JONES: LET'S MAKE OLD TRAFFORD A FORTRESS

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has called for his side to make Old Trafford a fortress in the 2017/18 campaign.

The Reds were left frustrated at home on a number of occasions last season, as several teams Jose Mourinho’s side were expected to beat escaped the Theatre of Dreams with a point.

Ahead of United's Premier League opener against West Ham, Jones has urged his team-mates to put a run together at Old Trafford which will strike fear in the hearts of the visiting teams.

“It’s very important [to make Old Trafford a fortress],” Jones told MUTV. “We’ve got to make sure that teams coming to Old Trafford this season know that they’re in for a tough game and know that they’re going to be under the cosh for a lot of the game.

“I think we got that back last year. I think teams definitely came to Old Trafford and feared us a lot more than in recent years, and we need to keep that momentum going.

“We’ve got a great squad now, with youth and experience, and hopefully that combination will serve us well.”

The United centre-back is aware that his former team-mate Javier Hernandez could make his first appearance at Old Trafford since leaving the club two years ago, this time playing for the away team as one of West Ham's new signings.

The striker known as Chicharito served the Reds between 2010 and 2015, and Jones believes the United faithful will give the Mexican a warm welcome should he feature on Sunday.

“I think he’ll get a great reception, he was very well liked here, not just as a player but as a professional off the pitch,” the Reds defender continued. “He was a good player and he’ll be a tough opponent, but we’ve got to make sure we do our things right and perform as well as we can do.”

Jones was also keen to pay homage to the United fans all over the world who support the club, as well as those who will be attending the match on Sunday.

“The support around the world is massively appreciated – we feel it every game,” he added. “Whether you’re there or you’re not there and cheering us on through the TV – we feel that.

“When the results don’t go so well, we feel the pain as much as they do, but that’s what we’re about and we stick together through the tough times and the good times. Hopefully we’ll have more good times than bad times this season.”

Phil Jones dominant yet again as Manchester United defender puts himself in England starting contention with another complete performance

* Manchester United kept a third straight Premier League clean sheet on Saturday
* United beat Leicester 2-0 with goals by Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini
* But it was central defender Phil Jones who really impressed next to Eric Bailly
* Jones communicated well, played with aggression and was calm in possession
* Defender Jones was recently called up to Gareth Southgate's England squad

Victor Lindelof briefly brought the leafy lane leading up to Manchester United's training base to a halt on Friday afternoon.

Supporters were waiting at the gates ready to pounce for autographs from their heroes as Lindelof attempted to snake his way home.

Dutifully, the £31million signing stopped his black Mercedes and obliged for longer than he might have done.

Phil Jones put on a dominant display as Manchester United beat Leicester City 2-0 on Saturday. He kept Jamie Vardy quiet as United recorded a third straight Premier League clean sheet

Those who crowded his wheels left Carrington with selfies and scribbles of a man who is yet to play in the Premier League. Someone who has only made one matchday squad, in fact.

Lindelof was supposed to be the central defensive answer - he surely will still be long term - but Jose Mourinho has turned to a man derided for solidity in the interim instead. A very shrewd move indeed.

This is quite the renaissance for Phil Jones, one that has been ongoing for months. The niggling injuries have disappeared. Those who regularly poke fun at him have quietened. United have not conceded a Premier League goal so far.

Three clean sheets for Jones and Eric Bailly alongside him suggest Mourinho has got this spot on. It has left Chris Smalling kicking his heels too, but Jones is deserving of the chance.

So often last season, with United insipid, Jones would be the one coming out with credit to his name and the 25-year-old has carried on from where he left off.

That was in evidence on Saturday, with Jamie Vardy - who has started this term in devilish mood - finding it tough to get any change out of Jones.

The 25-year-old also handled Riyad Mahrez well, displaying composure and intelligence. Jones has formed a fine partnership with Eric Bailly at the heart of the Red Devils backline

The amount of times Vardy threatened to run in behind could be counted on one hand. A complete contrast to at Arsenal, where Leicester lost 4-3 a fortnight prior.

The way Jones plays the game - blood, thunder and all the rest - means there are those who say he is too helter-skelter to really prove a success at the genuine top level. There are moments that are evidence of that, as he dived in and was sent the wrong way by Riyad Mahrez when this remained goalless.

Yet so too is the way he forced Mahrez to run a ball out when dancing in the box just minutes later. Jones is fearless and Mourinho clearly sees something in him. His reaction to the UEFA doping official who deprived him of celebrating the Europa League final win will have endeared him to the manager.

His reading of the game is exemplary, stepping out of the back four to intercept dangerous situations, and is not given the praise it warrants. Quick feet, too. Maybe detractors cannot see beyond the amusing faces he pulls when stretching every sinew to defend for his team. A leader, a good communicator, a fierce competitor.

Calm on the ball, he strides out with the sort of confidence you would expect from an individual who spent his formative years bossing midfields at Blackburn's academy in Brockhall village.

Little wonder Gareth Southgate has again called him up to the England squad. Looking at the options, including Gary Cahill and John Stones, there is an argument for him starting in Malta on Friday night. It'd be just his second cap since November 2015 but Jones is the form England central defender right now.

Semoga musim ini kondisi Jones lebih fit dibanding musim sebelumnya

Jones yang Rentan Cedera
Femi Diah - detikSport

Valletta - Phil Jones rentan cedera. Dia bertekad untuk terus memberikan pembuktian kalau dia layak dipercaya Jose Mourinho maupun Timnas.

Jones memang menjadi salah satu pemain penting di lini belakang Manchester United. Bersama Erick Bailly, Jones membuat gawang MU masih clean sheet dalam tiga laga perdana di Premier League.

Namun, Jones ternyata dibekap cedera saat MU menghadapi Leicester City akhir pekan lalu. Cedera itu bukan cedera pertama Jones. Dia memang termasuk pemain yang rentan dibekap cedera sehingga harus berulang kali masuk ruang perawatan.

"Saya tahu orang-orang terus membicarakannya (soal cedera).

Bahkan, dia diragukan tampil menjelang laga The Three Lons menghadapi Malta pada kualifikasi Piala Dunia, Sabtu (2/8/2017) dini hari WIB.

JONES: HOW I'VE IMPROVED MY GAME

Phil Jones says testing himself against Manchester United's wealth of attacking talent day in and day out has helped him improve his game.

United’s flair going forward has been on show for all to see this season, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in fantastic form from the off.

That trio have six Premier League goals between them this term, while Paul Pogba has added a further two, so spare a thought for the defenders – like Jones – who have to deal with them in training on a regular basis.

However, the 25-year-old centre-back has insisted that he enjoys the challenge of facing world-class players in training, and he feels playing against them has helped him to perform better in match situations.

“As a defender, you want to play against the best strikers in the world,” Jones told us recently. “You want to test yourself and prove to people that you’re good enough to do that.

“Playing against these players in training every day makes me a better player. It gives me a better understanding of how to deal with these types of players when they’re on the opposing team.”

The England international put in another solid performance for his country in their 2-1 win against Slovakia on Monday night, leaving the Three Lions on the brink of qualification for the World Cup.

Team-mate Rashford also shone at Wembley as he provided the assist for Eric Dier's equaliser, before netting a brilliant winner just before the hour-mark. And Jones believes only great things lie ahead for the young striker.

“He’s a great lad off the pitch and, on it, he’s a special talent,” Jones added. “He’s already special but he’ll be a world-beater one day, he’s that good.

“He’s so quick, sharp, technically gifted, two-footed and a nightmare for defenders. You’ve seen it this season already, he’s given defenders nightmares. He’s an Academy product and players from the youth system have done great over the last few years. He’s a special player and we’re lucky to have him.”

One of the features of United’s impressive early season form has been Jones and Eric Bailly’s uncompromising partnership in the heart of the defence, which has seen Jose Mourinho’s side keep three clean sheets in all three league games so far.

Speaking about his defensive partner, Jones declared: “He's adapted really well. He’s a great lad in the dressing room, he’s a talented footballer, he’s strong and he’s quick.

“He had a good first season and hopefully he can do even better this season. He’s a funny guy and the lads bounce off him, so we’re happy to have him here.”

Jones joined United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011 as a 19-year-old, and, since then, has blossomed from a young talent into one of the top defenders in the league.

The centre-back was keen to emphasise that there have been many figures who have helped his development since he became a Red, past and present.

“I’ve played with so many good players. In my position, the likes of Rio [Ferdinand] and Nemanja [Vidic],” he said. “Giggsy [Ryan Giggs] was a great help for me when he was at the club too.

“And, in terms of managers, I’ve had a lot of help, but that’s United in a nutshell. It’s not just one player or one manager, everyone chips in and that’s the way it should be. That’s a team, and that’s what we are.

"I'm learning a lot off our current manager. We know exactly what he expects of us and he knows the players inside and out. We're all enjoying it."

JONES HAS MESSAGE FOR UNITED SUPPORTERS

Phil Jones had a message for the Manchester United supporters following the 1-0 victory over Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

The defender was excellent on his return from injury, alongside fellow England international Chris Smalling, and helped keep a 10th clean sheet of the season. Acknowledging the fans' reaction to the derby-day defeat by turning out on a freezing evening to back the Reds in midweek, Jones appreciates it has been a hard few days for the club's followers.

"It was difficult after the derby defeat," he told MUTV. "It was so disappointing in many ways because of the magnitude of the game and we wanted to do more.

"We wanted to win the game but, unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. So we wanted to come out and show a bit of fire and a bit of courage, the players getting on the ball and trying to do something. It wasn’t pretty at times, we had to dig deep and grind it out.

"But the most important thing was to get the three points and get back on track. I would like to say 'thank you' to the fans because I think it was difficult for them on Sunday in the derby defeat. They stuck by us again when times are hard, they were singing, they were pushing for us and we need that for the whole season."

Jones was injured on international duty but is ready for the upcoming challenges as United face five more games this month alone.

"It was a strange injury I had," he said. "But it is nice to be back. I feel good and feel fit. I'm pleased with the three points."

Manchester United defender Phil Jones happy to help his side bounce back from Man City defeat: 'It wasn't pretty at times but we had to dig deep'

* Phil Jones returned from injury following his lay-off with a thigh injury
* The 25-year-old was an unused substitute for United's defeat by City
* United kept a cleansheet on Jones' return as the Red Devils beat Bournemouth

Phil Jones believes Manchester United showed fight and courage to get back on track after being rocked by the 'magnitude' of their derby defeat.

Jose Mourinho's men saw their club record-equalling 40-match unbeaten home run come to an end on Sunday as runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City secured a 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

The result enabled Pep Guardiola's swashbuckling side to open up an 11-point lead over second-placed United, who got back to winning ways on Wednesday as Romelu Lukaku secured a hard-fought 1-0 win against Bournemouth

Mourinho's Red Devils were far from their best but Jones was pleased by both the character and outcome in the wake of the tense loss to bitter rivals City.

'It was always going to be difficult off the back of the derby defeat,' the United defender said.

'(We were) so disappointed in many ways because of the magnitude of the (derby) game and we wanted to do more.

'We wanted to win the game and unfortunately it wasn't to be, so it was important that we came out, showed a bit of fight and a bit of courage, (with) players getting on the ball and trying to do something.

'It wasn't pretty at times. We had to dig deep and grind it out, but the most important thing was to get three points and get back on track.

'I'd just like to say to thank you to the fans as well because I think it was difficult for them on Sunday in the derby defeat.

'They stuck by us again. When times are hard, they're singing, they're chanting for us and we'll need that going on in the season.'

Man United defender Phil Jones was happy with his side's response to their defeat by City. Jones returned to action after a lengthy layoff with a thigh injury picked up on England duty

It is that kind of backing that feels crucial right now to someone like summer signing Lukaku.

The 24-year-old's first-half header was just his third goal in his last 15 appearances for United, with the Belgium striker barely celebrating what proved to be the decisive moment.

'He did well, rose above his man and that's what he does best,' Jones told MUTV.

'He's going through a patch where he's not scoring goals, but he's doing other things for us in the match. I am pleased for him tonight. Hopefully he can kick on and score some more goals now.'

Jones, too, hopes to move on after ending his five-week absence from the United line-up, having been laid low by injury since going away with England.

'It was a strange, strange little injury I had but it is nice to be back,' he said.

'I feel good, I feel fit and just pleased with the three points, to be fair.'

Jones' return is a welcome boost to a defence that could be without Eric Bailly for a sustained period with an ankle complaint that United manager Mourinho has warned looks 'serious'.

The Ivory Coast international looks set to be absent well beyond the trip to West Brom on Sunday, when Bournemouth host Liverpool buoyed by a promising display at Old Trafford.

'We're disappointed because we've been beaten, but I'm really pleased with the performance,' Cherries boss Eddie Howe said.

'I thought we were very good today and were very disciplined out of possession.

'We were also very good with the ball and created numerous chances.'

Phil Jones warns rivals Manchester City that United can still catch them in the Premier League title race despite hefty 12-point gap: 'You never know'

* Premier League leaders Manchester City are 12 points clear of chasers United
* City lost their first League match of the season on Sunday — 4-3 at Liverpool
* United defender Phil Jones is not ready to admit defeat in this season's title race
* City won the 2012 title after being eight points behind United in April that year
* Jones is using that season as inspiration: 'It happened in 2012 to us so why not?'

Phil Jones has warned Manchester City they can still be overhauled in the Premier League title race, just as Manchester United were six years ago.

City's advantage at the Premier League summit is a sizeable 12 points, though their first top-flight loss of the season to Liverpool on Sunday has at least given the chasing pack a modicum of hope.

United are at the head of that group of challengers having beaten Stoke 3-0 and Jones still remembers when they were in a position as comfortable as City's current one only to eventually miss out on the crown by virtue of their goal difference.

In ex-Blackburn defender Jones' first season at Old Trafford, Sir Alex Ferguson's men were eight points ahead of City in April with six games to go only to see the title end up across town when Sergio Aguero scored late on against QPR.

Having gone through that experience, Jones knows nothing is yet set in stone as far as this year's title race goes.

'Football's football, never say never,' he said.

Man United star Phil Jones has warned City that the Premier League title race is not yet over. City won the 2012 title on the final day after being eight points behind United in April that year. Centre back Jones believes United's collapse six years ago proves you should 'never say never'

'I remember in my first season we were eight points clear, absolutely cruising, (everyone thought there was) no way we'd let the lead slip, and we lost it on the final day.

'Football's football. People can say what they want but we'll continue to be positive and push forward. You never know. It happened in 2012 to us so why not?'

United's title bid would receive a boost should they lure Alexis Sanchez to Old Trafford from Arsenal this month.

Manager Jose Mourinho has said there is 'a chance' for United to land Sanchez this month, with Manchester City understood to have walked away from a deal due to the cost and Antonio Conte having downplayed any possible interest from Chelsea.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, omitted from the United squad against Stoke, could hold the key to that deal after the Armenian's agent Mino Raiola claimed to The Times a Sanchez switch to United was dependant on his client heading in the opposite direction.

Jones, who called Sanchez 'a good player', insists United's current squad are paying no heed to a transfer rumour mill they cannot affect.

'We just go about what we do best,' he added.

'Keep playing, it's not up to us, it's not down to us. We know just as much as you guys.

'If someone new comes in the door then obviously it's a positive move for United but it's not up to us, we just do the business on the pitch.

'He (Sanchez) is a good player. But it doesn't meant to say he's going to come to United. We'll have to see.'
