well and get eventually where we want to go.'

Stam also revealed that he had spoken to Ronald Koeman and Guus Hiddink before accepting the role.

'It's important to talk to different people,' he said. 'I asked them what you need to know. You need to use the advice you get. We're going to talk to the squad after the press conference and see what we need to do.'

The Dutchman is set to be joined at the Madejski Stadium by assistant coaches Andries Ulderink and Said Bakkati, who worked with Stam whilst he was coaching with Ajax.

And the former Manchester United man says his main goal is to now guide the club back to the Premier League within his two-year contract.

'It's not going to be easy because everyone knows the Championship is a very strong league,' he said.

'There are some great teams playing in this league but I have the ambition to hopefully get to the Premier League with Reading.'

Reading chief executive Nigel Howe hailed the appointment of Stam in a statement released on the club's website on Monday.

'I am delighted to welcome Jaap to Reading. He was the first choice amongst a vast number of applicants interested in the position and we are thrilled that we have managed to secure the signature of a manager with such an abundance of experience,' said Howe.

'His record as both a player and coach, at the very highest level in England, Italy and Holland as well as internationally, speaks for itself and on behalf of everyone at Reading Football Club I would like to wish Jaap the very best in his career as a Royal.'

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam takes charge of the first day of pre-season training with his new club Reading

* Jaap Stam was replaced ex-manager Brian McDermott on June 13
* Stam became Reading's first non-British manager when he was appointed
* The 43-year-old has held non-playing roles with PEC Zwolle and Ajax

Jaap Stam has held his first day of pre-season training since taking charge of Reading.

The former Manchester United defender replaced Brian McDermott, who was sacked for a second time by Reading at the end of the season, on June 13.

Stam became Reading's first non-British manager when he agreed a two-year deal with the Madejski Stadium club.

Stam shares a joke with his coaches and Reading's club captain Paul McShane ahead of training

The Dutch manager, his coaches and Reading captain Paul McShane shared a laugh on Monday morning.

Stam has never held a managerial position in his career, but began his coaching career with a job as assistant coach for PEC Zwolle, where he stayed for two years.

He then joined Ajax, the club he finished his playing career with in 2007, to take on a role as assistant coach and defensive trainer.

Stam has a compatriot in charge at Reading, Brian Tevreden, and speaking shortly after his appointment he admitted the ambition of Tevreden was what inspired him to take the job.

'As a manager I've still got the same ambition and I want to do that with the team I'm managing.

'I'm very happy to do that with this club. Hopefully we can do well and get eventually where we want to go.'

Reading finished 17th in the Championship last season, having dismissed manager Steve Clarke in November 2015 before replacing him with McDermott.

The Royals have made one signing since Stam's arrival, adding Danzell Gravenberch on a free transfer from Dutch side FC Dordrecht.

Reading 1-0 Preston: John Swift scores debut goal as the Royals begin Jaap Stam era with a win

* Reading went ahead after John Swift's first competitive goal for the club
* Midfielder kept his composure to curl a right-foot strike into the top corner
* Jaap Stam victorious in first Championship match in charge of the Royals

He was keen to stress that it was only the beginning, but Jaap Stam's introduction to life in management could scarcely have gone more smoothly.

For all his wild gesticulations on the touchline, Stam's Reading side were rarely anything other than in complete control against a poor Preston.

Indeed, but for some wayward finishing, the margin could have been far wider than a single John Swift goal.

Jaap Stam took to the touchline for the first time in the Championship as Reading manager

The winner itself provided huge satisfaction for the former Manchester United defender in his first game in charge.

Garath McCleary's corner really was straight off the training ground, cut back towards the penalty spot where space had been vacated for Swift, who slammed it into the top corner.

'It's always nice, because we've got a couple of different ones like that,' Stam said. 'You always want them to succeed.

'When you play against teams like this, physically strong, tough to beat, if you can't create a chance in possession you need to find a different way to score.'

The treble-winning defender had said that he wanted his team to play attacking football, and much of this display was straight out of the Sir Alex Ferguson playbook – full-backs bursting forward, two wingers encouraged to take on their man and put a cross in, and some intricate build-up in midfield.

Stam will take encouragement from his managerial debut as Reading aim for the top flight

They were aided by a Preston side that had come to the Madejski Stadium merely to frustrate, and failed even to do that before a half-time tactical tweak.

By the time Swift scored his goal Reading could easily already have been two ahead, the former Chelsea youngster guilty of spurning a glorious chance from seven yards, and Deniss Rakels heading over when well-placed.

Time and again wingers Roy Beerens and McCleary terrorized the visiting wing-backs, while Swift interchanged well with the wingers, popping up on both flanks to provide chances.

One such opportunity for Rakels, early in the second half, failed to increase the Royals' advantage thanks only to a combination of good goalkeeping and the most inept finish imaginable.

But for all their trickery – and there were stepovers and backheels aplenty in the attacking third – Reading lacked end product at times.

'We had a lot of possession, dominated the game totally, created a lot of chances but couldn't finish it off,' said Stam, who admitted he had felt the nerves during the six minutes of stoppage time.

'It was very good to watch, and that's what we're aiming for. It's hard work, and we're not there yet.'

'It's only the first game of the season. We had a good start, but there's a lot of games to go, we've got to play a lot of good teams.'

It is certainly true that Reading will be unlikely to come up against many opponents this season as unambitious in attack as Preston.

They had their first shot on target eight minutes after the break, and that came only after Joey Van den Berg – another new signing – had gifted possession to Daniel Johnson in a dangerous area.

Johnson really should have converted, one on one, but was denied by a fine save by Ali Al-Habsi.

Had it found the net, and denied Stam three points, it would have been a cruel injustice.
