Manchester United have reportedly revived their bid to sign Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao.

The Old Trafford club has this week increased their offer for Luke Shaw at Southampton and been rebuffed in an opening offer for Thomas Vermaelen of Arsenal.

Herrera was a target for David Moyes last summer and he had considered returning with a bid after following the 24-year-old's progress.

Sportsmail reported that United had the Spanish midfielder under consideration but would have to move quickly as his buyout clause is due to increase after June 30.

United were keen to see if Herrera would see out his contract and join next summer as a free agent, however, Spanish radio station Cadena Ser last night reported a bid had gone in and talks are expected to conclude a transfer over the coming days.

The deal would cost United £31million for a stylish midfielder who has also been courted by Manchester City and Barcelona.

Ander Herrera was given a tour of Manchester United's Carrington training ground along with his entourage on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old midfielder also had his photographs taken for the club website ahead of the official announcement of his £28.7million transfer from Athletic Bilbao.

The Spaniard stepped off a train at Stockport just after 1.30pm to be met by United security staff before being whisked away with his representatives and friends to Manchester.


Race against time: Herrera's buyout clause at Athletic Bilbao will increase on June 30

Herrera has become Louis van Gaal’s first signing as Manchester United manager.

United moved to pay the buy-out clause fee for the 24-year-old Athletic Bilbao midfielder on Tuesday, with the player signing a four-year contract. Former club Real Zaragoza are due £1million sell-on fee as part of the deal.

Herrera, an intelligent and stylish midfielder, was the subject of a £24m offer from David Moyes’s United last summer.

At that time they did not believe it was worth paying the best part of £5m more to make the deal happen.

United denied problems trying to sign Herrera last year — namely when three lawyers turned up at La Liga headquarters in an attempt to push through the transfer without knowledge of either club.

They know the buy-out figure is due to rise to £32m from July 1 and Ed Woodward, the club’s executive vice-chairman, did not want another saga to drag on this summer.

Herrera has been watched by United for more than three years, with Sir Alex Ferguson’s brother Martin among the first to bring him to the club’s attention.

Despite shelving the signing last August, Moyes had promised Herrera he would monitor his progress. A dip in form followed but he recovered to help propel Bilbao to fourth place in La Liga.

Herrera, part of Spain’s Olympic squad at London 2012, was also a team-mate of United’s Juan Mata and David de Gea with Spain Under 21s.

Van Gaal is already starting to put his mark on the squad, with Antonio Valencia and Patrice Evra both signing contract extensions.

Ander Herrera is set to be announced as a Manchester United player on Friday after passing a medical with the Premier League club, according to Spanish press.

Nika Cuenca of AS reports Herrera "will sign a contract until 2019," as translated by 101 Great Goals:

According to AS, Athletic Bilbao are shocked Herrera is leaving having finished fourth in La Liga last season, which begs the question why they did not lengthen the release clause.

Herrera will be presented as a Manchester United player on Friday having passed a medical on Monday in Madrid.

Marca also believes United will announce the £28.7 million signing before his release clause increases to £33.5 million on July 1, reported via Metro. Herrera is set to complete his move one year after David Moyes failed to bring him to the club, a situation commented on by popular freelance writer Graham Ruthven:

Herrera is an energetic, fully committed player who is more than willing to contribute in both halves of the pitch. He flaunts a keen eye for incisive passes, neat dribbling skills and the doggedness to harass opponents away from possession. When given freedom to roam, he is a creative player who can make a real difference with the ball at his feet.

The 24-year-old's price tag is certainly being frowned upon by large areas of support. This perhaps stems from Herrera's name not being renowned across the globe and his lack of appearances for the Spanish international side. Graham Hunter of ESPN FC believes United will have most likely secured a star:

United are buying a talented, professional, intelligent, articulate and aggressive midfielder who yearns to win trophies and to show his leadership. I think they have done well here. Details remain and, as we've seen before, deals can fall down even at the last minute.

But if all goes to plan, I expect United to get their man. He's probably the right man, too.

Fans will hope Herrera can make more of an impact than Marouane Fellaini, who failed to settle in after moving from Everton last season. Van Gaal is the right manager to get the best out of a squad that has struggled across the past year, and players like Herrera will help him rebuild a sense of solidarity in a currently lightweight midfield.

Sure, Herrera's name may underwhelm right now, but he has the talent and quality to fulfill a number of vital roles for the new boss. Herrera will be judged intensely when stepping onto the Old Trafford pitch, but he can easily shrug off doubters if he sticks to his natural game.
