Default Re: Euro 2020

Euro 2020 in danger of being put back until 2021 with UEFA chiefs' plan to finish domestic leagues this summer set for discussion at next week's coronavirus meeting

* UEFA chiefs are considering a plan to postpone Euro 2020 until next year
* UEFA will propose to use the time for any outstanding domestic league matches
* The news comes after Serie A and La Liga were postponed for the next fortnight
* Crisis talks will also take place over the Champions League and Europa League

UEFA will discuss proposals to postpone Euro 2020 until next year during a Coronavirus crisis meeting on Tuesday.

European football's governing body and the European Clubs Association will discuss a number of measures designed to minimise the risk of Covid 19 during a conference call next week.

Sportsmail understands the plan involves delaying this summer's European Championships and cancelling the summer international window at the start of June.

UEFA will then propose to use the time to play any outstanding domestic league games.

The governing body would also look to complete any Champions League and Europa League fixtures in that period.

Nations will vote on those proposals in next weeks' meeting.

The news means a summer of international football is now in danger of not taking place.

Meanwhile, there is growing doubt over the international fixtures at the end of March because of the Coronavirus.

England are due to face Denmark and Italy but both friendlies are expected to be cancelled.

UEFA chiefs are set to discuss postponing this summer's European Championship until 2021

There is an understandable reluctance from clubs across Europe to release their players for friendly games at the end of the month given the risks attached to travelling.

The matter will be part of UEFA's discussed on Tuesday when crisis talks will also be held over the Champions League and Europa League - with cancellation of those competitions also up for discussion.

With the coronavirus outbreak paralysing the continent, European football's governing body will decide how to react.

A statement on their website read: 'In the light of the ongoing developments in the spread of COVID-19 across Europe and the changing analysis of the World Health Organisation, UEFA has today invited representatives of its 55 member associations, together with the boards of the European Club Association and the European Leagues and a representative of FIFPro, to attend meetings by videoconference on Tuesday 17 March to discuss European football's response to the outbreak.

'Discussions will include all domestic and European competitions, including UEFA EURO 2020.

'Further communication will be made following those meetings.'

Serie A and La Liga have suspended matches - and although the Premier League are yet to do so - UEFA could follow suit with the situation becoming almost untenable.

Real Madrid's second leg of their last 16 clash against Manchester City next Tuesday has been called off, with the Spanish side all in quarantine until at least March 27 after a club basketball player tested positive for COVID-19.

Serie A in Italy, along with all top-level sport, is off until April 3.

La Liga in Spain have suspended competition for at least two weeks. A meeting between the Spanish Football Federation, the football union in and the league itself on Thursday resulted in the suspension of the next two matchdays in the top tier.

The Premier League is at present continuing with weekend matches as usual and UEFA will provide an update on their decisions after next Tuesday's meeting.
