It's historic with Liverpool

Paul Scholes believes there is a history to United’s rivalry with Liverpool ensuring that the match hasn’t lost its lustre, despite the fact that the Anfield club are far from being considered title contenders this season.

Liverpool come to Old Trafford on Sunday and, even with an ever-evolving hierarchy in the Barclays Premier League, this remains a highlight of the fixture calendar.

The challenge from Manchester City across town is undeniable as the two clubs fight for English football’s top honours. Liverpool, meanwhile, were involved in the title race in 2009 but more often in recent times United have battled Chelsea and, latterly, City for Premier League supremacy.

Speaking to Inside United magazine, on sale Wednesday 9 January, Scholes was asked where Liverpool currently feature among the Reds’ biggest rivalries. “I think it was the top one for quite some while,” he said.

“Liverpool probably haven’t done as well as they’d have liked over the last few years – and they’d probably admit that. But it’s definitely still right up there, it’ll always be right up there.”

Even considering City’s new-found prominence, it’s fair to say that the match with Liverpool carries a more storied past.

“Whether Manchester City have overtaken Liverpool now [as United’s biggest rivals], I don’t know… it’ll probably take years for City to create what Liverpool have done. But Liverpool historically are our biggest rivals, they’re always the biggest games and the best atmospheres. But I’m sure City will run them close.”

Sunday’s game represents the Reds’ first big test in the second half of the season and Scholes, who made his comeback from retirement a year ago today (8 January) against City, is delighted to be involved in such occasions.

“I just wanted to come back playing, and I’m glad I did," Scholes adds. "At the time there were a lot of injuries and I thought maybe I could help, so I tried to. The second half of last season I played quite often. Unfortunately we just fell short of winning the league; that was disappointing, but I’m glad I came back.”

Norman Whiteside with Ian Rush, used to relish clashes with Liverpool

09/01/2013 10:23, Report by Adam Marshall
Ex-Red: Liverpool tops the bill

Norman Whiteside has plenty of fond memories from matches between Manchester United and Liverpool and the former Red believes it's still the biggest game in the domestic calendar.

The former Northern Ireland international scored the Boxing Day winner in Sir Alex Ferguson's first-ever meeting with the Merseysiders and hit the net four times in total against the all-conquering 'Pool before joining Everton in 1989.

Despite the emergence of champions Manchester City as a force in recent years, the visit of Brendan Rodgers' side on Sunday is bound to stir the passions like no other game at Old Trafford this term.

"It's the first date you look for when the fixture list comes out," Whiteside told ManUtd.com. "Not just as players but supporters too.

"I still think it's the biggest game of the season. I know City are coming close to it but they still have a long way to go. If you're looking at United and Liverpool with 19 and 18 league titles, then City are a long way off that and well behind as far as history is concerned."

Whiteside believes it is difficult to predict the outcome on Sunday, even if United go into the big game in good heart after Robin van Persie's late strike avoided an early FA Cup exit at West Ham. Following the 2-1 triumph at Anfield last September, Sir Alex's side are on course to complete the double over the eighth-placed Merseysiders in the first Old Trafford fixture of 2013.

"It's always tough against Liverpool," Whiteside added. "I think all the form books go out of the window. "It's going to be about whoever is up for it on the day and I just hope we are.

"Van Persie has done brilliantly and United have just got this knack about scoring at the right time. Even I was doubting it would happen last weekend but, hopefully, we should be okay now for qualifying for the next round of the FA Cup."

Quote:
His record against them, with United, reads as follows:
(appearances (subs) / goals)

Division One: 11 (1) / 3
All competitions: 16 (1) / 4

Sir Alex's Liverpool record

Brendan Rodgers will be the eighth different boss to bring Liverpool to Old Trafford during Sir Alex's era.

Here we look at the United manager's record against his opposite numbers from Anfield, home and away:

Kenny Dalglish (I) - Sir Alex won 36%
The manager’s first Anfield adversary was fellow Scot Dalglish and the two displayed plenty of passion in the encounters between the famous foes. A 1-0 victory on Merseyside not long after the United boss replaced Ron Atkinson, courtesy of Norman Whiteside’s Boxing Day winner, set up an unbeaten run against Liverpool until September 1988, when the then champions came out on top at the fifth time of asking. A 4-0 defeat two years later, when Peter Beardsley bagged a hat-trick, was swiftly avenged by knocking Dalglish’s outfit out of the League Cup in a stirring affair at OT.

Graeme Souness - Sir Alex won 20%
The boss came up against another fellow countryman in the shape of Souness with three draws yielded from five clashes. The first-ever Premier League fixture between the rival clubs ended 2-2 but United's maiden visit to Anfield in the new era produced a 2-1 win thanks to Brian McClair’s winner. There was a thriller in 1994 when Liverpool came back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3, but United had the last laugh by doing the Double for the first time.

Roy Evans - Sir Alex won 60%
United enjoyed plenty of success against Evans’ Liverpool as the affable Merseysider struggled to outwit his rival in the opposite dug-out. The 1996 FA Cup final win instantly springs to mind, as Eric Cantona’s late volley clinched another Double, and the French striker also made his comeback from suspension in a 2-2 draw against Evans’ side. Consecutive 3-1 triumphs at Anfield in 1997 were particularly sweet with the first one going a long way to clinching another title thanks to two Gary Pallister headers.

Houllier / Evans - Sir Alex won 100%
The short-lived experiment of pairing Evans with French coach Houllier meant only one fixture between the two sides took place during their tenure as joint-managers. It ended in a 2-0 home win for United in September 1998, with Denis Irwin and Paul Scholes on the scoresheet.

Gerard Houllier - Sir Alex won 45%
United's 1999 FA Cup third-round comeback lives long in the memory and Sir Alex won more matches than he lost in his tactical battles with the French coach. Although Liverpool's League Cup final win in Cardiff was disappointing, a 4-0 belting at Old Trafford a month later at least set the record straight.

Phil Thompson - Sir Alex won 0%
It is worth noting that assistant manager Thompson enjoyed two wins out of two whilst taking over the reins for several months due to Houllier’s illness. A 3-1 victory at home preceded a 1-0 triumph at the Theatre of Dreams, with Danny Murphy scoring the only goal. It was the final game in a five-match winning run against Sir Alex’s team.

Rafael Benitez - Sir Alex won 62%
United returned to dominant form in meetings with Liverpool after Benitez’s appointment in 2004. It took nine league matches before the ex-Valencia coach overcame Sir Alex, although a Peter Crouch goal did prove decisive in a 2006 FA Cup tie. The games were usually tight, eight in a row failed to see both teams score, but United often held the upper hand with John O’Shea’s injury-time strike a highlight. Sir Alex's men did lose three on the trot but won the final clash with the current Chelsea interim coach, 2-1, with Ji-sung Park heading the winner.

Roy Hodgson - Sir Alex won 100%
The England manager’s short spell in charge on Merseyside meant there was only one game during his tenure. It ended in a memorable 3-2 victory with Dimitar Berbatov becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in the fixture for United since Stan Pearson in 1946.

Kenny Dalglish (II) - Sir Alex won 40%
The decision to replace Hodgson with club legend Dalglish reignited the rivalry between the pair. Plenty of water had passed under the bridge since their initial battles in the 80s but the fact the Liverpool man’s first game in charge was at OT in the 2011 FA Cup allowed the press to enjoy a field day. Ryan Giggs’ early penalty proved decisive but the boot was on the other foot a year later when Dirk Kuyt’s effort dumped United out of the competition. Wayne Rooney then scored both goals in a 2-1 triumph to ensure Dalglish didn't enjoy a superior head-to-head record second time around.

Rodgers - Sir Alex 100% so far
Brendan Rodgers’ introduction to one of the most famous rivalries in football was typically tempestuous. Although the two managers conducted an interview side-by-side beforehand and there were poignant scenes marking the memory of those who lost their lives at Hillsborough, the match itself was controversial. Jonjo Shelvey was sent off and gestured towards Sir Alex on the touchline but Liverpool still drew first blood through Steven Gerrard. Thankfully, Robin van Persie’s penalty won it after Rafael’s superb equaliser set up the chance of a first league double against the Merseysiders since 2007/2008.

Did you know? The rivalry between these two giants of English and European football originates from industrial matters stemming back to the building of the Manchester ship canal in the 1880s, which bypassed the port of Liverpool and led to job losses and discontent on Merseyside.

5 Reasons Fans Hate Manchester United on Derby Day

One of the biggest clashes of the Premier League season comes up on Sunday as Liverpool travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

Always an exciting date in the calenders of both sets of supporters because of the rivalry of the teams, the United supporters have been left better off at the end of the season more often than not over the past two decades, though on the day of the game itself the Reds and the Red Devils are close to inseparable.

The last five fixtures in all competitions between the two have resulted in two wins apiece and one draw, while over the entirety of time United have picked up 62 league victories to Liverpool's 53.

Both players and coaching staff have a huge amount of rivalry before and during the game—but the fans perhaps even more so. They are the ones who go to school, to work or even just go home to find familiar faces filled with glee while their own is downcast and miserable following an undeserved late defeat.

For the Reds, here are five reasons why the fans cannot bear to put up with United on derby day.

Late, Late, Late, Late, Late Winning Goals

It's bad enough having to lose to one of your biggest rivals, but the manner of defeat can sometimes multiply the pain by a factor of 10. Or 100.

Seeing your club dominate the match, as indeed the Reds did in this season's fixture at Anfield, perhaps even take the lead and look good value for the three points, only to see United come back (yet again) and take all three points themselves (yet again) is galling in the extreme.

As they did in this season's fixture at Anfield, of course.

But there's something even worse: the chaffing, frustrating nature of the late goal.

In a game where you could have, should have been out of sight already as the clock ticks past 90:00, one of two things you are desperately hoping for as a supporter is a late winning goal for Liverpool.

The other, is that United don't go up the other end of the pitch for the first time in about 20 minutes and nick one of their own.

John O'Shea did it at Anfield, Eric Cantona did it at Wembley. At Anfield in September, Robin van Persie did it with only eight minutes left.

They're not the only times, and you suspect they won't be the last.

Berating and Baiting the Reds' Players

Not all Liverpool fans love all Liverpool players, but that doesn't matter when Manchester United come to town.

You protect your own.

Some Reds players have been particular targets for the United supporters down the years, the likes of Steven Gerrard for example and Robbie Fowler. Now, Luis Suarez gets the brunt of the abuse from the stands—not that he seems particularly bothered about it.

Liverpool fans are hardly the angelic faces of innocence themselves of course; Gary Neville in particular can testify to that. But there's still something about supporters of other clubs—especially United—having a go at players they couldn't possibly understand and love the way Reds do which brings up the taste of bile in the back of the throat.

Of course the best antidote the fans have should be to outsing the hostile home crowd—easily done—but a goal or two from the Uruguayan wouldn't hurt either, of course.

Title Reminders

For a long, long time, Liverpool's 18 league titles was the source of pride for the Kopites and one of frustration and envy for the red half of Manchester.

No longer.

Since 1990 Liverpool have been waiting for another league championship to arrive; in that time United have clawed back, caught up and then finally overtaken the Reds in winning their 19th top flight title.

Manchester United are now the all-time leaders in championships won in England, something they have no intentions of letting Reds forget in a hurry after two decades of being told "come back when you've won 18."

Liverpool have come close, mightily close, on a couple of occasions...but have yet to have been able to take that final step.

Thank goodness for five European Cups

Refereeing Decisions

The venue doesn't matter, what's gone on before doesn't matter and the scoreline doesn't matter.

Those big refereeing decisions just somehow always seem to fall on the side of Manchester United rather than Liverpool.

Johnny Evans and Jonjo Shelvey both go flying in for the same ball? Red card for Shelvey.

United wingers flying around in the area? Penalty, for sure. Blatant foul on Suarez up the other end? Play on, lads.

Even outside of the fixture in hand, Liverpool have had penalty calls turned down, perfectly good goals disallowed and poor calls in general go against them.

United on the other hand, from the point of view of the stands, sometimes seem to get all the luck, none more so than when star striker Robin van Persie escaped a near-death experience earlier this season.

Liverpool are perceived to have had more refereeing injustices done upon them this season than any other club, and it somehow always seems to happen more often against Manchester United.

The Chants Which Have No Place in Football or Society

Let's be clear from the off, this goes for both sets of fans.

After a year where the breakthrough finally came in the search for truth and justice after Hillsborough, it should be hoped for that United fans accept and respect that the songs and lies they have peddled for too many years are hurtful falsehoods which are now more than two decades old.

Plenty do, of course, remain quiet about the tragedy. Others will say they only bring it up only as a defence mechanism. But there are still a number who choose this as their first port of call to bait the opposition and think they are clever, or funny, or big.

The same goes for Heysel.

In the opposite stand, Reds supporters need to reject the urge to respond—or to incite—with actions or voices about Munich.

The feeling between the two clubs and the two cities is never going to be one of mutual appreciation, but it also doesn't need to sink to these depths. There's always enough going on on-the-pitch to remain focused on and the rifts will only get wider with each bitter verse aimed back across the stands.

United vs. Liverpool remains the biggest spectacle the Premier League can show to the world, and while that rivalry will never go away it should remain firmly about the sporting and economic success of the clubs and their homes, rather than being tarnished and sullied by anything else.

Century of bitter rivalries between Manchester United and Liverpool

January 11, 2013

The fierce rivalry surrounding Sunday’s United versus Liverpool clash was rooted in the Victorian era.

Liverpool’s docks was the only route for Manchester’s burgeoning cotton industry to import their raw materials overseas.

The Port of Liverpool set high charges for the privilege of using their gateway to the mills in Manchester.

It sparked a rivalry between the two cities and provoked Manchester to build the Ship Canal. The waterway was to increase the animosity.

So it was ironic that sandwiched between the first vessels sailing down from Manchester to the Irish Sea and the official opening of the Manchester Ship canal was the first fixture between Liverpool and United, then in their initial guise of Newton Heath.

And the 119-year history of the fixture couldn’t have begun in a more demanding way.The first game at Ewood Park, Blackburn, was a Test Match Special on April 28, 1894, that attracted 6,000 fans.

The Test Matches were the equivalent of an end-of- season play-off between the top three sides in the Second Division and bottom trio in the First. United had finished bottom in Division One and, in their inaugural season in the Football League’s Second Division, Liverpool were champions.

The finishing places paired the two and the Merseyside outfit came out on top 2-0 at Blackburn to relegate the Reds.

It has been more than a century of high-drama clashes ever since and in a new book, Bright Red, every single match between the two clubs has been chronicled.

From that critical Test Match opening to the handshake that never was last February – when Luis Suarez snubbed Patrice Evra at Old Trafford – all the drama and highs and lows of this classic fixture is told.

The Man Who Started The Manchester vs Liverpool Rivalry

“Liverpool were always the ones and nothing will change,” said Ferguson at this weekend’s press conference. “It’s nothing to do with our position in the league. It’s about the history, geography. What’s his name, who built the ship canal? Mason? No it wasnae Mason… It’s coming… It begins with an A. Adamson. Correct? Daniel Adamson was the engineer behind the construction of the canal. He took all the industry away from Liverpool to Manchester. From that day on, the rivalry between the cities was there. Therefore, it’s not just football; geographically, there is fantastic competition. Of course, being the two most successful clubs, that has intensified over the years and that won’t change. If we two were bottom of the league or in the second division it would be the same.”

Daniel Adamson left school at the age of thirteen and became an apprentice to Timothy Hackworth, engineer to the Stockton and Darlington Railway, with whom he went on to serve as a draughtsman and engineer. By 1850, he had risen to become general manager of the Stockton and Darlington engine works and moved to become manager of Heaton Foundry in Stockport. He specialised in engine and boiler making, initially following designs created by Hackworth, making and exporting the renowned “Manchester Boilers”.

Liverpool were one of the world’s leading ports at the time, whilst Manchester was booming in the cotton trade thanks to mills. Raw cotton imported to England was spun in the mills of Manchester and it was said that Manchester clothed a quarter of the world. However, the material all had to come from over 30 miles away through Liverpool, and the Port of Liverpool set high charges on the importation of the raw materials destined for our cotton mills. Manchester decided that something had to be done, and that’s when the idea of the Manchester Ship Canal first came about, with the aim of by-passing Liverpool to import to the raw cotton.

Adamson lived in Didsbury and in 1882 arranged a meeting at his home to discuss the Manchester Ship Canal project, attended by the mayors of Manchester and surrounding towns, leaders of commerce and industry, bankers and financiers. Adamson was elected chairman of the provisional committee promoting the Ship Canal, and was at the forefront in pushing the scheme through Parliament in the face of intense opposition from railway companies and port interests in Liverpool.

The ship canal was given the go ahead and construction began in 1887. Adamson died at home in 1890 and is buried at Southern Cemetery in Manchester. The ship canal wasn’t in operation until 1894 though so, sadly, he never saw the Ship Canal in use.
