Manchester United next manager: Jose Mourinho writes up transfer wishlist

Jose Mourinho has already made transfer plans for Manchester United, according to reports. The 53-year-old Portuguese has been hotly tipped to succeed Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford this summer, and he is understood to have drawn up a list of potential transfer targets.

Van Gaal's position at United has come under threat following a string of disappointing performances and results. Mourinho – his one-time assistant – remains confident he will replace the Dutchman over the coming months.

It was recently reported that Van Gaal, who joined the club in 2014, feels he will remain in charge of United beyond the end of the current campaign. But according to ESPN, that perception is centred on the internal politics of the Premier League club, who have not shared their long-term plans with the coach.

Members of the United hierarchy remain reluctant to appoint Mourinho due to his combative reputation, but his representatives have reportedly held extensive talks with the club about the position. What's more, United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has a close relationship with Jorge Mendes, the coach's agent.

Mourinho reportedly wants the Old Trafford club to sign as many as five new players in the summer, including Harry Kane and John Stones. He is also said to have approved the idea of signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Paris Saint-Germain.

Manchester United Transfer News: Saul Niguez, Kostas Manolas, Top Rumours

Manchester United reportedly face a challenge to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez ahead of La Liga leaders Barcelona, while the Old Trafford club may miss out on Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas.

Both players are on the United radar, but their availability has been called into question by recent reports.

First, Spanish website Fichajes.net (h/t Jamie Anderson of the Daily Star) has stated Atleti's Spanish rivals, Barca, have first refusal on Niguez. The clause in the 21-year-old's contract favours Niguez staying in Spain: "Barca demanded the option be included when David Villa was sold to Atletico in July 2013, along with former Liverpool loanee Javier Manquillo, who's made just six appearances under Diego Simeone."

This is a stipulation that was included in the player's deal when he was 18. Since then, Niguez has made tremendous strides in the Spanish capital.

Specifically, he's emerged this season as a key member of the Atletico midfield. Equal parts destroyer and box-to-box creator, Niguez has displayed a complete game, evidenced by eight goals and a pair of assists, per WhoScored.com.

That level of production has generated strong interest from England's top flight. In March, Spanish radio station Cadena Ser (h/t the Daily Mirror's Liam Corless) reported Madrid rebuffed an offer worth €30 million from United's Premier League rivals, Arsenal.

In January, Alex Terrell of the Sun stated United were hoping £15 million was enough to beat the Gunners to Niguez during the winter transfer window.

It's clear both clubs are keen on this energetic, creative and tenacious midfielder. But if Barca do have the inside track, expect Arsenal and United to be frustrated in their attempts to bring Niguez to the Premier League.

Manolas Unaware of United Interest

David Amoyal of GianlucaDiMarzio.com has reported United have met with the agent of Chelsea target Manolas in the "last few days." But the player himself is denying any knowledge.

Speaking to Sky Italia (h/t Jamie Anderson of the Daily Star), Manolas played down the United talk: "Manchester United? I know nothing, my agent tells me nothing. I have to be focused on Roma, I still have three years on my contract. After the end of the season we will look at things together with Roma."

That United need a quality centre-back this summer is beyond question. In particular, the Red Devils require a defender more athletically impressive than Daley Blind. The Dutchman's lack of pace and imposing brawn have been exploited more than once this season.

Manolas fits the bill as a centre-back who covers ground quickly and isn't afraid to aggressively attack the ball. Paired with the generally improved Chris Smalling, Manolas would give United's back four the solid base it has missed the last three seasons.

That makes it worth the Old Trafford club's while to beat Chelsea to the Greek international.

Jose Mourinho Remains Confident of United Job

Of course, United's transfer plans will hinge on who the manager is after this season. ESPN FC's Miguel Delaney insisted former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is still confident he'll be in charge in the red half of Manchester next season.

Delaney also named some of the potential targets Mourinho will covet if he does succeed Louis van Gaal: "Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane and Everton's John Stones are top of Mourinho's wishlist, but he has expressed approval to the idea of signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic from Paris Saint-Germain should the possibility arise, and United have already initiated moves to bring in Renato Sanches from Benfica."

If John Stones and Renato Sanches are deemed priorities in this summer's transfer market, United won't mind letting Barca and Chelsea have clear paths to Niguez and Manolas.

Whether it's Mourinho or Van Gaal calling the shots, United's squad needs help at the back and in the midfield. The current rumours reflect the obvious weaknesses that have consistently undermined the club this season.

Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Andre Gomes, Zlatan Ibrahimovic Rumours

Valencia midfielder Andre Gomes is reportedly poised to follow Jose Mourinho to Manchester United next season.

According to Calciomercato (h/t Jamie Anderson of the Daily Star) the player and the manager both share the same agent in Jorge Mendes, and he’s promised Mourinho that Gomes will head to Old Trafford should he get the nod to take over from Louis van Gaal this summer.

It’s suggested that Juventus are also interested in the elegant midfielder, who has been an occasional bright spot in a disappointing campaign for Los Che.

Mark Ogden of the Independent has reported it’s not clear whether Mourinho will move to United or not yet, with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly keen on him and the Red Devils undecided on Van Gaal.

Meanwhile, Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t Jack Staplehurst of the Daily Express) thinks it’ll be Ryan Giggs getting the job at Old Trafford.

Assuming he does get the job, Gomes would be a wonderful first signing for Mourinho. As the above clip illustrates, the Portuguese is a player that’s so easy on the eye, capable of floating past opposition defenders with his brilliant balance.

If there’s one concern, it’d be over the 22-year-old’s apparent lack of appetite for the physical battle. It’s something Sport Witness suggested may prevent United from going after the player.

Nevertheless, Gomes is still young, still learning and after a season in which he’s seen oscillations in both form and fitness, he will be a much more mature presence next term. His adaptability, flair and willingness to commit opponents in the middle of the field is something United have lacked in 2015-16, too, with their attacking play often pedestrian.

It’s what could give Gomes an edge over a player like Juan Mata or Ander Herrera, neither of whom possess that burst with the ball at their feet to take them past defenders. If Mourinho was to get Gomes at United next season, he could channel the youngster’s attributes and be in possession of a very fine player.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Hints at Premier League Move

Paris Saint-Germain’s virtuoso striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed he will leave the French capital at the end of the campaign and teased a possible move to the Premier League, with Manchester United said to be keen.

“This is my last season [in Paris]? That you know already?” was the 34-year-old’s response when asked about his future, per Jack Gaughan of the MailOnline. “You are very curious. I have won a lot of trophies but I still want to win a lot more. I want to do it wherever I can.”

When asked about English clubs offering him a deal, Ibrahimovic responded “I have had lots [of offers].”

Although he’s in the twilight of a tremendous career, the Sweden international would still be box-office viewing in the Premier League.

United, who Gaughan noted are interested in the player, would be an ideal destination for Ibrahimovic. Old Trafford has always loved characters who may be a little arrogant at times in their playing style but can back it up with their end product; think Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ibrahimovic is a player who ticks those boxes, and as is evident by his goalscoring record this term, he is still one of the deadliest finishers in world football.

The Red Devils are renowned for giving young players a chance, and as effective as Ibrahimovic remains, it’d be understandable if some at the club did have concerns about him taking crucial playing time away from the likes of Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard or Marcus Rashford.

But for young players like those aforementioned, working alongside Ibrahimovic in training every day for around two years is only going to be beneficial.

After all, for all his bravado, the Swede is a wonderful centre-forward and a serial winner in many different divisions across the continent. That kind of influence will only serve to lift standards at a club that’s lost its edge in recent years.

Manchester United Transfer News: John Stones, Renato Sanches, Latest Rumours

Jose Mourinho reportedly "fully supports" Manchester United targeting Benfica's Renato Sanches and Everton's John Stones in the summer transfer window, with the Red Devils also eyeing Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Portuguese manager now "expects" to take over from Louis van Gaal as United manager in the summer and would back moves for centre-back Stones and midfielder Sanches having pursued them both when in charge at Chelsea, according to James Ducker in the Telegraph.

Ducker added that Paris Saint-Germain striker Ibrahimovic "has admitted he would happily play under Mourinho at United" and is out of contract with the Ligue 1 giants at the end of the season.

Recent reports indicated United could be willing to offer the 34-year-old a £600,000-a-week deal to join them in the summer, per Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (via the Mirror's Aaron Flanagan).

French newspaper L'Equipe (via Sky Sports News' Kaveh Solhekol) also recently reported United currently have no competitors for the Swede in the Premier League.

Despite his age, Ibra would undoubtedly be a fantastic addition to the United squad as the Red Devils are in desperate need of more proven firepower in attack.

The former Ajax, Juventus and Inter Milan star has netted 32 goals in Ligue 1 this season, just eight fewer than the entire United side have managed in their Premier League campaign, per WhoScored.com.

With Mourinho potentially set to take over at Old Trafford—he managed the Swedish superstar previously at Inter—it seems highly likely that Ibrahimovic could be a United player next term.

Stones and Sanches would both be excellent signings in the long term for the Manchester giants.

Everton's 21-year-old English centre-back has had a topsy-turvy season, but he has huge potential and could partner well with Chris Smalling at United.

Chelsea failed with numerous bids for Stones last summer, the last of which was worth £38 million, per the Daily Mail's Sami Mokbel.

With the England international's contract at Goodison Park set to run until 2019, Everton will not let him go cheaply, but United have shown in recent transfer windows that they are not afraid to splash the cash.

Sanches, 18, is also unlikely to come cheap, with Benfica's valuation of the youngster reportedly £46 million, per the Manchester Evening News' Alice McKeegan.

He has enjoyed a breakout season in 2015-16 and proved to be a potentially world-class box-to-box midfielder—see some of his highlights below:

With Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger both nearing the end of their respective careers, Sanches could be a future star in the middle of the park for United and could prove a perfect partner for Morgan Schneiderlin.

United are unlikely to be the only club interested in the Portuguese youngster this summer, but they can afford to pay big money for him, and the appointment of Mourinho as manager could prove the deciding factor in their bid to sign Sanches.

Triple Swoop: Jose Mourinho gives blessing for Man United to complete three major signings

JOSE MOURINHO has given his blessing for Manchester United to complete a trio of signings.

According to The Telegraph, Mourinho has told friends he's confident of succeeding Louis van Gaal.

While German newspaper Bild claim he's already signed a three-year deal at Old Trafford.

Starsport understand the Portuguese tactician will be given £300m to transform his squad and could make his mark early with three high-profile signings.

United have been linked with Everton star John Stones, Benfica midfielder Renato Sanches and PSG talisman Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

And Mourinho has fully endorsed all three to strengthen the central spine of United's squad, the Telegraph claim.

Mourinho made several failed attempts to sign Stones and Sanches during his Chelsea tenure and would approve of their arrivals.

He also shares an excellent relationship with Ibrahimovic, who will leave PSG after four trophy-laden seasons in the French capital.

Starsport exclusively revealed United are willing to offer the Swede a two-year deal worth a whopping £250,000-per-week.

Manchester United Transfer News: William Carvalho, Joao Mario, Latest Rumours

Manchester United scouts reportedly watched William Carvalho and Joao Mario play for Sporting Lisbon in their 1-0 victory over Moreirense on Saturday.

According to the Sun's Andrew Richardson, the Red Devils have been eyeing central midfielder Carvalho "regularly" in recent years and are looking to make changes for next season.

Richardson added midfielder Mario has only emerged as a United target "in recent weeks."

Both could be decent additions for United, who look set for another busy summer following a poor 2015-16 campaign under manager Louis van Gaal.

Per Richardson, Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho, who is the favourite to replace Van Gaal in the summer, would potentially "welcome a raid" of Sporting.

Carvalho, 24, has long been regarded as one of the best young defensive midfielders in the world and has performed fairly consistently at a high level this season.

With Bastian Schweinsteiger and Michael Carrick getting on in years, United could do with added verve in the middle of the park, and Portugal international Carvalho could provide that.

He will not come cheap, though, as his release clause is reportedly set at £35 million, while Arsenal have also long been linked with him and could battle United for his signature, per Jeremy Wilson in the Telegraph.

Given his relative youth and potential, it would be worth United shelling out more then £30 million for Carvalho as he could be a key part of the Red Devils' squad for years to come.

Mario is also a player who could be a huge asset at United in the future. The 23-year-old has emerged as one of the best midfielders in Portugal this season.

Per FourFourTwo's Tom Kundert, he has contributed to 13 league goals for Sporting (five goals, eight assists) and shown "magnificent control, accurate distribution and faultless decision-making."

His maturity and intelligence mark him out as a top young talent while his work rate is very impressive—see some of his season highlights below:

Like Carvalho, he is a full Portugal international and could be a star at UEFA Euro 2016 this summer.

United could well try to sign him up before the tournament in France, as more suitors will undoubtedly emerge if he shines.

Man United Transfer News: Man City hijack, stunning double swoop, Ajax breakthrough

Manchester City have joined the race to sign Paris St-Germain star Marquinhos.

French television station TF1 claim incoming boss Pep Guardiola has made Marquinhos a top priority when he arrives at the Etihad.

The news will irk rivals Manchester United, who are reportedly prepared to pay £50m to sign the talented defender.

Red Devils representatives have travelled to watch Sporting Lisbon duo William Carvalho and Joao Mario in action.

The Sun claim scouts flew to Portugal to see Lisbon’s 1-0 win over Moreirense on Saturday evening.

Midfield enforcer Carvalho, 24, is a long-term target for United and may finally be ready to complete a Premier League switch.

Meanwhile Mario has been impressive this term, netting six times and providing 10 assists in 41 appearances.

United will battle Juventus for defender Kenny Tete, who has rejected a new contract proposal with Ajax.

Tete's contract expires in June 2017 and could be sold this summer to prevent him leaving for free next year, the Mirror claim.

Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool prepared to pay massive Dembele salary

Top Premier League clubs are readying massive offers for Fulham's Moussa Dembele.

According to The Sun, the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool are all keen on the 19-year-old striker and are prepared to pay him an enormously increased salary.

It is believed that the talented Frenchman earns around £1,000-a-week at Craven Cottage but could see that rise to a staggering £25,000-a-week if one of the aforementioned clubs manage to secure his signature.

Dembele has scored 17 goals for the Cottagers this season and has turned the heads of the Blues, Red Devils and Reds as well as Tottenham and Italian duo Juventus and Napoli.

Man United line up £40m bid for 21-year-old Brazil international

According to the Telegraph, Premier League duo Man United and Chelsea are ready to struggle for the signature of PSG versatile full-back Marquinhos in the summer as both clubs expressed an interest in signing the Brazil international, who is rated at £40m by the League 1 club.

It is believed that both clubs are willing to strengthen defensive abilities and Marquinhos could be a perfect signing for Premier League duo. But it’s also obvious that the Ligue 1 champions are incredibly reluctant to sell the 21-year-old – who turns 22 next month.

The same sources claim that French giants are aware the defender may be unsettled given he has had to play second fiddle to the partnership of his compatriots Thiago Silva and David Luiz, with the majority of his appearances this season coming at right-back.

PSG have not announced their position about the summer transfer move for the Brazilian, but it’s believed PSG would prefer a swap deal in order to bring a replacement into the Parc des Princes.

On the other side, for the Red Devils the defence is an area of major concern given they do not have much strength in depth of experience beyond their first-choice back four, with Phil Jones often suffers with injuries and Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett out of Louis van Gaal’s first-team plans at present.

Manchester United Transfer News: Latest on Memphis Depay, Renato Sanches Rumours

Manchester United are preparing to sell forward Memphis Depay in the summer, and bring Portugal international Renato Sanches to Old Trafford to strengthen their squad.

Simon Mullock of the Mirror reported Depay, who cost the Red Devils £25 million from PSV Eindhoven 12 months ago, is being touted to clubs across Europe by United as the north-west giants look to quickly move the player on.

Depay looked promising in his opening games for United this season, but the winger quickly fell out of favour as his performances stagnated.

The 22-year-old was a prolific goalscorer for PSV, leading them to the Dutch league title last season, but he has contributed only five goals in 2015-16 across all competitions for United, according to WhoScored.com.

Duncan Castles of the Sunday Times said United will turn their attentions to £47 million-rated teenager Renato Sanches from Benfica, but they will face stiff competition from Pep Guardiola's Manchester City, and both Real Madrid and Paris Saint Germain.

Guardiola recently said of Sanches, per Castles: "He is one of the best young players in Europe for his dynamism and personality."

Depay has not settled in English football, with his work rate and effectiveness compromised throughout the campaign.

Sanches would bring a renewed energy to United's core, and despite being a different type of player to Memphis, he would bring much-needed focus to the midfield, despite his tender years.

Depay has been a huge disappointment since his arrival, and manager Louis van Gaal has been unable to find the formula to integrate his talents.

New players often struggle in their opening year at Old Trafford, but it's a long way back for the Dutchman if he wants to be a first-team regular in the Premier League.
