Giggs claims BBC crown
13/12/2009 21:00, Gemma Thompson
Giggs claims BBC crown Ryan Giggs has added yet another accolade to his already bulging collection after being crowned the 2009 BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The midfielder beat off competition from a host of top sportsmen and women, including F1 champion Jenson Button and world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis who came second and third respectively. The Reds' record appearance-maker came out on top after winning the public vote becoming the first footballer to win the coveted award since former Red David Beckham in 2001. Giggs was presented with his award by Olympic cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy and England cricket star Freddie Flintoff at a star-studded ceremony on Sunday night at Sheffield Arena. Ryan was visibly shocked during the presentation, but absolutely delighted by the honour. "This is a big shock," admitted the 36-year-old. "I'd like to thank the BBC for putting on a brilliant night and everyone who voted for me. "Honestly, this feels unbelievable. I've been lucky enough to win a lot of things in my career, playing with great players, playing for the greatest manager that's ever lived, and playing for the greatest club. "I grew up watching the Sports Personality programme and to join the greats who have won it is unbelievable. A huge thank you again to everyone."

Manchester United star Ryan Giggs named Sports Personality of the Year 2009
By Ivan Speck Last updated at 11:57 PM on 13th December 2009 A televisual event which confounds expectations more times than not last night honoured Ryan Giggs as a surprise BBC Sports Personality of the Year. The Manchester United winger earned the viewers’ accolade for his durability, honesty and loyalty, beating Formula One world champion Jenson Button into second place by 55,000 votes. Clearly surprised by the award, the 36-year-old Giggs said: ‘That is a big shock, as you can tell by the speech I’ve prepared. As if I wasn’t nervous enough, my heroes Seb Coe and Michael Johnson are sitting right here in front of me. ‘Liberty and Zach, my kids, you can go to bed now. You’ve got school in the morning. ‘I’ve been lucky enough to win a lot playing for the greatest manager who ever lived and the greatest team, but this is up there with all of that. I grew up watching this show. ‘It’s more special because I’m in my thirties. You don’t expect to win things at this age. You expect to win them when you’re younger and supposedly in your prime. ‘I might have to put the award on the table when I go in and speak to the club about a new contract.’ Button narrowly failed to follow motor racing’s great tradition in the awards programme, instead emulating Lewis Hamilton, who finished runner-up in each of the previous two years. Button said: ‘At least I respect the people who beat me very much. Ryan has achieved a lot in his career. Because of how long he has been at the top in his sport he is the Michael Schumacher of football in some ways.’ Fittingly in her home town, Sheffield’s world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis came in third place. While the 516,473 votes cast for the main award were 200,000 less than last year, it nonetheless compared favourably with previous years, privately pleasing BBC executives who had feared a rout by ITV’s X Factor. The ceremony, conducted in the cavernous 11,000-capacity Sheffield Arena, included the glitz and glamour that has become the stock-in-trade for a show which used to be more a review and celebration rather than a sporting version of the Comedy Awards or the Brits. So little action was screened in-house and presented to the viewing public at home that they may have been tempted to believe the BBC have lost the rights to all live sporting events, relying instead on technicolour wizardry to showcase national passions. At least this year’s quirky sideshow creditably showcased the gymnastics talents of floor world champion Beth Tweddle and men’s all-around silver medallist Daniel Keatings. Giggs Raih BBC Sports Personality of The Year
Doni Wahyudi - detiksport Manchester - Setelah banyak penghargaan diraih sepanjang karirnya, Ryan Giggs kini dapat sesuatu yang belum pernah diterima. Winger Manchester United itu baru saja terpilih sebagai BBC Sports Personality of The Year. Giggs berhak mendapat BBC Sports Personality of The Year 2009 setelah mengumpulkan suara terbanyak yang berjumlah 151.842 atau sekitar 29,4% dari keseluruhan suara. Giggs menjadi pesepakbola pertama dalam delapan tahun terakhir yang memenangi BBC Sports Personality of The Year. Re: Ryan Giggs
Manchester United star Ryan Giggs named Sports Personality of the Year 2009
Roll of Honour: All the winners from the event Football did take another award, with Fabio Capello being named Coach of the Year, although both he and the rest of the country will hope the Italian repeats the feat in 2010 for his achievements in South Africa, rather than merely being rewarded for leading England through a seamless World Cup qualifying campaign. Capello said: ‘I’m very proud to win this award. I want to share it with all the staff and all the players who will be with me in South Africa. I’m very happy here. I like to live in England and I hope to stay when my contract ends in 2012. ‘People are really happy but always the question I get is, “Are you going to win the World Cup?” Yes, I hope so. We need to have our best players there fit, not tired when we arrive in South Africa.’ Tom Daley, one of Sportsmail’s Magnificent Seven for the London Olympics, became the first person to win the Young Sports Personality of the Year Award for a second time. Having thrilled the nation at the age of just 15 by triumphing in the Roman summer sunshine to become men’s high board diving world champion, the Devon schoolboy, remarkably, will still be eligible to win the award for a third time in 2010. He said simply: ‘Wow. I’m still buzzing. I never knew that nobody had ever won this award twice. It’s crazy. There is so much young talent out there nowadays.’ In a non-Olympic year, the destination of many of the awards came as no surprise. England’s cricketers were named Team of the Year, while sprinter Usain Bolt won the Overseas Personality for the second year in succession. The Jamaican could easily eclipse three-time winners Muhammad Ali and Roger Federer in the years to come. Jose Maria Olazabal presents Seve Ballesteros with the BBC Sports Personality Lifetime There was not a dry eye in the houses in either Sheffield or in northern Spain, when Severiano Ballesteros was announced as the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award. Ballesteros reluctantly decided not to make the trip to Sheffield, adhering instead to the advice of the doctors under whom he is still receiving treatment after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in October last year. Still, the 52-year-old was clearly overcome after being presented with the trophy by Jose Maria Olazabal at Seve’s home in Santander. He said via video link: ‘It’s a pity I’m not there. I’m very sorry. Thank you very much to everyone.’ Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/ Last edited by rondwisan; 14-12-2009 at 11:39 PM.. |
