Thumbs up Ryan Joseph Giggs

The only surprise about Ryan Giggs being named PFA Player's Player of the Year in April 2009 was that it had taken so long for him to win the prestigious award.

After all, he'd previously received countless other individual gongs - including the PFA Young Player award twice in his early career - not to mention more team honours than any other United player in the club's illustrious history.

Ryan is also the Reds' record appearance-maker; he surpassed Sir Bobby Charlton's 758 on the night he helped the Reds secure a third European Cup triumph - his second - in Moscow on 21 May 2008.

United's most decorated player might never have graced Old Trafford, however, had it not been for Sir Alex Ferguson’s intervention. Cardiff-born Giggs was attending Manchester City's School of Excellence in his early teens, but Sir Alex made a personal visit to his house on his 14th birthday and Ryan jumped at the chance to sign for his boyhood favourites.

Ryan turned professional at United in November 1990 and made his league debut in the old Division One against Everton at Old Trafford on 2 March 1991 as a substitute for Denis Irwin. His first league start in 1991/92 also proved a memorable occasion, as he also scored his first ever United goal that day (albeit via a huge deflection off Colin Hendry) in a 1-0 win over Manchester City.

Giggs' first senior trophy arrived in November 1991 as United beat Red Star Belgrade in the European Super Cup final - Ryan came on for Lee Martin. He picked up his second winners' medal five months later as the Reds beat Nottingham Forest in the League Cup final. The following season, 1992/93, saw Giggs and United win the inaugural Premier League title.

Ryan was an integral part of two Double-winning sides, in 1993/94 and 1995/96, before going one better in 1998/99 by adding the European Cup to the FA Cup and Premier League trophy. His contributions to the Treble-winning campaign included a superb solo goal to win the FA Cup semi-final replay against Arsenal at Villa Park, commonly regarded as one of United's greatest ever goals.

Ryan celebrated 10 years at Old Trafford with a testimonial match against Celtic in 2001/02. A year later he bagged his 100th career goal in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and became only the second-ever player to play 700 games for United when he helped the Reds to a dramatic 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield in March 2007. Two months later, he became a league title winner for the ninth time, beating the record of eight championship medals held by Liverpool legends Phil Neal and Alan Hansen.

In the interests of prolonging his club career at the highest level, Ryan retired from international football with Wales in June 2007 after 64 games and 12 goals. In October 2007, he extended his United contract to June 2009.

December 2007 brought two landmark feats - Ryan was awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his services to football and he scored his 100th league career goal in the 4-0 home win over Derby County.

Ryan crowned the epic 2007/08 season, his 18th in United's first team, by scoring the Reds' second goal in the last-day league win at Wigan and slotting home what proved to be the decisive penalty in the Champions League final shoot-out.

Giggs' career continued with a flourish during 2008/09 when he adopted a more central position in midfield or just off the main striker. He extended his contract by another year in February 2009, effective to the end of 2009/10. In that same month he became the only player to score in every Premier League season when he netted in United's 1-0 win at West Ham.

====================

Should Ryan Giggs have made more than £23m?

fourfourtwo.com

FourFourTwo’s latest Rich List reveals that Ryan Giggs may have amassed a fortune of £23m, but it's a surprisingly low figure for a man who holds the record number of appearances for Manchester United.

Giggs was one of the original golden generation of young United stars to break through at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson, becoming a regular in Fergie’s first team at a time when team-mate David Beckham was being shipped out on loan to Preston North End.

Now into his 18th season at the Theatre of Dreams he’s picked up 28 trophies, including 10 Premiership titles and two Champions League winners’ medals.

But although his career earnings of £23m might sound like a lot, at an average of £1.3m a year it falls far behind the £150,000-a-week currently being commanded by FIFA World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo.

Giggs, who recently gave his biggest hint yet that he could retire at the end of the season, is seventh in a list of wealthy Premier League stars, behind the likes of Sol Campbell (£28m), Robbie Fowler (£28m) and Michael Owen (£40m).

He is also £12m behind team-mate Wayne Rooney, who is 12 years younger than the former Wales captain.

Now 35, Giggs has been the face of Reebok, Citizen Watches and Givenchy but his earnings don’t come close to those of list-topper Beckham, worth £125m making him the richest British footballer.

Max Clifford, the PR expert who’s handled the careers of some of the country’s biggest celebrities, claims Giggs could have more than doubled his money.

“Ryan is a good looking guy with a nice personality," he said, "he could have made £50m easily – but I don’t think he wanted to. He’s always done everything his own way. He didn’t want the showbusiness lifestyle like David Beckham, he got his boot deal and a few sponsorship contracts but he never chased the limelight.

“David Beckham created an image for himself and then developed into a brand. There was a time when Giggs was on the front of every magazine but that was at the start of his career and he soon moved away from that sort of thing.”

Clifford claims the influence of Sir Alex Ferguson among other figures at Manchester United helped to keep the young generation of stars grounded.

“You look at the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes, who’ve been at United all their careers, there’s a world of difference between them and Beckham," he said.

“Maybe they could have earned considerably more but I bet they’ve had much more stress-free lives than Beckham.”

Cardiff University international public relation specialist Elliot Pill has worked with both Giggs and Beckham. He is not surprised at the massive gulf in their earnings, having seen their differing attitudes towards the media and life outside football.

“I’ve worked with both of them and they are such different people," he said. "It’s no surprise that Beckham went on to earn so much more. David always had the very best of everything but Ryan was less flamboyant and a bit more down to earth.

“From the start, Beckham was excellent at self promotion and when he got with Victoria his stock went through the roof.

“But Ryan was more of a private person; the only times he hit the headlines was early on in his career when he was with Dani Behr. But I think that was more down to her than him.”

Beckham’s mega-money moves from Manchester United to Real Madrid, then to LA Galaxy and most recently to AC Milan have helped push up his career earnings.

While moves away from United have sometimes been mooted for Giggs, he has always remained loyal to the club he joined as a 14-year-old boy.

With his time at the European champions seemingly set to come to an end in the next few years, Pill doesn’t believe he will be tempted by a move across the Atlantic.

“Despite being one of the best-ever Premiership players I don’t think he’s a big enough brand to make an impact like Beckham in America," he said.

“Ryan is not the sort of front-of-house personality they would want. He doesn’t go after the publicity and he is not as well known in the US as over here.

“I would think he will go into management or coaching because I know he’s been working hard to get his coaching badges over the last few years.”

Professor Tom Cannon, an expert in football business from Liverpool University, added: “I’m sure there’s probably a part of Ryan Giggs that wishes he could have become as global as David Beckham but he also knows it would come at a price.

“Ryan was encouraged from a very young age to stay out of the limelight by Alex Ferguson. He probably could have done some things differently and earned a bit more but saying that he’s not had a bad life at all – £25m is more than enough for anyone.

“Most of the players above him made their millions by transferring clubs but Giggs always stayed loyal to United.”

Denis Irwin bareng Lou Macari nih, bisa di posting disini kah?

================================================== ====

Legends praise Giggs

Old Trafford legends Denis Irwin and Lou Macari were united in praise of Ryan Giggs following the Reds' 2-0 win at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.

Giggs, making his 999th appearance in senior football (931 for United, 64 for Wales, four for Team GB), scored the game's second goal to seal three vital points in the race for the Barclays Premier League title.

Irwin and Macari, speaking on MUTV's Matchday Live programme, waxed lyrical about the Welshman following a performance that earned Giggs a nomination in ManUtd.com's Man of the Match poll.

"There have been times this season, last season and the season before when people were writing him off but he's a top professional," Lou Macari said. "He keeps bouncing back and doing what he's done at QPR. Did he look nearly 40? I don't think so. He flew about the pitch, he got on the ball, his passing was good.

"The biggest indicator as to how good he is: the manager keeps picking him. Sir Alex doesn't mess around here at Manchester United. He lets players go at times when supporters aren't sure why, but he knows things we don't know.

"It's the same for the people he keeps. If he keeps Giggs and Paul Scholes that's because he has a belief that they have something to offer. And they go out onto the pitch and prove the manager's right. To write Giggsy or Scholesy off is a silly thing to do. They can have a poor game, but that happens to the best of players, let alone players approaching 40 years of age."

Denis Irwin added: "He's dedicated, too. You should see him in training. And don't forget, he started as a winger, an out-and-out winger who ran up and down the touchline, scoring goals, creating goals. "He was in the centre of the park on Saturday and he got around and did his defensive duties well. Like Lou says, he's good enough to play. If he wasn't good enough for this club the manager wouldn't play him.

"Sir Alex trusts him, he knows it's going to be a tough game and yet he sticks him in the centre of the park and he scores a great goal. He's a fantastic player, he really is.

"To play 999 games is unbelievable. He had problems with his hamstrings in his 20s but then started doing yoga. That sorted it out. Obviously the manager's been careful with him over the last eight or nine years, but he's an incredible athlete. There's not an ounce of fat on him.

"He looks after himself, he trains as hard and intense as he plays on a Saturday. Young players can learn bundles off Giggsy and Scholesy through the way they train and the way they are in the dressing room. Ryan is a very big character in that dressing room - he's not quiet. He's a great professional and played fantastically well on Saturday."
