Jonathan Van-Tam 'urges Premier League players to get vaccinated as soon as possible in talks with club captains' as deputy chief medical officer warns stars they 'can't outrun the virus' after addressing myths around Covid

* Van-Tam has reportedly urged all Premier League players to 'get vaccinated'
* England's deputy chief medical officer held a virtual meeting with the 20 Premier League captains earlier this month to dispel myths around the vaccine
* Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire was 'extremely supportive' of the idea

England's deputy chief medical officer Jonathan Van-Tam has reportedly urged all Premier League players to 'get vaccinated' as soon as possible after warning them that they 'can't outrun' the virus.

A virtual meeting on August 2 was held by the Premier League with all 20 teams' captains in a bid to dispel any myths around the Covid jab and get vaccinated before the start of the new campaign.

According to The Telegraph, Van-Tam and the Premier League medical officer Mark Gillett looked to reassure the players over the vaccine in the hope the information would reach their team-mates.

The report goes on to claim that Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire was 'extremely supportive' of the idea to get double-jabbed and will encourage his team-mates at Old Trafford to follow suit.

Many players left the country this summer for holiday breaks or tournament football when all adults under the age of 30 were invited to take up the vaccine, with some yet to do so.

It comes after confirmation that players in England's top division would not be forced to get vaccinated, despite clubs fully encouraging their players to do so.

Jonathan Van-Tam has reportedly urged all Premier League players to 'get vaccinated'. It comes after the Premier League confirmed players will not be forced to accept the vaccine

Premier League chief executive told The Telegraph about the message that was being sent to the players in the virtual meeting.

Masters said: 'We [Premier League] cannot mandate vaccination and we are not [doing that]. We are trying to explain to the captains who then explained to the squad players - and this message will be coming through from club doctors and club executives - that if you are not vaccinated it might make life more difficult for you. You won't be able to do things that vaccinated people can.

'Professor Van Tam explained the potential downsides or risks of vaccination are far outweighed by the potential risks and downsides of getting Covid. He said that one thing is very sure: you will either get vaccinated or get Covid. You can't outrun it. Eventually you will get it. From his perspective he was trying to do a little bit of myth-busting around some of the issues or views out there.'

The Premier League's pandemic protocols will remain in place for players at training grounds and in dressing rooms as there are fears the season could unravel because of the disruption caused by positive Covid-19 cases.

Van-Tam held a virtual meeting with the 20 Premier League captains earlier this month, including Liverpool's Jordan Henderson and Manchester United's Harry Maguire. There is a concern Covid outbreaks could still impact the return of football this season

It needs only two or more positive tests at a work building, such as a training ground, for Public Health England to intervene and potentially close a training ground.

Several players have expressed concerns about the vaccine.

Everton midfielder Fabian Delph published a quote on Instagram from the Healing Chamber, a holistic medical practitioner based in Charlotte, North Carolina.

'It's now a 'conspiracy theory' to believe that the immune system is capable of doing the job it was designed to do,' the post read. The former Liverpool defender, Dejan Lovren, has said that nobody should be forced to be vaccinated.

'Everyone should choose, when I read people who are not vaccinated will not be able to find a job, I wonder if it is compatible with human rights,' Lovren said. 'I do not think that vaccines are dangerous but no one can make me take it.'

Lovren, who is now with Zenit St Petersburg, was eventually vaccinated ahead of representing Croatia at Euro 2020.

Leon Legge, who plays for Port Vale, shared anti-vaccine sentiments on social media with nearly 10,000 followers.

In one post, he wrote: 'People don't realise that the vaccine hasn't enough evidence or data to be even be legally called a vaccine.'

Bristol City said they would educate staff on vaccinations after striker Nahki Wells shared anti-vaccine information on social media before deleting it hours later. He posted a series of conspiracy theory memes, including one purporting to be advice on 'how to legally decline a vaccine'.

Premier League clubs started their vaccinations programmes over the summer, with many players now double vaccinated.

Covid officers will continue to patrol training grounds to ensure players do not socialise for longer than 15 minutes.

It was a lack of vigilance that allowed Ben Chilwell and Mason Mount to chat to Chelsea team-mate Billy Gilmour after the England-Scotland Euro 2020 game for more than 20 minutes, which meant Chilwell and Mount had to isolate after Gilmour caught coronavirus.

Default Re: Premier League - News and Rumors

The new Premier League ball has received a flat reception... with the garish design the ideal excuse for a goalkeeper to point to when the first howler of the season inevitably takes place

* The ball is a 'hallucinogenic blend of crimson circles and swirling black lines'
* The garish mixture of line and colour makes it the ideal target of goalkeeper's ire
* One scientist says the design helps players 'read the pace and spin of the ball'
* Sportsmail's Danny Murphy eagerly awaits a keeper speaking out in protest

Beyond the much-needed return of capacity crowds and the merciful decline in both VAR-enforced interruptions and lamentable handball decisions, there has been another striking difference to the new Premier League season.

A hallucinogenic blend of crimson circles — at least that's how Nike described the colour — and swirling black lines, the new top-flight football has arrived with such little positive response that you might have wondered how it got past the prototype stage.

As our columnist Danny Murphy writes in today's newspaper, the Nike Flight ball not only looks too garish, but the nauseous blend of line and colour makes it prime material for the next goalkeeper excuse for some grievous howler.

The new Premier League football has received little praise despite scientists' endorsement. The new top-flight ball's design was implemented to 'drive enhanced visual performance'

Quote:
NEW BALL COULD CAUSE ERRORS

By Danny Murphy

It won’t be long before a goalkeeper makes a howler and blames the new Nike Premier League ball for the mistake.

They will argue they were looking at three different colours as it came towards them at speed. That’s when it becomes a problem.

I have to admit I don’t like it. It’s too garish. I’ve sat in the Match of the Day studios looking at the ball and it doesn’t look right. I think the players will adapt to it if they have to but I’m not sure they will be overly impressed.

As a player, I didn’t like having to get used to different footballs. Even changing the match ball for the UEFA Cup was something I noticed. I would have preferred to have stuck to the same one for every game.

I understand the modern Premier League is about marketing and change can be beneficial. But this match ball with the explosion of colour is unnecessary for me. I’m waiting for that first keeper to publicly agree!
That the liquid black swirls were inspired by the league being 'one of the most exciting and connected leagues in the world', as the ball's promotional material puts it, should surely offer its designers only limited mitigation.

But perhaps justification for the ball's appearance can be found in its supposed practicality.

An unidentified scientist apparently told the manufacturers that the 'crimson circles drive enhanced visual performance, allowing the players to read the pace and spin of the ball, react quicker and feel confident in their decisions'.

And Professor Andrew Stockman, an expert in human vision at University College London, suggests its substance could yet emerge on the pitch.

'In the absence of any performance data, it seems reasonable,' he says. 'Having a regular pattern of crimson circles around will help players better gauge the angle of spin in any direction and the speed of the ball — as opposed to a less regular or random pattern.'

Danny Murphy fears that goalkeepers will blame any howlers on the ball's unusual pattern

No more betting firms to sponsor front of football shirts after Government's review of gambling laws - with wider ban on advertising on TV commercials and pitchside hoardings under consideration

* Sportsmail understands that outlawing front-of-shirt logos of gambling companies is set to be included on a white paper published this winter
* Nine Premier League clubs have gambling companies as a front-of-shirt sponsor
* A ban on betting advertising on pitchside hoardings and TV commercials is also under consideration but less likely currently
* All but one of the Premier League clubs partner with betting firms in some way

The Government is set to ban betting firms from sponsoring football shirts following its review of gambling laws.

Sportsmail understands that outlawing front-of-shirt logos of gambling companies is almost certain to be one of the proposals included on a white paper to be published this winter.

A wider ban on betting advertising in sport — including pitchside hoardings and TV commercials — is under consideration but is less likely at this stage.

Newcastle (Fun88, left) and Southampton (Sportsbet.io, right) are two more Premier League clubs with front-of-shirt gambling sponsors

This season, nine of the 20 Premier League clubs have gambling companies as their front-of-shirt sponsor, as well as another six teams in the Championship. Those deals are estimated to be worth a combined £100million a year.

A recent study also found that all but one of the Premier League clubs partner with betting firms in some way, as do 15 Championship sides. Such deals could be allowed to continue with MPs keen to protect the finances of less affluent clubs.

A source close to the review said: 'We are pretty sure there is going to be an end to front-of-shirt advertising. Everybody is expecting that. Reformers want more but a lot of politicians are worried about the lower leagues.

'The Government thinks front-of-shirt will catch the headlines and it will feel like it has made a bold statement.'

A review of the 2005 Gambling Act was launched by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) in December 2020 and the call for evidence closed in March.

The Government's white paper — a policy document setting out proposals for future legislation — is due to come out at the end of this year or in early 2022.

Newly-promoted Watford are sponsored by Stake.com at the front of their first-team shirts

There will then be a three-month consultation period before the bill goes to Parliament, meaning any changes affecting sports teams are unlikely to come into effect until 2023 at the earliest.

A DCMS spokesperson said: 'We are currently undertaking a comprehensive review of our gambling laws, including advertising and marketing, to make sure they are fit for the digital age.

'We are determined to tackle problem gambling in all its forms and the work will build upon our strong track record of introducing measures to protect those at risk. No decisions have been taken.'

Chris Philp was appointed as the new Gambling Minister on Wednesday and is thought to be keen on reform, as is new Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries.

The all-party parliamentary group for gambling-related harm (GRH APPG) published a report last year recommending a ban on betting advertising in sport.

Labour MP Carolyn Harris, the group's chair, told Sportsmail: 'Banning front-of-shirt ads is of course the right thing to do, but it just scratches the surface.

'We're bombarded by gambling adverts and that has to stop. Adverts should be completely banned to protect children and prevent harm.'

Vice-chair Iain Duncan Smith, the former Conservative leader, added: 'While I would welcome any move to reduce gambling advertising, and removing ads from the front of shirts would be an important first step, much more needs to be done.

'Ads are everywhere — on hoardings, in magazines, online and on TV. The only way to prevent children being exposed to gambling ads is to ban them.'

Last week, England's most-capped male footballer Peter Shilton joined campaigners to hand in a 12,000-strong petition to 10 Downing Street.

The 71-year-old ex-goalkeeper, who had a 45-year gambling addiction, delivered a letter to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and said: 'The law needs to change'.

A ban on front-of-shirt sponsors would be the biggest change to advertising in sport since tobacco promotion was banned in the UK in 2003.

In an interview with Sportsmail last year, EFL chairman Rick Parry said the timing of reforms 'couldn't be worse' given the financial struggles of clubs in the pandemic. The EFL's own title sponsor is Sky Bet.

'The last thing we need at the moment is for restrictions on other valuable sources of income, because they can't be just switched over night,' said Parry.

'If not betting, which market should we go to?'

The Premier League responded to the Government's call for evidence earlier this year.

They believe there is no definitive link between sponsorship and problem gambling and that no change should be implemented without first identifying how sponsorship revenue would be replaced.

James Grimes, who founded the Big Step campaign to tackle football's relationship with gambling, said: 'A shirt sponsorship ban would be a welcome and significant acceptance of the harm caused by gambling advertising in football. But this single measure would be relatively redundant if adverts are still permitted pitchside, during match broadcasts and online.'

Manchester United's 'lack of Covid-19 vaccine uptake among players is seen as problematic within the Premier League and rivals are becoming frustrated' as stars are urged to get their jabs

* Widespread opposition to Covid-19 vaccines exists among top-flight footballers
* Only seven Premier League clubs have more than 50 per cent of players jabbed
* Reports claim Manchester United are not close to getting a fully-jabbed team
* The rest of the league are said to be frustrated at United's lack of vaccine uptake
* FIFA, Gareth Southgate and the Premier League want their players vaccinated

Manchester United are still a long way from getting the majority of their squad vaccinated against coronavirus and their rivals are getting frustrated with the club over the issue, according to reports.

Sportsmail revealed last week that there is widespread opposition to vaccines among Premier League footballers, with almost two-thirds of top-flight players are yet to be fully jabbed, and many refusing altogether.

Only a handful of Premier League clubs are believed to be close to 100 per cent vaccinated among their playing staff. Liverpool and Leeds are understood to be considered in that category, while fellow top-flight sides Wolves and Brentford have been public in stating recently that the majority of their squads have been jabbed.

But according to The Times, Man United's lack of Covid-19 uptake has frustrated the rest of the league, who see the Red Devils as the biggest and most influential club in the country.

The report adds that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad are not close to the likes of Liverpool and Leeds in terms of their high vaccine uptake, despite the opposite message coming out of the club.

Manchester United's lack of Covid vaccine uptake has frustrated the rest of the Premier League, say reports. The Red Devils are reportedly not close to the likes of Liverpool and Leeds whose squads are close to 100 per cent fully vaccinated

Overall, data came out last week stating that only seven clubs' squads are more than 50 per cent fully vaccinated in England's top-flight league. The data is surprising given a Mail on Sunday report found that a quarter of Premier League first-team squads have had Covid during the pandemic.

A Premier League document stated: 'We are considering if and how best we can "reward" those squads/players who are most Covid-compliant and who have opted to be vaccinated.'

Jurgen Klopp, manager of United's arch-rivals Liverpool, admitted his disbelief at the sheer number of players who are refusing to get the coronavirus jab last week, by reiterating the argument that the vaccine helps other people as well as individuals.

The German, whose mother passed away from Covid-19 last year, said: 'We've all probably been in the situation where we had a beer or two and thought we still could drive but the law says we're not allowed to, so we don't.

'This law is not for protecting me, it's for protecting all the other people. The vaccination is the same.

'I don't understand why that is a limitation of freedom because, if it is, then not being allowed to drink and drive is. I got the vaccination because I was concerned about myself but even more so for everyone else around me.

'If I get it and suffer - my fault. If I get it and spread it around to everyone else - my fault and not their fault. Where did I get the knowledge from that I think it makes sense to get the vaccination? I called doctors who I've known for years. Most specialists tell us the vaccination is the solution for the situation in this moment.

'I think we (at Liverpool) can say we have 99 per cent vaccinated. I didn't have to convince the players, it was more a natural decision from the team. I can't remember really talking to a player and convincing him why he should because I'm not a doctor.

'What I would give, like in a lot of other situations, would be my advice - but it was not necessary.'

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed at the end of August that he is vaccinated - but maintained that he could not force any of his players to join him in getting jabbed.

The Norwegian told a pre-match press conference at the time: 'They (his players) are not all double jabbed, no. I am, put it that way.

'I encourage the lads to take the vaccination but we can't force anyone to do that. We're still wanting everyone to be double-jabbed and it's up to them, and it's still possible to take them.'

The vaccine debate is also touching the England national team, after reports emerged this week that at least five Three Lions stars have refused to take the coronavirus jab.

Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp could not believe how many players have refused the jab. Man United's Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said in August he cannot convince his players to get jabbed. Gareth Southgate is concerned about the reluctance among England players to take the jab. World football governing body FIFA have put their support towards getting the vaccine

Earlier this week, the partner of Manchester City and England star John Stones reposted an anti-vaxx message on Instagram to her 45,000 followers. Beauty clinic boss Olivia Naylor uploaded a recent post highlighting comments from NBA basketball star Jonathan Isaac, who claimed he'd be protected from the virus by natural immunity.

It is not known whether the England international is one of the five Three Lions stars to have refused the coronavirus vaccine but there are fears that his partner's post will dissuade other people from getting the jab.

World football governing body FIFA made the first clear statement of its kind on the issue this week, with a spokesman saying: 'We encourage COVID-19 vaccinations and endorse the World Health Organization's position: safe, fair, and equitable access is critical in all countries. Players should not receive priority access to vaccines.'

However, FIFA are also talks with Qatari authorities about scrapping the mandatory vaccination requirements for the World Cup tournament at the end of 2022, practically ending any doubts that unvaccinated players will not be allowed to compete at the event next year.

England manager Gareth Southgate was part of an NHS appeal to convince members of the public to get the jab towards the start of the vaccine roll-out, though the Three Lions boss admits he is in the dark over his own squad's status.

'Our medical team would know (how many are vaccinated) but even I wouldn't,' he said last week.

'What we do know is that even with the vaccination it is not going to stop people catching it. So in terms of our concerns, on a broader welfare thing, it is helping everybody to get through this pandemic and I don't see another way other than a vaccination programme.'

Toon takeover is DONE! Saudi Arabian consortium complete £305m deal to gain control of Newcastle and end Mike Ashley's 14-year reign - just days after gulf state settled beIN piracy row

* Newcastle's long-awaited £305million Saudi takeover has now been completed
* Deal was announced on Thursday, ending Mike Ashley's 14-year reign at the club
* The news comes hours after gulf state settled their piracy row with beIN Sports
* Saudi's Public Investment Fund is led by Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman and the takeover will make Newcastle one of the world's richest football clubs

Newcastle United are under new Saudi ownership after a £305million deal was agreed with Mike Ashley and signed off by the Premier League.

A statement released by the Premier League on Thursday afternoon confirmed the takeover had now been given the green light.

It read: 'The Premier League, Newcastle United Football Club and St James Holdings Limited have today settled the dispute over the takeover of the club by the consortium of PIF, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media.

'Following the completion of the Premier League's Owners' and Directors' Test, the club has been sold to the consortium with immediate effect.

'The legal disputes concerned which entities would own and/or have the ability to control the club following the takeover.

'All parties have agreed the settlement is necessary to end the long uncertainty for fans over the club's ownership. The Premier League has now received legally binding assurances that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia will not control Newcastle United Football Club.

'All parties are pleased to have concluded this process which gives certainty and clarity to Newcastle United Football Club and their fans.'

Mike Ashley's 14-year reign as owner of Newcastle has come to an end with a £305m takeover

Takeover is backed by Saudi's Public Investment Fund, led by Prince Mohamed bin Salman (R)

The takeover was stopped in its tracks by a piracy dispute between the Gulf state and its Premier League broadcast partner beIN Sports, but that was settled earlier this week, paving the way for the takeover to be completed.

A statement from the new owners read: 'An investment group led by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), and also comprising PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media (the 'Investment Group'), has completed the acquisition of 100% of Newcastle United Limited and Newcastle United Football Club Limited ('Newcastle United' or the 'Club') from St. James Holdings Limited. All requisite approvals have been obtained from the English Premier League and the acquisition was completed on 7 October 2021.

'The Investment Group is comprised of long-term, patient investors who have every confidence in the future success of the Club. Today's announcement is the conclusion of a thorough and detailed process that has allowed the Investment Group to arrive at a deal that benefits all stakeholders and will leave Newcastle United well-placed to pursue a clear, long-term strategy.

'His Excellency Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Governor of PIF, will serve as Non-Executive Chairman of Newcastle United. Amanda Staveley, chief executive of PCP Capital Partners, will have one seat on the board. Jamie Reuben will also be a director of the Club, representing RB Sports & Media.

Fans gathered to celebrate outside St James' Park on Thursday as the takeover was confirmed

'For PIF, one of the world's most impactful investors, the acquisition is in line with its strategy of focusing on key sectors including Sports and Entertainment, and aligns with PIF's mission to actively invest over the long term – in this case, to harness the Club's potential and build upon the Club's legacy.'

Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Governor of PIF, said: 'We are extremely proud to become the new owners of Newcastle United, one of the most famous clubs in English football.

'We thank the Newcastle fans for their tremendously loyal support over the years and we are excited to work together with them.'

Staveley, Chief Executive Officer of PCP Capital Partners, said: 'This is a long-term investment.

'We are excited about the future prospects for Newcastle United. We intend to instill a united philosophy across the Club, establish a clear purpose, and help provide leadership that will allow Newcastle United to go on to big achievements over the long term.

'Our ambition is aligned with the fans – to create a consistently successful team that's regularly competing for major trophies and generates pride across the globe.'

Jamie Reuben of RB Sports & Media, said: 'We look forward to a great future for Newcastle United. Newcastle is a fantastic city, which is why our family has been investing heavily in the area for many years. To become part of this great Club and its amazing fans is a privilege.

'We will build a true community Club, based upon our family's knowledge of the city and in line with our plans that have been worked on closely with Newcastle City Council to deliver long-term sustainable growth for the area.'

The deal was initially abandoned in the summer of 2020 when the group were unable to provide separation between themselves and the Saudi state, headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Now, though, they have been able to provide sufficient proof that the Saudi state will not be in control of the club, and they have passed the Premier League owners' and directors' test.

The news will delight Newcastle fans, who flooded social media to celebrate when it was first revealed that the takeover was back on track on Wednesday afternoon.

Steve Bruce's team currently find themselves second-bottom of the Premier League table, but it is anticipated that a spending spree could now follow the mega-money takeover

The north-east club are now set to become one of the richest in the world, and it is expected that the takeover will pave the way for a spending spree in the coming transfer windows.

When it was revealed on Wednesday that the deal was back on, a source told Sportsmail: 'If all of this had been done 18 months ago, the takeover would have been signed off already.

'The Premier League could not approve a takeover whereby one of its member clubs would be owned by a state it believed to be guilty of piracy against the League and one of its broadcast partners. The League has tried to sue the Saudi state nine times in relation to piracy.

'That was why the buyers had to prove separation from the Saudi state. That was almost impossible, especially given the revelations about Mohammed bin Salman texting Boris Johnson and pressurising him to influence the deal.

'But those issues, including piracy, have now been resolved. Crucially, the Premier League do not want to be seen to be connected directly to the Saudi state.'

The Daily Mail revealed in April that Bin Salman had lobbied Mr Johnson last year. Bin Salman told the Prime Minister: 'We expect the English Premier League to reconsider and correct its wrong conclusion.'

He also warned that Anglo-Saudi relations could be damaged if the move was not approved.

High-level talks are said to have continued in recent weeks and compromises have been reached, with the Saudis taking the lead on negotiations.

We understand as recently as last week beIN Sports sent a list of websites to Saudi officials, informing them of ongoing piracy. Within days all of those websites were shut down and assurances have been made that a $1billion damages claim will also be settled.

The approval of the takeover will lead to criticism of the Premier League by human-rights groups, especially as Bin Salman was named by US intelligent services as signing off on the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018.

It is likely the League will attempt to sidestep such questions by insisting that the PIF-led consortium - and not the state - are the owners of the club.

Premier League signs a new six-year US TV rights deal with NBC after the network beat off competition from both CBS and ESPN to land the contract 'worth more than $2BILLION' - doubling the top-flight's income Stateside

* The Premier League have signed a new six-year TV rights deal with NBC in the US
* NBC beat CBS and ESPN for the right to show 380 games a season in America
* Reports claim the historic new TV deal is worth more than $2billion in total
* That reported fee is double what NCB paid for the American TV rights in 2015

The Premier League has announced it has signed a new six-year deal with NBC to show top-flight football in the US, which is believed to be worth more than $2billion.

The deal is understood to be over double the $1billion fee NBC paid for Premier League TV rights in 2015, meaning it is the biggest ever overseas TV deal in the history of the English top-flight.

Comcast's NBC have now beaten off competitions from ViacomCBS and Disney's ESPN to the rights and will now show 380 live matches every season.

The Times claim that the historic US TV deal is over the $2billion mark, with Premier League chief executive Richard Masters hailing the dedication of both the US channel and supporters of the Premier League in America.

Masters said in a statement: 'We are delighted to announce our new US broadcast deal with NBC Sports, who have been brilliant partners for the Premier League over the last nine seasons.

The Premier League has signed a new six-year deal NBC for its TV rights in America in a reported fee of over $2billion. It is a boost to the finances of both the Premier League and its clubs over the coming years

'NBC Sports has significantly strengthened the popularity of the League in the United States in that time through its fantastic coverage and promotion.

'NBC Sports' Premier League Mornings programming is now a real institution among supporters in America, with fans getting up early to come together and cheer on their favourite club, week in, week out.

'It's an exciting time for football in the US and we look forward to continuing to work with NBC Sports to bring our competition to even more fans over the next six years.'

There were concerns during the coronavirus pandemic that the appeal of English football in the United States may have been diluted.

Premier League CEO Richard Masters hailed both NBC and top-flight supporters in America. NBC beat ESPN and CBS to the TV rights in America in the biggest overseas TV deal ever. NBC paid $1bn for the privilege to broadcast Premier League fixtures in the US back in 2015

But Premier League clubs are therefore set for a massive windfall in the deal, which also includes exclusive rights to Spanish language coverage of the division.

It is significant news for football as a whole, with the deal indicating that the sport is breaking through in a US market previously dominated by basketball, American football, and baseball.

The Covid pandemic saw Premier League clubs lose around £2bn in broadcast and matchday revenue across the two disrupted seasons, so the new US deal will come as a huge financial boost.

When the UK Premier League TV rights renewal came round in May of this year, Sky, BT and Amazon agreed to roll over their existing £5bn agreement, ensuring no financial improvement on the previous deal.

The Premier League rights deal is just the latest football contract to be purchased by an American broadcaster, after various deals were struck in recent months.

In May, ESPN acquired the rights to show Spanish LaLiga matches in a contract worth $1.4bn (£1.04bn), while CBS have the rights to show the UEFA Champions League, Serie A and most recently the FA Women's Super League.

On NBC, Premier League matches averaged 879,000 viewers per match for the 2020-21 season, up two per cent from the previous year, and it does seem to be increasing with Manchester City's 4-1 away win against Liverpool in February attracting an audience of over 1m.

The news comes on the same day the Premier League announced funding amounting to £20m will be sent to clubs in League One and League Two to aid their financial recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Premier League bosses agreed a £250m rescue package with their Football League counterparts in December last year, which gave League One and League Two clubs access to £30m in funding immediately.

But the top flight have now continued their financial aid to tiers three and four, as well as giving £5m to the 66 clubs across the three National League divisions between now and 2025 to continue to help them battle the devastating financial impact of the pandemic.

Premier League POSTPONES four more matches this weekend due to Covid as pressure mounts on the top flight to pause the season amid the surge in Omicron cases

* Five of the 10 matches scheduled for the weekend have been postponed
* However Premier League is resisting calls for all matches to be called off
* Several Premier League clubs have reported Covid outbreaks this week

The Premier League were forced to call off half of this weekend's fixtures on Thursday night due to multiple Covid outbreaks — but insist the rest of the matches will go ahead, along with the majority of next week's festive programme.

Brighton's lunchtime trip to Manchester United was postponed earlier in the day, with Southampton v Brentford, Watford v Crystal Palace, West Ham United v Norwich City and Everton v Leicester City later called off after further positive tests for players and staff.

As first reported by Sportsmail on Monday, several club executives fear a temporary shutdown may be the only way to break the current rapid transmission of the Omicron variant. Since then, eight top-flight games have been postponed.

Tottenham's match at Leicester on Thursday was called off after Brentford and Burnley both suffered late postponements earlier in the week. And the sense of deepening crisis was heightened when half of this weekend's programme was wiped out.

Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers was unable to put together a 14-man squad for Everton clash

Brentford boss Thomas Frank called for a 'circuit-breaker' blanket postponement of this weekend's matches.

'The Covid cases are going through the roof at all Premier League clubs,' he said. 'To postpone this round and the Carabao Cup would give everyone a week to clean the training ground so everything is fine and we break the chain at every club.'

But the Premier League has insisted the show must go on and are confident emergency protocols introduced earlier this week — including daily testing for all players and staff — can stem the flow of the virus.

A statement read: 'The League understands fans will be disappointed these matches have had to be postponed and apologises for the inconvenience and disruption caused.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank has demanded that all of this weekend's fixtures are called off. The Bees have recorded 13 positive cases among players and club staff as of Thursday

'All other fixtures due to be played this weekend are currently scheduled to proceed.'

All of this weekend's postponements were signed off at an emergency meeting of the Premier League Board.

Brentford and Watford were unable to train properly as their facilities have been closed, while Norwich, Leicester and Manchester United do not have the requisite 14 available players to fulfil their fixtures.

It is understood United only had seven players available and on Thursday shut down their first-team operations at Carrington for the second time this week to tackle the outbreak.

Sportsmail also understands a row is brewing among the jabbed and jabbed-nots in the top flight.

It is understood officials at many of the clubs with higher vaccination uptakes suspect that there is a link between some of the clubs worst affected by Covid and poor uptake levels.

And they harbour concerns that those who have managed to get games called off are securing an unfair advantage in the fight for European places and against the drop.

There are even suspicions among some that clubs with long injury lists are using positive cases to ensure potentially tricky matches are postponed.

Some on the other side of the argument point out Brentford have the second-highest vaccination rate in Premier League (over 90 per cent), but currently 13 positives, while Spurs are over 85 per cent but have had three games called off.

Many Premier League players have cancelled Christmas party plans for this weekend.

Sportsmail knows of at least one squad reporting positive Covid cases this week who had planned a day out in London on Sunday, but the players have now cancelled the trip.

Leicester confirmed their Premier League clash at Everton on Sunday has been postponed just hours after Thursday's meeting with Tottenham suffered the same fate.

The Foxes are one of many top-flight clubs to suffer a Covid-19 outbreak within the squad, which left them unable to put together a 14-man squad – the League's minimum requirement – to face Spurs.

Once Leicester announced they would be closing their training ground for 48 hours from Thursday, their chances of facing Rafael Benitez's team at Goodison Park looked increasingly remote, as Mail Online reported on Thursday lunchtime.

A Leicester statement read: 'Leicester City Football Club can confirm that Sunday's Premier League visit to Everton has now been postponed after a meeting of the Premier League Board.

'The decision, which follows the postponement of Thursday evening's fixture against Tottenham Hotspur, was again taken with guidance from medical advisors in light of further positive tests for COVID-19 within Leicester City's First Team Squad over the last 24 hours.

'First Team operations at Seagrave remain closed for a period of 48 hours to reduce the risk of further infection.

'The Club regrets all inconvenience caused to both Leicester City and Everton supporters by the postponement, with a new date to be confirmed in due course.'

On Wednesday manager Brendan Rodgers expressed fears that the League were prioritising their lucrative television contracts over the health of players and staff.

He said: 'I'm pretty sure that's the case, yeah. In terms of players, managers and coaches, we all want to play the games. But ultimately the health of a player is the priority.

'If you have players available, you get a better product. Whatever team you put out, supporters will demand you win the game, and for some squads – ourselves included – that's a real challenge at the moment.'

HOW OMICRON HAS THE PREMIER LEAGUE ON EDGE

Brentford
The Bees have 13 cases among players and staff – the club are now calling for a circuit-breaker shutdown to help clubs recover. Their training ground has been closed and as a result their trip to Southampton on Saturday has been postponed.

Leicester
Would have been without several players for Tottenham's visit on Thursday due to Covid before the game was postponed - despite initial calls being rejected - hours before kick-off. Their training ground was closed on Thursday morning to contain the outbreak but given they have an insufficient number of players available, their weekend trip to Everton is also off.

Manchester United
Case numbers are currently unknown but a large outbreak saw their game with Brentford postponed. Calls to have Saturday's game with Brighton to be postponed were accepted on Thursday due to the outbreak at the club.

Brighton
Had request to have Wednesday's game with Wolves postponed rejected by the Premier League following an outbreak at the club. Graham Potter confirmed there were 'three to four' positive cases before the game. Game with Manchester United has now been postponed.

Norwich
Dean Smith was facing an anxious wait to discover the full extent of the outbreak at the club. The Canaries had discussions with the Premier League over Saturday's clash with West Ham and it was agreed to postpone as they have an insufficient number of players available.

Watford
Saw the game with Burnley postponed just hours before kick-off. Case numbers currently unknown. With their training ground closed, their home match with Crystal Palace has now been confirmed as postponed.

Tottenham
Spurs were the first Premier League club to be hit by the Omicron variant last week and saw games against Brighton and Rennes postponed after cases reached double digits among players and staff. Those who tested positive for the virus are expected to return in the next couple of days after completing their 10-day self-isolation period. Spurs' clash with Leicester on Thursday is postponed despite initial demands to have the game called off were rejected.

Chelsea
After Brentford, the Blues became the latest club to be hit by a Covid outbreak, after it was confirmed ahead of their game with Everton that three more first-team players had tested positive for Covid, with Mateo Kovacic the first Chelsea player to get the virus this week.

Liverpool
It was confirmed just an hour before kick-off against Newcastle on Thursday night that Fabinho, Curtis Jones and Virgil van Dijk are all out having tested positive for Covid.

Southampton confirm takeover by Sport Republic, led by Serbian billionaire Dragan Solak and former Brentford chief Rasmus Ankersen, as Chinese businessman Gao Jisheng relinquishes control of the club

* Serbian billionaire Dragan Solak has bought a £200m share in Southampton
* Sport Republic have bought Gao Jisheng's 80 per cent majority shareholding
* They aim to create a network similar to those of City Group and Red Bull group
* Jisheng became Southampton's majority shareholder back in August 2017

Southampton have ended their search for new owners after a group led by a Serbian billionaire bought a £200million controlling stake in the Premier League club.

Sport Republic have bought Gao Jisheng's 80 per cent majority shareholding and have promised to make Southampton a 'cornerstone' of the group of clubs they plan to buy.

They aim to follow their opening purchase by creating a network similar to those of the City Group, who own Manchester City, and the Red Bull group, whose clubs include Germany's RB Leipzig and Austria's Red Bull Salzburg.

Dragan Solak, founder of telecoms and media firm United Group, who has a personal fortune of more than £1bn, will be Sport Republic's lead investor.

Rasmus Ankersen, former FC Midtjylland chairman and Brentford director of football, will be the group's CEO. He left those jobs last month after masterminding historic rises at both clubs.

Another Dane, London-based investor Henrik Kraft, is Sport Republic's chairman and he and Ankersen are set for roles on the Southampton board.

Solak, a keen golfer described as a serial entrepreneur, said: 'Southampton will be a cornerstone of the organisation we plan to build.'

United Group founder Dragan Solak has completed a deal to buy Southampton. Southampton have confirmed they have been taken over by Sport Republic, led by Solak

Kraft added: 'We will be an active and engaged owner. Our ambition is to build a portfolio of high-influence stakes in football clubs and other sporting assets across the world. Southampton is a great first step.'

Southampton's squad were told about the developments and potentially exciting times ahead on Tuesday morning, after CEO Martin Semmens met manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and captain James Ward-Prowse to inform them that new owners were on the way.

Katharina Liebherr retains her 20 per cent stake and Semmens will continue to be in charge of the club's day-to-day running.

Gao became Southampton's majority shareholder in August 2017 when he paid around £210m for 80 per cent of the club.

However, the Chinese tycoon has been keen to sell up for some time with those efforts intensifying following the outbreak of Covid, when it became increasingly difficult to take money out of his homeland.

A deal with former Bordeaux owner Joseph DaGrosa was close at one stage last year but ultimately failed to materialise.

The stalled process while Saints searched for a suitable buyer capable of paying the asking price amid the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic has held up their hopes of progressing on the pitch.

Hasenhuttl has managed to keep the club afloat in the Premier League.

Previous owner Gao Jisheng (centre) bought his 80 per cent share from the Liebherrs in 2017

However, the lack of investment in the squad has been reflected by their fall out of the top 10 in the last four seasons after four successive top-half campaigns.

Kraft insisted that they would not be starting any 'revolutions', but Sport Republic's takeover has brought renewed excitement at Southampton about what the future may hold.

Solak has transformed United Group from a 'small cable operator in Central Serbia' into a leader in south-east Europe in the telecommunication and media sectors.

UG Telecom deliver broadband, mobile and pay-TV services to more than 40million people across eight countries.

Along with Solak's personal wealth, United Group make over €2bn a year.

English Premier League dominated European rivals, the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A, attracting 3.2 billion viewers worldwide and bringing in 500,000 tourists in 2019-20 – while contributing £7.6 billion to the UK economy, despite Covid

* New analysis of the Premier League published today reveals worldwide appeal
* Report by EY financial services for 2019-20 season shows popularity overseas
* Premier League also generated £7.6 billion for the UK economy; the 20 elite clubs paid out £3.6 billion and supported 94,000 jobs despite Covid pandemic

The dominance of the English Premier League over rival European competitions like the Bundesliga, Ligue 1, La Liga and Serie A has been set out in a new report.

An analysis of the economic and social impact of the top flight has revealed the unrivalled popularity of top-flight English football – and highlighted the contribution the competition makes to the UK economy.

Despite trailing our rivals on the pitch in international competitions for decades, the domestic game has left Germany, France, Spain and Italy way behind.

An eye-popping 3.2 billion viewers watched Premier League matches around the world in 2019-20, with games beamed into 878 million homes world-wide, according to a study carried out by EY financial services, on behalf of the top flight.

In addition, 528,000 people travelled to the UK to watch matches, despite Covid having a major impact on the season.

As previously reported by Sportsmail, the success of Premier League football contributed £7.6 billion to the UK economy during the 2019/20 season, which was suspended for more than three months due to the pandemic.

Premier League Chief Executive Richard Masters said: 'Our clubs produce exciting, competitive football featuring the best players and managers in the world, which is followed by billions of fans globally and supporters filling stadiums each week.

'This success and popularity enables us to continue investing in the competition and provide unparalleled support to the whole game and communities, ensuring the positive impact of the Premier League is felt far beyond what we see on the pitch.'

The report, published today, is a 'tour de force' for the top flight.

It comes at a time that the league is fighting a rear-guard action against proposals for the creation of an independent regulator for football, which would shift power from the Premier League, EFL and FA to a new body.

The regulator has been recommended in an extensive, fan-led review of football governance by former sports minister and Conservative MP, Tracey Crouch.

The League and its clubs generated a total tax contribution of £3.6 billion to the UK Exchequer in 2019/20, £1.4 billion of which was accounted for by Premier League players, according to the new analysis.

The success of the Premier League is underpinned by its global appeal.

Overseas TV income in the Covid-affected season was £1.4BN, almost half of the UK's total earnings from television programmes sold abroad in 2019-20. It was also more than double the overseas TV income of the other four major European football leagues added together, which amounted to £1.2BN.

The annual report concludes that the popularity of English football among international fans stems from its competitive nature. While financial power and success is concentrated among the Big Six clubs, it is shared more widely than in the other European leagues and on any given day, even the bottom sides can still overturn those at the top.

The report says this is supported by a more equitable distribution of the money generated by the Premier League than in the other European competitions.

In the English top flight, the highest ranked team receives 1.6 times the funding from central revenue distributions, compared to the bottom team. The ratio is less than half of that in Spain's La Liga.

Premier League is the richest league in the world and a new report underlines its dominance. The popularity of English football overseas has underpinned Premier League success. Premier League chief executive Richard Maters says top flight has supported lower leagues

Quote:
PREMIER SUPPORT

The Premier League has delivered assistance to all levels of football and communities during the Covid pandemic, says chief executive Richard Masters.

The pandemic caused huge disruption, with 2019/20 season temporarily suspended. During that and the following season, 472 matches were played behind closed doors or with limited capacity, resulting in an estimated 18 million reduction in attendances.

However, the Premier League continued to be successful and support others, says Masters.

‘We are proud of the level of support we provide the football pyramid, as well as funding community organisations of clubs up and down the country,’ he said.

‘The importance of their work has been more evident than ever in recent times, providing help to people who needed it the most.'

Premier League clubs played an important role in supporting fans and communities during the pandemic by helping to provide food and support to vulnerable people and hosting NHS staff and vaccination centres, among many initiatives.

During the Covid-affected season, the top flight supported 94,000 jobs and still contributed £7.6 billion to the UK economy

Regionally, the league is calculated to have contributed £2.1 billion to the economies in London and North West and £500M in the Midlands.

‘In the absence of [Covid] disruption, the economic impact of the League would have been significantly higher,’ the report states.

The League provided solidarity and parachute payments to 138 EFL and National League clubs, with a total of £455 million distributed to other leagues and community football in 2019/20.
The talent in English football is enhanced by the number of high-quality internationals who want to play here.

And in a social media age, where football fans around the world follow individual players as well as teams, the presence of international stars fuels popularity.

At Euro 2020, there were 117 players from Premier League competing, with another 34 from lower leagues, making a total of 152. In comparison, there were 91 players from the German leagues.

The Premier League saw 2.1BN interactions through its social media channels in 2019-20. While most came from the UK, the next highest figure was in Egypt, where two million people follow the top flight's Facebook page.

Teddy Sheringham of Nottingham Forest fires past David James of Liverpool to score the only goal in a 1-0 win for Forest in the first Premier League game to be televised on Sky

The cost of screening Premier League football at home and abroad has rocketed since 1992 and the increase in broadcast revenues has driven the rising value of the top flight

The interest generated by Mohamed Salah, Liverpool's record-breaking and title winning forward, and captain of the Egypt national team, has led more people to express an interest in the Premier League (85 per cent), than the North African countries' own competition (80 per cent).

All of this reflects well on the UK as a whole, according to the report.

'International players, by promoting interest in the League within their home countries and vice versa, help build enduring connections that support engagement between the Premier League and the international community,' it states. 'Taken as a whole, these connections support the Premier League's global appeal and promote a positive perception of the UK.'

And the financial success of domestic football is beginning to bear fruit on the pitch in international competitions.

Premier League clubs spend more on youth development than their European rivals and the Elite Player Performance Pathway, which is a partnership between the top flight, EFL and FA, is generating new stars like Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Mason Mount, who have helped England to a semi final finish in the 2018 World Cup and finalist in Euro 2020.

Some Premier League clubs have warned that the introduction of an independent regulator for football would undermine the top flight's success.

Ministers are due to decide on Crouch's proposals in the coming months, in particular, whether a regulator should be set up by an Act of Parliament, which would give it sweeping powers to license clubs and intervene at poorly-run outfits.

Crouch, the EFL and its clubs as well as fans, have argued that a regulator is required to put English football as a whole on a stable financial footing and reduce the possibility that clubs will over reach themselves and risk their futures, like Derby County, or even put themselves out of business, like Bury and Macclesfield.

While the Premier League is an enormous success, the rest of the English football pyramid is financially unstable.

Top flight clubs have suggested that if implemented, they could undermine the economic impact of the current 'product'

Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear likened Crouch's recommendations to Maoism.

'All I'm trying to do is get some money down the pyramid,' Crouch told MPs on the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport select committee before Christmas.

'My understanding is that the Premier League… is going to argue very strongly for the independent regulator to not be set up via legislation.

'I think they will push back very, very hard on the statutory aspect of the independent regulator, and would rather it was a unit in the Football Association.'
