Erik ten Hag can make tough decisions at Manchester United because of his 'ruthless Dutch mentality', claims Craig Burley... as co-pundit Shaka Hislop admits the boss has 'proven him wrong'

* Manchester United beat Arsenal 3-1 in a Premier League showdown on Sunday
* The win was manager Erik ten Hag's fourth successive victory in the top-flight
* Since taking charge, he has made choices including benching Cristiano Ronaldo
* The Dutch manager has now been praised for making the crunch decisions

Erik ten Hag's Dutch mentality has allowed him to make the big decisions needed to turn Manchester United around claimed Craig Burley.

The Red Devils boss recorded his fourth consecutive win in the Premier League since taking charge at Old Trafford with a 3-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday.

Since taking the reins at the Premier League club, the Dutchman has made some crunch decisions, including the move to bench star forward Cristiano Ronaldo and club captain Harry Maguire.

Burley claimed that Ten Hag's ruthless mentality allowed him to make those key choices as he insisted the manager's ability to make decisions was never in doubt.

Speaking on ESPN after the game, Burley said: 'Shaka said he wasn't sure Ten Hag had the stomach to make the big decisions. I was sure.

'Because the Dutch people that I've worked with, this is their mentality. Maybe not every single one but the bulk of them. The coaches and players I worked with at Celtic and Chelsea are so single-minded, they're great teammates, but when they make a decision it's them, it's about them.

'Gullit had no problem doing it whether it was good or bad or it affected me. Jansen was the same. If it wasn't working, he cut you.

The Man United boss recorded his fourth win in five games with his side's win over Arsenal. Since taking charge, Ten Hag has made the decision to bench Cristiano Ronaldo. Burley claimed that Ten Hag's ruthless mentality allowed him to make those key choices. Burley's co-pundit Shaka Hislop admitted Ten Hag has 'proven me wrong on so many levels'

'For me that is one of the big success stories in Dutch football is when it's not working for them generally their managers are very ruthless, they will make decisions. And he [Ten Hag] has already shown it, but I don't think it was ever in doubt that he was going to make decisions.'

However, Burley's co-pundit Shaka Hislop did not have the same confidence in Ten Hag.

He previously claimed that he did not believe the Red Devils boss had what it takes to turn United's fortunes around but he admitted that he had been proven wrong by Ten Hag's start to life at Old Trafford.

'Credit to Erik ten Hag,' Hislop said. 'After the Brentford game I said I'm not sure Erik ten Hag has what it takes to turn this Manchester United team around. I'm not sure he has the presence to make some of the big decisions that Manchester United need, that's what I said.

'He's proven me wrong on so many levels. He's left Harry Maguire out, that was an easier decision. Left Ronaldo out. You thought the only was to get Ronaldo out of that team is to sell him but he's still there and Ten Hag has stuck by his decision.

'I thought the football we have seen Manchester United play in this game and against Liverpool showed the best Manchester United can be.

'And credit to him, for getting the best out if Rashford, the best out of Dalot, for his defensive partnership, for leaving out Maguire.'

Antony's opener handed United a 1-0 lead at half-time, before Bukayo Saka leveled the scoreboard for Arsenal on the hour mark.

But Rashford scored twice in 10 minutes to shock the Gunners and hand Ten Hag his fourth successive Premier League win.

Default Re: Manchester United under Erik ten Hag

Manchester United players 'take part in wrong-footed training sessions' after Erik ten Hag 'noted a shortage of left-footed players in his side' - with Luke Shaw 'among those involved' to try and strengthen his right foot

* Manchester United players including Luke Shaw have had 'wrong foot' sessions
* Erik ten Hag had concerns about the squad, so added work after main training
* The new Dutch manager has made additional changes around Old Trafford

Erik ten Hag has reportedly asked members of his Manchester United squad - including Luke Shaw - to do training sessions focusing on their 'wrong foot'.

Shaw has participated in the sessions to strengthen his right foot, with the new Dutch manager thought to be concerned about improving certain players.

Upon his arrival at Carrington, ten Hag noted a shortage of left-footed players, and countered this by signing Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Antony.

But the Manchester Evening News also report that the 52-year-old has set up specific drills after main sessions to strengthen the weaker foot of existing United players.

Shaw has been absent from United's matches since their defeat to Brentford on August 13 as he has struggled with a foot injury.

Training sessions have got more intense with new arrivals including Antony and Casemiro. It has also increased competition for places, with Scott McTominay stepping up to keep £70m signing Casemiro out of the side.

Sources believe United's senior hierarchy have backed ten Hag's ideas at Old Trafford, with his disciplined management style balanced by his personable nature.

Luke Shaw has been named as one of the players encouraged to improve their weaker foot. Erik ten Hag has made a number of change around Old Trafford since his arrival this summer

The dugouts at the club's home stadium have been switched so he could be nearer the substitutes as they warmed up, while they no longer stay at The Lowry Hotel pre-match.

Unused players also remain in the Old Trafford directors' box throughout home games, after nine members of the team were mocked for leaving a friendly early in July.

Ten Hag's decisive nature has won over some players who felt misled by previous permanent manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He requires professionalism and effort from his clan - and is clear with his players about his team set-up.

After his first pre-season with the group, ten Hag is eager to get them off on the right foot - even if it means a little extra work on their weaker foot.

'United should be playing in the Champions League': Erik ten Hag and David de Gea bemoan Europa League fixture with Sheriff but insist there is still pressure on the Red Devils to get a result after opponents upset Real Madrid last year

* Manchester United are set to face Sheriff in the Europa League on Thursday
* Ten Hag and De Gea believes United should be playing in the Champions League
* However, Ten Hag has said there is still pressure on their game against Sheriff
* Sheriff caused an upset a year ago after beating Real Madrid 2-1 at the Bernabeu

It's a scene to make Manchester United long for those Champions League nights.

Ugly grey blocks of flats tower over the tiny Zimbru Stadium in Chisinau, the Moldovan capital chosen to host Thursday evening's Europa League Group E tie because FC Sheriff's home ground in the unrecognised state of Transnistria was deemed too dangerous by UEFA due to the war in neighbouring Ukraine.

The venue where a sell-out crowd of 8,800 fans will watch the game may have been built in 2006, but there is an unmistakeable air of old school Soviet Bloc.

Even though United have toured some far-flung outposts of Europe in recent years, the club's first ever trip to Moldova will take some beating.

No wonder goalkeeper David de Gea had the Champions League on his mind when he and manager Erik ten Hag attended a press conference in front of a handful of reporters in a stuffy old gymnasium here on Wednesday night.

'Of course, in my opinion we should be playing Champions League, but this is a competition we have to play for - we will go with everything,' said the United goalkeeper.

Erik ten Hag's Man United side are set to face Sheriff in the Europa League on Thursday. Goalkeeper David de Gea (above) had the Champions League on his mind when he and manager Ten Hag attended a press conference in front of a handful of reporters. Victory is all the more important for United after losing their group opener to Real Sociedad at Old Trafford which has put Ten Hag's side under early pressure

When Ten Hag was asked by a local journalist if United will sign some autographs after the game, he didn't sound like a man who was looking to hang around very long.

'We will think about it but also after the game we have to go straight to the airport and return to Manchester,' said the United boss. 'The players have international duties and we have to prepare for that.'

Ten Hag will be hoping to go home with a win to make the trip worthwhile, but that won't be easy against a club that stunned Real Madrid 2-1 at the Bernabeu in the Champions League a year ago and won 3-0 away to Omonia Nicosia in this competition last week.

Victory is all the more important for United after losing their group opener to Real Sociedad at Old Trafford which has put Ten Hag's side under early pressure.

There is still margin for error but that didn't stop the Dutchman from painting this as a must-win game.

'Pressure is for every game,' he added. 'It's clear that when you lose the first game you have to win the second. We know what our task is.

'They beat Real Madrid last year, they're capable of doing that. We have to be ready and prepared for that game. It's a serious and decent opponent, and we have to play our best to get the win.'

United landed here on Wednesday without Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Donny van de Beek and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

All four players are understood to be injured with United sources dismissing speculation in Holland that Van de Beek has been dropped.

'If you don't fight, you are going to have a problem': Erik ten Hag blasts Man United's 'UNACCEPTABLE' performance in 6-3 thrashing at Man City as he plans to hold crunch talks with players about lack of 'belief' during derby defeat

* Erik ten Hag watched his side fall to a chastening 6-3 defeat at hands of rivals
* Hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden capped a brilliant day for Man City
* Dutchman said defeat was different to that at Brentford where they 'didn't run'

Erik ten Hag has blasted his Manchester United team for showing a lack of belief in their defeat at Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.

Hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden ensured City went within a point of leaders Arsenal with a captivating 6-3 win that at times appeared as though they were playing a different game to their great rivals.

Speaking to Sky Sports and BBC Sport after the game, Ten Hag rejected suggestions that the defeat was similar to that of Brentford all the way back in August but said that his players lacked the required 'belief' to take the game to City.

He said: 'If you don't fight - which we didn't - you are going to have a problem against Manchester City. This is different to Brentford, that day we didn't run. Today we wanted to run but there was a lack of belief.'

'I don't think you can compare to Brentford,' he added. 'This is definitely like against Brentford, [in being] mental, but different. Today we wanted to run, but we didn't follow the principles and rules but once again, it was a lack of belief.

Erik ten Hag blasted his team's performance as they were comprehensively beaten on Sunday. Ten Hag watched on as Manchester City ran riot to beat his team 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium

The Dutchman, who was criticised for his seemingly overly bold set up away at the champions, warned his players that he would show them on Monday that they could have been more 'on the front foot' on Sunday afternoon.

'I will show the team tomorrow we could have been on the front foot. In the first goal, we won the ball and could have created a chance and gave it away. That is unacceptable,' he said.

The first goal, scored by Phil Foden, came inside the first 10 minutes when City looked in ominous form and had had various chances to capitalise on their early pressure.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag also said that he would have to enquire with his players as to why they didn't bring what he has seen as a 'different team and spirit' in recent weeks.

'I am surprised why we didn't bring it on the pitch, I have seen a different team, spirit and we did not look convinced,' he said. 'I have to talk to my players and find out why.'

Haaland and Foden became the first City players in the Premier League era to score hat-tricks in the same game on a chastening afternoon for Ten Hag in which is revolution appeared to take a backwards step.

The scoreline also ensured that it was the highest scoring Manchester derby of all time.

Manchester City staff 'heard furious half-time inquest from Man United dressing room with Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez RAGING at their team-mates that they lacked belief' during crushing 6-3 defeat

* Manchester United suffered a crushing 6-3 defeat to Man City at the weekend
* Pep Guardiola's side ran away with a 4-0 lead going into the break on Sunday
* City's staff heard a furious half-time inquest from United's dressing room
* Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez were reportedly raging at team-mates
* Erik ten Hag 'agreed' with his players' scathing criticism and won't mind the rant

Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez reportedly led a furious inquest at half-time of Manchester United's humbling derby defeat at the Etihad and even accused their team-mates of lacking belief.

Erik ten Hag's side were blown away inside the opening 45 minutes and were 4-0 down at the break thanks to braces from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

United, who had won their four prior Premier League matches, could barely lay a glove on Pep Guardiola's side during the first half and Fernandes and Martinez made it clear how they felt during the interval.

According to The Sun, the pair were shouting so loud at their team-mates that the furious tirade was heard in the tunnel by members of City's backroom staff.

Erik ten Hag stood by and watched as his players took matters into their own hands in the dressing room. He reportedly agreed with Fernandes and Martinez and let them criticise his squad.

It looked as though United's half-time team talk had worked when Antony got one back with a superb strike from distance.

But any hope of a comeback was quickly extinguished when Haaland and Foden made it 6-1 with both men securing their hat-tricks.

United did get two more goals from substitute Anthony Martial, but only after it appeared that City had taken their foot off the gas by making four changes after the 75th minute.

It's said that the United dressing room was much quieter when the players returned at the full-time whistle.

Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez led a furious inquest at half-time against Man City. Manchester City's staff could reportedly hear Fernandes and Martinez raging at half-time. Fernandes hit out at his team after the game saying their attitude and belief 'was not the best'. Erik ten Hag 'agreed' with his players' scathing criticism of their team-mates and watched on

Fernandes, in his post match interview, admitted the attitude and belief displayed by his team 'was not the best'.

He said: 'The attitude and the belief from the beginning was not the best and that caused us many problems and made us concede early goals.

'After, we have to run back the result and the second half was much better.

'We keep control more, we control the game more. Whenever we have the ball we are more brave.

'We are really disappointed but now it's time to focus on the next game and understand that we have to get back to the performances that we did before — in the belief and everything, in the togetherness principle — and understand that this cannot get us down.'

It was the second time this season that United had been 4-0 down at the break, following their defeat by the same score line to Brentford back in August.

After the humiliation in west London, Ten Hag held a team meeting the following week where he invited everyone to speak their mind.

He revealed after the loss to City that there would be the same offer after what he described as an 'unacceptable' performance.

The Red Devils boss said: 'It's quite simple, it's a lack of belief.

'We were not brave enough, made tactical mistakes and then got hammered.

'When you don't believe on the pitch you can't win games, that is unacceptable.'

United next face Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday before they face an in-form Everton at Goodison Park, who have not lost any of their last seven games in all competitions.

'Thank you for the lesson, Pep!': Erik ten Hag tells his Manchester United side to 'learn' from their derby day thrashing... as he admits the Red Devils were given a 'reality check' by Guardiola's dominant City

* Erik ten Hag thanked Pep Guardiola and Manchester City for beating his team
* United were soundly beaten 6-3 at the Etihad, ending a run of four straight wins
* Ten Hag believes it is part of the process he faces in trying to turn United around
* He confirmed a hoard of first-team star miss the Europa League game in Cyprus

Erik ten Hag has thanked Pep Guardiola and Manchester City for hammering Manchester United in Sunday’s derby and teaching his players a lesson.

United were soundly beaten 6-3 at the Etihad, ending a run of four straight wins that included victories over Arsenal and Liverpool.

Ten Hag believes it is part of the ups and downs he faces in trying to turn United around, and took the unusual step of thanking Guardiola for the brutal reality check.

‘I know when you’re in a process it will not go only upside, you will have setbacks. We beat the No.1 in the league, we beat Liverpool, on Sunday we had a bad at the office and we got beaten,’ said Ten Hag.

‘In this moment, on that day, City were better, we have to accept that. But we can’t accept our performance, that was unacceptable.

Erik ten Hag has thanked Pep Guardiola and Manchester City for hammering his United tea. United were soundly beaten 6-3 on Sunday, ending a run of four straight Premier League wins

‘It was a reality check, so we have to learn from it and carry on. You take respect of the opponent but we still stick to our principles, that’s tactics sometimes, to surprise opponents, to bring something different to your game.

‘We will do that also in the future, but we can get a lot of confidence about this when you beat Arsenal and Liverpool, now we get a reality check with Man City.

‘We know we have to step up, so thank you for the lesson Pep and City, we will take that, we have to understand.’

Ten Hag was joined in his press conference by Bruno Fernandes on Wednesday, and the United midfielder admitted that his team cannot afford to repeat their mistakes from the weekend moving forward after conceding a number of avoidable goals.

'We had a meeting, as the manager said, we went to see the tough things, the mistakes that we did,' he said.

'After the game I said straight away, we conceded three goals on the counter against a team that normally plays in possession. We knew it that when they don’t have the ball they have some players who stay up front, who want to counter, who want to have the ball straight away when they win it, and we could avoid that.

The Dutchman believes it is part of the ups and downs he faces in trying to turn United around. Bruno Fernandes has called for his side to cut out their mistakes as they look to bounce back from Sunday's defeat

'We didn’t and they scored the goals. But we saw that, we know what were the mistakes, and now more than talk about the mistakes, don’t repeat it again. Get back to the best results as we can, win games. In football, that is where it counts.

'Even if we have done a bad game against City and we have scored six goals, and it was 6-6, everyone would probably be more happy, but I think the main thing now is to get back on the winning track and carry on.'

Ten Hag confirmed that Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Donny van de Beek will all miss Thursday’s Europa League game against Omonia Nicosia after they were absent from training on Wednesday.

Asked if any of the players will be back soon, he replied: ‘Yes, in the case of Rapha. I have good hope. Harry will take a little bit longer, and the other two I cannot give a prognosis.’

'The subs really had an impact today and that is really good': Erik ten Hag lauds Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial after their goals from the bench rescued Man United, but admits his side has 'to take responsibility' for mistakes

* Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford rescued United after an early scare
* Manchester United ended up 3-2 winners but trailed at half time
* Erik ten Hag said 'the subs really had an impact today and that is really good'
* He admitted his side has made mistakes that they had to 'take responsibility for'

Erik ten Hag praised his substitutes after Marcus Rashford scored two and set up fellow introduction Anthony Martial as Manchester United escaped a scare at Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League.

Wounded by Sunday's 6-3 derby defeat at Manchester City, the Red Devils were stung in Cyprus after making a strong start as the hosts capitalised on lax defending to go ahead through Karim Ansarifard, but eventually came out 3-2 winners.

'I think we started well, a couple of chances, and then unnecessarily down,' United boss Ten Hag told BT Sport.

'The mistake cannot happen, we have to take responsibility there. But then a really bad 10 minutes and we have to learn from that.'

Asked what he changed at half-time, the Dutchman said: 'A couple of things, especially more runs.

Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford rescued United from the bench after an early scare. Erik ten Hag praised them, saying, 'the subs really had an impact today and that is really good'

'We were too static and we have to make the opposite movement to get behind. That's why also we make two subs in that time and they had really an impact.

'I think Luke and Marcus definitely (helped with that) but also Anthony Martial, of course, with 2-1.

'I think the subs really had an impact today and that is really good. That makes the team stronger.'

The victory provided an important three points in United's quest to reach the Europa League knockout stages, having lost their Group E opener at home to Real Sociedad.

Thursday also gave Martial more valuable minutes after an injury-interrupted start to the season.

'We have already seen that (he can be important) in pre-season,' Ten Hag said of the France international, who scored two off the bench as he returned from injury in Sunday's 6-3 loss at City.

'It was really a big disappointment for this team, for me, when he got injured in the last 10 minutes against Atletico Madrid (in the final friendly).

'So, we missed him in the first couple of weeks and that also had an effect on our team performance.'

United lost their opening two matches of the season but were on a four-match winning run in the Premier League before the loss at neighbours City.

Marcus Rashford may have attracted some England attention after a brace and an assist

Now attention turns to an improved performance at Everton on Sunday, when Ten Hag says they need to put things right after the derby humiliation.

'It has to be only a warm-up,' he said of the win in Cyprus. 'Sunday, especially there, we have to react.

'We have to give the best performance we have and we have to prepare that now.'

Everton is the third of nine fixtures United are playing in October, with Omonia arriving at Old Trafford next Thursday as boss Neil Lennon looks for another positive performance.

'Listen, we rode our luck a lot of times,' the Cypriot side's manager said.

Martial backed up his brace against Man City at the weekend with another well taken goal

'It was a great game, we kept ourselves in the game, whether it be good goalkeeping or United missing good chances.

'And to score two goals against them was probably more than I could have imagined... I didn't think until we scored we believed in ourselves, really, and then it gave us something to hold on to.

'They got two quickfire goals but we had chances at 2-1 to get level.

'The third goal has killed us but, you know, on the balance of play United thoroughly deserved the win.'

Default Re: Manchester United under Erik ten Hag

Antony is a 'one-trick pony', Sancho NEVER runs in behind and United's 'shaky' defence aren't good enough one-on-one... Scholes' damning verdict as Ten Hag's side SCRAPE past Omonia Nicosia

* Paul Scholes has criticised Man United wingers Jadon Sancho and Antony
* He labelled summer signing from Ajax Antony as a 'one-trick pony'
* The former Man United star wants to see Sancho run behind more in games
* Scholes also slams the Man United defence as being too 'shaky' in matches

Paul Scholes has labelled Antony a 'one-trick pony', while also taking aim at Jadon Sancho and Erik ten Hag's defence following Manchester United's unconvincing performance against Omonia in the Europa League.

The £80million forward and his team-mates were not at their best for the Red Devils during their Europa League 3-2 win against the Cypriot side - a victory which saw them move clear in second spot in Group E.

After the game, manager Ten Hag said that he thought his side was too static during a first-half which intially saw them fall behind to Neil Lennon's unfancied side.

The former Manchester United legend agreed with the Dutchman's assessment, while also suggesting that Antony is a bit limited at the moment, as he told BT Sport: 'He was right about the wingers being static.

Paul Scholes has hammered aspects of Manchester United's performance against Omonia. Scholes singled out Jadon Sancho (pictured) for not running in behind enough in the match

'Sancho never really runs in behind. He needs a fast left-back really or a centre forward to link up with and he hasn't really got that at the moment.

'Antony on the other side as well, he doesn't run in behind. He seems to be a bit of a one-trick pony.

'He's always cutting inside and either passing back to the full-back or having a shot. You're thinking he needs to develop a little bit. It's still early days for him, we know that.'

Antony did go close to scoring against Omonia but was not able to influence the game

Scholes also suggested that United's defence 'looked so easy to break through' in Cyprus

Scholes was also critical of the team's defensive performance against Omonia, as he believes that the team were too easy to play through.

He added: 'It was so easy, United just looked so easy to break through. I don't think the back four are good enough one-on-one.

'United were a little bit lucky, despite creating chances at the other end.'

On Cristiano Ronaldo, Scholes admitted that the Portuguese star should have scored on the night after he missed a few chances, including one sitter.

'Ronaldo will be a bit frustrated because he should have scored but you worry about them defensively still. They looked shaky so there's work to do there.'

Owen Hargreaves added: 'Defensively, clearly United still have work to do but they created lots of chances and [Cristiano] Ronaldo should have had a couple really.'

Default Re: Manchester United under Erik ten Hag

Man United player 'told team-mate to concentrate on his own f****** game in heated talks after 6-3 defeat by Man City'... with Martinez and McTominay 'among the most vocal players' in derby inquest

* Man United boss Erik ten Hag demanded an inquest after the defeat to Man City
* Lisandro Martinez and Scott McTominay among the more vocal players in squad
* Ten Hag is hopeful that club captain Harry Maguire can rediscover his best form

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reportedly demanded an inquest following their heavy defeat to local rivals Manchester City.

During the aftermath of the game player's passions are believed to have 'boiled over' during their meeting, with one player telling another to concentrate on their 'own f***ing game'.

Ten Hag called a meeting with the players on the Monday after the hammering at the Etihad Stadium, but things got heated during the analysis of the team's performance. Summer signing Lisandro Martinez and midfielder Scott McTominay are reported to be among the more vocal players in the Red Devils squad.

A source told The Sun: 'Ten Hag asked each player one-by-one to explain their mistakes to one another.

'Some players were blaming others for not covering, which led to full-blown arguments.

'One player told another to "concentrate on your own f***ing game".

'It all got smoothed over, but tensions are high. Ten Hag actively encouraged it.

'He's told them he wants to see that level of passion on the field, not after the game has been put to bed.'

A United source added: 'Erik wants them to get angry. It was frank and heated, and that's what he wants to see.

'You'd be surprised if he didn't encourage it. He wants them to have that fighting spirit.'

Man United manager Erik ten Hag held a meeting with the players to discuss the defeat to City. Scott McTominay and Lisandro Martinez were among the more vocal players during the chat

The report also claims that club captain Harry Maguire was given permission by United to take a break in the week in order to 'clear his head' as he jetted off to Portugal as he is recovering from an thigh injury that he picked up while on England duty.

While the 29-year-old defender was on his break, the team limped to an uninspiring win over Cypriot side Omonia in the Europa League.

Ten Hag wants the struggling defender to find his best form after his stock has plummeted in the last year due to his poor performances and he is desperate to get his captain performing again.

He said: 'I have to back him but I back him because I believe in him.

'I can see the qualities and even after he wasn't in the team he trained really well and, more importantly, the quality was really there.

'You see his career, almost 50 caps for England, for Leicester and Man United - he's performing really well, what you see is high potential.

'And then it's about him. The players in the dressing room, the coaches, the manager believe in him.

'That's what I told him, I'm sure he can do it, and he will turn it around, I'm convinced of that.'

However he had insisted that all injured players must stay at the Carrington training ground as they try to get back to full fitness.

A source said: 'Erik has high standards for everyone to abide by. He expects all injured players to remain with the group.

'He believes they should function as one unit - injured or not.

'But in Harry's case he felt there were exceptional circumstances. He wanted him to have a mental break from the pressure he's under.

'He went away with his family and Erik hopes that will put him in a better place to recover from injury and rediscover his form.'

The Englishman is set to miss out for United in Sunday's Premier League clash against Everton.

Erik ten Hag praises Man United's resilience after Red Devils come-from-behind win over Everton as Dutchman leaps to the defence of Casemiro following Brazilian's error in build up to the Toffees' opener

* Erik ten Hag has praised Manchester United's composure after their victory
* United came from behind to beat Everton 2-1 at Goodison Park on Sunday
* The Dutchman admitted United has been working on the trait behind the scenes
* He also praised Casemiro, who shone in his first Premier League start for the side

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has praised the reaction of his side after they came from a goal down to beat Everton 2-1 on Sunday.

Alex Iwobi gave the Toffees an early lead but United hit back through strikes from Antony and Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored his 700th career club goal before United withstood a late barrage from the hosts.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, ten Hag said he was pleased with his team's composure, admitting it was something that has been worked on behind the scenes at the club.

'We are quickly 1-0 down but the reaction of the team is good,' he said.

'One of our aims is to deal better with setbacks and stay composed. First half [we were] pressing well and it was hard for Everton to come to come into the game, we didn't allow them, happy with that.'

The Dutchman praised midfielder Casemiro, who was making his first league start for the club after his summer move from Real Madrid. Though he was at fault for Everton's goal, he got better as the game went on and put in an impressive performance.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag praised his side's character after their victory. United beat Everton 2-1 after Cristiano Ronaldo netted his 700th career club goal. The Dutchman explained how midfield star Casemiro is important to his United team. The 30-year-old started slow but grew into the game on his first league start for the club

ten Hag did, however, confirm Anthony Martial has picked up a new injury after the forward was subbed in the first half.

'Casemiro will anticipate quickly and you saw how important he is,' ten Hag said.

'He is composed and wins a lot of balls and he grew into the game.

'Martial’s injury is something different, he had a problem in his back, but he was important and we are happy.'

Goodison Park is famous for the home fans backing their team and Sunday was no different, but Everton were unable to find an equaliser despite plenty of late pressure after Marcus Rashford's goal was ruled out for handball.

'The ball can always come in,' ten Hag added.

'I think it was a goal and it was game over, but we had many more spaces we didn’t use and that is the next step.

'It is difficult here, the crowd get behind them but they were six games unbeaten and it is difficult to score against them. Happy with the result and performance.'
