Arsène Wenger hails FA Cup victory as Arsenal's most important trophy

Arsène Wenger, right, lifts the FA Cup watched by Lukas Podolski, Mikel Arteta and Thomas Vermaelen after the win over Hull City at Wembley.

Arsène Wenger described Arsenal's 3-2 victory over Hull City in the FA Cup final as a "big moment of happiness", and even went as far as to suggest that the club's first major piece of silverware in nine years was the most important in his time at the club.

Arsenal had to show all their fighting qualities on a sapping day at Wembley, after finding themselves 2-0 down*inside eight first-half minutes, thanks to goals from James Chester and Curtis Davies. Wenger admitted feeling "shock" at the blistering start made by Steve Bruce's side and fearful that his "nervous" players would not overcome the setback.

However, Santi Cazorla's rasping free-kick after 17 minutes got them back into the contest before a much improved second-half display resulted in Laurent Koscielny equalising for Arsenal after 71 minutes, and Aaron Ramsey securing the winner in extra time.

"I feel relief and happiness because we were under severe pressure to win today and didn't start well," said Wenger. "But, in the end, it finished well, so this is a big moment of happiness for us.

"We waited a long time for this and the happiness is linked sometimes with the suffering, and the time that you have to wait."

Branded a "specialist in failure" by José Mourinho earlier in the season, Wenger now joins Sir Alex Ferguson in having won the FA Cup five times as a manager. Yet, for him, this triumph has a resonance beyond that because it meant the club finally followed up on their success in the final of 2005's FA Cup competition, when Arsenal beat Manchester United 5-4 on penalties to claim the trophy. That was the seventh major honour of Wenger's reign, a spell that, at that stage, also included two Doubles.

"This was more important than all the others," said the Frenchman. "We have twice won the double, but were not under pressure then like we were today.

"This is an important moment in the life of this team; to lose today would have been a major setback, but winning gives us a good platform to come back stronger next year."

There had been speculation before Saturday's match that Wenger would not be at the club next season, given that his contract with Arsenal has expired. Yet the manager has insisted he always planned to sign a fresh deal and all but confirmed that after victory here, which comes on the back of Arsenal's fourth-place finish in the Premier League, and qualification for the play-off stages of the Champions League.

"That [signing a new contract] normally should happen and we are in very normal circumstances now," Wenger said. "It was never a question of leaving, it was a question of doing the right thing for this squad and you have to accept, in England, that the Premier League is very tough. It is difficult [to beat the top clubs] but we will again try."

Bruce suggested afterwards that the decisions that led to Arsenal's first two goals were mistakes on the part of the referee, Lee Probert. Replays showed that the corner kick from which Koscielny equalised after 71 minutes should have been awarded as a Hull goal-kick because striker Yaya Sanogo got the final touch to Oliver Giroud's cross.

Arsenal, however, arguably deserved to get back into this contest given their increased share of possession and territory after the break, with Ramsey's first-time, low strike after 109 minutes just reward for another excellent display by the Welsh midfielder.

"He was not in the [PFA] team of the year or in the football writers' team of the year, and he deserved to be," said Wenger. "He certainly popped up at the right moment again today."

Arsenal 3-2 Hull City: how the FA Cup final players rated

Aaron Ramsey was Arsenal's standout player while Alex Bruce put in tremendous display at heart of Hull's defence

ARSENAL

LUKASZ FABIANSKI 6/10
Retained his FA Cup place and, while he could have shown better reactions for Hull's second goal, did not do much wrong, bar rushing from his line late on and giving Aluko sight of an empty net.

BACARY SAGNA 7/10
Played an important role in Arsenal's equaliser, winning the aerial challenge from which Koscielny scored, and generally tried to drive his side on in sapping conditions.

PER MERTESACKER 5/10
The "Big Friendly German" showed next-to-no aerial prowess in trying to stop the two Hull crosses that led to the early goals. From then onwards, looked solid until his late, nearly costly, slip.

LAURENT KOSCIELNY 7/10
Started as badly as his central-defensive partner but, credit to the Frenchman, it was thanks to his quick reactions that Arsenal got their second half equaliser.

KIERAN GIBBS 5/10
The full-back was guilty of ballooning a shot over the crossbar when it looked easier to score late on when he was set up by Sanogo but otherwise looked secure.

AARON RAMSEY 8/10
The midfielder was easily turned by Quinn for Hull's second goal but after that worked tirelessly to get his side back into this match, and scored the winner in extra time.

MIKEL ARTETA 6/10
Unable to stamp his mark on this game initially due to the positive start made by the men in black and amber, the Spaniard became a growing presence as the opposition players around him tired.

SANTI CAZORLA 7/10
It was from the Spaniard's rasping free-kick that Arsenal scored their first goal and he worked harder than anyone in red to retrieve what initially looked a doomed situation for the London club.

MESUT ÖZIL 5/10
Arsenal's record signing cut a frustrated figure for large parts, unable to impose himself as opposition players continuously snapped at his ankles. Marginally improved as the game went on.

LUKAS PODOLSKI 5/10
An ineffective display by the German, who, stationed on the left of Arsenal's three-man deep-lying attack, offered next to nothing going forward. No surprise to see him replaced by Sanogo.

OLIVIER GIROUD 7/10
A poor display until the 72nd minute when he earned, incorrectly as replays showed, the corner from which Arsenal equalised. Unlucky to see his diving header early in extra time hit the bar.

SUBSTITUTES: Yaya Sanogo 7/10 (for Podolski, 61); Tomas Rosicky n/a (for Cazorla, 105); Jack Wilshere n/a (for Özil, 105)

Subs not used Szczesny, Vermaelen, Monreal, Flamini

HULL CITY

ALLAN McGREGOR 6/10
The Scot was at fault for Arsenal's first goal, leading with his wrong hand in an attempt to stop Cazorla's free-kick, but he redeemed himself with an excellent reaction stop to Giroud's snap shot late on.

AHMED ELMOHAMADY 7/10
Positioned on the right of Hull's rearguard, the 26-year-old put in a disciplined display, rarely caught out of position and forever tracking back. Tired as the match went on although kept pressing forward

JAMES CHESTER 7/10
Was an injury doubt before kick-off and made an instant impact, turning in Huddlestone's shot to give Hull an early lead. Continued to do all he could to keep Arsenal at bay

ALEX BRUCE 8/10
The manager's son put in a tremendous display at the centre of Hull's three-man defence, blocking, heading and, as he showed when confronted by Giroud in the second-half, intercepting practically everything that came his way

CURTIS DAVIES 8/10
The captain reacted quickly at the far post to double Hull's early lead and soon after blocked shots from Podolski and Ramsey in quick succession. Remained a strong presence for his side

LIAM ROSENIOR 6/10
Like Elmohamady on the opposite side, put in a disciplined performance that naturally weakened through tiredness. No surprise to see him substituted in extra-time

JAKE LIVERMORE 6/10
Part of a tigerish Tigers midfield that set the tone for Hull's jaw-dropping start. Became less notable as Arsenal got themselves back into the contest

TOM HUDDLESTONE 7/10
Booked on the hour for a reckless lunge on Cazorla but generally delivered a composed display from the heart of Hull's midfield, especially with his passing

DAVID MEYLER 7/10
The 24-year-old's task was to disrupt Arsenal's rhythm and he showed just how keen he was to do that with a needless second-half swipe on Koscielny. But overall he impressed

STEPHEN QUINN 7/10
It was from the Irishman's corner and then from his cross that Hull took an early 2-0 lead. As well as being an attacking threat, the Irishman also carried out defensive duties

MATTY FRYATT 5/10
In the absence of the cup-tied Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic, it was left to the 28-year-old to lead Hull's front line. Worked hard and ran even harder but made little impact

SUBSTITUTES: McShane 5/10 (for Bruce 67), Aluko 5/10 (for Quinn 74): Boyd 6/10 (for Rosenior 102)

Subs not used Figueroa, Koren, Sagbo, Harper
