Too good for drop?

Skysports.com counts down the top ten who thought they could not be relegated

The likes of Hull City, Stoke and West Brom were tipped for relegation at the start of the season but there are one or two unfamiliar names languishing towards the bottom of the table with just three games remaining.

Newcastle may not have been challenging for the title for a number of years but their profile remains extremely high and they have always been able to attract famous players and managers to the club.

There will be a sense of disbelief around St James' Park if they do fall into the second tier but history proves that no club is too big to go down.

Skysports.com counts down the top ten who thought they were too good to drop, only to find out otherwise.

Leeds United - 2004

One of the most dramatic slides in recent years came when Leeds were relegated with just 33 points at the end of the 2003/4 campaign. The Yorkshire club had reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals just three years earlier but financial difficulties resulted in many players being sold and they were helpless to avoid the drop. A 14-year spell in the top flight had come to an end and, unfortunately for Leeds, they soon found themselves spiralling further down and into League One.

West Ham - 2003

There had been a similar shock the year before Leeds' relegation when a West Ham side bristling with young superstars crashed through the trapdoor. A points tally of 42 would normally be enough to survive but, considering the talent at manager Glenn Roeder's disposal, it was still a huge shock that they were anywhere near the bottom three. Joe Cole, Michael Carrick and Jermain Defoe were all key members of the squad, along with the likes of David James, Frederic Kanoute and Paolo Di Canio.

Sheffield Wednesday - 2000

The Owls had gradually become something of a Premier League force during the 1990s and by the end of the decade their squad appeared to have a good blend of exciting foreign talent and solid, homegrown professionals. However, they endured a miserable campaign and went down with just 31 points. The lowest moment was a crushing 8-0 defeat to Newcastle and manager Danny Wilson lost his job before the end of the season.

Blackburn - 1999

Rovers had taken the Premier League by storm after coming up from the second tier, claiming a stunning title success in 1995. But they were unable to live the dream for long and bowed out of the promised land just four years later. Roy Hodgson, now earning rave reviews for his achievements with Fulham, was at the helm for the start of the doomed season before being replaced by Brian Kidd.

Middlesbrough - 1997

Middlesbrough are another North East club facing the threat of relegation this season and if they do go down it will be comparable in terms of an upset to the 1996/7 campaign, when they controversially finished in the bottom three after being deducted three points. Boro, featuring the likes of Fabrizio Ravanelli, Juninho and Emerson, were punished after refusing to play a match against Blackburn at short notice due to the number of players they had sidelined through illness and injury.

Manchester City - 1996

Manchester City fans may have been frustrated by their side's inability to live up to expectations this season but at least they have managed to secure their survival before the last game of the season. Alan Ball's men went into their final match in 1996 with their fate still to be decided and, after clawing back a two-goal deficit against Liverpool, they sat on a 2-2 draw after being given incorrect information about the fortunes of their relegation rivals, when actually a win was required. They suffered the further indignity of falling into the third tier two years later before climbing back up the league ladder.

Nottingham Forest - 1993

The great Brian Clough's managerial career came to an end in disappointing fashion as Forest surprisingly dropped out of the Premier League in 1993. Roy Keane and Stuart Pearce were among those on the club's books but even tenacious characters such as these were unable to reverse a spectacular slump at the City Ground.

Brighton - 1983

Brighton have become something of a permanent fixture in the lower leagues in recent times but they spent four years in the top division from 1979 to 1983. An encouraging 1981/2 campaign was expected to provide the springboard for more success and the following year they made it through to the final of the FA Cup, losing a replay to Manchester United. However, they did not fare so well in the league and had already been relegated by the time they reached Wembley.

Tottenham - 1977

Tottenham slipped out of the top division to the surprise of many in 1977 after a 27-year spell. The likes of Pat Jennings, Steve Perryman and Ralph Coates were all at the club but Martin Peters and Martin Chivers had both left and Glenn Hoddle was still only a teenager in what turned out to be a transitional period. An 8-2 loss to Derby was symptomatic of Spurs' defensive problems, although they managed to bounce straight back up the next year.

Manchester United - 1974 :wew

It seems unthinkable that United, current world and European champions, would ever be relegated but they suffered such a fate 35 years ago. Bobby Charlton and George Best had both left the club and it was another recently departed player, Denis Law, who returned to seal their demise with a goal for Manchester City in the penultimate game of the season.

Premiership star's brother, 17, found dead after drinking session on his last night in Crete party town

The British teenager found dead after a drinking session in a Crete holiday town is the half brother of Aston Villa defender Luke Young, it has emerged.

Andre Young, 17, from Saffron Walden, Essex, died after celebrating the last night of his Greek island holiday with a massive drinking session.

Today England star Luke appealed for information over his brother's death.

Tragedy: Left, Andre Young, 17, who was found dead in Malia on the last night of his holiday; and right, his half brother and Aston Villa defender Luke Young

'My family and I are devastated by the tragic death of my younger brother Andre in Malia, Crete earlier this week,' he said.

'He was a tremendous and talented person and a diligent student and this is such a waste of a promising life.'

The 30-year-old defender appealed for anyone with any information on the last hours of his brother's life to come forward.

He said: 'He went missing on the evening of Monday 10 August and we would be extremely grateful if anybody with any information of his whereabouts during that fateful evening could come forward to assist with investigations.'

A statement released by the family paid tribute to Andre's 'wicked sense of humour'.
It continued: 'Andre was a much loved son, brother, half-brother, grandson, nephew and cousin.

Aston Villa's Luke Young (left) and Manchester City's Pablo Zabaleta (right) battle for the ball during a match in Manchester in March this year. The footballer's family has paid tribute to his half brother Andre today

'He will be dearly missed by all his family and life will never be the same without him.
'He hoped to go to university next year and then have a career which involved changing the world in a positive way for the young people of the future.'

Andre's parents have flown to the holiday island to identify their son, who had been on a week's break with 12 friends.

His body was found at a building site a mile from his hotel. He had serious head injuries.
Police said they are not treating the incident as suspicious.

An eyewitness said Andre had been drinking heavily on the last night and had last been seen staggering down the street on his own.

'He was proper drunk,' she said.

In a second holiday tragedy, a 14-year-old British boy drowned in a lake in France.
Liam Manley died yesterday while swimming out to a raft with a friend at the popular Saint-Estephe lake in the Dordogne.

The bars and clubs in Malia make it an attractive destination for teen pub crawls, drinking sessions and all-night partying

esterday, as Andre's family came to terms with the tragic end to his Greek holiday, his friends set up a tribute group on Facebook in his memory.

Holidaymaker Bethany Billings, 21, who saw the teenager in Malia before he went missing, said he had been drinking with friends.

She told the Daily Mirror: 'He was proper drunk. He knew he'd had enough and wanted to go home.'

She said she last saw him staggering up the street, and added: 'He must have tripped and hit his head.'

More than 200 people have joined the tribute group to Andre on Facebook.
One friend, Rhiannon Parry wrote 'Shocked, really really shocked!! Rest in Peace buddy x'.

Tragedy in paradise: Andre's parents have flown to Malia to identify their teenage son's body

Another, Jay Pledger from Saffron Walden County High School, wrote: 'You will be forever remembered. Maths classes were no good without you mate. R.I.P. x x'.
Andre's grandmother, who answered the phone at the family home in Essex, was too upset to comment.

The teenager's death comes just days after another incident at the same resort when a British man suffered second degree burns in an attack at a bar.

Last week, Marina Fanouraki was hailed as a Greek national heroine when she reportedly poured Sambuca liqueur on plumber Stuart Feltham's private parts - then set fire to it when he continued making lewd advances.

Miss Fanouraki, 26, says she acted in self-defence after Feltham groped her and then exposed himself in a bar.

1. 2. Kennet Andersson, world cup finals 1994. gaya dia yg berlari ke arah gawang...berhenti...trus lengan atas nempel dibadan sambil lengan bawahnya lurus nunjuk kedepan kaya wasit australian rugby kalo terjadi goal. tadinya gw ga ngerti selebrasi ini...baru setelah nonton pertandingan rugby & ngeliat wasitnya gw jadi nyengir sendiri. asli original...dan kayanya ga ada yg ngikutin...

3. Luis Enrique,...in every matches. gaya dia yg ngayun lengan kanan pelan2 keatas...kewl abis bow...

4. Brandi Chastain, terkenal krn 'sports bra jubilation'-nya. yg ini gw cuma sering liat cuplikannya aja. Brandi yg notabene cewe jadi penendang penalty ke 5 buat team USA di final 'women's world cup' 1999. tendangannya bikin USA juara dan Chastain saking senengnya ngelepas kostum sambil berlutut dan teriak kenceng2. mungkin selebrasi ini bisa lebih legendaris kalo instead of a sports bra...she wore a victoria's secret:nyam

5. Lomano Tresor Lua-lua, gaya dia yg ngelakuin multiple hand backspring & diakhiri dgn backflip emang gokil bgt. kalo ga salah malah pernah ampe cedera gara2 aksi koprol ugal2an kaya gitu...
