MOURINHO: WHY FRED HASN'T FEATURED

Jose Mourinho has explained why Manchester United fans haven't seen much of Fred in action recently.

Since his summer arrival from Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk, our no.17 has made 10 appearances in all competitions and he scored his first United goal in September's 1-1 draw with Wolves.

However, the Brazilian midfielder, who went to the World Cup in Russia over the summer, hasn’t featured in any of the last four Premier League matches.

During his press conference to preview Saturday’s match against Fulham at the Aon Training Complex, the boss was asked how he felt Fred has adapted to life at the club.

“Step by step,” Jose told reporters. “You also have other players at other clubs that needed their time and you have some of them that play even less than what Fred is playing.

“I think Fred [will play more], when the team is defensively stronger and doesn't need in midfield people that are more worried about giving some balance to the team than being involved in creation and attacking dynamics. The day we are stronger defensively, I think the horizons for Fred change completely.”

Fred, who played in our last home victory against Young Boys in the Champions League, will wait to see if he's required when we welcome Claudio Ranieri’s struggling Fulham side to the Theatre of Dreams on Saturday afternoon.

Manchester - Karier Fred bersama Manchester United sejauh ini tak berjalan mulus. Tapi, bukan berarti Fred bakal menyerah begitu saja.

Fred jadi salah satu pembelian MU di musim panas lalu dengan banderol termahal, 52 juta pound sterling. Untuk mendapatkan Fred, MU harus bersaing sengit dengan rival sekotanya Manchester City.

Kedatangan Fred diharapkan bisa lebih memperkaya lini tengah mereka dan menyempurnakan permainan Paul Pogba yang kebetulan masih angin-anginan. Kombinasi Fred, Pogba, dan Nemanja Matic dianggap jadi modal Setan Merah bersaing di papan atas.

Tapi setelah empat bulan kompetisi berjalan, Fred malah mejan seiring performa buruk MU. Dia baru tampil 12 kali dan membuat satu gol di seluruh kompetisi. Total menit mainnya hanya 719 menit atau rata-rata sejam per laga.

"Dia gusar karena jarang bermain, tapi saya bilang kepadanya untuk tetap berlatih keras setiap harinya, dia harus sabar karena klub tengah melewati masa-masa sulit," ujar agen Fred, Gilberto Silva, kepada Telegraph.

"Banyak hal terjadi kepada dalam enam bulan ini. Gaya hidup baru, bahasa berbeda, dan sejarah besar United yang membawa begitu banyak tekanan. Mungkin ini sedikit banyak berdampak kepadanya. Terlepas dari itu, dia melihat semua ini sebagai proses pembelajaran," sambungnya.

Jose Mourinho yang membawa Fred tak lagi jadi manajer setelah dipecat dan digantikan Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Fred pun harus bekerja lebih keras untuk bisa bersaing memperebutkan tempat di lini tengah. Meski begitu, tidak ada niat sedikitpun untuk Fred pergi.

"Tapi dia sama sekali tidak berpikir meninggalkan United. Dia masih punya kontrak lima tahun. Dia tidak akan pergi hanya karena performanya tidak oke di enam bulan pertama - atau bahkan setelah setahun. Tentu saja Anda khawatir jika tidak bermain penuh karena Anda ingin menunjukkan kualitas Anda."

"Meski kelihatannya dari luar, kondisinya tidak bagus karena dia jarang bermain, tapi dia tetap berlatih dengan baik setiap harinya," tutup Gilberto yang merupakan mantan pemain Arsenal itu.

SOLSKJAER HAS SENT A KEY MESSAGE TO FRED

Fred will get ample opportunity to show his true worth at Manchester United, caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has promised.

The summer signing from Shakhtar Donetsk has made 15 appearances so far and was last on the pitch in the Emirates FA Cup triumph over Reading.

Solskjaer feels he did not do any of the players drafted into that side any favours, considering the sweeping changes made to the XI, and he remains convinced Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera will face competition for their places.

Citing big-name arrivals who took time to settle during his days as a striker with the Reds, the Norwegian insists there is nothing for the South American to worry about as he will get plenty of game time before the season is out.

When asked at his press conference ahead of Tuesday’s visit of Burnley in the Premier League if it was a challenge trying to get Fred into his side, Ole replied: “I think the question is wrong because I don’t think it’s my challenge to incorporate players. It’s about the players being ready when they get a chance and Fred, he’s been working hard in training, he’s a good lad.

”It’s the same with Andreas [Pereira] and Scott [McTominay] because, when they get the chance, and they will, we want to see improvement. And we know there’s a very, very good player there with Fred, so hopefully he’ll adjust to the English game because there’s no doubting of his talent.

”It’s always difficult to come here. One, it’s Man United, you’re expected to perform straight away. Two, it’s an English league that he’s not used to, but he’s a Brazilian international. Andreas - a Brazilian international, the talent is there and, when they get the chance, the next time I’m sure [they’ll take it].

”And it’s easier to come into a team that is doing well. I didn’t do Andreas, or Scott or Fred any favours when I put them in against Reading in a game that had nine changes. Next time they come in, there might be one or two changes and then we’ll see what they’re capable of.

”There are loads of players that have come in and found the first few months difficult,” he added. “Two of the best players I played with who struggled the most were Diego Forlan and Juan Sebastian Veron, you know those two fantastic players, but when they settled, they performed. So I don’t think he needs to worry too much. He’ll get chances.”

Fred has been on the bench of late and could be involved when Burnley provide the opposition as United look to continue the push up the table. Although much has been said about the renewed challenge for a top-four place since Solskjaer took charge, the interim boss still has loftier ambitions.

”We’ve got the Champions League,” he said. “We’ve got the FA Cup. We can’t just say the top four and that’s it, we’ve got to look at can we win something this year. As I’ve said, I go into every single game as a Manchester United manager thinking we can win this game.”

The Reds are striving to make it nine wins out of nine under Solskjaer but the Clarets have taken a point from both of their last two visits to Old Trafford and have avoided defeat in four of nine Premier League fixtures against United.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted Fred can still be a success at Manchester United and likened his struggles to adapt to life in the Premier League to two of his former team-mates in Diego Forlan and Juan Sebastian Veron.

The Brazilian midfielder joined United for a hefty £52million fee from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer, but is yet to hit his stride and has remained on the peripheral for much of this season, featuring just 15 times in all competitions.

Solskjaer has used him sparingly since taking over the reins from Jose Mourinho back in December but has spotted real potential in Fred and is backing him to eventually come good.

The United boss has seen it before in gifted players who come to these shores and need time to adjust to their new surroundings and the high intensity of the Premier League.

He is in no doubt that it is the same situation with Fred, adding: 'There's loads of players that have come in and found the first few months difficult.

Forlan moved to United back in 2002 and came with a burgeoning reputation but failed to immediately show his worth, famously going nine months before scoring his first goal for the club.

The Uruguay striker went on to net 17 times in 98 appearances for United - notably including a brace in a 2-1 win over arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield which eared him cult hero status.

Veron joined United the previous year from Lazio for a then English transfer record of £24.3m and produced a number of decent performances during his brief time at Old Trafford.

Although he had his moments after settling in England, Veron was considered as somewhat of a disappointment with United fans feeling he had failed to live up to his price tag and he left for Chelsea after just two seasons.

The 25-year-old was then left on the bench despite injuries to Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard during the first half, with youth team graduate Andreas Pereira brought on instead.

Another was certain that this indicated the Brazil international had no long-term future at Old Trafford, believing he was only signed to trump near neighbours Manchester City.

There were also questions asked over why a half-fit Lingard was brought on ahead of Fred.

Fred has struggled for game time under Solskjaer and his predecessor Jose Mourinho, making only 15 appearances in all competitions this season.

Manchester - Fred belum juga dapat kesempatan main yang cukup dari Ole Gunnar Solskjaer di Manchester United. Tapi pemain asal Brasil itu tak perlu khawatir karena sang manajer tak melupakannya.

Dibeli mahal seharga 52 juta pound sterling (sekitar Rp 965 miliar) dari Shakhtar Donetsk, Fred terpinggirkan dari skuat Manchester United. Di musim pertamanya bermukim di Old Trafford, baru tujuh kali dia jadi starter.

SOLSKJAER: PSG WAS FRED'S BREAKTHROUGH FOR US

There were outstanding performances all over the pitch as Manchester United overturned a two-goal deficit against Paris Saint-Germain to reach the Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

But one Red which stood out in the heat of the important midfield battle was Fred, who arguably enjoyed his best game in a United shirt to date on a dramatic evening at the Parc des Princes.

The Brazilian, who made his 14th start of the season against PSG, has had to be patient for opportunities during his debut season at the club but stepped up when it mattered in the absence of the suspended Paul Pogba, injured Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic.

According to the statistics displayed in the new Match Centre in our Official App, Fred had a 69 per cent total influence on the game, with some effective passing in the engine room and vital defensive contributions.

On a night when the Reds were missing 10 first-team players in the French capital, our no.17 – who celebrated his 26th birthday the day before the PSG game – was also a calming influence alongside the equally impressive Andreas Pereira and Scott McTominay.

In his post-match press conference, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave credit to some of the unsung heroes who were vital to the cause – including McTominay – but singled out Fred, who he feels might have turned a corner against PSG.

“Fred and McTominay did a fantastic job screening in front of their high midfielders, putting pressure on [Marco] Verratti and Marquinhos,” Ole told reporters in Paris.

“Fred – that was probably his breakthrough for us. You can see why we’ve signed him. He’s got the mentality of a Brazilian international, he is a Brazilian international.

“He gets on the ball, has no fear and no doubt whatsoever. He used to play in that system at Shakhtar [Donetsk] so it suited him and that’s why we signed him.”

Solskjaer has repeatedly promised that Fred will receive ample opportunity to show his true worth and the South American, who so often shone on the European stage with his former club Shakhtar, certainly took his chance against PSG.
