Pretty in pink: Premier League launch new ball… with special panels and grooves promising even more goals

* The Premier League has unveiled the new Nike Merlin ball for next season
* It features technology which they say will result in more goals in 2019-20
* The Nike Merlin ball has a striking colour scheme, which will start out as pink

There were a record-breaking 1,072 goals in the Premier League last season, but Nike are looking to increase that number for 2019-20 with a brand new ball.

The Nike Merlin will be used exclusively in the Premier League, and features four fuse-welded panels which they say provides a bigger 'sweet spot.'

It's the first bespoke ball of its kind and has been produced to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the partnership between the Premier League and Nike.

The Premier League will be using a new Nike Merlin ball for next season, with new technology. They say that the four fused panels and the air grooves will mean even more goals next season

It also marks a move away from the Ordem line of balls that the Premier League has been using since 2014.

The first version of the Merlin has a striking pink theme, but the modular design allows colours to be changed out, so we can expect to see different versions as the season progresses.

'The Premier League is often described as the most dynamic league in the world and we wanted to create a ball that reflects this,' said Kieran Ronan, GM, Global Equipment at Nike.

The various colours on the ball are designed to catch a player's eye, and help them identify the spin and speed of the ball.

The ball currently has a pink theme, but the colours are designed to be swapped in and out

They've also implemented 'Aerowtrack' grooves on the ball which will 'ensure a more consistent flight' through the air.

The ball will also have 'Urban Grip,' which they say gives enhanced traction on any surface and in any weather conditions.

'We wanted to design a ball that specifically illustrated the traits of Premier League football,' said Ronan.

'A ball that felt hyper-technical and precise in nature but also inspired by this English culture of living and breathing Premier League football.'

The Nike Merlin will be available from July 4.

TVRI Tayangkan Liga Inggris Musim Depan
Yanu Arifin - detikSport

Jakarta - Penikmat Premier League di Indonesia masih akan dimanjakan oleh aksi-aksi tim kesayangannya. Sebab TVRI akan menayangkan Premier League.

"Breaking News.

Premier League clubs urged to pay all their staff at least £9 an hour in new Living Wage campaign

* Only four current Premier League clubs pay their staff the real Living Wage
* West Ham, Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool are the four clubs who pay the rate
* The other 16 clubs have been urged to 'fix the injustice' and up their wages
* The Living Wage rate is £10.55 an hour in London and £9 elsewhere in the UK

Premier League clubs are being urged to 'fix the injustice' of not paying all of the staff who work at their grounds the real Living Wage.

Of the 20 clubs in next season's top flight, only Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool and West Ham are accredited payers of the hourly rate, which is £10.55 in London and £9 elsewhere.

Calculated by the Living Wage Foundation every year and based on what a family needs to get by, these voluntary rates are higher than the statutory national minimum wage and - for those aged over 25 - national living wage, which are £7.70 and £8.21, respectively.

More than 5,000 British companies have become accredited Living Wage Employers since 2001, including one third of the FTSE 100, which means they have committed to increasing their minimum hourly rate every year and ensuring their suppliers do so, too.

This last point is the main stumbling block for the sports industry, which typically involves large numbers of caterers, cleaners, security guards and other contracted staff working at clubs but being paid only the statutory rates.

Earlier this year, a report by social justice campaigners Citizens UK revealed that two in five jobs in the sports sector were paid below the real Living Wage, compared to one in five in the wider economy.

West Ham are one of just four Premier League clubs who currently pay staff the Living Wage. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is another Premier League chief paying the Living Wage

In 2016, Premier League clubs promised to go beyond the legal requirement and pay all permanent staff at least the real Living Wage but it was left up to each club to decide if they wanted to insist their suppliers did so and whether to apply for Living Wage Employer status.

With the average hourly wage for a Premier League player now approaching £1,500, Press Association Sport asked the 16 clubs that have not become accredited payers of the voluntary rate if they have plans to do so.

Newcastle declined to comment but the rest confirmed they are meeting the guidelines (newly promoted Aston Villa will be compliant from next month) in terms of their own staff and several said they are moving towards becoming accredited Living Wage Employers.

For example, a spokesperson for Brighton said they have 'recently begun inquiries into signing up to the Living Wage charter', while Manchester City, Watford and Wolves explained they are going in that direction.

A spokesperson for Premier League champions City said: 'In addition to all directly employed staff, over 95 per cent of our suppliers are also paid the Living Wage rate. The small number that do not yet pay the rate are working towards it and will be required to uplift when their contracts renew.'

Manchester United pay all of their staff the real Living Wage and it is understood they, too, are considering expanding this to all who work at Old Trafford.

Leicester have a similar stance and explained they have been working with all 'their suppliers and service providers' to make sure everyone working at the King Power Stadium is paid 'above the Living Wage Foundation's living wage... within a reasonable adjustment period'.

Crystal Palace said they are 'reviewing' their policy; Bournemouth, Burnley and Southampton confirmed they are meeting the league commitment to pay their staff at least £9 an hour; and Arsenal and Tottenham said they are paying their employees at least £10.55 an hour.

Norwich chief operating officer Ben Kensell said: 'We fully believe in rewarding our staff and are pleased to commit to pay the voluntary Living Wage for all permanent and fixed-term employees.

'To become an accredited Living Wage employer, the club will continue to review the feasibility of implementing the Living Wage across the whole business.'

While a spokesperson for Sheffield United, the other new Premier League club, said: 'We are fully committed to ensuring we continue our approach of supporting all colleagues to receive a salary which fairly represents their job role, their skills, knowledge and experience.

'With regards to the Living Wage Foundation, this is a new suggestion for the club as a new Premier League member and we are currently reviewing it during a very busy period.'

So, the direction of travel is positive, but the pace of change is still a cause of frustration for campaigners.

Matthew Bolton, executive director at Citizens UK, said: 'It's good to hear positive noises from some clubs but those not currently accredited must move faster to fix this injustice.

'It's wrong that at the same time as many clubs see huge commercial success and pay managers and players millions of pounds, there are thousands of workers at stadiums across the country who don't earn enough to live on.

'Football clubs have a responsibility to reduce poverty in the communities they call home.'

This sentiment was echoed by Jo Stevens, the Labour MP for Cardiff Central and a member of the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee.

'It's not right that so many people working in our Premier League stadiums are still struggling on poverty wages,' Stevens said.

'It would be a proud moment if football bosses stopped burying their heads in the sand, stepped up and started paying every worker a real Living Wage.'

Illegal streaming is causing Premier League clubs to lose around £1million worth of sponsorship EVERY game, new study claims

* Findings come from study based on eight Premier League matches last term
* Each match had an average illegal audience of 7.1 million viewers
* Big markets for digital piracy from China, Vietnam, Kenya, India and Nigeria

Illegal streaming is causing Premier League clubs to lose around £1million in sponsorship every game, according to a unique study.

The findings come following a commission from an unnamed Premier League side, with the study conducted by American sponsorship valuation firm GumGum Sports and London-based digital piracy experts MUSO.

Using the sample of eight matches from the top flight last term, it was found each game attracted an average illegal audience of 7.1 million viewers.

Among the highest of those viewers came from China at one million, but other countries including Vietnam, Kenya, India and Nigeria also featured.

The UK ranked 11th on the list for digital piracy views.

The figure of £1million, that is hitting Premier League clubs every game, comes from the legal and illegal audience and what it would mean for pitch-side advertising and kit sponsorship income.

In a statement, GumGum Sports vice president of partnerships and strategy Jeff Katz said: 'Clubs and sponsors have never been able to quantify media exposure from unauthorised streaming, which over the years amounts to billions of dollars in unrealised value.

Premier League clubs are losing around £1million each match due to illegal streaming. Along with BT Sport and Amazon, Sky Sports broadcast live Premier League games in the UK

'Now we have a unique data set that gives an advantage to brand sponsors while also enabling clubs to better demonstrate the value they're driving on behalf of corporate partners.'

MUSO co-founder and chief executive Andy Chatterley added: 'Piracy audiences have too long been disregarded as offering no real value to rights holders and distributors, but the reality is that these huge audiences still see the same shirt sponsors and commercials as people watching the game via a licensed channel.

'Sports rights owners are now waking up to the fact that they are leaving sponsorship money on the table by not measuring, understanding and gaining insight from the piracy audience.'

In the United Kingdom, Sky Sports, BT Sport and now Amazon hold the rights to show Premier League games live over the next three seasons.

With the combined value of their deals worth over £4.4bn, digital piracy is seen as a big threat to the sport that relies heavily on the income from their live TV deals.

Premier League rules to CHANGE this season with head-to-head records to be used for first time ever to separate teams level on points, goal difference and goals scored

* Premier League chiefs have announced a new rule for the upcoming season
* Teams finishing level on points and goal difference will now be separated by head-to-head records
* The team who has collected the most points will take highest finishing position

The Premier League has announced a major rule change next season that will see the head-to-head record between two teams come into play for the first time.

The head-to-head scenario will come into use to determine the finishing positions of teams who have the same number of points, same goal difference and same goals scored.

In previous seasons, teams involved in these specific battles would be pitted against each other in a playoff but the new law means that extra match is now less likely.

Manchester City and Liverpool were involved in a titanic tussle for the title last season

That is because for the first time ever two teams finishing level on points, goal difference and goals scored will be separated by who collected the most points in their head-to-head duels.

Whoever secured the most points in the head-to-head duels will take the highest finishing position, while the team with the fewest will take the lowest place.

If clubs still cannot be separated, the team who scored the most goals away from home in the head-to-head matches will get the highest position.

Only if the clubs remain level in the table after this will a play-off be arranged, at a neutral ground, with the format, timing and venue being determined by the Premier League Board.

Manchester United give academy players more minutes on the pitch than the rest of the Premier League

* United's youth system produced the most Premier League players in 2018/19
* It was the third season in succession the club have topped that ranking
* United also give their academy players more first team minutes than their rivals

Manchester United displaced Arsenal last season as the Premier League team relying most heavily on graduates of their own academy.

United's famed youth system produced the most players across the Premier League as a whole for the third year in succession, but the tally of minutes given to homegrown players has previously been the Gunners' domain.

For the 2018-19 season, however, United's academy did the double as almost a quarter of their playing time went to talent developed in Carrington.

Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Marcus Lingard featured heavily for United last season

Scott McTominay played 953 minutes under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Andreas Pereira was handed 660 minutes of action in his breakthrough season at Old Trafford

A study has once again tracked the playing time of every player in last season's Premier League along with the club or academy where they finished their youth career.

Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard continued to lead United's homegrown contingent, with the former pair increasing their playing time to 3,245 and 2,494 minutes respectively while Lingard dipped slightly to 1,765.

Scott McTominay played 953 minutes and fellow midfielder Andreas Pereira 660 as United gave 9,334 minutes of playing time to homegrown players - up from 6,858 the previous season and accounting for 23 per cent of the club's league season including stoppage time.

Their rise to top spot also stems in part from Arsenal's tally dropping from 7,933 minutes to 4,976. Injuries roughly halved Hector Bellerin's involvement while Jack Wilshere left the club, along with lesser contributors from 2017-18 in Francis Coquelin and Hoffenheim loanee Reiss Nelson.

That dropped them all the way to seventh in the homegrown standings, leaving north London rivals Tottenham to provide the main challenge to United as they did in the league-wide academy study. Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Harry Winks were regulars for Spurs, supplemented by just over 650 minutes shared between Kyle Walker-Peters, Oliver Skipp and Luke Amos.

Crystal Palace ranked third, though their hold on that position looks fragile with Aaron Wan-Bissaka sold to United and Wilfried Zaha also consistently linked with a move away - that would leave only midfielder Luke Dreher's four minutes from the season's tally.

Declan Rice's emergence lifted West Ham to fourth while Southampton and Leicester also surpassed Arsenal. Saints matched United for the most homegrown players used - nine.

In contrast to their local rivals, Manchester City trailed the entire league in the use of homegrown players.

Despite the significant investment in City's academy facilities adjacent to the Etihad Stadium, Phil Foden was the only in-house graduate to feature for Pep Guardiola's side on their way to the league title.

The talented midfielder played just 371 minutes in 13 league appearances, including only three starts - though his involvement in the Champions League and domestic cup competitions means hopes remain high for the 19-year-old, whom Pep Guardiola recently labelled "the most talented player I have ever seen".

City also won last season's Under-18 Premier League Cup and reached the FA Youth Cup final - and of course, fans will look at the Premier League table and be happier with their lot than that of United.

There were 66 players in last season's Premier League representing the club which developed them, an increase of four on 2017-18's figures.

Only five clubs had five or more as United and Southampton were joined by Spurs and Arsenal, with six apiece, and Huddersfield.

Town were relegated in ignominious fashion but Phillip Billing, now departed for Bournemouth, and Tommy Smith remained regular first-team contributors while youngsters Matty Daly, Aaron Rowe and Demeaco Duhaney featured late in the season as 9.4 per cent of playing time went to homegrown players.

City were one of half a dozen Premier League teams to use a solitary graduate of their own academy, though many featured far more than Foden.

Lewis Dunk, ever-present the previous season, played 3,376 minutes in 2018-19 to single-handedly put Brighton ninth in homegrown playing time, while Cardiff's Joe Ralls and Watford's Adrian Mariappa each played over 2,000 minutes.

Dwight McNeil is the only homegrown player to play for Burnley in the three years of the study but having only made his league debut in the last two minutes of the 2017-18 campaign, he established himself last term with 1,683 minutes, three goals and five assists.

Morgan Gibbs-White broke into Wolves' line-up with 766 minutes - like Foden, he will hope to build on that in the coming season.

The transfer window in numbers: Premier League clubs SMASH summer spending record with almost £1.44BILLION in deals... so how did YOUR team fare in the window?

* Transfer deadline days have invariably been dampest of squibs in recent years

Premier League clubs have smashed the summer transfer spending record with almost £1.44billion in deals.

Transfer deadline days have invariably been the dampest of squibs in recent years but it this turned out to be a zinger.

Following the transfer deadline on Thursday evening, the 20 Premier League clubs had spent £1.438bn gross on new players this summer.

Premier League clubs have smashed summer spending record with almost £1.44bn in deals

Arsenal led the way (£150m gross) with Chelsea the biggest net gainers so far (£80.6m) following David Luiz's switch across London to the Gunners.

The previous record spend by the English top-flight clubs combined in one window was the £1.425bn of summer 2017.

If you think this is all exciting, a word of caution. The Premier League is the only major league in Europe where the value of domestic TV rights has gone DOWN this season, so quite a few PL clubs will be seeing flat or even reduced income in 2019-20.

And yes, the overall TV income haul will be up because foreign rights have grown.

But that will principally benefit the biggest clubs under the new and increasingly iniquitous way the foreign TV revenue will be shared.

So do temper any whooping about the whopping deadline day deals with pause for thought that for some clubs, today's splurge might be tomorrow's crisis. We just don't know whose...
