Double blow for Toffees
Saha and Anichebe still sidelined for Moyes

SkySport - 24th September 2010

Everton have suffered a double blow with the news that Louis Saha and Victor Anichebe face longer spells on the sidelines.

Saha has been missing with a calf problem since the defeat at Aston Villa four weeks ago, while Anichebe has yet to feature this season due to a knee injury.

France international Saha is facing a further three weeks on the sidelines as he struggles to shake off his injury and he has returned to his homeland to receive treatment.

"He goes to a facility in France to get treatment and be looked after and I think it will be two to three weeks before he is available," said Everton boss David Moyes.
Surgery

To add to Moyes' problems, Anichebe has been forced to undergo surgery to repair a troublesome knee injury which is likely to keep him out of action for at least six weeks.

"He had an operation yesterday which will keep him out for six weeks or so," said Moyes.

Spurs face injury crisis with Gallas and King out
ESPNsoccernet - September 27, 2010

Tottenham will have to do without the services of defender William Gallas for the next three weeks after tearing an groin muscle in training on Friday.

Spurs were also without captain Ledley King for Saturday's 1-0 defeat at West Ham United after the defender suffered a groin strain in the same training session - and he also faces weeks on the sidelines.

Crocked Lampard out for another two weeks
ESPNsoccernet - September 27, 2010

Frank Lampard faces at least another two weeks out as he recovers from a hernia operation.

Lampard, who will miss Chelsea's Champions League game against Marseille on Tuesday as well as the crunch Premier League clash with Arsenal this weekend, has also been ruled out of England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro at Wembley on October 12.

Chelsea are hopeful that Lampard will be fully recovered in time to face Aston Villa on October 16.

"Lampard can't play tomorrow," coach Carlo Ancelotti told the club's official website. "If he doesn't play with us, he is not able to play for the national team.

"He needs more time than we expected for his rest. After these games there will be an international break and he will be ready for the games after the international break.

"For now we have to choose [who else to play] up front. Sure we will start [Florent] Malouda and [Nicolas] Anelka but we will have to choose the right position up front.

"It could be [Daniel] Sturridge or [Gael] Kakuta, I could put these two players in, they are ready.

"From the beginning, [Josh] McEachran will go on the bench; he will be ready to go onto the pitch if it is necessary. John Terry will play."

Didier Drogba sits out the second game of his two-match ban.

Ancelotti also fielded questions about Anelka's state of mind in coming up against French opposition, given his high-profile suspension, and retirement, from the national team in the summer.

"Nicolas is always quiet," Ancelotti said. "I don't think he will be afraid or scared because the game is on French television. He is in a fantastic moment and he will play for the team as he always does.

"He is able to play in every position up front. For his kind of skills he is perfect to play up front because he has speed, he has quality and he can support the players who come back from midfield.

"He is a fantastic striker for this reason. He is able to play in every position on the pitch.

"OM [Olympique Marseille] is a good team, with good organisation. They use attacking play and they are quick. We know everything about the individual skills they have but it is difficult to say who is the most dangerous. Usually the most dangerous players are the strikers.

"My players will know everything about the opponent but the most important thing is our play. Obviously we will know the skills of the opponent's team but we must play our way. If we play our best, we will win.

"I don't ask them to have a reaction. We just have to play our football. We have to pay attention and get the points from this game. I don't need to see a reaction from my players; they will have a good game because it is an important game for us to arrive at the top of the group. It is just for this."

Minor surgery for Gabby
Villa striker to miss two weeks of action

SkySports - 1st October 2010

Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier has confirmed that striker Gabriel Agbonlahor is to undergo a minor groin operation.

Earlier on Friday the club's new boss had revealed Agbonlahor was fit and would be available to face Spurs.

"Gabby will be involved. He should be okay," said the Frenchman earlier on Friday on the club's official website.

However, despite the upbeat bulletin on Agbonlahor's fitness, the club have now booked him in for surgery on Monday.

"Gabby will have a minor operation on Monday evening on his groin," explained Houllier.

Painful

"He had to leave training this morning because it was too painful.

"I think the England squad is given on Monday and that has definitely ruled him out. He wouldn't be able to play.

"It is not just a niggle, it is real pain and hopefully the operation will heal that."

"He could be available for the Chelsea game but, if not, definitely for the Sunderland game."

The operation is expected to keep the 23-year-old England international on the sidelines for two weeks.

He will, therefore, be unavailable for England's crucial Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro on October 12.

Newcastle confirm Ben Arfa has broken his leg
ESPNsoccernet - October 3, 2010

Newcastle have announced that Hatem Ben Arfa has suffered a broken tibia and fibula of his left leg.

Newcastle will have to resign themselves to being without Ben Arfa for at least a large chunk of the season, however presently they have offered no indication of how long the winger is likely to be sidelined for.

A Newcastle club statement said: "He will undergo surgery tomorrow morning. Everyone connected with the club sends Hatem their best wishes for a speedy recovery. At this stage no time limit has been put on his expected return date.''

Manager Chris Hughton had earlier said he feared a broken leg during his side's 2-1 defeat at Manchester City.

Ben Arfa, on loan from Marseille, had to be given oxygen on the field after a tackle from Nigel de Jong and was subsequently taken straight to hospital.

"It seems as if he's got a broken leg," Hughton told ESPN. "The news is not good. When something like that happens and then to have some incredible decisions go against us, it's hard to take.

"He has gone to hospital and we will make an announcement in due course but it looks like he has broken his leg. Everyone will have their own opinion but it was a tackle that did not need to be made."

Thigh blow rules Chelsea star Alex out for three weeks
ESPNsoccernet - October 5, 2010

Chelsea defender Alex will be unavailable for up to three weeks due to a thigh injury sustained in Sunday's 2-0 win over Arsenal.

The Brazilian hobbled off in the closing stages at Stamford Bridge after his stunning free-kick had given his side an unassailable lead against their London rivals.

Alex will now miss his country's international friendless against Iran on Thursday and Ukraine on Monday, and Chelsea expect to be without his services for the Premier League tie against Aston Villa and Champions League fixture with Spartak Moscow following the international break.

News of Alex's injury is a setback for Chelsea as his defensive partner John Terry has also been suffering from fitness concerns in recent months.

Terry missed England's opening two Euro 2012 qualifiers due to a hamstring problem and although he has recovered from that injury, the former international captain says he is now suffering from bruised ribs ahead of his country's game against Montenegro on Tuesday.

"I take elbows in the ribs in a lot of games but it is one of them where I have a bit of bruising and the masseurs can't get into it because it is too sore," Terry said. "I had an X-ray and a scan and thankfully it came back all clear. It is a case of getting on with it but sneezing and coughing is really painful."

Zubar injury blow for Wolves
premierleague.com

Wolverhampton Wanderers have suffered a blow with the news defender Ronald Zubar has been ruled out for a month.

The influential French defender has not featured since August and will now not play until November, after undergoing surgery on his ankle.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy confirmed that Zubar had gone under the knife in his native France.

Different Class

"He went out to see the surgeon in France that he's used before with the club doctor Matt Perry and it was decided that was the best course of action," said McCarthy.

"He could have had an injection but the problem would have probably come back. He's having it done some time this week. It's the best time to get it done because we've got two weeks without a game.

"We've missed him and it's a blow because he's played very well and he's a good player. It's been frustrating for him because he twisted his ankle in the first friendly and it's been one thing after another.

"Having said that, Kevin Foley has played excellently for us and I thought he was different class on Saturday.

"We've missed a few players. We haven't had Steven Mouyokolo, Stephen Hunt - although we knew about that - Steven Fletcher has come back from injury and Jelle van Damme has only played bit parts so far. It will be better when we get them all back fully fit."

Benayoun out for months with ruptured Achilles
ESPNsoccernet - October 6, 2010

Premier League leaders Chelsea could be without Yossi Benayoun for a large portion of the season after the Israeli FA revealed he has suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Benayoun, who joined Chelsea in a £5 million deal from Liverpool in the summer, initially suffered a torn calf muscle in the Carling Cup defeat to Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge on September 22.

The midfielder was only expected to be out for three weeks and had linked up with the Israel squad for the upcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers at home to Croatia on Saturday and in Greece next Tuesday.

But the national team's medical staff have discovered a more serious injury to the player's Achilles and it is now feared he will be out for several months.

The Israel captain told his FA's website: "I arrived with hope of helping the national team but unfortunately this is not a simple injury ... an additional test will reveal what needs to be done."

Benayoun will now return to England where Chelsea's medical staff will carry out further tests.

Benayoun, 30, made his Chelsea debut in the 3-1 Community Shield defeat to Manchester United and scored his first goal as the Blues thrashed Wigan 6-0 in the Premier League in August. He has yet to start a league match, making three appearances from the bench, but he was in the first XI for the 4-1 thrashing of MSK Zilina in the Champions League.

"I'm sitting here in the hotel quite sad about this," Benayoun added. "I'm eating myself up from inside when I think about how long I've waited to come to the national team and contribute. Right before the two important games, I suddenly get hurt. Since this is one of my few remaining opportunities to play in the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, I really wanted to take part in these two games."

Meanwhile, Chlesea midfielder Frank Lampard, who has not played for the club since aggravating a hernia problem in August's 2-0 win against Stoke, is hoping to return from injury against Aston Villa next week.

Lampard underwent surgery last month and resumed training only to suffer a groin strain.

He said in the Evening Standard: "I don't really want to set dates but I'm hoping to return after the international break. I've got a good couple of weeks to work with the physios. Hopefully, I won't be too far away."

Beausejour's injury woes continue
Soccernet - October 9, 2010

Birmingham winger Jean Beausejour has been ruled out of next weekend's clash at Arsenal through injury as his frustrating start at St Andrew's continues.

Beausejour was lacking match fitness after signing on the final day of the summer transfer window from Mexican side Club America. Now Alex McLeish's £3.3 million capture is sidelined with a knee ligament strain.

McLeish had hoped Beausejour would be fit to return following the international break after being left out of the home clash with Everton last weekend. But he needs more rest and recuperation and will not be risked at Emirates Stadium.

McLeish said: ``Jean came to us half fit and hadn't played many games and that is part of the problem when you sign players right at the end of the transfer window. Now he's strained his medial ligament and we have to make sure we don't take any unnecessary risks with him.

``He needs to rest to make sure he is right and he won't be available next weekend.''

Beausejour has still to start a Premier League game for Blues although he impressed in the Carling Cup win over MK Dons.
