Sosok yang tepat mendampingi Solskjaer
Pengalamannya bersama Sir Alex selama beberapa musim tentunya menjadi salah satu modal utamanya. Semoga Phelan semakin sukses karirnya di United.

'Enough's enough, son. I'm letting you go. I'm going to bring in the kids': Manchester United assistant Mike Phelan reveals how Sir Alex Ferguson brutally told him he was being replaced by Gary Neville 25 years ago

* Mike Phelan played for Manchester United between the years of 1989-1994
* Phelan has recalled the moment Sir Alex Ferguson decided to let him go in 1994
* Gary Neville would end up taking Phelan's place at right-back at Old Trafford

Mike Phelan has revealed how legendary Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson replaced him with upcoming star Gary Neville 25 years ago.

The versatile right-back signed for the Old Trafford outfit from fellow English side Norwich back in 1989 but his career with the club came to a frustrating end five years later.

Ferguson had convinced Phelan to sign on the dotted line at United ahead of Everton but in 1994, the former manager showed no mercy when it came to moving him on for rising star Neville - who was part of the special Class of '92, which also included his brother Phil, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt.

Mike Phelan (left) played under Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United between 1989-1994. Gary Neville, member of the Class of '92, would replace Phelan in the team at Old Trafford

And Phelan, who would eventually become Ferguson's assistant later down the lines, has revealed how he questioned the Scotsman's decision to let him go.

'He came up to me the Friday before the game on Saturday, last game of the season, and pulled me to one side at the training ground,' Phelan told The Athletic.

'He said: "Enough's enough, son. I'm letting you go." "Letting me go where?" "You've done terrific for me, but I'm going to bring in some of the young kids."

'This is when the Class of '92 were around. I was older then, a little bit gobby.

Phelan is back at Old Trafford working as assistant manager to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Phelan enjoyed a very successful time as assistant to legendary United manager Ferguson

'"Who?" "I'm going to play Gary Neville." "Gary Neville? What's he got? Come on, Gaffer. You're gonna play a kid?" "Yeah".'

Phelan would go on to join West Brom, where he would spend 18 months before deciding to hang up his boots.

Phelan would end up serving as Ferguson's assistant between 2008-2013 and he returned to Old Trafford last year to work alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Manchester United underline their commitment to under-fire boss Solskjaer by handing his assistant Mike Phelan a new contract until 2024 - in a MAJOR show of support after turbulent start to the new season

* Manchester United have given Mike Phelan a new contract to stay until 2024
* The 59-year-old has been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's right hand man since 2019
* Phelan's contract extension provides a huge boost for the under-fire Norwegian
* United have made a stuttering start to the campaign, with pressure mounting

Manchester United have handed assistant manager Mike Phelan a new contract — in a move which further underlines their support for boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Sportsmail understands that the Norwegian’s No 2 has had his current deal, which was due to expire next year, extended to 2024.

That duration matches the length of the new contract Solskjaer signed in July and will be viewed as more backing for the manager, who has overseen a stuttering start to United’s campaign despite a big summer outlay.

Manchester United have rewarded Mike Phelan (left ) with a new contract to stay until 2024. The 59-year-old has been Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's right hand man since he took over in 2019

Saturday’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Everton meant the Premier League giants have failed to win four of their last six games in all competitions.

Despite sitting fourth in the table, embarrassing losses at home to Aston Villa in the league, West Ham in the Carabao Cup and at Swiss minnows Young Boys in the Champions League have ramped up the heat on Solskjaer ahead of the international break.

After the stalemate with Everton, Cristiano Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel in a move which drew criticism from former United defender Gary Neville.

‘Actions like that — and Cristiano is smart enough to know this — will bring real pressure on the manager,’ said Neville of the Portuguese, who started the game on the bench.

Phelan, 59, is a much-liked figure within the club and played for them between 1989 and 1994. He was a long-serving assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson but departed following the appointment of David Moyes in 2013. He returned to assist Solskjaer, initially on a temporary basis, in late 2018 after the exit of Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer has been heavily backed since taking charge on a permanent basis in March 2019. This summer, Raphael Varane (£41million) and Jadon Sancho (£73m) arrived before Ronaldo, with a widely held view that the Norwegian needs to deliver some form of return on the substantial investment.

Meanwhile, former United wonderkid Angel Gomes has revealed he left the club over a lack of game time ahead of his England Under 21 debut.

Phelan's (left) contract extension gives Solskjaer a major vote of confidence amid a poor run

Lille snapped up Gomes on a free transfer last year after the attacking midfielder, who became the youngest United debutant since Duncan Edwards in May 2017, rejected a new contract.

The 21-year-old has since shone in the Champions League for the French champions and is set for a first appearance for Lee Carsley’s Young Lions in Slovenia on Thursday.

‘Everyone always says I left for money which, for me, makes no sense,’ Gomes (below) said. ‘Why would anyone leave Man United, the biggest club in the world, with a lot of money, to go to the French league to play for Lille?

‘It was more to do with the pathway and the opportunity that Lille were bringing.

‘It was just a decision I chose to make and nothing to do with personal issues at the club or anything. It was the biggest sacrifice I’ve ever made.’

Gomes, heralded as one of the best prospects to come out of United’s academy, leaned on godfather and former United winger Nani for counsel in the months before departing the club.

‘There was a lot of pressure and a lot of negativity which came from that,’ he added. ‘I spoke to him (Nani) about it. His influence has been massive for me.

‘He was someone I grew up idolising, not just on the pitch but off the pitch as well. With me he was amazing, humble and normal.

‘If anything, he’s shown me more off the pitch than on the pitch. On the pitch I could watch videos and watch him live, but off the pitch he was surreal.’

Manchester United 'have tasked Mike Phelan with unifying the dressing room' at Old Trafford with as many as SEVENTEEN first-team players currently unhappy at the club

* Manchester United lost for the first time under Ralf Rangnick against Wolves
* The interim boss has failed so far to drastically improve fortunes on the pitch
* It is reported that many stars inside the Old Trafford dressing room are unhappy

Mike Phelan has been handed in the unenviable task of unifying the Manchester United dressing room.

United lost for the first time under interim head coach Ralf Rangnick against Wolves on Monday, and cracks are beginning to appear within the squad.

Defender Luke Shaw gave an honest assessment after the game, insisting that the squad was not 'together' after the defeat.

And Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday evening that as many as seventeen first-team stars at Old Trafford are unhappy at the club.

All this has led to the need for United to find immediate solutions, and according to reports they have found one in the form of Phelan.

According to the Mirror, Phelan has been asked by Rangnick himself to speak to players as a whole and indiviudally in a bid to bring stars back onto the same page.

Phelan is a respected and well-established figure at the club, having acted as a No 2 for Sir Alex Ferguson, as well as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Rangnick has become aware of the situation following a series of meeting with players to discuss their futures.

Anthony Martial will leave on loan this month if Sevilla improve their opening loan offer, and is set to move permanently in the summer.

Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard have shown no inclination to renew their contracts which are due to run out at the end of June, enabling both to leave on free transfers and deal United a huge financial blow.

Mike Phelan will NOT be part of Erik ten Hag's coaching team as the new Manchester United boss shuffles the pack and club weigh-up another role for the highly-respected 59-year-old

* Mike Phelan and current backroom staff will be departing Manchester United
* Erik ten Hag is bringing in his own group to help his attempt to turn club around
* Phelan was a player and the assistant manager under Sir Alex Ferguson
* He then came back to work under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as his No 2
* Phelan will not be in dugout with Ten Hag, although he could have role at club

Mike Phelan and Ralf Rangnick’s backroom staff will leave the Manchester United coaching team as part of a reshuffle following Erik ten Hag’s appointment.

Phelan was a player and assistant manager under Sir Alex Ferguson before returning to the club in 2019 as No 2 to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The 59-year-old is hugely respected at Old Trafford and may continue his association with United in some capacity depending on the outcome of discussions, but he will not be in the dugout alongside new boss Ten Hag.

The three men brought in by interim manager Rangnick – first-team coaches Chris Armas and Ewan Sharp and psychologist Sascha Lense – will leave Old Trafford, but goalkeeper coach Richard Hartis and set-piece specialist Eric Ramsay are staying on.

The club declined to comment on Tuesday and said discussions with staff members over their future roles are ongoing.

United confirmed on Monday that Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren will be Ten Hag’s assistants, and it’s understood that a new first-team coach is also set to join the staff.

Ralf Rangnick's backroom staff, including Mike Phelan (right), will no longer be in the coaching team under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford next season. Phelan is a highly respected member of the club and they could find another role for him

Ten Hag has promised to break Manchester City and Liverpool’s grip on English football, but admits it will take time and that a top-four place is the first goal.

‘I said this is the project, to bring Man United back on top, but also we have to accept the current situation we are in,’ he said in a club interview.

‘First of all, Man United belong in the Champions League, so that will be the first target.’

Ex-Man United coach Mike Phelan denies there was any pressure to pick Cristiano Ronaldo last season, but admits there will always be 'outside influences' calling for him to play... after the striker reacted angrily to being overlooked against Tottenham

* Cristiano Ronaldo was an unused substitute against Tottenham on Wednesday
* He reacted angrily and stormed down the tunnel before the final whistle
* Ten Hag has not been afraid to consistently leave Ronaldo out this season
* This was not the case last term, but Mike Phelan has denied there was pressure to pick Ronaldo
* He has admitted 'outside influences' will always want Ronaldo to play, though

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has denied the suggestion that there was ever any pressure put on the coaching staff to pick Cristiano Ronaldo last season.

Phelan worked under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick in 2021-22 before departing in the summer, while Ronaldo returned to the club last August.

Despite turning 37 during the season, Ronaldo still started 27 league matches last term, but it has been a different story this time around with the Portuguese starting just two of United's opening 10 top flight games under Erik Ten Hag.

Ten Hag has not been afraid to leave Ronaldo out, but Solskjaer and Rangnick were reluctant to do so. However, Phelan has insisted that neither manager felt they were forced to select Ronaldo in their team.

After being asked about whether there was pressure applied to pick Ronaldo, Phelan told Malaysian television station Astro SuperSport: 'No. No, not really, not to the point that it [the suggestion] was made.

Cristiano Ronaldo stormed down the tunnel before the final whistle on Wednesday. Erik Ten Hag has regularly left Ronaldo out of his starting line-up this season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer consistently picked Ronaldo last term, but Mike Phelan has denied there was ever any pressure to play Ronaldo

'When I talk about the noise and the outside influences, then yes. There is a lot of talk about [him]. If Cristiano plays and he scores, Manchester United win. If he doesn’t play and we lose, then Cristiano should have played. That will always be there and you can’t avoid that.

'But, from our point of view, every manager and every coach talks only about winning the game of football. And how you are going to do that. That is the hardest thing. So you pick the best team and the best players to help you try to do that.'

Phelan's comments come after Ronaldo reacted angrily to being an unused substitute for United's 2-0 win against Tottenham on Wednesday.

The striker stormed down the tunnel before the final whistle at Old Trafford after being overlooked by Ten Hag.

This came just three days after he was visibly frustrated at being substituted during Sunday's goalless draw with Newcastle.

Ronaldo was also an unused substitute against Manchester City earlier this month, meaning he has failed to play a single minute in two league games already this season.

This did not happen at all last season when he was named in the matchday squad, as he only missed league matches due to injury or personal reasons.
