Xabi Alonso to snub Liverpool in favour of move to Chelsea

XABI ALONSO will snub the chance to rejoin Liverpool and Jose Mourinho is waiting to pounce.



Anfield fans were left devastated back in 2009 when Rafa Benitez sold Alonso to Real Madrid for £30m.

However, the Spaniard is out of contract at the end of the season and the Reds were lining him up for a shock return.

Boss Brendan Rodgers had been given the go-ahead to move for Alonso despite the fact he's now 31.

Liverpool's owners - the Fenway Sports Group - have implemented a strategy to invest in youth but they were willing to waive their beliefs, like they did for Kolo Toure, to sign Alonso.

But the midfielder doesn't want to return to Liverpool, according to reports.

Chelsea are ready to take full advantage by making a move to sign Alonso, who is renowned as one of the best passers in the world.

Mourinho worked with the Spain star during his time at the Bernabeu and is confident he can tempt him to Stamford Bridge.

Xabi Alonso Blow Dealt by Real Madrid to Manchester United and Chelsea



Carlo Ancelotti has moved to warn clubs away from Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso, saying that the Spaniard is a "vital player" for the club.

Alonso's contract at the Bernabeu expires in June and Nick Lustig of the Daily Star reports that Manchester United, Chelsea and Juventus are just some of the sides interested in agreeing a pre-contract agreement this January.

However, Ancelotti is keen to hold onto his midfield anchor and, per Italian outlet Mediaset (h/t Lustig's Star article), noted:

Xabi is a vital player for Madrid now that he's recovered from injury. There are only two players like him in Europe. One is Pirlo and the other is Xabi.

However, we have no intention of making a player exchange deal with Juventus. There is no substance to any rumour like that.

Pirlo is another playmaking veteran entering the final six months of his Juve contract, earning a raft of transfer interest, much of which involves Premier League side Tottenham—per Gary Jones of the Daily Star.

Speculation around Alonso has increased significantly since it was discovered that fellow Real midfield asset Sami Khedira was likely to miss the rest of the season after having surgery on an ACL tear.

The German's injury means that Alonso becomes that much more of an important figure for Ancelotti, who will now be desperate to see the player put pen to paper over a contract extension.



The Metro's Daniel Jones reported earlier this week that Real are willing to meet Alonso's contract demands—worth another two years of his services with an annual wage of £4.2 million.

In the new year, the 31-year-old will be free to discuss a contract with any club. At Chelsea, the attraction would be a reunion with former boss Jose Mourinho. United, meanwhile, have a strong track record when it comes to winning major honours.

However, Alonso's importance to Madrid is clear. Since returning from injury, the midfielder has helped the Spanish giants net 15 goals in three La Liga outings.

As seasoned a professional as he might be, Alonso's extension would be like signing a new player for Los Merengues, who need his talents in the engine room more now than ever.

Real launch inquiry after winger Di Maria makes crude gesture while being subbed

Real Madrid have launched an internal inquiry after their Argentina winger Angel Di Maria was seen to grab his crotch while he was being substituted in Monday's 3-0 La Liga win at home to Celta Vigo.

Di Maria, who was replaced by Gareth Bale midway through the second half at the Bernabeu and was whistled by the home fans as he trudged off, insisted it was 'a natural gesture' and said he apologised if anyone had found it offensive.

The incident was widely debated in the Spanish and Argentine media on Tuesday and prompted further speculation that Di Maria, who has made fewer appearances since the arrival of world record signing Bale, might be sold either in the January transfer window or at the end of the season.

'I think it is right, not only for those who have opened the enquiry but also for me so I can explain the situation and what it (the gesture) was,' he said.

Xabi Alonso Signs 2-Year Contract with Real Madrid



Amid speculation about a potential move during the January transfer window, Xabi Alonso has reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension with Real Madrid.

Tomas Roncero of AS provided further details on the agreement:

The midfielder's salary will increase considerably, from 4 million euros to 6 million euros after tax, an offer which exceeded those made by top European clubs such as Juventus and a number of Premier League clubs.

Word of the new deal committing the talented midfielder to the Bernabeu comes after various reports about his availability due to a contract that was set to run out at season's end. Tony Banks of the Daily Express reported Chelsea were among the interested English clubs.

If the Guarin deal falls through, Chelsea are expected to move for Alonso as a short-term option, with the Spain star keen on a return to the Premier League.

Former club Liverpool are also interested, as is Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini.

Those clubs will be now forced to look in another direction to fulfil their midfield needs.

Alonso missed the early portion of the campaign while recovering from groin and foot injuries and is still in the process of returning to top form. But the 32-year-old defensive midfielder has appeared in eight league matches and sports a pass success percentage of more than 90, according to WhoScored.com.

His ability to provide stability in the midfield along with his big-match experience, both with Real Madrid at the club level and Spain at the international level, make him a valuable asset for the club. Locking him up for a couple more years was the right move.

One player who will be happy about the new contract is Cristiano Ronaldo. Jon Rogers of Sports Direct News provided comments from Alonso's teammate, who said he wasn't sure how things would play out but definitely wanted him to stay:

That's a messy situation which the president has to deal with, I don't want to know about it. But there's always a solution to every situation. Death is the only thing for which there is no solution. He's 32, there's nothing I can tell him. But I hope he stays with us.

With Alonso's situation settled, there's one less distraction as Real Madrid attempt to make a second-half charge in La Liga.

Real Madrid May Cash In With $10 Million A Year Microsoft Stadium Deal

Real Madrid is already the most valuable sports team and team brand in the world. But a a deal with Microsoft MSFT +0.55% could make the Spanish soccer team much richer if a report in a Spanish newspaper is accurate.

El Confidential is reporting that Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is negotiating to attach the name of the technology company to Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid’s home pitch. Such a deal could be worth several million dollars a year given recent other sponsorship agreements for soccer teams that like Real Madrid are global brands.

In 2011, Manchester City and Etihad Airways agreed to a $600 million, 10-year stadium naming rights and shirt deal. Then in 2012, Arsenal, another iconic English soccer team, inked a five-year, $240 million shirt and stadium naming rights agreement with Emirates.

What could a stadium naming rights deal pay Real Madrid, which earlier this year signed a $39 million a year shirt deal with Emirates? Although the split in value between stadium naming rights and shirt sponsorship rights has was not broken out for either Manchester City or Arsenal, the $31 million a year shirt deal Liverpool inked with Standard Chartered in 2010 offers some guidance.

The Arsenal deal with Emirates–which unlike the Manchester City deal does not smell like a related-party transaction–is worth an average of $48 million a year for its dual sponsorships. Subtracting $31 million for the shirt portion of the deal leaves $17 million.

That figure is likely too high given that stand-alone shirt deals for Arsenal would be worth more than Liverpool given the former team has been superior in recent years. So let’s call it $10 million. That would be a nice chunk of change for Real Madrid given the $20 million a year contract they recently gave superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, and the record $132 million they paid Tottenham before this season for Gareth Bale.

While the Microsoft deal could be a long shot, there has been a surge in technology companies looking for stadium partnerships in the U.S., particularly in the NFL where teams are trying to make their stadiums more tech-friendly. AT&T and the Dallas Cowboys hooked up on a stadium naming rights deal earlier this year. And Yahoo! has a technology deal with the San Fancisco 49ers new stadium.

Moreover, Real Madrid and Gates already have a relationship. Earlier this year, the Real Madrid Foundation and Microsoft signed a collaboration agreement to promote education in Latin America and the Caribbean through sports and technology.
