Manchester United have made a surprise £15million bid for Southampton star Sadio Mane.

United made an offer for the Senegalese attacker last week, with Premier League rivals Chelsea stealing a march on the chase for Barcelona winger Pedro.

The Red Devils scouted Mane before he joined Southampton as did Manchester City and Arsenal.

A Southampton source said: 'Mane is a key part of our team and our planning for the future. He wouldn't be sold.’

Club officials deny that a bid has been made for the player and insist that no contact has been made by Manchester United.

But Sportsmail understands the player is keen on the move and talks will progress over the coming days.

Southampton will look to push the offer up to around £25million but United are confident they can wrap up a deal for the 23-year-old.

However, they do not want to sell as they consider him key to Ronald Koeman’s plans for the season.

Mane has three years remaining on his £55,000-a-week deal on the south coast.

United made an offer last week and are thought to be contemplating their next move. Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has a good relationship with Saints officials and will hope that will persuade them to let Mane head north.

The £30m deal for Southampton left back Luke Shaw in 2014 was concluded swiftly and to the satisfaction of all parties. It opened the door for United's £25m swoop for Saints midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin earlier this summer and Woodward is comfortable doing business with the south cast club.

It is hoped he will be able to draw on that connection in recruiting Mane for Louis van Gaal's side.

United revealed on Wednesday that they pulled out of the race to sign Pedro as Chelsea moved to snap up the £22million Spaniard.

Van Gaal’s side were in pole position to sign the World Cup winner after Woodward flew to Barcelona for further talks on Monday.

But, with Pedro heading to Stamford Bridge, it now seems as if Mane is the target for the vacancy in United's attacking options.

The Senegal forward joined Southampton last summer for £11.8m from Red Bull Salzburg and was an instant hit in the Premier League scoring 10 goals in 26 games.

Mane will compete with the likes of Ashley Young, Memphis Depay and Juan Mata if he is to seal a summer move to Old Trafford before the window shuts on September 1.

Van Gaal has spoken of his desire to add pace to his attack in recent weeks and Mane has that in abundance.

The Dutchman said following the £44million sale of Angel di Maria to Paris Saint-Germain: ‘We’re not on schedule to be champions because we need speed and creativity at the front.

‘Whether we can win the title [in the next two seasons] is dependable if we can buy players with speed and creativity.

‘You shall always be compared with other clubs. Barcelona without Neymar and Messi, their speed and creativity, they have Pedro behind. Bayern Munich: Ribery and Robben. After that they can change with Muller and they also had Shaqiri [now at Inter Milan] at other times.

'Chelsea have Hazard, Willian, Oscar — that is speed and creativity. [Ashley] Young had a great season. [Juan] Mata also. But they don’t have the speed of Hazard or Robben. We have to improve our selection in that way.’

'First of all we're very pleased Fraser played his first game in nine months, on a good level,' said Koeman, after Forster featured for Saints' under-21s.

'This weekend is too soon in our opinion, and he will play again with the under-21s on Monday.

'Then after that we will have discussions about what we have to do about our goalkeepers and finally the best will start.

'But that will start after Monday.'
