UNITED WOMEN 3 CHARLTON WOMEN 0

Manchester United Women returned to winning ways - and maintained their 100 per cent league clean sheet record - with a 3-0 victory against Charlton Athletic at Leigh Sports Village, where Katie Zelem, Jess Sigsworth and Lizzie Arnot provided the goals.

United were without the recently named Women’s Championship Player of the Month, Lauren James, who is away on international duty, but dominated from start to finish and could have been ahead after just three minutes. Amy Turner, getting on the end of Zelem’s teasing corner, headed over from close range.

The Reds' possession and pressure on Charlton was rewarded after 15 minutes though. Alex Greenwood found Zelem on the edge of the area and the number 10’s excellent turn gave her room to pick her spot and fire a precise left-footed effort past the visitors' goalkeeper, Katie Startup.

Casey Stoney’s side continued to dominate and seemed to have scored the so-far elusive second goal when Kirsty Hanson’s instinctive improvisation found the back of the net. The 24-year-old brilliantly backheeled an effort in from Greenwood’s cross, but the flag was up for offside.

Charlton’s attacking efforts were limited by an excellent United defence, but it could easily have been level at the break. Gemma Bryan, feeding on scraps for the majority of the half, had a rare opportunity for Athletic after getting the better of an otherwise resolute Turner. Her cross found Liz Ejupi whose header rebounded off the crossbar and was eventually gathered by Reds goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain.

The second half started much the same as the first, with United pushing forward and looking to be more clinical.

Sigsworth applied a ‘third-time-lucky’ finish to a passage of play 10 minutes into the second half that saw the Reds hit the crossbar twice. Mollie Green’s cross found Lizzie Arnot who headed an effort onto the bar, as did Sigsworth from the loose ball, but the rebound from the forward’s header fell kindly for her to fire in a volley from the follow-up to double the lead.

Set-pieces and corners were a constant threat and Turner could have had a hat-trick on another day. The centre-back headed a second opportunity over before having her third effort of the day cleared off the line to keep her waiting for her first United goal.

Arnot wrapped up the three points soon after with a tap-in, when a shot from Ella Toone - on for Aimee Palmer - was saved but only pushed out into her path.

Another clean sheet, a good performance and three points - the combination everyone was looking for after the frustration of the recent draw with Durham.

UNITED WOMEN BEAT LEAGUE LEADERS TOTTENHAM

Manchester United Women put four past league leaders Tottenham Hotspur Ladies at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday afternoon to maintain the unbeaten league record in style.

Lauren James starred on her return from international duty by scoring one and assisting another for Jess Sigsworth, whose brace takes her season tally to eight.

Charlie Devlin scored her first goal for the club in the second half, before Angela Addison became the first player to score past United and Siobhan Chamberlain in the league with a late consolation strike that made it 4-1.

The visitors arrived with a perfect record in the league themselves (played six, won six) but United soon set about ending that.

James gave the Reds the lead after ten minutes, netting the first effort on Tottenham’s goal following excellent work from Sigsworth. The forward turned brilliantly in her own half before her driving run opened up space for James on the edge of the area. The 17-year-old’s deft footwork took her past two players and allowed her to pick her spot past Spurs goalkeeper, Chloe Morgan.

James returned the favour minutes later, turning provider for top-scorer Sigsworth to tap in her low cross from the left.

Passages of play swept from end to end in the first half, though Tottenham struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities to test Siobhan Chamberlain.

Relentless in applying pressure and clinical in their finishing, United had a third goal to celebrate before the break. Leah Galton - on for Kirsty Hanson just after the half hour mark - made an immediate impact, winning a freekick in a dangerous position on the left. Katie Zelem’s pinpoint delivery found Sigsworth at the back post to nod in her second of the game - a goal that will please manager Casey Stoney, who has set her side the challenge of scoring from a set-piece.

Alex Greenwood nearly added a second set-piece goal moments later, when her free-kick rattled off the post. It fell kindly for Amy Turner but the centre-back fired over meaning it remained three rather than four-nil at the break.

The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with the Reds applying pressure from the outset and enjoying sustained periods of possession.

Spurs, tenacious in their tackling, were limited to half chances throughout and looked to Angela Addison whenever possible to cause problems on the counter.

United nearly had a fourth through unconventional means; an indirect free-kick given after a pass-back was set up for Greenwood, but the captain’s fierce effort was deflected behind for a corner.

Constant pressure finally paid off for the Reds; Toone and Green were denied from long range and Galton had an effort cleared off the line, before Charlie Devlin - on for James - scored her first goal for the club.

United’s impressive clean-sheet record came to an end though; Addison became the first player to score past United and Chamberlain in the league, heading in from a corner in the 82nd minute.

The 4-1 win means United go in to the international break still unbeaten, with only one goal conceded in six matches and now just two points behind Tottenham with a game in hand.

MATCH DETAILS
United Women: Chamberlain; Harris, A. Turner, M. Turner, Greenwood; Palmer (Green 45), Zelem, Toone; Hanson (Galton 32), Sigsworth, James (Devlin 71)
Substitutes not used: Bentley, Smith, Hartley, Arnot
Scorers: James, Sigsworth, Devlin

POST-MATCH REACTION
Jess Sigsworth: “It was important to get the win and close the gap against Tottenham. As a no. 9, I’m always aiming for the golden boot so it was good to get two goals today but the most important thing is the team getting the win. It doesn’t matter who scores as long as that happens.”

NEXT HOME MATCH
After travelling to Crystal Palace in a fortnight's time on Sunday 18 November, United Women’s next home game will be against Millwall Lionesses, at 12:00 GMT on Sunday 25 November. Match tickets for Leigh Sports Village will again be on sale via www.manutd.com/womenstickets.

Default Re: Manchester United Women's Team

CRYSTAL PALACE LADIES 0 UNITED WOMEN 5

Manchester United Women's impressive, unbeaten start to the league campaign continued in style on Sunday afternoon with a convincing 5-0 away win over Crystal Palace Ladies at Hayes Lane, Bromley.

An early strike from Lizzie Arnot was all that separated the teams at half-time but further goals from Mollie Green (2), Alex Greenwood and Arnot again swept the Eagles aside in the second period.

With United threatening on both flanks from the off, it was the wingers who combined to give the visitors the lead after 17 minutes. Katie Zelem, so often the one to kick-start the Reds' attacks, did so with a threatening through-ball that tempted Crystal Palace goalkeeper, Shanell Salgado, to come off her line. Kirsty Hanson got there before the onrushing Salgado and did brilliantly to turn, get her head up and pick out Arnot in the box. The Scot picked her spot, slotting in a composed one-touch finish.

A fiercely competitive first 45 minutes produced few other clear-cut chances for either side, although Martha Harris, looking for her first United goal, had a shot blocked after good play between her and Arnot down the right.

Hanson also threatened Palace's goal with a long-range shot, but Ella Toone had the best opportunity to double the lead just after the half-hour mark. A brilliant cross by Green fell kindly to Toone who fired just wide from six yards out. Though United went into the break leading 1-0, there will have been plenty for head coach Casey Stoney to ponder.

Top scorer Jess Sigsworth replaced Toone at half-time and it didn’t take long for the no. 9 to get involved in the action, putting in a teasing cross that just evaded Arnot.

Arnot did get her second goal before long though, applying the final touch on Greenwood’s brilliant low cross that caused chaos in the Palace box. A scramble ensued but it was Arnot who claimed it.

Play opened up at that point and just four minutes later Green scored the best goal of the game. A short corner routine was executed to perfection, with Greenwood feeding Green, who touched the ball past her marker and swept in a beautiful left-footed curler.

Lauren James replaced Devlin with 17 minutes to go and within two minutes won a penalty, driving at the Palace back-line and drawing the foul. Greenwood, playing at left-wing in the second half, stepped up to take it and buried it to notch her first goal for the club.

Green wrapped up the scoring at 5-0, when firing in her second strike of the afternoon from a Kirsty Smith through-ball.

It was an impressive display overall, with the flurry of goals and a welcome return to keeping a clean sheet, and the result means United keep up the pressure on league leaders Tottenham with a game in hand.

REPORT: UNITED WOMEN 8 MILLWALL LIONESSES 0

A Mollie Green hat-trick helped Manchester United Women surge to the top of the English Women’s Championship after a thumping 8-0 victory over winless Millwall Lionesses at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday lunchtime.

The game was as good as over at half-time thanks to strikes from Lauren James, two from Mollie Green and a wonderful free-kick from Katie Zelem. Green grabbed her hat-trick four minutes into the second half, before substitute Ella Toone got in on the act.

Top scorer Jess Sigsworth grabbed the seventh, before captain Alex Greenwood put the icing on the cake with an eighth from the penalty spot, as Casey Stoney’s side clinically leapfrogged leaders Tottenham Hotspur Ladies at the top of the table and extended their unbeaten start to the season in the process.

United came into this one full of confidence, having scored 32 league goals in just eight league games, and it didn’t take long for the Reds to hit their stride. Inside three minutes, Lizzie Arnot’s cross was met by Jess Sigsworth, but her effort was tipped over by the Millwall Lionesses’s goalkeeper – who was going to be in for a busy afternoon.

Captain Alex Greenwood then had a shot blocked, before, on 12 minutes, Arnot’s cute clipped ball in behind found fellow winger Kirsty Hanson, only for her first-time effort to clatter the woodwork.

United didn’t have to wait too much longer for the decisive breakthrough, mind. Four minutes later, Hanson again found space behind the Millwall defence and pulled the ball back for the lurking James, who found the far corner from 12 yards.

Arnot, who was looking her spritely, confident self, was involved again on 30 minutes, when she headed Hanson’s cross wide, before the Reds doubled their lead two minutes later. Greenwood’s pinpoint cross from the left found Green, whose first-time volley flew past Chloe Sansom in the Millwall goal.

Stoney’s women smelt blood, and put the game to bed before the break via an inch-perfect Zelem free-kick.

By this stage, the Reds were rampant, and two minutes later, Green grabbed her second (and seventh of the season), cutting in from the left and curling an exquisite 25-yard effort into the far corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

If Millwall thought the Reds would take their foot off the gas in the second period, they were sorely mistaken. Just four minutes after the interval, Green grabbed her hat-trick, latching onto Greenwood’s cut-back and tucking the ball low into the corner.

Substitute Toone got in on the act on 58 minutes, and it was the move of the game. Great interplay with Kirsty Smith allowed the Reds' no.7 the opportunity to curl a peach of a shot into the far corner from the edge of the box.

Zelem wanted a second, but her 20-yard effort was well saved by Sansom, before Green went close to adding a fourth to her own personal tally, volleying just over.

It was time for Jess Sigsworth to get her seemingly obligatory goal, and she duly obliged, drilling in a low right-footed effort.

Arnot won a penalty on 78 minutes and Greenwood clinically converted, low into the corner, to make it eight – and there were still over 10 minutes to go.

Thankfully for Millwall, the damage ended there. But another dominant win for Stoney's women continues their barnstorming maiden campaign, as the chasing pack below look on ominously.

MATCH DETAILS

United Women: Chamberlain (Bentley 59); Smith, A. Turner (Palmer 72), M. Turner, Greenwood (c); Zelem, Green, James; Hanson (Toone 53), Arnot, Sigsworth.

Subs not used: Roberts, Hartley, Devlin, Galton.

Scorers: James 16, Green 32, 38, 49, Zelem 36, Toone 58, Sigsworth 71, Greenwood 79.

LEWES WOMEN 0 UNITED WOMEN 2

Manchester United Women racked up a fifth consecutive win on Sunday afternoon, making light work of a long away trip to East Sussex to beat Lewes Women with two second-half goals.

Not even a heavy pitch at The Dripping Pan ground, affected by adverse weather and the staging of a men's fixture 24 hours earlier, could prevent Casey Stoney's side creating numerous chances.

Katie Zelem forced the first notable parry by Lewes goalkeeper Faye Baker in the 14th minute, after some positive link-up play between United captain Alex Greenwood and Mollie Green on the right. Millie Turner was unfortunate not to convert the rebound, instead striking the outside of the left-hand post from close range.

Baker also made some fine stops following two Zelem corners, to keep out a shot from Greenwood and then to tip the ball over the bar when the next set piece threatened to go directly in.

Zelem also had a free-kick saved, shortly after Lizzie Arnot became the second United player to hit the post in an action-packed first half.

Lewes were under almost constant pressure throughout the opening 45 minutes but they almost snatched an unlikely breakthrough just before half-time when Georgia Robert forced a good save from the Reds' experienced goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain and a follow-up was cleared off the line.

Stoney made two changes for the restart as her side sought a richly deserved lead; Aimee Palmer was replaced in midfield by Charlie Devlin, while Leah Galton came on for Arnot in attack.

It took only a further six minutes of play for United to find a way past Baker, with Greenwood threading a pass down the left to Jess Sigsworth. The no.9 then cut inside before squaring the ball to Green in the area for an emphatic first-time finish.

The Reds' two half-time substitutes were heavily involved in the chase for a second goal, with Galton and Devlin both helping to tee up Sigsworth for attempts that were thwarted by the busy Baker.

Sigsworth had left the field, making way for third sub Lauren James, by the time United actually doubled the advantage in the 80th minute.

Devlin played her part, winning the penalty that Greenwood stepped up to take. Although the visiting skipper's kick was saved by Lewes' best performer Baker, Toone buried the ball after it dropped in the mud inside the six-yard box, thereby extinguishing any hopes the hosts might have had of forcing an unlikely draw.

MATCH DETAILS

United Women: Chamberlain; Smith, Hartley, M. Turner, Greenwood; Zelem, Green, Palmer (Devlin 46); Toone, Sigsworth (James 71), Arnot (Galton 46).

Substitutes not used: Ramsey, Roberts, Hanson, Salmon.

Scorers: Green 51, Toone 80.

NEXT HOME MATCH

The Reds are in action at Leigh Sports Village in midweek, hosting Durham Women in the FA Continental Tyres League Cup on Wednesday night. Kick-off is at 19:00 GMT and tickets will be available from www.manutd.com/womenstickets.

UNITED WOMEN 1 DURHAM WOMEN 0

Mollie Green's early strike clinched an important 1-0 win for Manchester United Women over Durham in the Continental Tyres League Cup Group 2 North.

United will go into next week's game away to Everton — now managed by Casey Stoney's former assistant, Willie Kirk — knowing that victory will clinch progress to the next round.

The Reds made the perfect start with just over 30 seconds on the clock. Green, fresh from being named FA Women's Championship Player of the Month for November, latched onto a pass from Jess Sigsworth and coolly fired home her 10th goal of the season.

Lauren James then twice went close to extending the lead, first crashing a curling effort against the inside of a post from the edge of the box before later seeing her powerful drive tipped onto the bar by Durham goalkeeper Megan Borthwick.

James had another attempt from distance which was palmed away by Borthwick before Sigsworth saw a header saved as United took a narrow but deserved one-goal advantage into the break.

The start of the second half was sadly disrupted by a serious-looking injury to Durham's Zoe Ness, who was taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Rachel Lee.

Chances were harder to come by after the interval as the visitors — to date, the only side to take a point from United in the league — began to show their solidity in a closely-fought contest.

Stoney's team were equally resolute at the back and held out for the three points fairly comfortably, with Siobhan Chamberlain rarely forced into action during the course of the evening.

MATCH DETAILS

United Women: Chamberlain; Harris, A. Turner, M. Turner, Greenwood (c); Zelem, Green, James (Devlin 88); Hanson, Galton (Arnot 83), Sigsworth (Toone 70).

Substitutes not used: Ramsey, Hartley, Roberts, Palmer.

Goals: Green (1).

Attendance: 686.

NEXT MATCH

Next up for the Reds is another meeting with Durham, this time away in the league on Sunday 9 December, with kick-off at 12:00 GMT. The aforementioned cup trip to Everton follows on Thursday 13 December (19:00 GMT) before a three-week Christmas break.

United's next home game will be in the New Year, when London Bees are the visitors to Leigh Sports Village on Sunday 6 January 2019 (kick-off 12:00 GMT). Match tickets are on sale at www.manutd.com/womenstickets and priced at £5 (£2.50 for U16s/65+).
