Not for nothing were Manchester United revealed to be the most valuable club in the world game last week.

England’s biggest football club cannot be accused of missing many money-making tricks in recent years.

Every day at Old Trafford, however, United’s vast array of marketing and commercial staff sit at their desks behind the huge glass frontage and stare out at a constant, irritating reminder of an opportunity missed.

Gary Neville's Hotel Football has been attracting envious glances from Manchester United

An aerial view of the hotel shows just how close it is to Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium

‘Hotel Football’, you may recall, is the brainchild of former captain Gary Neville. Shoe-horned rather more gracefully than at first looked possible on to a tiny patch of land 200 yards from the Holy Trinity statue of George Best, Sir Bobby Charlton and Dennis Law, the 130-room residence is impossible to miss.

Boasting a bar, restaurant and four-star facilities including a football pitch on the roof, it has only been opened a matter of months and is already a fundamental part of the Old Trafford landscape.

Fans gather there before matches and afterwards for Q&A sessions with other part-owners such as Ryan Giggs.

Initially, United officials tried to block planning permission by suggesting the building would block views of Old Trafford.

Now, having failed with that, United chief executive Ed Woodward and managing director Richard Arnold are considering another, more straightforward approach. They are considering trying to buy the hotel.

A main bar at Hotel Football is the ideal location for fans to have a pre-match drink

The hotel's Cafe Football is where fans can dine while watching the game in a buzzy atmosphere

It is understood that one tentative approach was made by United to Neville and his business partners prior to the hotel opening. That got United nowhere and there has been nothing since. According to sources, however, the issue has not gone away.

‘The hotel irritates people at United,’ an Old Trafford source told Sportsmail. ‘Not only because they couldn’t stop it but because people here realise now that they really should have thought of it first.

‘It’s not as if you can forget about it, either, if you work at Old Trafford. Every time you look up from your desk, it’s there staring at you.’

Neville and Giggs, however, are showing themselves to be rather astute and unemotional businessmen.

They have plans in place to open a second hotel, this time in Manchester city centre.

On the field, United are set for a protracted summer battle with Real Madrid over the David de Gea transfer after it emerged the Spanish giants plan to open the bidding with an offer as low as £13million.

De Gea seems destined for the Bernabeu after telling team-mates and staff he is leaving the club and failing to respond to an offer of a £200,000-a-week new contract.

United have a valuation of £25m and above for De Gea and will expect Real to match it. Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen and Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris are being lined up as potential replacements.

David Beckham already had too many MLS franchise commitments to get involved with Salford City project, says Ryan Giggs

* Ryan Giggs and the Class of 92 have confirmed David Beckham turned down the chance to work with them at Salford City
* Former United players want to get part-time City to the Football League
* However, Beckham was already too heavily involved with MLS franchise

David Beckham turned down the chance of joining his Manchester United Class of 92 pals at Salford City to work on winning an MLS franchise in America.

Ryan Giggs confirmed that he and fellow United greats Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Gary Neville and Phil Neville approached Beckham last year to be part of their dream of taking the part-time club into the Football League, but had been knocked back.

'The conversation was had,' said Giggs. 'Becks was busy with trying to get an MLS franchise so the timing wasn't great which we understood. He was busy and still is busy. It was a shame.'

Beckham was heavily involved in an MLS franchise and turned down the Salford City opportunity

Giggs was speaking at the launch of A Class of 92: Out Of Their League, a fly-on-the-wall television documentary that will be screened on the BBC in September showing how Salford won promotion from the eighth tier of English football in their first full season under their famous owners.

In a particularly revealing scene, Scholes snubs an attempt by Gary Neville to coax him out of retirement to play for Salford in an FA Cup tie, by shouting down the phone 'I'm as fat as f***'.

Speaking afterwards, Scholes confirmed that at the age of 40 he would not be putting on his boots for Salford and is instead looking ahead to a career in coaching.

'I thought about it (playing again) for a minute if Gary said he was playing too. But if you look at me and Gary now, I think you'll see it's too late now.

'Coaching is something I would be interested in getting into. I coach my son's team on a Thursday and it's nice when you see the kids' eyes light up seeing you there.

'I did a session or two last season at Salford because we were asked by the manager but they don't need me to do that now and it's not the job of the owners to go down and do coaching unless you are asked. I've had the one offer in management at Oldham, maybe in the future it might be something.

The Class of 92 own 50 per cent of semi-professional Salford, who begin their campaign in the Evo Stik Northern Premier Division on Saturday against Marine with the other half owned by their Singaporean billionaire friend Peter Lim, who once tried to buy Liverpool.

Their involvement has created an unprecedented level of interest in Salford whose Moor Lane ground holds a capacity of only 1,400.

Gary Neville has set the club a target of moving to a 25,000-capacity stadium and playing in the Football League.

Giggs said: 'As usual, the idea of owning a football club was Gary. We wanted something where we could look 10 or 15 years ahead and that could only be owners. We didn't know which club and then it was in front of us, I grew up in Salford, Scholesy was born in Salford.

The documentary deals with the sacking of manager Phil Power and Giggs admitted: 'We felt we were underachieving, and as owners we would do something about it.

'When you dip below what you want to achieve, you expect questions to be asked.

'Our aspirations are to be in the football league and have a 25,000 seater stadium. We can't do that without someone like Peter Lim. We needed his investment, his expertise

According to the official website, the Hall of Fame 'aims to celebrate and highlight the achievements of the all-time top talents to grace the game in England'.

Giggs and Neville were joined by Norman Hunter, Stuart Pearce and Faye White among others in the class of 2015 to be inducted.

The Hall of Fame already comprises ex-England internationals such as Michael Owen and Ian Wright.

The Welsh winger and English defender enjoyed much success together with Manchester United and they celebrated a special night with each other on Wednesday.

Giggs won the Premier League an extraordinary 13 times while Neville was a domestic champion on eight occasions.

The pair also both won the Champions League with Manchester United twice - in both 1999 and 2008.

They have now gone their separate ways with Giggs currently serving as assistant manager to Louis van Gaal at Manchester United while Neville works as a pundit for Sky Sports.

‘Why the f*** did we buy a football club?’: Scholes, the Nevilles, Giggs and Butt reveal the highs and lows of the Salford City takeover in new BBC documentary

* BBC documentary sees Manchester United's class of '92 tackle non-league
* Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky But and Neville brothers own Salford City
* Former Reds visibly struggle with seventh tier life in teaser trailer (below)
* Documentary goes behind scenes and meets club's everyday staff

It is Manchester United's Class of '92 as you have never seen them before.

Phil Neville for example, is spotted behind a clubhouse bar asking thirsty punters if they fancy a drink.

His brother Gary, meanwhile, is in what appears to be a rusty shipping container which doubles up as a loo, asking if he should sign a new striker or buy a new toilet.

And at one point Paul Scholes, never one to shy away from delivering a frank assessment, asks bluntly: 'Why the f*** did we buy a football club?'

It is a question that will be answered when a BBC documentary on the five Old Trafford legends and their acquisition of non-league Salford City airs later this month.

The Nevilles, Scholes and former members of United's golden generation Nicky Butt and Ryan Giggs bought the seventh-tier outfit in 2014.

And the two-part series, Class of 92: Out of Their League, promises a warts-and-all look at what happened next.

Beeb bosses say the show captures the humour and drama off the pitch in the famous five's first season at the semi-professional club which was formerly run by volunteers.

The documentary meets everyone involved at the Ammies, from players, groundsman to Babs the tea lady.

But the most important characters are the ex-United stars who quickly get stuck in.

With the side struggling despite substantial investment, the show captures the conference call which led to the New Year's Day departure of management team Phil Power and Dave Chadwick

Phil Neville is seen holding a phone over which Scholes tells him grimly: 'I think we should probably let him go.'

Scholes is also seen close to the dugout, barking out instructions and generally doing his best Sir Alex Ferguson impression while the group are often shown on the humble terraces of Salford's historic Moor Lane home, arguing with referees and boisterously celebrating goals.

At one point, presumably after a defeat, Gary Neville jokes: 'I feel like going in and ripping their heads off.'

While it may only be down the road, it is certainly a long way from the Theatre of Dreams.

Salford FC rags to riches tale will have viewers glued to new documentary series following club owned by Class of '92 stars

* BBC has made a new documentary series following Salford FC
* The semi-professional club is co-owned by former Manchester United players Gary and Philip Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt
* The Class of 92: Out Of Their League TV series follows the team's fortunes

Talk about your value for money. Presumably to help make our TV license fee go just that little bit further, the BBC has made a new documentary series right on their own doorstep.

In fact, all they probably had to do was to turn the cameras around inside Media City and point them out of the windows at the little football ground over the road. Cashback!

Oh yes, it was definitely that. Or the fact that Salford City FC happens to be now owned by a wonderwall of former Manchester United greats.

The Class of 92: Out Of Their League TV series effectively picks up where the award-winning documentary of a similar name left off. Starting from the beginning of last season when Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt became co-owners. But as with the film of their rise through the ranks and on to international fame, I don’t think you have to be of the Old Trafford persuasion to enjoy it.

And also as with that film, the ultimate appeal of this two-parter will prove that we are not so much fascinated by the famous. But that we are all suckers for a rags-to-riches tale. Only there’s no glass slipper in this Cinderella story. Just lots of muddy boots, and the odd golden one.

The Class of 92: Out of the League follows Salford FC, which is co-owned by (L-R) Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes

Not that there aren’t issues with the programme along the way. First of all, there’s the rather cliched, and somewhat forced jeopardy that provides the narrative. From the very beginning, a voice over prepares us for a ‘dressing room that’s out of control’ and ‘chaos on the pitch’. A whole will-they-or-won’ t-they sense of melodrama that doesn’t seem to fit with what is going on.

And just in case we hadn’t noticed that we’re meant to be constantly on the edge of a cliffhanger, there’s some basic British Bake Off soundtrack to ensure we know where we are meant to be emotionally.

But at the final whistle, what this is about is football. And whether it’s a Super Sunday, or Sunday morning over the park, nothing is ever really new under the beautiful game’s sun.

Which means that ultimately, and luckily, none of that telly technique really matters. What does matter, however, is the people that we get to meet along the way. And that is everyone from Jim on the turnstiles, who gave up some seriously heavy drinking to make himself useful at the club. To Gary Neville’s wife Emma, who over breakfast with the family in their beautiful family home talks with him about his new football project and sighs to the camera: ‘I know what he’s like... another added thing.’

And of course, there’s the football people. The ones on and around the pitch. And the ones who used to make a pretty decent living out of the game up the road. But all of whom we can see something of ourselves in.

In the first episode (part two is next Thursday), for example, there’s top striker Gareth Seddon. A male model for the day job, he tells us he dropped four leagues to earn £400 a week because ‘I wanted to win things’. Not that his mum would really mind if he did or didn’t, it would seem. After all, anyone who has a picture of their son sellotaped inside the door of every kitchen cupboard has surely already decided he must be a winner?

Then there’s Jason Jarrett, a good old pro at the end of his career who we witness having a bit of a set to with his then manager, Phil Power. Of which you’d be entitled to think, well no big deal. Except we then see Jason at one of his regular therapy sessions, as well as sitting in the car and telling the camera he had once been ‘suicidal’ and ‘planning it, and stuff.’

With this kind of access and insight into the people we’ve been given access to watch going about their business, there really is no need to tweak the truth into soap opera.

Then of course, there’s the ‘Class’-mates themselves. And perhaps not surprisingly, it is the very ‘telly’ Gary Neville who take centre stage among them. Both as a character in the documentary and, it would seem, as a member of the ownership team.

Neville has proved himself in retirement to be a natural on camera and a fantastic communicator. Which here includes everything from his excitement over some new toilets at the ground to his silent, but palpable anger as he sits with his tea in a chaotic half time dressing room.

Earlier in the film he describes his involvement in Salford City as ‘stepping into the unknown.’ Which is fair enough from his perspective. Only we don’t really get to watch it in a way that sees the drama ‘unfold’. That is too well documented elsewhere to make it the beating heart of the series.

But what does get the blood pumping around the veins in this series are those names on the programme’s team sheet. Because as the popular old platitude goes, in the end, it’s all about the players.

Ryan Giggs Uses One Word to Describe Class of '92 Members, Calls Beckham 'Cocky'

Ryan Giggs gave a cheeky interview to Inside United in which he revealed what it was like to be a member of the famous "Class of '92."

Giggs, along with the Neville brothers (Gary and Phil), Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and David Beckham helped herald in an unprecedented spell of success at Old Trafford.

Giggs, now assistant manager at Old Trafford, was asked to describe each of his former team-mates in one word, and there were some interesting results.

He said (via Goal.com): "Gary Neville? I'm going for two words...always right! Phil Neville? Bubbly. Nicky Butt? Funny. Paul Scholes? Dry. David Beckham? Cocky!"

We wonder how Becks will feel about that one!

Giggs also expanded on what it was like to be part of the group.

Quote:
We're all completely different people and characters but we all had that same desire, not only to get into the first team but to stay there and to win things.

We remained good friends off the pitch and still to this day we still share the same jokes, the same sense of humour and are comfortable in each other’s company. I think it was about that desire and hunger to keep going.

A lot of the things that we learned, not only in football but in life as well, were as apprentices at Man United.
Awww—friends for life!

Gary and Phil Neville open up about taking Valencia jobs in 'Class of '92: Still Out Of Their League'

* Gary Neville became manager of Valencia in December 2015
* Neville was sacked by the Spanish club after four months in charge
* The former right-back picked up 14 points from 16 La Liga matches
* Phil Neville was assistant coach during his brother's spell as manager

In the first episode of the 'Class of 92: Still Out Of Their League', the Neville brothers revealed the moment they decided to take their respective jobs at Valencia.

Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt all have a stake in Salford City but different jobs have taken them to very different locations and for the Neville brothers, they went over to work in sunny Spain.

Gary Neville became Valencia manager in December 2015 but after only winning 14 points from 16 La Liga games, he was sacked.

Gary Neville spoke about the time Valencia rang him up regarding the head coach position

Phil Neville got a phone call about the job when he was on the driving range

The Class of 92: Still Out Of Their League gave fascinating insight into the workings of Salford City

But the former Manchester United right-back spoke about the moment he found out about the Valencia job.

Neville said: 'I was minding my own business doing what I've been doing for the last few years and I got a call saying can I go over and do the job for them until the end of the season.

He added: 'I like to plan everything and I think from my point of view, this is the first time where I've done something where it hasn't been planned but actually it feels right.'

Gary's brother and fellow member of the class of 1992, Phil, moved his family to Spain In July 2015 when he became assistant manager of Valencia before his brother took over at the club.

He said: 'I was on a driving range and Julie (his wife) was working in a shop in Manchester and it was a call from Nuno the manager of Valencia at the time and he said 'do you want to come and be my assistant' and I said yes and I forgot to ask Julie that by the way we are moving out to Spain and we're moving to Valencia and there wasn't much discussion really.'
